Yogas – Part III

Part three for the Yoga Primer-

XXI) Yogada & Maha Yogada – These are based on Jamini principles. Please refer to rashi drishti concept articles if you are not aware of how Rashi drishtis work (example a planet in a dual sign will aspect all the other dual signs via the Rashi aspect). Also remember that among special Lagnas, HL = Hora Lagna (indicates wealth) and GL = Ghati Lagna indicates power and authority.

Now if a planet aspects both the Lagna and the HL, then its a Yogada Yoga giving Wealth and prosperity
If the planet aspects both the Lagna and the GL, then the forming Yogada yoga gives Power & authority

Likewise if a planet aspects all 3 – Lagna, HL and GL then a Maha Yogada yoga is formed which gives power, wealth and authority to the native
These yogas get activated during the dasas of the planet which is involved in forming the Yogada or Maha Yogada yogas

XXII) Naabhasa Yogas – These Yogas are very broad/ generic in nature. I do not pay much heed to them. These are formed when the 7 planets (except Rahu/ Ketu) are placed in x number of signs. x can range from 1 to 7. Depending on ‘x’ a specific yoga is formed which can be positive or negative. Example when x =1, Gola yoga is formed which is negative. When x = 4, Kedaara yoga is formed which is positive. It is important to know that Naabhasa yogas do exist, although I do not give them much importance as they are very broad Yogas and will not act independently. Hence I do not discuss these in detail here

XXIII) Kaal- Sarp Yoga– When all the 7 planets excluding the nodes are situated on one side of the Rahu- Ketu axis, Kaal Sarp yoga is formed. Please refer to the article on Kaal-Sarp Yoga in the advanced Topics section which details this yoga in depth. Generally, this is deemed as a negative formation

XIV) Amala Yoga – When only natural (not functional) benefics occupy the 10th house from the Lagna or Moon, this yoga is formed. It makes the person virtuous in his actions in day to day life for which he will earn a good reputation in society. Example Capricorn Lagna and only Venus sits in the 10th house of Libra sign, Amala Yoga is formed, in this case a strong one as Venus is in Mooltrikona sign and if non combust and direct in motion, will be strongly placed

XV) Kalpdruma/ Parijata – This is a highly strong and potent Yoga which generally elevates the entire horoscope and hence the potency of other positive Yogas in the horoscope to a large extent. This Yoga is based on the dipositor principle. As mentioned before, a planet gains strength when its sign and/ or Navamsa depositor is in high dignity (example own house or exalted).

Parijata Yoga is formed when the Lagna lord, its depositor and the Rashi and Navamsa depositors of the depositor of Lagna lord are all situated in a Kendra (1,4,7,10) or Kona (1,5,9) and are in high dignity – i.e. exalted or own house and not combust (bright).

This Yoga increases the vitality of the entire horoscope and the other positive yogas in the horoscope will manifest more intensely due to this Yoga being present in a horoscope

XVI) Shubha Yoga – A Kartaari yoga as has been discussed before. This is positive. It forms when the 12th house and 2nd house deposit generically benefic planets (Jupiter, venus, mercury and Moon). This gives strength to the Lagna (as it is helmed between 2 benefics) and if the lagna also has a benefic, this is even stronger

XVII) Ashubha Yoga – A Paap Kartaari yoga (negative) where the 12th and 2nd house deposit generically malefic planets (Saturn, rahu, ketu, mars, Sun). Since Lagna is now helmed between malefics, the power and auspiciousness of the 1st house is greatly reduced

XVIII) Pravrajya Yoga – When 4 or more planets are situated in the same sign, especially if in a Kendra or Kona house, this Yoga forms. The more the number of planets, the stronger the Yoga. This indicates too much energy in one aspect/ area of life and hence a mismatch of energies in a particular aspect of life for the individual. Such people will come across as having intense personalities and over a long period of time, they tend to become detached towards the materialistic pursuits of life. Keep in mind that detachment does not equate to sainthood always. Even a person going through the daily grind can have a tendency to be detached to his daily work. This yoga is especially pronounced if it occurs in the 10th bhaav as 10th bhaav represents our career/ job/ social status and Karma (actions)

XXIX) Tapaswi Yoga – Tapaswi means a Saint. When Saturn, Ketu and Venus are either conjunct (same sign) or in exact trines to each other (same nakshatra) then this Yoga occurs. Saturn is a detaching planet by nature. Ketu represents Moksha or renunciation and detachment from all materialistic pursuits of life. Venus on the other hand represents the pleasures and attachments of life including romance, marriage, wine/ dine, luxuries, vehicles, etc. When Venus is conjunct or affected by the austere planets Saturn and Ketu, the person will not be attached to materialistic pursuits in life. They will either not have too much materialistic possessions, or even if they do, they will not be attached to money/ materialism too much. They generally tend to like dedicated, altruistic and austere pursuits in life

XXX) Vasumati Yoga – This is a positive and wealth giving yoga. Upaachya bhaavs are – 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. These bhaavs improve with age and time as life progresses. When a lot of generic benefics  (Jupiter, venus, mercury and Moon) are placed in Upaachya bhaavs, this Yoga occurs. Thus if all 4 of the generic benefics are placed strongly in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th bhaav of a horoscope, a potent Vasumati Yoga is formed which gives wealth and status to the native

So we have covered 30 kinds of important Yogas (both good and bad). As I mentioned before, there are thousands of permutations and combination possible of the planets and hence as many Yogas in theory. This list of 30, is hence, far from comprehensive. The reader is advised to read 300 important combinations by Dr. B.V.Raman for an indepth dive into Yoga formation.

That said, the last 3 articles serve to enlighten the reader with some very important Yogas which the reader should familiarize themselves with for a good reading of a horoscope in addition to the other chapter in this “Lessons” series.

    Hello VS:
Can you add a few words on Parivartan Yoga? With Saturn in Pisces and Jupiter in Capricorn, is this a parivartan? If true, what happens to the debilitation of Jupiter? Does it get nullified as a few blogs suggest? Thanks.

    • VS says:

      Hi

I will try to add more on an exchange (especially rasi exchange) as exchanges are relevant at a nakshatra level also

in the situation you mention, the debilitation of jupiter does NOT get canceled automatically unless jupiter is in a kendra from the lagna and preferably from the moon also. also if mars is present in capricorn with jupiter, its debilitation will get canceled as well. however when an exchange happens, the planets work in tandem and take on each others characteristics as well. Strongest exchanges are ones where the 2 planets are opposite to each other…example mars in libra and venus in aries…in such case they are not just exchanged but also in mutual aspect which makes this yoga very strong

  2. Sundar says:

Hello VS: Given Oct 13, 1997, 5:18 PM, Tiruchirapalli (Tiruchy), why does Jupiter get 15 on Vimsopaka (highest) despite the debilitation? Thanks.

    • VS says:

      Hi Sundar,

I dont do specific questions or horoscopes. Idea of this platform is to spread the word and feed the curious student. Thats all.

      Thanks

  3. Astro Learner says:

Hello, Can Parivartan yoga take place between three planets?
    Scorpio Lagna,
Saturn in 1st house, Mars in 2nd house, Jupiter in 4th house.

  4. Mayur Kher says:

I know a Stree Jataka who has Bhadra Yoga which is one of the Panch Mahapurush Yoga, but she is dragging feet as far as married life & employment is concerned, she worked in all mediocre establishments & when she started freelancing her money was duped by the people who gave her work, her marriage is on brink of divorce inspite her being more than 100% committed towards it & very sincere to make it work, her husband has been doing emotion black mailing from the day one since they got married for last 8 years inspite having 6 years old son who is very affable, her husband is having extra marital affair but wants best of both worlds, she is also having Kaal- Sarp Yoga in Rahu being in 8th with Venus in Cancer, but Venus even being in same house is coming between Ketu & Rahu, as Ketu in 2nd being 24 degrees so Rahu in 8th & Venus is on 17 degrees, Bhadra Yoga is formed in 10th House with conjunction of Mercury with Saturn and Sun, but Mercury is 17 degree apart from Sun and 13 degrees apart from Saturn, Sun & Saturn are in Anshatmak Yuti in 4 degree.

Kindly excuse me for writing such a lengthy post, also I am not asking for any assessment of the Horoscope of Jatak, but I have observed that even yogas are hyped too much, they don’t really take you anywhere if other aspects are not supported in horoscope, unless they are formed by powerful planets like Sun, Mars, Jupiter.

    • VS says:

      Hi Mayur-

A lot of Good and bad yogas exist for a lot of jataks. Does not mean that they all manifest in the way we expect them to. A few things to keep in mind-

      1. Desh, Kaal & Paristithi – Meaning any reading is to be given in the context of a person’s background, situation and cultural/ religious background etc. a person born with an average horoscope in a rich family is going to have a different life than a person born with a very strong horo but to a beggar with no food to eat due to the opportunity set they get in life. Likewise a person born in an advanced country will be different than a person born in a nation torn with war and having extreme poverty

      2. Yogas have to be looked very closely in terms of the strengths of planets causing them. IN any horo there are good and bad planets. The power of good even if good, if is equal to or less than the power of the evil/ functionally malefic planets, then the positive will not manifest properly. many a times I see horoscopes with 6 planets either exalted or own house. Now in such cases the 6,8, 12 and badhak lords might be very strong too in addition to the good houses. results overall might be average despite an exceptionally looking good horoscope

      3. The dignity of yoga causing planets is vital and this can only be learnt with a lot of time and experience. avastha, shadbal, divisional placements, avayogas, rashi or bhaav sandhis, etcetc…lots of things have to be looked at and the net result is a sum of all

      4. finally a person has to make the right effort at the opportune time and right dasa and transits have to click for events to precipitate, which is more complex than just a yoga existing in a horoscope

  5. Sundar says:

    VS,
Re: Kalpdruma/ Parijata, is it somewhat of a rare yoga?
I am seeing Indira Gandhi’s chart and Saturn is in Cancer Asc, Moon in Capri in D-1, and Moon in capri (d-9) involved in this yoga. As you have mentioned, it seems to have boosted a few other yogas that I might see in 5 out of 10 charts..

    • VS says:

kalpdruma is a great yoga to have and based on the dipositor concept. When the depositor of lagna is strong and well placed in D1 and navamsa its strengthens the lagna which is the primary bhaav in any chart. if lagnesh and lagna are weak, all other yogas will fail to fructify, atleast not self made (one could still be born into a rich family and do nothing worthwile in their life or inherit money/ power)

Kalpdruma itself is a great yoga, but more importantly it makes all other good yogas in the chart very potent and hence this is very desirable to have. In Indira Gandhi’s horoscope, there are 3 exchanges. exchanges also work on the depositor principle. lets say leo ascendant which Indira gandhi has and jupiter in 10th and venus in 5th exchange rashis. jupiter in taurus (enemy sign) in 10th isnt by itself great at all. but here it will also give effects of venus as its depositor. now venus sits in 5th and venus by itself is a malefic for leo lagna but its depositor sits in 10th. so jupiter will give results based out of 5th and 5th will give based out of 10th or in other words 5th and 10th get strongly connected and a potent raj yoga is formed even when both planets are placed either nuutral territory and both are placed 6ht-8th to each other which is very negative in general)

a planet that is exalted but has its depositor very weak in D1 is like a diamond laying in piles of garbage.

  6. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
Can a FM and/or a natural malefic become a Maha yogada? example Pisces asc, HL in 7th, GL in Capricorn, Saturn in lagna.

    Thanks.

  7. Arun says:

    Good day Sir,
I would like to ask you a question regarding Amala Yoga – in this case Makara rasi and its tenth house is Libra which has Venus and Saturn. As per Amala Yoga only benefice should be present, but here Saturn exalted and venus is in his own house; Is this the case of partial amala yoga or no amala yoga ? Further the Shadbala of venus is 389.31 – in rupas 6.49 and Saturn 355.11 – in rupas 5.92. Please give your opinion. Thank you,

    • VS says:

Amala yoga is not the relevant yoga here as much as Malavya and Sasa mahapurush yogas. THis is a brilliant raj yoga combination for Capricorn ascendant and as long as the planets are not combust, will raise the person to great heights in career/ public life

  8. narasimha says:

    HI sir
I am grateful to you for the time, effort and patience you have for answering so many queries for the benefit of others
    you have mentioned
Parijata Yoga is formed when the Lagna lord, its depositor and the Rashi and Navamsa depositors of the depositor of Lagna lord are all situated in a Kendra (1,4,7,10) or Kona (1,5,9) and are in high dignity – i.e. exalted or own house and not combust (bright).
in the above sentence last you have mentioned the combust means if this yoga forms btw sun and saturn conjuction will not work iam i right?

    • VS says:

hi, combust just means any planet that is within 12 degrees of the sun, especially within 8 degrees
in that situation, even an otherwise strong dignity planet will become weak

      • Rahul says:

        Hi vivek sir
Can this parijat yog be formed with only one planet?does this yog get activated only during mahadasha of yog forming planets?

        • VS says:

well if the lagna lord in own sign and navamsa then yes example virgo ascendant and mercury in last navamsa of virgo

          • Rahul says:

            Vivej sir
In this case lagna lord becomes extremely stronger so it will give prevent impact of bad yogas in the chart

          • VS says:

yes to some extent. Also it means whatever yogas exist in the chart will flourish more easily and strongly (both good and bad)

      • narasimha says:

actually they have conjunct-ed with 1 degree only.
sun as lagna lord is at 1 sg 36′ and saturn is 0 sg 7′
so in the above case the yoga will get nullified??

        • VS says:

saturn in this case is deep combust and the houses saturn rules will suffer due to its very close proximity to its bitter enemy sun

          • narasimha says:

            ya sir you are right
and i have read some where that if any malefic planet is conjuncted with lagna lord who is strong then it will reduce negative results of malefic planet upto some extent is it right??

          • VS says:

typically if a strong lord of 1 or 5 or 9 sits with any other planet, the other planet will gain power in this situation

  9. Narayan says:

    Dear VS,

Can you please share your thoughts on KP & IP.

For Sun MD KP is 50% and IP is 7%. When you look at other planets such as Jupiter for whom KP is 8% and IP is 49%; saturn KP is 24% and IP 31%; mercury kp is 28% and IP is 33%.

In such scenario can the AD planets support in reducing the malefic Sun effects. Here Sun is in libra and venus is not combust.

    Thanks and regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

KP & IP dont show the strength of the planet. Mostly its degree of happiness (closeness to its exaltation point) as well as degree of separation from sun(farther the brighter)

A planet with high IP can still have a low shadbal and vice versa

Usually with higher IP, the planet gives results smoothly and with less obstacles

  10. Ajith says:

    Hi Vivekji

Could you please tell us about budha-aditya yoga.

    • VS says:

      Hi Ajith

Buddha aditya yoga just means the combination of budha and aditya (sun). a very frequent yoga as mercury is never more than 27 degrees from the sun
sun powers the natural part of the planet it comes close to…making it shine…in this case gives intelligence, communication ability etc. however if mercury is within 5 to 6 degrees from the sun, the houses that mercury rules will suffer due to combustion

on the other hand the actual functional effects will vary as per the lagna and hence the house ownerships of sun and mercury as well as which bhaav the conjunction is actually taking place

  11. Robert says:

What if there is yogada to HL but planet giving yogada is in 6th in great enemy sign. What will happen then? Can you give some clarification when yogada really provides some good wealth? Thanks

    • VS says:

yogada/ maha yogada is a jamini concept and is more subtle than simple yogas in parasari astrology. if a horoscope has no strong dhan yogas then no amount of yogada or not will change that in my experience and thus it has to be a top down analysis of a chart

  12. T. Uthayathasan says:

    Hi Vs,
For the yogas which chart we have to consider. Bava Chart or Rasi Chart.
    specially yogada/ maha yogada.
    Thanks

    • VS says:

for yogas look at the degrees between planets. more than 18 even in same rashi will give no conjunction effects. on the other hand different rashis but just 2 degrees apart is a strong conjunciton

  13. T. Uthayathasan says:

    Hi VS
    Thanks for the reply.
If a planet could spread its wave/light up to 15 degree, why it cant spread the light to the next sign.
ie, if Jupiter in 20 degree Leo, why it can’t spread his waves to Virgo up to 5 degree of Virgo.
When we consider the aspects the wave/light is going from one sing to other sign.
ie, if moon in Sagittarius its light is going to Gemini. So the wave can penetrate from one sign to another sign.
The light can go from one sign to another sign. So, Will we need to consider the signs in conjunctions?

    • VS says:

yes whatever you wish to call it – wave or light etc, any planet will impact 10 to 15 degrees radius around it. sign is irrelevant. stronger planets and Sun can impact even upto 20 degrees

  14. Varun says:

    Good Day Sir,

Shall be grateful if you could clarify following :

For deciding yoga occurrence which chart should we use Rasi Chart (D1) or Chalit Chart.

    Thank you.

      • Varun says:

        Good day Sir,

        With ref above :

        1. I am Leo asc and my 12th lord moon in 6th in my D1 Chart and Jupiter in 11th (29 deg 55 in Gemini and happens to be AK).

        2. In Chalit Jupiter is moving into 12th house.

Jhora is indicating there is viparita raja yoga as per d1 chart.
In view of chalit what are the potential for Viparita Raja Yoga.

        Thank you,
        Varun

        • VS says:

i dont do chart readings here and this is a specific chart query

however it is likely that the vipreet raj yoga here is not due to jupiter. it is infact due to the 12th lord in 6th (moon). JHora yogas are not based on chalit, rather the rasi chart or for that matter any software that you might utilize

  15. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
Can u say something about DANDA YOGA in a chart.there are 4types of danda yoga .mr b v raman has written that natives with danda yoga wont get pleasure of wife and children.have you seen this yoga woking as you have seen many charts

    • VS says:

each chart has to be studied carefully with many details. In any case Danda yoga in particular can be good if all generic benefics are involved and generally bad if all generic malefics are involved

  16. Abhishek says:

    Hello Vivek,
The knowledge you have provided here is very insightful. Short background – Our origins seem to have some synergies. I came to the US about a decade ago and served a few Wall St banks in the risk management area. I developed a deep inclination towards vedic astrology and your website has immensely helped set the right foundations, upon which I’m hoping to build further (destiny permitting!)

That being said, there is one generic question regarding 3 graha conjunction which I’m trying to interpret – Sun, Moon and Rahu (or Ketu). My thought process is as below but wanted to check if its making directional sense to you:
    1. Interpreting two Grahas at a time – Sun, Rahu or Moon, Rahu depending on who Rahu is approaching will cause grahan on Sun / Moon so it could be unfavorable for the karakatwa of the Graha as well as the Bhaav
    2. In this conjunction, in case the moon is hemmed between malefics Rahu and Sun will be extremely bad for moon (sort of paap kartari for moon)
    3. However, what if this conjunction falls in a dusthana (i.e. 8th house). Will make the dusthana Bhaav weaker so overall could it be good (some sort of vipreet?)

Your thoughts will be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    • VS says:

you have to consider the overall functional nature of sun and moon in the scenario and ofcourse all other aspects and shad bals etc.
that said usually rahu, sun and moon together will rarely be good. Even if some functionally good results, there is likely to be instability in the individual’s thougths/ emotions and character. such people are comuplsive liars and it is hard to trust them at any stage. if moon is really weak then severe mental diseases and an antisocial persoanilty can occur as well as self harming or harming others

on the other hand ketu with sun and moon is less malefic and if there is a benefic aspect, example a strong jupiter, then this can indicate a highly evolved or spiritual soul with strong powers of concentration or even memory. Such people can have strong purva janam karmas and have a strong intuition and patience in this life

the only generic statement to be made is that sun is worse with Rahu and moon is worse with Ketu as stand alone. however in practice, I have seen that with Rahu, neither luminary gives good results and can always lead to long term mental or health issues and ups and downs in life and image of the person

finally ketu with any planet will tend to increase the effect of that planet and rashi lord many times. if ketu is conjunct or trinal to a very strong (bright and exalted moon) as an example, it can show very potent intelligence, intuition and memory powers. I have seen this as a matter of fact in the charts of dozens if not hundreds of geniuses, that ketu is trinal or conjunct to moon and or mercury (planets indicating intelligence and emotion) such individuals have the ability to see into future and perform what appears to be extra sensory perception in life at times. ketu represents radiation and x-rays. such individuals have the knack to ‘see through’ the people they converse with just by intuition they know the good from the bad very quickly, they can also sense events that are about to happen as a ‘feeling’.

i have seen some world famous mathematicians who could make extreme mental calculations to have ketu trinal or conjunct moon and/ or mercury

      • Abhishek Pande says:

Thank you, Vivek. You are doing a phenomenal job spreading this beautiful knowledge and art, which is too deep to read from “authentic” books and too complex to decipher from classics. I am aware there is no short cut to learning this, but your pages serve as great accelerators.

Infact, there is tremendous amount of knowledge to be gained from the comments sections as well (I’m seeing how other students like Sundar have gained and matured over the years learning from you!). Appreciate your inputs, and allow me to come back with more questions (As you said in other comments, I’ll be mindful of not asking specific charts / scenarios as I try to analyze practice charts and build myself).

        Thanks!

      • Charlie says:

Alan Turing has ketu and moon tightly conjuncted in the 5th house in virgo and the depositor mercury is also in gemini.

        • VS says:

ketu internalizes and magnifies any planet it sits with. when ketu is conjunct or trinal to a strong moon/ mercury, it makes for the best analytical minds in the world

          • Charlie says:

Is it possible that a planet could be considered strong but with a lower shad bala (say 80%)?

For example, cancer lagna native has moon in Taurus tightly conjunct with Venus in the 11th house, but sun is in gemini(which means sun is not apart from moon more than 72 degree) , and moon and Venus both are tightly aspected by the Saturn in scorpio.

the reason I asked this question is because the technical term “strong” is really difficult to understand, really confusing actually.

            as the example I said, in the terms of shad bala, moon is really weak;

but form the dispositer point of view, I think moon is not weak at all (or am I wrong?)

            but, when considering aspect, moon is also quite weak (due to the connection with both its enemy Saturn and Venus);

            however the moon is in its exalted sign(not in the deep exaltation degree);

and the native born before the new moon which means moon is completely dark which definitely suggests a very weak moon.

Could you please kindly show some light on this, thx.

how weak is this moon? when a planet is weak, what is really means in a general point of view?

          • VS says:

That is why I have always maintained that understanding the mathematics of grah and bhaav bal is vital for any student of astrology. However, once done, it has to be applied in a hollistic manner and not blindly as a mathematical model
nothing in Jyotish works black and white and there are always exceptions, additional factors to be considered etc. Shad bal for example does not measure many measures of bal still – like vimsopaka bal, Ishtha phal etc. there are also some underlying assumption in the 6 components of shad bal which might need to be tweaked, but this gets very technical and no way for me to elaborate all of them

a moon that is 120 degrees or more away from sun is just one of the ways it has strength. this will affect its Ishtha Phal more than its shad bal. biggest component of shad bal is the saptavargya bal or the placement of the planet in the divisionals, etc.all things equal (big assumption) the moon in the scenario you have mentioned will remain very strong. It will have low dig bal (directional strength) which is also not a component of shad bal. moon’s dig bal is stronger, the closer it is to the center of 4th bhaav

  17. Charlie says:

How abt Venus in Taurus in the 1st house, but sun occupy the 12th house and Rahu occupy the 2nd house? Does this cancel the Panch Mahapurush Yoga out? (Venus is quite strong in shadbala, but so does the Sun and Saturn)

  18. Kartikeya Das says:

    Dear Vivek ji,

Is the the planetary position to see the confidion of Vasumati Yoga seen from Rashi chart or Bhaav Chait chart ?

What happens if most of the natural benefics are in Upachaya in rashi chart conferring the Vasumati Yoga in theory but in the Bhaav chalit those planets are no longer in the upachaya houses ?

    • VS says:

a yoga that is active in both rasi and bhaav chart is stronger than one that exists only in a bhaav chart or only in a rashi chart. that said, the actual placement of the planet is the bhaav placement and not the rashi
