Yogas – Part I

Another immensely crucial topic which needs to be addressed before doing some case studies.

There is no possible way to ‘short cut’ through this topic, which is immensely wide as well as deep. There is, however, a way to jump start the process for a learner, who can then graduate to advanced books on the same including 300 Important Combinations by Dr. B.V. Raman, which is a book i recommend for this topic.

Yoga, as mentioned earlier, is a combination of 2 or more planets which can have a positive or negative effect as per the functional and generic nature of the planets involved. This is the essence of Vedic astrology and a topic which takes years to master, but that said, some basics can be grasped quickly. Most detailed softwares will spit out the various combinations present in a horoscope. However, keep in mind – a mere presence of a Yoga does not imply actual manifestation of its positive or negative results, as might be, to a full extent. Other factors including strength and dignity of planets involved in the Yoga, the closeness in terms of longitudes the planets are separated from each other as well as the strength/ dignity of the owners of the rashi, nakshatra depositors of the involved planets will dictate the intensity of a Yoga.

Another vital parameter to be considered is the closeness from the Bhaav Madhya as discussed before. The closer the combination occurs to the middle of a bhaav, the stronger the effects in that particular bhaav and vice-versa

I hereby give some important Positive Yogas below in a very generic fashion for a beginner and hence focus on the concept behind the Yoga and not perhaps the specific Yoga or its nomenclature, which will confuse learners in the field.

I) Raj Yogas – A wide class of Yogas which are positive by definition and aid in the financial and mental well being of the individual in whose horoscope they form. They are are of many kinds.
a) However get into a habit of looking at the owners of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses. These form the Bhagya Trikona or the Fortune triangle. The owners of the houses will always be friendly to each other and 2 or all 3 of them are connected via conjunction or mutual aspect, they form a Raj Yoga or combination of good luck/ fortune. If this occurs in the 1st, 5th or 9th house itself, it is even better. It is also great to form in a Kendra house -1st, 4th, 7th or 10th

b) Likewise a combination of a lord of 1/5/9 with a Kendra lord or 1/4/7/10 is also a Raj Yoga as long as the planets involved are functional benefics for the ascendant. Keep in mind 1/5/9 are always functionally benefic. However the lords of 4/7/10 can be positive, neutral or even negative in some cases. Refer to the functional nature of planets article earlier.

II) Panch Mahapurush Yogas – or 5 great men (literal translation) These Yogas are formed when one of the 5 non luminary planets – Mars, Saturn, Venus, Jupiter or Mercury are in their own sign or exalted sign while being in a Kendra house (1/4/7/10 bhaav). This is a very good Yoga to have and the functional as well as generic nature of the planet becomes enhanced to a large extent. Example when Venus is in Libra in 10th house for Capricorn, it forms ‘Malavya’ Yoga which will enhance the functional nature of Venus (rulership of 5th and 10th bhaav in this case) as well as give wealth/ luxuries (general significations of venus) to the individual

III) Vipreet RajYogas – These are formed when 2 negative lords combine. Namely lords of 6th, 8th or 12th houses (which are considered functionally negative) combine in any bhaav. This Yoga is more powerful if it occurs in a dusthana house itself – i.e. 6th or 8th or 12th bhaav and does NOT involve lords of good places especially of 1,2,5 or 9th house. This combination typically portrays a -ve with -ve turning into very positive effect. When correctly formed, such a yoga can give massive riches and a steep rise in a person’s career/ job/ social status.

IV) Parivartana Yogas – Parivartana means exchange. When two planets are placed in the other’s sign respectively, they are swapped and will ‘work with each other’ or in tandem. They exchange each other’s properties and to some extent, the planets behave functionally as if they are sitting in their own signs respectively.

Example for Leo rising, Mars is in Leo while Sun is in scorpio. This forms an exchange of the 1st and 5th lords

Again, like in Raj Yogas, remember that an exchange between 1 trikona lords is extremely auspicious. Meaning if 1/5/9 exchange with each other, a strong Raj Yoga results. Likewise a swap of a Kendra (1/4/7/10) ruler with a Trikona (1/5/9) ruler or a Kendra lord with another Kendra lord are very positive as well.

However the exchange of a Kendra or Kona lord with a dusthana lord (6/8/12) is a negative Yoga and causes miseries. Example for Aries rising, Mars is in Virgo (6th bhaav) and Mercury is in Aries so a Trikona (1st) lord exchanges with a dusthana lord (6th)

V) Neecha Bhang RajYoga – Another category of potent Yoga is Neecha Bhanga Raj Yoga is Neecha Bhang Yoga (NBY). This occurs if a debilitated planet sits in a kendra bhaav (1/4/7/10) and its depositor is either sitting in conjunction with the planet or in a Kendra from it. It also occurs if the depositor is in exaltation as well as if an exalted planet sits in the same sign as the debilitated planet while the debilitated planet sits in a Kendra bhaav (1/4/7/10)

Typically this is a potent strong Yoga and will give strong benefits related to the rulership of houses of the planet involved, but only after some initial setbacks/ failures or delays.

Example is Capricorn rising with Mars in 7th house in Cancer conjunct with Moon in cancer. In this case Mars gets NBY and will become a strong benefic as long as its strong in shadbal and has good aspects on it. Such a Mars will give initial pressures in its dasas but ultimately cause great strides in the life of the individual, especially related to the houses in rules – in this example 4th as well as 11th

VI) Mridanga – When exalted planets or planets in their own sign sit in a Trikona or Kendra Bhaav, they cause great positive results related to the houses they rule and also their generic significations. Typically such planets elevate the entire life/ status of an individual in their dasas if they are in good dignity as per the many scores of quantifying dignity of a planet as discussed in other articles

VII) Dhan Yogas – When the rulers of 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th bhaavs combine with good dignity, they cause a Yoga which gives wealth. If the combination occurs in 2/5/9/11 or any Kendra house (1/4/7/10) then this Yoga is stronger (as opposed to occuring in 3,6,8,12 bhaavs). The logic is that the 2/5/9/11 bhaavs rule over wealth in one way or the other and hence when 2 or more such lords combine, a combination for wealth creation is made.

Typically good to have the ascendant lord also in this mix for this Yoga to be stronger.

Another strong Dhan Yoga occurs when the 5th lord is in 5th and 11th lord in 11th, hence aspecting each other fully in great dignity. Even when 5-11 lords exchange, the same occurs as long as the planets are in good dignity.

VIII) Laxmi Yoga – When the lord of 9th house is exalted in a Kendra house or is sitting in its own house in great dignity, Laxmi Yoga results which blesses the native with great fortune, wealth and intelligence as these are the significations of the 9th house of destiny/ fortune and crystallized intelligence/ higher education

IX) Jamini Yogas – These are of many types. However a good practice is to look at the placement and dignity of Atmakaraka (AK), Amatyakaraka (AmK). When these 2 lords combine, especially in a Trikona or Kendra house, a RajYoga results

The above are some of the very important positive combinations. Hundreds of other kinds exist and are important to know. However the above are absolutely crucial to know well for any astrologer. In part II of this article, I will cover some more positive as well as negative yogas to watch out for. Beyond that, the beginner is set with all necessary tools to start looking at horoscopes and we will look at some case studies of well known figures.

  1. Shailesh Patel says:

Respected sir, i want to know result of exchange of house (Sthan parivartan) or two planets are in each others exalted houses, (this yog is in my niece’s horoscope- having Makar-Capricorn Ascendant having Saturn/Sani & Mars/Mangal in tenth house in Tula /Libra rashi. so saturn is in mars’s exalted rashi & Mars is in saturn’s exalted rashi
Date of birth 13-Oct-1991, Birth time 14:08, Birth Place- Bhuj (Gujarat) India

    • VS says:

      Hi Shailesh

In rashi parivartana, 2 planets have to be in each other’s houses. The concept of each others ‘exalted houses’ does not count in this scenario. Only if saturn is in the rashi of mars and mars in the rashi of saturn will this occur. Thanks

  2. Anurag says:

Lords of all dushtana houses (6th Mercury, 8th Sun & 12th Jupiter) of my chart are sitting together in a dushtana house (6th). What kind of yoga will it be if any? And is it good or bad?

    • VS says:

Its called a Vipreet Raj yoga which means the cancellation of 2 negatives
the effects are like a raj yoga but only after initial struggles and setbacks

  3. Abhishaik Singh says:

Lord of 8th house mars in 12th house along with sun, mercury and venus .lord of 12th house sun in 12th house .Does this create vipareet raj yog?

    • VS says:

yes venus and mer together is a raj yoga but in a bad sign and house. if planets combust, effects will be weaker. Mars combust will not harm but the person will be egoistic and impulsive and crave attention even if secretly and will be a hidden part of his/ her personality

  4. Sundar says:

Sri VS: For a Cancer ascendant + Cancer moon (Lagna and Rasi are same) is Mars’ debilitation removed in Cancer? Thank you.

  5. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Quoting here for convenience: “However the exchange of a Kendra or Kona lord with a dusthana lord (6/8/12) is a negative Yoga and causes miseries”.
How about an exchange of Kendra and 11th lord?

    Thank you.

  6. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
To quote you for convenience for Parivartana:
” the planets behave functionally as if they are sitting in their own signs respectively”.
    Question:
If Saturn is in Pisces and Jupiter is in Capricorn (18 degrees), isn’t the bad effect of Jupiter’s neecha position nullified or mitigated substantially?

    • VS says:

depends on the houses they are placed in. if dusthanas are not involved (3,6,8 & 12) then the negative effects of Jupiter will be much less. But still one is in debilitated sign and the other is neecha abhilashi (one sign before debilitation)

so this can give feeble good results

  7. r says:

Is vipreet raj yoga formed by mutual aspect? JHora seems to calculate it that way..

    • VS says:

yes mutual aspect can be either conjunction, opposition or mutual aspect like saturn 4 places ahead of mars where both will aspect each other

      • r says:

Thanks. This yoga isn’t effective when it involves Saturn as lord of 8th and 9th too right?

Also in your experience it has effect if two planets are in mutual kendras, such as 12th and 3th house?

  8. Rahul says:

Mr vivek can you please explain whether rahu and ketu can participate in firmation of vipreet rajyoga as lord of acquarious and scorpio respectively

    • VS says:

      Not really
rahu/ ketu even though co-rulers of these signs, will reflect the planets that conjunct/ aspect them as well as the lord of their rashi and nakshatra depositors more than these signs themselves. Unless ofcourse they sit in these signs

  9. Rahul says:

Thanks mr vivek for ur elaborate answer.i ve one more question and i need ur kind explanation.does rajyogas work in this modern world?i ve read that mr k n rao once said that rajyogas are not very
effective in modern world.further i ve seen two birth charts with dharmakarmadhipati yog but natives are ordinary people..i think this yog might be activated later in future so how can one determine the timing of activation?i ve went through some videos of mr sanjay rath class in which he said that highest form of yogas must get activated first then the lesser yogas wud get activated..what is ur opinion?please reply

    • VS says:

The context of Yogas and their results has changed much since the ancient times when these scriptures were written
back then being rich meant having lots of animals, as an example. Now obviously it does not. Back then desh nikaala (going out of the country) was the worst punishment possible. Now its something most people actually want etc.
one has to change the definition of Yogas as per the Desh, kaal and paristhiti – (culture, time and situation)

Along with yogas, one has to see the Duryogas which can cancel the good effects of most Good Yogas at times. the exact strength of the yoga and the planets causing the yogas is also something that is vital. the yogas will show results when the maturity age of the planet has happened and when the dasas of involved planets or their conjunct planets occur. Saturn transiting over the yoga area or trinal to the yoga area will also trigger a yoga in a horoscope. rest one can learn from experience and case studies

  10. Rahul says:

Thanks vivek ji for your kind reply..i m grateful to you..this us best explanation i got related to rajyoga..please write articles on navamsha and dashamsha also.thanks again

  11. Sundar says:

VS, Re: Neecha Bhang RajYoga..are the rules applicable to D-9? E.g. Saturn in Aries and Mars in Libra? BTW, Mars in the 9-th won’t do it, just to make sure..Thanks.

  12. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Just about neecha bhang without the yoga part: I read the following:
“If a debilitated planet is aspected by another debilitated planet or by its own dispositor”
E.g. Saturn in Aries, Sun in Libra.
    Is this true?

    • VS says:

yes if a debilitated planet is aspected by its depositor or conjunct with its depositor, the debilitation is cancelled to a large extent
if this also happens to be a Kendra house, then there is a raj yoga due to it, if its a non Kendra sthana, the cancellation of debilitation is still there but not the raj yoga

  13. Thirumal Kumar says:

    Hi VS….
I just wanted to input my thought here after going through BPHS.

As far as my understanding goes, the words neecha bhanga is not separated from neech bhanga raja yoga. When there is a bhanga to the neecha, in itself forms a Raj Yoga. The words ‘i yoga’s does not always partain to Kendra or trikona. For example, vipareeta Raj Yoga. In VRY, only dushthanas are involved. So, in my understanding if there is a peculiar formation between planets and if it’s capable of giving u something(good/bad) then it is said as ‘yoga’. If the same is capable of giving u something good that which will rise you above your current life standards then it becomes a ‘Raj yoga’. Most of the Raj yogas are formed between Kendra & trikona because Kendra and trikona has the best chance of rising you above the present scenario. But, it’s not always the kendra & trikona. It’s all about unique formation of planets and the strength of the planets invovled in producing it.

Well, I just wanted to share my perception about what I understood from BPHS.

I would humbled with your inputs.

    – perpetual student of astrology.

    • VS says:

      Hi Thirumal

in practice, if neecha bhang happens with a strong depositor and in kendra, it leads to a raj yoga…else it is a mere cancellation of debility and not necessarily a raj yoga

  14. Pradhan says:

    Hi VS,

In above article you have mentioned that, vipareeta raja yoga is a conjunction or mutual aspect of 2 dusthana lords in a dusthana house.

Lagna is Karka, Saturn in 6th house and Mercury in 12 house, both are placed in dusthana houses aspecting each other, VRJ exists as per above rule, how ever Saturn is also receiving aspect from Jupiter (from 10th house) who is lord of 6th as well as 9th house.

You have stated that planets involving in VRY should not be aspected by planets owing 2,5,9 houses how ever in this case, Saturn is receiving aspect from Jupiter(benefic) who is also the 6th lord, what are the effects in general? Does VRY still exist in this scenario?

    Thanks,
    Pradhan

    • VS says:

VRY occurs in any house when 2 dusthan lords combine. if 8th and 12th combine in 9th bhaav, they will still create VRY but then they will tend to also spoil the 9th house significations
one has to see how strong the 9th bhaav lord is in this case, if strong enough, then VRY will give good results after some initial damage/ delay related to 9th bhaav etc

  15. Anirudh says:

    Hi VS,

What are the effects of yoga involved between mutual aspect of 4th and 7th lords?

4th lord is Venus and 7th lord is Saturn, both are great friends how ever both are not benefic for lagna, so in this case will the yoga still work as they are best friends and lord of Kendra?

Or will it not work as both are not benefic to the lagna?

What are the effects if the yoga is occurring in a dusthana house between 6th and 12 house forming Samasapthaka?

    Regards,
    Anirudh

    • VS says:

nothing in astrology is ONLY good or ONLY bad…
like real life, most things are a shade of grey
so interpret each combination with a similar mind set

  16. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
With Sun in Libra, will an aspect from its exaltation lord Mars give NRY? If true, what if Mars is in Cancer?

    Thx.

    • VS says:

      no NRY in this case

    • r pristine says:

Sir; “neech grah near edge of sign will give minimal results of their potential in th sign”. So neechbhang yog by its sign-lord will not be applicable,I think.
But if such neech grah is near Bhava-Madhya falling in same sign, THEN can neechbhang by its lord be VALID?? Thanks in anticipation.Regards.

  17. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
If the lord of the 5th or 9th aspects the house where VRY forms, does it affect the yoga?

  18. Pratheek says:

    Hello VS,

First of all, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to you for taking some valuable time out of your life and maintaining this wonderful website. Your website is by far the most logical and well-reasoned one on this subject that I have seen and it is nothing short of a boon for beginners like me.

Now, regarding my doubt, in your explanation of Neech Bhanga Raja yoga, you have listed some conditions for the occurrence of the yoga. However, in some of the other literature explaining the yoga also indicate one other condition which you have not listed here i.e. that the yoga also occurs if the depositor of the sign of exaltation of the debilitated planet, sits in a kendra from the lagna. It would be wonderful, if you could clarify whether your omission of this condition was intentional and if so, the reason for the same.

    Thanking you again.
    Regards,
    Pratheek

    • VS says:

      Hi Pratheek
thanks for the kind words. The omission indeed was intentional. I wrote down the points I feel are valid after my own research over the last 2 decades. Now that is not to say that what is mentioned in scriptures is incorrect etc. All I am implying is that my research has not shown the same

      • Pratheek says:

Thank you so much for your answer
If you may please clarify another doubt regarding this topic, so, if the debilitated planet sits with an exalted planet, but, the lord of the depositor of the house where they are conjoined sits at 6/8 from the house, does this lead to a neech bhanga rajayoga or just neech bhanga?
In the case in point, if mercury and venus join together in pisces at the 10th house, but jupiter lies in 6th from 10th at the 3rd house in leo, then would this lead to a manifestation of a neech bhanga rajayoga or would the depositor being at 6/8 from it hinder its results to some extent?

        • VS says:

it can be a neecha bhang but reduced intensity. Also if moon is in a kendra position here, then neecha bhang will be complete, else partial

          • Pratheek says:

So, if the moon is in a kendra in this case, it would lead to complete neecha bhanga, but no neecha bhanga rajayoga, yes?

Thank you so much for your valuable inputs.
            Regards.

          • VS says:

if moon is in Kendra, it will lead to a neechbhang raj yoga if the planets are within 5 – 25 degrees in the rashi and also if they are within a few degrees of each other

  19. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Re: Neecha Bhang RajYoga, I have heard this can also be seen from the chandra lagna . Example, Mars in Cancer, Moon in Capricorn.
    Please opine.

  20. SJ says:

Regarding parivarthana yoga, does exchanging the properties mean nature of the planet changes or does it mean they behave like they are in their own sign, or both. For example, if Me and Sa exchange in 1-6 house (Virgo ascendant) do you analyze the chart. Mercury or Saturn in 6th house is usually good but I am trying to understand how Saturn in 1 house would behave? More like Mercury in first house or more like Saturn the owner of 5th and 6th house with more power towards the 6th house activities as this where exchange happens.

    • VS says:

General Nature of no planet ever changes, regardless of its placement or yogas
Functional Nature of planets change as per rulerships, placements, aspects, yogas and strengths etc.

when 2 planets exchange houses, they behave as if conjunct because the functional effects of one gets transferred to the other and vice versa. however if they are also 6-8 or 2-12 to each other, then the effects also become to some extent blocked or hard to come.

      • SJ says:

Does that mean mercury would behave as lord of 6th house and 10th house, while Saturn would behave as lord of 1st and 5th house or would Mercury and Saturn both share responsibilities of 1, 5, 6 and 10th house and you would see the impact on all four houses during both dasas.

      • SJ says:

Does 6-8 and 2-12 rule apply when looking at planet placement and houses they rule without parivartan.

  21. Hello VS ,

Thanks for sharing knowledge and replying to queries. In last 3 or 4 days since I started reading your articles and comments I have improved my knowledge.

    I have following query:
For Capricorn Lagna, Jupiter lord of 3rd and 12th house a Functional malefic is in 6thouse (Gemini) alone in punarvasu Nakshatra. I believe its a Viprit Raaj yoga.

It is going to Venus MD and Jup Ant. Dasha starting from Oct 2018. What I should expect in its antar dasha. Is it right a natural benefic Jupiter even if FM but sitting alone does not give bad result?

Do you think doing any kind of remedy of FM Planet which is owner of 3rd and 12th house?

    Thanks and Regards,
    Jaidev Sharma

    • VS says:

i dont think jupiter is a functional malefic for capricorn (regardless of what is written and infinitely copy pasted in texts). saturn feels neutral towards jupiter. jupiter feels neutral towards saturn. so how can it be a functional malefic? its mooltrikona sign falls in 12th yes which by parasara is a neutral house by itself. Jupiter will give results as per its placement. If sitting in a trine the results will depend on the strength of trine lord. if the trine lord is strong, jupiter will give great results

take Obama or george clooney’s horoscope. capricorn lagna. Jupiter in lagna debilitated. gave massive raj yoga to them
why? jupiter is neutral in their case it is in lagna with lagna lord. saturn will dominate and jupiter will act functionally like saturn but its own general nature. in addition this forms neecha bhang raj yoga too.
likewise if jupiter is in virgo with mercury, then jupiter will give excellent results as mercury will dominate in strength and jupiter will be in 9th with 9th lord.

on the other hand if jupiter is in 7th house, it will almost certainly damage marriage unless moon is strong and bright as in 7th jupiter will dominate being exalted 12th lord of loss in 7th

if you practice astrology as 11th good, 12th bad, predictions will not be accurate. learn via real case studies is my suggestion

      • Sundar says:

VS, I am reading BPHS and in Chapter 34 (Yoga karakas), sloka 39-40, it states that Chandra, Guru and Mangal are malefics for Makar lagna. I am reading from https://archive.org/stream/ParasharaHoraSastra/BrihatParasharaHoraSastraVedicAstrologyEbook_djvu.txt, a translation by Santanam.
99% of my knowledge is from you. Just want to point out that, with regards to functional nature, BPHS does not take into consideration the relationship between the asc lord and the other planet. lords of 3rd, 6 and 11 are FMs.
        Kindly let me know..

        Thanks as always.

        • VS says:

          Hi Sundar,

BPHS is the father of jyotish and should always be read and taken seriously. however what I have done over time is evolve my own rules from experience. I dont think that Jupiter is a malefic for capricorn for example. does not mean that it is a benefic either. I think it acts as per its placement and impact on it. Many Yogas mentioned in classics will have mercury and venus opposite to each other or in 4th to each other or sun and mercury in 3rd houses from each other – things which can not happen in real life astronomy as venus and mercury are never more than 77 degrees apart and sun and mercury are never more than 28 degrees apart etc. secondly the interpretation of yogas has far changed since 1000s of yrs back. back then 12th influence or foreign travel or residence was always bad and negative, now a days, many people in the eastern countries would love to travel and settle west. etc.

in conclusion, knowing the basics of BPHS is critical. however applying all rules verbatim is dangerous. Theoretical astrology is all fine. Practical predictive astrology in todays world comes only via experience of 1000s of case studies

      • Thanks VS,

Thanks for reply and giving tip on case studies.

        Thanks and Regards,

      • Sundar says:

        Vivek,
Re: your observation of an exalted Jupiter sitting alone for a capricorn asc and it’s damage to the 7th house, here’s a case of a divorced male. To note, 7th lord is Moon is exalted too. Does this make the damage to the 7th house stronger by adding power to Jupiter? Kindly comment.

        September 22, 1978, 15:42, Bangalore.

        • VS says:

No. Exalted moon will try and protect its portfolio. However the dasas of Jupiter itself in this case can be very damaging to marriage. the strength of moon means eventually one marriage will survive and potentially thrive simultaneously with some issues in the marriage

          • APR says:

Hi VS , how will the results be modified if the exalted jupiter sitting alone in 7th house for a capricorn asendant, is also in a parivartan yog with 7th house lord moon (moon is situated in 12th house of pisces)? Will it damage the 7th house more in its dasha so as to destroy the marriage. ..or exchange yog will provide equal strength to moon protect the 7th house significations. Please share your views.
            September 11, 1978, 16:55, Delhi.

          • VS says:

no personal readings here. an exchange of 12th and 7th lords for capricorn will lead to the loss of atleast one marriage. Even multiple marriage failures are possible

      • Baskar says:

        Depositor Strength:

I understand that it is better to have a strong Rashi , Nakshatra or Navamsa depositor.

Please let me know if we need to consider the functional nature of the depositor? If the depositor is strong but a functional malefic, how does that work out?

        Please let me know.

        Thanks again!

        • VS says:

Yes ofcourse. the functional nature of the depositors is of paramount importance as is the dignity of the planet(s) themselves. strong planets will always give good results of their general characteristics. Like mars for all represents energy, passion, drive, ability to perservere etc. An exalted mars will tend to give all these in the nature of the person which is good. However if the ascendant is virgo and mars is a functional malefic and exalted, any planet in the house of mars will give functionally negative results

          • Sundar says:

VS, In the case of Virgo asc and Mars being exalted I believe Mars will not do good for the 5th bhaav by itself ( apart from it not doing good to the disposited) ?

          • VS says:

an exalted planet always does some good as well. Mars exalted in 5th can give a sharp mind, especially in technical areas. It can also give a son who also might have Mars as a strong planet in their horoscope. Mars in 5th can give luck in sudden gains like speculation/ stock market if Saturn and Jupiter aspect it and are placed well

          • Baskar says:

            Great learning from you.

            I am indebted to you.

            Thank you for teaching me.

          • Prem says:

Just for clarification. For Taurus ascendent, if Jupiter is exalted, it will give all the good characteristics of Jupiter although it is functional malefic. Now let’s say Saturn is sitting in 11th house pisces, will it give functional malefic results even though it is yogkarka for Taurus. Thank you.

          • VS says:

Saturn itself will likely give great results for money and career in this case. Jupiter can give good results from siblings of the person but by itself will make them a bit lazy and/ or not aggressive or determined enough. they might have a mild and giving/ forgiving nature which can bring trouble to them and friends/ colleagues will take advantage of them

          • Prem says:

            Thank you.

          • avnish says:

I have mars exalted in 5th house which is aspected by saturn which is in 3rd house of scorpio…since I have saturn in the house of mars would it give me negative results…and does it qualify as vipareet parivartan yoga since they are also lord of 6th and 8th house respectively which is their mooltrikona signs

          • VS says:

no such thing as vipreet parivartan yoga. both mars and saturn will have a tendency to give negative results in this case but also depends on the other planets and yogas

  22. AJ says:

    Dear Vivek,
For Gemini Lagna, If saturn is in 12th house and venus in 8th house, does it cause a favorable parivartan and favorable vipreet raj yoga? Its confusing since saturn is lord of 8 and 9 and venus is lord of 5 and 12.
    Please explain if possible.
    Thanks
    AJ

  23. Sundar says:

    Hello Vivek,
During the MD of a planet, if it’s dispositor is in a VRY (assuming the MD of the dispositor is yet to come), can the VRY kick in?

    Thank you.

  24. Sundar says:

Hello Vivek,, re:NBRY, many videos say that if the Lord of the rasi (say Moon for Mars’ neech) is in a kendra from the asc or moon, NBRY occurs.
Is this completely untrue or is it a neech bhang but not a raj yoga? i.e. is it similar to if Mars in Cancer and Jupiter in Capricorn I believe a neech bhang occurs, but not a yoga?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

NBRY happens in many different ways. What you have described is one of the ways. generally speaking the NBRY planet should be in Kendra from lagna atleast, moon is secondary. but if in Kendra from both lagna and moon, its better. secondly one has to see the divisional placements and shadbal of the neecha planet as well. say mars is debilitated but in 10th bhaav for libra with moon in lagna as well. It has full directional strength and is in Kendra from both moon and lagna
Also if this mars has a shadbal of 8 rupas or 160% then there is complete NBRY and this Mars can give elevated and powerful administrative positions to the native

  25. Laxmi says:

    Good morning sir,
For cancer ascendent moon in saggitarius, Jupiter in gemini and Mars in cancer, does moon in 6th indicate life long suffering from enemies and Jupiter in 12 does this indicate living in foreign land or just staying in different city in same country? Is Mars here to be considered as benefic?

  26. vishu says:

    Hi vs
Sun Saturn in 2nd house in Libra
Mars Venus in 12th house in leo
Is there any neech bhagna rajyog
    Plz reply

  27. Sundar says:

    Vivek,
About NBRY: Say Mercury sitting with Venus in Pisces for a libra asc.
    1. Since the rajayoga will manifest in the 6th house, does it give good results?
    2. Since Mercury controls speech, nervous system etc, does the rajayoga offset the loss of natural karakatvas of the planet?

    • VS says:

if they are close enough in degrees (within 8 to 10 degress) there will be yoga but it will be tainted
some health issues can not be avoided – nervous system/ feet related/ intestinal issues will manifest. Jupiter if strongly placed will alleviate the health issues to a large extent. If Jupiter in first 5 degrees of Capricorn or deeply combust, will cause serious health issues. Urinary and kidney problems can exist as well

      • Sundar says:

        Related question Vivek:
The lord of 2nd and 7th (mars) is sitting in the 3rd with Yogakkara Saturn. Both are sitting in friend’s rasi. Saturn is neutral to Mars and so Mars does not get agitated and its ability to protect its house is not lessened..am I correct here?

        • VS says:

mars will not be affected due to proximity of saturn, infact its energy gets disciplined and hence increased. saturn on the other hand is agitated when along with mars and becomes angry if the degrees are closer than 8

      • APR says:

Hi VS, a related query to NBRY – Taurus ascendant with both sun and venus conjunct ay 12 degrees in 6th house of Libra. Moon is placed in 9th house at 10 degrees. Is the debilitated sun forming a NBRY as it is placed in Kendra from moon but not from ascendant ? Ascendant rising is also 12 degrees. Will the native be able to overcome the effect of debilitated sun in 6th house?

        • VS says:

          No NBRY, just NB
this can lead to serious health problems if lagna degree is close to 12

          • APR says:

Yes sir, indeed the native is an 11 yr old girl with issues surfacing in expressive language, academics and lower than average IQ levels. She also has a vish yoga in her kundali with 3rd and 9th house lord exchange..moon is at 10 degrees in Capricorn and saturn at 29degrees in cancer. Mercury is closely conjunct with jupiter in 7th house of scorpio at 1 degree. 7th house lord mars is combust in 6th house at 10 degrees. Which factors should I specifically consider to see if she will overcome these issues in near future.. Currently, started Mars mahadasha.

          • VS says:

learning will improve, however health issues including eye surgeries, urinary tract infections and kidney issues will surface in life

  28. kundan raj says:

Hi vs..leo lagna….mercury in pisces in 8th house….moon is in first house and jupiter is in 7th house.is it neechbhang rajyog? .it will be good?

    • VS says:

no NBRY as you define it, not even neecha bhang

      • kundan raj says:

But vs….depositor jupiter is in kendra and here it is also kendra pfrom moon.please clarify.

        • VS says:

For any NBRY, first look at the planet itself. if not in Kendra, any NBRY does not exist. Although NB can be happening if the depositor is strong

      • vidya says:

Is it no NB because mercury being in 8th and not in a kendra? Its dispositor jupiter is in a kendra from lagna and from moon.

If venus is in 8H kanya and mercury (with sun and moon) in 7H simha. Is this a NB?

        • VS says:

for NBRY, a planet has to be in Kendra from lagna and even better if from moon also. depositor is secondary. Primary is the planet itself. secondly the depositor should be in high dignity and bal. also the relationship of planet and depositor should not be 6-8 or 2-12 ideally

  29. Vishwajit says:

    Sir,
For Capricorn rising sun is the Lord of 8th house and is delibilated in Libra. The ashtakavarga score is 6. Can this give mix results.
Also what is good or bad score.
Can you share some literature on this.
    Thanks and regards, Vh

  30. Jaidev Sharma says:

    Hi VS,

For Cap. lagna Moon is maraka because its owner of 7th house (Cancer). What if 7th Lord Moon(Marak) is in 7th house(Cancer) than following moon chart (Cancer rising) lagna lord is in lagna itself.

In this case if Moon is weak because of conjunction with Sun (2nd lord) should we do any remedy for moon or sun? would you please suggest any remedy ?

    • VS says:

I can not suggest remedies or conclusions with incomplete info. Also not looking at personal charts or individual readings currently.

  31. Sundar says:

Vivek, for an Aquarius asc with Rahu in the 11th (neech in saggi), 7th house has Rahu’s dispositor Jupiter and Moon. Hence the dispositor is in a kendra from asc and Moon. Does this cause just NB or NBRY? Jupiter is 5th aspecting Rahu. Is there an additional +ve or -ve effect to this aspect given that Jupiter is FN for this asc? Does the Gajakesari yoga affect this aspect?

    • VS says:

rahu will give wealth in this situation and closer the Jupiter aspect, more the wealth. Moon trinal to rahu will give sickness and potential for accidents/ injuries
Mind can be obsessed with wealth/ power or other materialistic possessions

      • Sundar says:

        VS,
Are trinal conjunctions based on D-1 or Bhaav chart?

        Thanks.

        • VS says:

you should know this by now. There is no concept of D1 or bhav

          all that matters is degrees
exact trine means exact 120 degrees. if 2 planets are 122 degrees apart and one is 29 degrees in virgo and other is 1 degree in aquarius. they become 6-8 in D1. their trinal relation remains almost 95% strong

          • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. When you look at planetary aspects like when you show a chart to an astrologer, a 7th (or special) aspect is considered as such, without without going into degrees as such. Can that lead to grossly inaccurate analysis? In the trine case, I was looking at Jupiter in Leo and Rahu in Saggi and thought there was a trinal conjunction. This could be completely inaccurate too, wouldn’t it.? A comment from you is requested.

          • VS says:

No idea what you talking about

if jup in Leo and Rahu in saggi, ofcourse they are trinal to each other. But its all abour degrees. if jup say 10 degrees in leo, rahu at 12 degrees in saggi, then they are strongly trinal

if jup at 10 degrees in leo and rahu at 29 degrees in saggi, then they are 19 degrees apart from the exact trinal point and will give very weak aspectual results. dont know where all this gets complicated?

  32. Gururaj says:

    Dear VS ,
Could you please tell if Sun , Moon and Jupiter are all together in 12th house in scorpio , will it give rise to VRY ? and what will be the strength of that yoga as moon and Jupiter are with Sun?
    Thanks,
    Gururaj

    • VS says:

if they are too close to sun, they are also combust. Otherwise if mars is strong in the chart, some yoga will result, else no yoga but no avayoga as well

  33. BR says:

    Hi VS,

What placements, aspects, and houses should one look at in a horoscope to see if one would be successful in entrepreneurship i.e. having one’s own company and that too a successful one?

From what I’ve heard, if second lord is in 12th house, it indicates one will do a job i.e. work for someone else. Also, if Saturn impacts the 10th house of career then since Saturn represents servant, it means the person will do a job. Is that correct?

Since you live in USA you know that people these days have multiple careers in life. They do job for some time, get an idea, start their own company, sell it and then work for someone else again or start a new company.

So, the traditional view of one career per life, where one had to choose between a job or entrepreneurship is less true these days than it was perhaps during Parasar’s time. Any thoughts?

    • VS says:

overall the point you are making falls under – Desh Kaal and paristhiti which parasara mentions in his teachings

readings without taking those into account will be meaningless and usually incorrect. that is why knowing the theory is vital, however case studies of modern era and location specific understanding of culture/ education/ work etc will lead to finer readings with experience

      • BR says:

Thanks, VS! That, though did not answer my question 🙂

“What placements, aspects, and houses should one look at in a horoscope to see if one would be successful in entrepreneurship i.e. having one’s own company and that too a successful one?”

We can look at horoscopes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, MZ etc….but what is a common thread in such horoscopes?

Is it some association of 5th house with 10th or 11th house?

        • VS says:

10th house is career. 3rd house is self effort and 1st house is self. when there is commonality (yogas, exchanges and impact) of these lords with each other, one can predict self initiated career or status or entrepreneurship. the natural significations of the planets express what the area might be in. example venus is related to creativity and beauty of all types etc

  34. Vishwa says:

    Dear Sir,

For Capricorn rising, Sun lord of Leo is delibilated in 10th house but exalted in D10 12th house of Aries.
How can you interpret such combination. Can Sun MD period give mix results or be frustrating for the native.

    Regards, Vh

    • VS says:

it all depends on the other planets and yogas that sun in involved in. further the placement and dignity of venus as the depositor of sun is vital to understand for the complete impact of Sun

  35. Rohan says:

    Hi,
I have exalted Jupiter in my 10th house. I am a Libra Ascendent. This would place my Jupiter in the sign of Cancer. Along with Jupiter I have Ketu in the 10th house as well. Does this form a Panch Mahapurush Yoga?
    Thank you.

  36. Rahul says:

I have mars debilitated in 5th house for pieces lagna and saturn exalted in 8th house aspecting mars..will my mars debilitation get cancelled..and is mars debilitated in 5th house good or bad since mars is like a yogakaraka planet for pieces lagna and also being 9th house lord in 9th house from its house..please let me know

  37. Amit says:

I have virgo lagna with venus and mercury conjunct in 2nd house of libra with jupiter aspecting it from 6th house which is with moon in 6th house and saturn in 3rd house and mars exalted in 5th house(interexchange between mars and saturn) which planets are good for me..thanks

    • VS says:

hard to say like this and good and bad is subjective. mercury and venus conjunct in 2nd house for virgo is certainly a raj yoga in itself

      • amit says:

Thanks for the answer…just wanted to know if such a mercury gets debilitated in navamsa in 1st house of pieces would such a mercury give bad result since it also gains digbala in 1st house and venus is in 4th house of gemini where again it gets digbala..are such placements of venus and mercury good in navamsa considering they form good raja yoga in main lagna chart

  38. Rahul says:

Hi vivek sir how are you..sir what is the condition for nicha bhang of mercury?as mercury is exalted in its own sign so if it is placed in kendra from lagna and moon or jupiter and venus give NB if they are placed in kendra from lagna or moon?

    • VS says:

neecha bhang rules are slightly subjective. generally
      1) if planet is in a neecha sign but the neecha lord sits with it. example mars in cancer but moon also conjunct mars in cancer
      2) if the Uccha planet sits with the planet. example mars in cancer with Saturn
      3) if an exalted planet sits with the neecha planet. example mars in cancer with Jupiter
      4) if the lord of depositor of neecha planet is uccha and if the neecha planet is in a Kendra house. example mars in cancer for Capricorn lagna and moon exalted in the 5th bhaav

generally NB can happen in a non Kendra house. example venus in 12th bhaav in virgo with mercury is NB but if it happens in a Kendra house, then it becomes NB raj yoga

  39. Rahul says:

    Thanks vivek sir

  40. Shyam says:

    Dear vs,

Does an exalted jupiter in 7th house give raja yoga for capricon asdentant..and if the depositor of jupiter ie moon is in 12th house of saggitarus does it enhance it or affects it since its in 12th house.

    • VS says:

No raj yoga with the 12th lord exalted in a Kendra. Hamsa yoga will give general benefic but not functional benefic results
moon in 12th will make things worse and chances of a normal marriage will go to 0

  41. Sachin says:

    Dear Vs Sir,

Haven’t heard much about the effects of venus exalted in 8th house for leo ascendant..does a natrual benefic planet exalted in 8th house give bad result in its dasa

    • VS says:

it can give money (aspect on 2nd). career will become uncertain with some ups and downs due to 10th lord being in 8th house. by itself venus is a functional malefic for leo and hence its exaltation will increase its general benefic results but also increase its functional negative results in the chart. afflicted or combust venus here can cause an early death as 3rd lord in 8th and both these represent life span. the person can also be very lazy in general, especially regarding their career/ job

  42. Ramnarayan says:

    Dear Vs,

What if a person has dharma karmatipati yoga in both his main d1 chart and navamsa chart(in 1st and 2nd house) does it increase the overall strenght of the chart..does dharma karmatipati yoga give huge wealth.

    • VS says:

its a good yoga to have. In divisionals, you can not look at them as stand alone horoscopes. You have to analyze the dignity of the planets with respect to the main D1 chart only

      • Ramnarayan says:

Have heard that best results of dharma karmatipati yoga is seen for virgo lagna since both lord of 9th and 10th are benefic for lagna..what if this yoga is found in 2nd house in libra sign for virgo lagna with mercury and venus conjunct in 2nd house..does this conjunction also lead to maha laxmi yoga..and are the effects of this string yoga there only in mahadasa and antardasa or throughout life one can experience this good effect

        • VS says:

once triggered by proper dasa and transits, the yogas can remain life long

          • Ramnarayan says:

            Dear Vs,

Are you aware of any yoga named vishnu yoga..one of the astrologers whom i met had said looking in my kundali that I have a vishnu yoga..which is a very good raja yoga..virgo lagna with mercury and venus in 2nd house of libra and lord of 9th house ie venus is in mercury navamsa(gemini) in 4th house in navamsa..these combinations qualify as vishnu yoga..is that right

          • VS says:

yes based on the navamsa sign of certain planets and their placements in D1, some yogas are formed. You can google Vishnu yoga and read on it. It is a very good yoga to have in a chart

          • Baskar says:

            Dear VS Ji,

For some people even though they make have a Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga etc., their corresponding planetary dasha period may not come in their lifetime. So, in that case, will such yogas get activated when the corresponding planet attains maturity age?

          • VS says:

other planets and karakas conjunct with the planets or trinal with them will also dispense the results in their own MDs

  43. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
Can graha mallika yog be considered on this basis off placement of planets in continuous 4 house as i am confused about continuous 5 house or 4 house and also mr pvr narsimh rao says that planets in continuous 4 houses can be considered as gahaha mallika yog

    • VS says:

malika means mala or beads in a necklace…both 4 or 5 continous are technically a malika yoga

      • Vidya says:

        Vivek-ji
Are these graha mallika yoga (or maala yoga) in D1 but only 3 planets are involved (nodes are not involved)?
        1. 6L goes to 7H, 7L goes to 8H, 8L goes to 9H
        2. 8L goes to 9H, 9L goes to 10H, 10L goes to 11H
Starting from dusthana and ending in benefic houses – what do they indicate?
        Thanks

        • VS says:

yes they are Malika yoga(s). the effects in functionality will depend on rulerships as well as the strength (avastha/ shadbal) etc of the planets and can not be generalized as good or bad

  44. rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
lord of 6 8 or 12 house mutually aspecting and placed in houses other than 6 8 12 house give rise to VIPREET RAJYOG?simply i am talking about vipreet rajyog by mutual aspect.pleass give your opinion

    • VS says:

yes they can. just that in this case the bhaav they are placed in will also get spoiled to some extent. Example a Strong VRY happening in the 9th house can give bad luck followed by sudden great windfall or money/ luck gain

  45. Baskar says:

    Dear VS ji,

How do we interpret a strong Gaja kesari yoga that happens in a dusthana like 8 or 12?

These are part of Moksha trikona and not kendra. Hence , I think that it may not give material benefits but might help with Moksha.. What if other Spiritual planets like Ketu and Saturn also placed any of these Moksha Trikona houses?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much.

    • VS says:

Could be very good for the spiritual enlightenment of the individual. however not possible to make sweeping statements. Generally speaking, the person will be kind hearted and have a spiritual or religious bent of mind. Can also be someone who helps others even monetarily and hence giving their own money/ assets to others

  46. Amit says:

    Hi VS Ji,
I am new to astrology and would like to ask question on Neech bhang raj yoga.lagna is Sagittarius and moon is in 1house and mars in 8 house in cancer with rahu but at 28 degree and rahu at 5 degree,as per above definition if i understood it should apply for neech bhang but one of the renowned astrologer told to the person since person’s mother died early this will not appliacble for neech bhag since mother was providing that yoga. I am not sure how that is applicable but would like to know your view as per practical astrology and experience.
Thank you for help selfless service

    • VS says:

generally speaking the 1st and most important condition for neecha bhang raj yoga is that the debilitated planet should be in a Kendra bhaav from lagna
Next are other conditions like the planet conjunct with its depositor or another exalted planet etc.if saggi ascendant and mars not in Kendra from lagna while debilitated, there is no NBRY regardless of moon being in kendra

  47. Aditya says:

    Dear VS,

A person is born with delibilated sun in swati nakshtra. Rahu is also there. The gap between the two is 9*.
Can initial part of Sun MD be trouble some.
Could the period ease out after the initial 2-3 years. Do we need to know the current transit.
    Please share.

    • VS says:

unfortunately I cant say with incomplete data as it becomes speculation. In order to analyze properly, I need to look at the chart which I can not due to time constraints

  48. Raj says:

    Dear vs,

Have heard and seen on net and also from my experience that most of the richest people have Virgo,Libra and saggitarus ascendant is it true..and planets in which house give great wealth if in good diginity and own house..in 2,10,11??

    • VS says:

Could be your observation. I think no single lagna can be good in general so to speak. However some lagnas might be ‘luckier’ than the others. say Gemini. None of the dusthanas – 6,8,12 have a mooltrikona sign in them and the lord of 12th and 8th remain benefic as they rule trines also. on the other hand pisces can be a difficult lagna as all 3 dusthanas have MK signs in them and in addition Mercury becomes potential for strong kendradipatti dosa.

that said any lagna ruled by a general benefic like venus, mercury or Jupiter gets a small advantage as being ruled by a mild planet as opposed to a harsh planet like saturn

      • Raj says:

        Thank you for your reply.

For pieces lagna Does a benefic aspect of jupiter in good house like from 4th house on other planet modify the evil results of bad planets..like exalted saturn in 8th house with rahu and mercury get aspect from jupiter which is in 4th house lessens the harmful effects of these 3planet which are bad planets for pieces ascendant??

        • VS says:

too much generalization will not help anyone. However if pisces ascendant and Saturn is exalted in the 8th house, it will increase life span and not do much harm. can make the person fearless and long lived by itself. other planets will dictate other results

      • BR says:

Good observation. Though, for Gemini, Jupiter will suffer from Kendraadhipati dosha. But, I guess still it’s slightly better than other lagnas….

  49. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For a gemini asc, when Jupiter and Venus form a raj yoga in the 5th, does Jupiter’s discomfort in Libra cause a delay to the yoga?

  50. Abhay says:

    Dear VS,

Need your help to understand upachya house and how the planet give results(specific to 6th house)..does a natrual malefic give good result in 6th house over a time or even temperal malefic(lagna malefic) give good results over time..suppose for virgo lagna if moon and jupiter both together occupy 6th house how would their result be since they both are natrual benefic but lagna malefic..thanks

    • VS says:

malefics in 6th make a person aggresive in nature and cunning as well as ambitious…if afflicted, they can also cause sickness, accidents, surgeries, litigation and debts

over time planets placed in 6th bhaav will slowly improve in their general significations

  51. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
Can a trikone lord form raj yoga in combination with kendra lord even though it is lord of dushthana also

  52. Aditya says:

    Sir,

If Saturn is in 7th house of cancer, it will aspect 9th house – Virgo. The house is empty. In this case will Saturn create obstacles in bhagya sthana and till what age.
    Thanks and regards, ad

    • VS says:

there is no such thing. saturn is lagna lord and a benefic. all other aspects on saturn and 9th as well as on mercury as 9th lord will dictate total results

  53. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
If a planet is debilitated in Rasi but sits in the previous bhav in Chalit, is it still debilitated to the same extent?

    • VS says:

moving in chalit does not mean that its rashi changes. chalit means the bhaav chart. the planet will remain debilitated whether it moves in the chalit chart or not

  54. krish says:

In a kindali of virgo ascendant if mercury and venus conjunct together in 2nd house of libra within 7degree but mercury gets debilitated in navamsa in 1st house of pices would such a mercury now give bad effects to a native in its dasa and antardasa

  55. rishi says:

    hi,

In Navamsa a planet placed in exalted sign but bad house(6,8,12) would it still be considered good or planet placed in debilitation but in kendra house would be considered good…in short house placement is important or sign placement is important in navamsa.

    • VS says:

in divisionals, the bhaav placement is less important and more important is the rashi
except mercury which gets exalted in own sing, its better to have planets in their own sign vs exalted signs

  56. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
All Yogas including NBRY are to be seen from Rasi chart, correct? Thanks.

  57. Sundar says:

VS, For Cancer Lagna with Jupiter in the 1st and Saturn in the 7th..
Will Saturn still delay marriage? Does the Raj Yoga they form contribute positively to marriage? I am seeing “Successful with High Achievements” as the phal for Rajyogas, nothing to do with spouse/children etc, hence asking.

    Thanks.

  58. Shyam says:

VS, is neech bhang seen only from lagna or also from chandra lagna? I have seen some conflicting information about this.

  59. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

I have a question regarding Vipareetha Raja yoga wherein dusthana lords exchange houses between themselves.

What if their MK houses are not those dusthanas but MK houses are good houses like Kendra or Trikona?

Which one gets precedence ? I tend to think there may not be much VRY effects if both of their MK houses are not dusthana ..pls let me know.

Do we need to consider :

good house lord in dusthana Or. dusthana lord exchange?

    Thanks much.

  60. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
According to mr pvr narsimha rao when 2 planets form a rajyog only the planet with more shadbal out of two will give full effect of rajyog.what is your opinion?

    • VS says:

I dont comment on other people’s observations. Mr Rao is making observations from case studies, which is exactly one has to do if they wish to learn astrology even 5%
No one can learn astrology by reading random articles here or there. Only way is to do 1000s of case studies and you will answer 99 of your own 100 questions…

  61. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
How important are Yogi and AvaYogi concepts in your experience?

    • VS says:

Not much, frankly. I dont have too much experience in applying them. To me 80% of astrology does boil down to the hard core basics of 9 planets, 12 bhaavs and 12 raashis and their combinations. everything else is vital but more like fine tuning as opposed to bigger decision makers of destiny

  62. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
Venus and moon in 3-11 axis create rajyog?

  63. Ananad says:

Just one questions regarding yogas, should we count houses from moon sign or ascendant? I have Saturn and venus in 10th house from moon sign Capricorn, which falls in libra.
    Thank you,

    • VS says:

a horoscope has to be seen from lagna, arudha lagna, moon sign and sun sign for totality. same for all yogas. yogas that repeat in multiple of these lagnas get more powerful

  64. Pratheek VS says:

    VS ji,
If in a birth chart having Gemini ascendant, the 1st and 4th lord Mercury is conjunct with the 5th and 12th lord Venus, in the 10th house at Pisces. Further, this conjunction is aspected by Saturn posited in the 8th house at Capricorn via it’s 3rd dristhi. Now,
    1. In this case how far does the Saturn’s aspect affect the results in the rajayoga formed in the 10th house.
    2. Does the debilitation of the Mercury in this case cancel or seriously impede the rajayoga?
    3. In such a case, if a rajayoga is formed, does the outcome depend more general nature of the planets involved or more on the functionality of the planets involved?

    • VS says:

Saturn will not harm, rather only augment the raj yoga in this case. however all depends on the placement of Jupiter. if it is weak then mercury will not regain back sufficient strength that it has lost due to debilitation, nor will venus be that powerful as the depositor is weak. say in this scenario Jupiter accompanies venus and mercury in the 10th, such a yoga will be very potent if within 10 degrees of each other as well as bhaav madhya

      • Pratheek VS says:

Thank you so much for answer.
Not going too much into the specifics here, but in this particular case, if Jupiter is placed in the house of its good friend, the sun in Leo, would that be considered a good placement? Or, does the depositor being in the 6/8 axis of the house, affect this formation adversely, giving rise to very little to mediocre results? Which of these two factors is to be given more weightage while accessing the strength of the placement?

  65. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
Exchange of sign between two planets results in both house getting stronger then what happens to other planets sitting in these 2 houses?eg venus in cancer and sun and moon in libra.does sun get strength in this case?

    • VS says:

the other planets will also gain strength, however their own dignity will represent how well or not they represent the significations of the houses they own themselves

  66. RV says:

    Hi VS!
Please solve the confusion of combust and yuti.
Kumbh lagan: Tula rashi me Sun 12° aur Shukar 7°
Kya yahan Neech Bhang yog banta hai? Kya yahan (4-7-9) ka rajyog banta hai?
Both have a 10* Sat drishti from Saggi

    • VS says:

if sun and venus in libra then neecha bhang to sun
not sure how saturn in saggitarius can aspect libra? but rest of your assumptions sound fine. thanks

  67. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
When Venus + Budhan is in Kanya for a Mesha lagna but Budhan sits in the 6th bhaav (25 degrees away from Venus), is there a neech bhang if not NBRY? I think NB is bhaav based..

    • VS says:

there will be NB yes but overall venus will still remain weak as 12th from its MK house

      • Rahul says:

        Vivek sir
A planet is weak if it is placed in 8th from mooltrikona house?

        • VS says:

not necessarily at all. example saturn in virgo is in a friends house and approaching exaltation sign (uccha abhilashi). such a saturn even though 8th from aqarius will not yield negative results generally speaking.
same jupiter in cancer. exaltation sign. is 8th from its MK sign

  68. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For a meshha lagna, Saturn is in the 12th rasi but in the 11th house. Venus in poor dignity is aspecting Saturn (12th rasi). I would expect Saturn’s effects to show on the 11th bhaav, but I see that Saturn’s 12th/Venus aspect effects (affairs, scandals) is showing. Am I missing the concept here? Please shed light. Thx.

    • VS says:

can not comment on individual charts unless i study them fully which i dont do here. degrees and time of birth accuracy can be checked…

  69. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Regarding Moon in Mars Rasi in D-9 and being aspected by Saturn (10th) in D-1, called Parivraja yoga, how is it different from Moon not sitting in a D-9 Mars Rasi and being aspected by Saturn?

    • VS says:

It is a yoga in the classics and hence I will not opine on the reason(s) behind it. However moon in a Martian navamsa might give fuel/ energy to whatever yogas the moon forms in D1 and in this case in point when aspected only by Saturn, it will lead to detachment

  70. narasimha says:

    hi Sir,

Will the 8th lord in 8th forms vipareet raj yoga??
here for leo ascendant jupiter sits in 8th.

    • VS says:

no. if a 6th, 8th or 12th lord sits in its own house its called Harsha Yoga, Sarala Yoga and Vimala yoga respectively. Vipreet happens if the lords sit in one of the other houses like 12th in 8th or of two or 3 of these combine

  71. narasimha says:

so here sarala yoga forms know/
what are the advantages of sarala yoga and when it will be activated in the chart

    • VS says:

please read on yogas in phaladeepika of Parasara Hora. There are a lot many yogas and not possible to explain all of the here
I can recommend reading 300 important yogas by Raman which covers the main ones. JHora software covers 185 approximamtely

  72. Rahul says:

    Sir
Yoga should be seen in rashi chart or bhava chart?

    • VS says:

both. only a yoga which exists in both is strong. If a yoga exists in rashi chart but not in bhaav chart, it loses some power though doesnt become 0

      • Rahul says:

        Sir
Conjunction of planets should be seen in bhava chart or rashi chart?if both then which chart should be given priority?

        • VS says:

have answered this many times before. Conjunction is from degrees. if a planet is 29 degrees in taurus and another at 1 degree in gemini, since they are 2 degrees apart, will they be conjunct or not?

  73. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
Thanks sir..actually in many you tube videos all astrologers talk about conjunction with respect to rashi chart any they dont pay any consideration to bhava chart so i got confused

  74. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Is there something called Bhaav parivartan? example Moon is Saggi, Guru in Mithuna in Rasi but in Cancer in Bhaav chart.

    • VS says:

there is no dictum as such. however in phalit jyotish it will surely show impact in life which you can observe by a case to case basis

  75. ravi says:

    Hi VS

If debilitated Moon sitting in 7th Kendra House but its depositor is not in a Kendra from it, then NBY will be applicable to it? How this Moon will behave?

    Regards,
    Ravi

    • VS says:

mars has to be strong, exalted or own house or aspecting moon. moon should also ideally be bright (away from sun)
else no real NBY will results and some problems will remain

  76. ravi says:

    Sri VS,

As you said” the planets sitting in each others house will behave functionally as if they are sitting in their own signs respectively”. So if Saturn and Moon sitting in each others house in Kendra i.e. saturn in 4th and moon in 10th, will they behave as if their own house. How Saturn will be in its MD- Good or Bad.

    Regards,
    Ravi

    • VS says:

they will still give results of the bhaav they sit in, functionally speaking their color or characteristics change as per the signs they are getting exchanged in

      • ravi says:

As you quote “functionally speaking their color or characteristics change as per the signs they are getting exchanged in”

so if they are in inimical sign to each other, with exchange, will their inimical relationship with the sign they are sitting in would change – from enmity to neutral or friendly?

        • VS says:

no planet completely modifies its nature due to a yoga or exchange. It is only altered to some extent. the extent depends on how deeply the planet is impacted and how strong the impacting planet and influence is

  77. Ishwar says:

Sir, taurus ascendant, lords of 1,5,9 in the 7th. 4th lord too. Parivartan between 6th(Venus) and 7th (mars) lords.
In the navamsa. aries asecendant , varagottama mars in 7th conjunct with venus.
How does one look at the chart and do we have to give importance to the navamsa or rasi in this matter?

    • VS says:

i dont do personal readings. But apart from that, ofcourse if 1,5,9 combine and aspect lagna it is a rajyoga unless they are too near the sun in which case the yoga will be weakened ofcourse

      • Ishwar says:

Sir, Thank you for the reply. One of the rare yogas mentioned is the Sankha Yoga. Some have said its important but some have not mentioned it. How do you view this yoga and its importance? Why has this been not mentioned often ?
This yoga involves the 6th, is that why it is omitted sometimes?

        • VS says:

since the yoga involves 5th and 6th lords, it is vital that the 5th lord is stronger than the 6th. Due to dusthana involvement, the yoga is always blemished to some extent and has to be carefully studied. If forming in a good house and the 5th is stronger than 6th then a person can have wealthy children, be competitive in life and attain success after competitions and setbacks but will have a strong mental attitude towards any problem in life

          • Rahul says:

            Sir
5 and 6 th lords are saturn for virgo so how this sankha yog is feasible for this acsendant

          • VS says:

not by pure definition. however if saturn is very strongly placed like exalted or in 5th bhaav without combustion or negative aspect/ conjunction then it will give results similar to shankha yoga independently

  78. Hemlata says:

    Sir,
If debilitated moon has mars sitting in kendra from it and such mars gets exalted in navamsa, does it fully cancel moon’s debilitation? Or just partially only?

    Thank you so much.

    • VS says:

for neecha bhang, the neecha planet has to be in kendra from lagna and ideally also from moon
the owner of the rashi has to either sit in the own rashi, be exalted or aspect the rashi and debilitated planet fully

a planet which is not in kendra but bhang is only neecha bhang and not neecha bhang raj yoga

  79. Anand says:

    Respected Sir,
To find Pancha Mahapurusha yoga whether we should look from ASC or from Moon.

    Thank you,
    Anand

    • VS says:

      ascendant

howevever if any yoga, including pancha mahapurush from lagna repeats from moon also, then it is deemed much stronger in power

  80. narayan says:

    Dear VS,

For Capricorn rising, rahu, sun and mercury are conjunct in Swati, Libra. Can you please let know what to expect during the Sun MD and Mercury AD period.
    Warm regards, Narayan

  81. Rahul says:

    Sir
According to jaimini moon’s aspect on any yoga
Gives certainty to this yoga.what’s sort of yogas being referred here? Parashari or jaimini Or both

  82. Anup says:

    Hi VS,

For Capricon lagna(13d) if some1 has venus in 4th house of aries(29d) jupiter exalted in 7th house(5.5d) and exalted saturn(R) in 10th house (22d) would Venus give any good result since its in 29degress and since its rajayogakaraka planet for capricon lagna..thanks!

    • VS says:

the only generic answer i can give is that in the described case as venus- saturn strong yuti in opposition will be there within 8 degrees of each other, there is going to be a strong raj yoga as saturn and venus as functionally strong benefics for capricorn lagna and in the given placement, both are in kendra and strong

  83. Sunil says:

    Hi,

In a kundali For leo lagna Jupiter sits in 9th house of aries at 02.57 degree and mars sits in 5th house of saggitarus at 05 degrees would it cause any good yoga since lord of 5th and 9th house exchange house..jupiter is vargottam in navamsa but in chalit it moves to 8th house..will such a jupiter and mars give good results in its dasa and bukti..thank you..

  84. Promila says:

    Hi VS

Started reading your blog only recently and I must it is the best on the net, such clarity and help in clarifying the core concepts for other – god bless you!

I have a question on NBRY – suppose there is debilitated Mercury (shadbala of 6.57 in virupas) in Pisces 10th house for a Gemini Lagna and an exalted Jupiter (Shadbala of 8.81 in Virupas) in 2nd house cancer (Moon in 4th house)

Does this qualify as NBRY? From all the discussion above,
    1) points in favor of NBRY as I see is a) Mercury in Kendra from both Lagna and Moon, b) dispositor (Jupiter) strong and aspecting Mercury with its 9th aspect, c) 5-9 position between Mercury and Jupiter
    2) Points not in favor – dispositor though strong is NOT in kendra from lagna or moon

    So the questions are:
    A) does this qualify as NBRY?
    B) how much does the point number 2 above dampen the NBRY (dispositor though strong, but not in kendra to lagna or moon)?

Thanks a lot and god bless you for being a real guru to so many!

    • VS says:

it will be NBRY. there is no formula to calculate how much in most jyotish. one learns via case studies and over time intuition develops

  85. Vidya says:

Does Adhi yog form from Lagna or should it be considered only from Moon?
What benefits if it happens from Lagna?
    Thank you
    Vidya

  86. Promila says:

    Hi VS

    For parivartana yoga:
    1) do the planets act 100% of the times as it they are placed in their own sign or say 50% of the time they act as if they are placed where they are and 50% as if they are placed in their own sign? Which of these options is a better way of thinking about Parivartana yoga?
    2) you mentioned exchange between 1st and 6th lord is not good and causes miseries. So in the sample you gave where 1st lord mars and 6th mars mercury exchange houses – what kind of miseries can the person expect?
    3) do these miseries manifest more in the dasa – antar dasa of the two planets?

    Thanks
    Promila

    • VS says:

i can not give any percentages, nor can anyone else I believe. These things have to be learnt via years of experience and case studies. No short cuts unfortunately!

  87. Promila says:

    Hi VS

Can we apply Parivartana yoga to divisional charts (like Navamsa/Dasamsa) as well?

    Thanks
    Promila

  88. Rahul says:

    Sir
    Do u use kalchakra dasha?

    • VS says:

sparingly yes. it is very complicated to utilize

      • Rahul says:

        Sir
I think kalchakra dasha give more accurate outcomes than vimshotri as there are types of vimshotri . I recently came across PADNAVAMSA DASHA and found this to be very accurate but application of this dasha requires accurate birth details as this is based on NAVAMSHA CHART
. What is your experience of padnavamsha dasha?

        • VS says:

I have not researched padnavamsha dasa

there are hundreds of dasas, special dasas, rashi dasas and their modified versions liek traibhaagi for vimshottari.
while some can argue that they like x or y dasa, in reality the only dasa ALWAYS applicable and researched the most extensively and mentioned in every text is vimshottari and hence that can not be ignored or over ridden. The basic vimshottari of 120 years starting with moon is the main vimshottari and not from lagna sputa or any modified version of it. special dasas like chaturseeti when 10th lord is in 10th should also be considered. however in my experience, vimshottari and yogini are 2 main dasas to always keep in mind along with transit and applicable kaal (part of life) for any individual

  89. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

For panch mahapurush yoga, suppose the planet is retrograde, does it still apply? If yes, does it get stronger or weaker or no effects? Such as retro Jupiter In pisces in 4th?

    Thank you.

  90. Rahul says:

    Sir
A planet A is causing kendra -trikone rajyog by CONJUNCTION with planet B and same planet A IS CAUSING VIPAREET RAJYOG BY MUTUAL ASPECT WITH ANOTHER PLANET C. in this case vipareet rajyog should come out first?

    • VS says:

usually the mooltrikona sign effect will dominate. no hard and fast rule regarding which will come first and at times both can co-exist

  91. Gururaj says:

    Hi Vivek ,
If moon is along with benefic planet jupiter and Sun in 12th house for Sagi acendent , will the debiliation of moon be cancelled ? and how will the moon dasha be?

    • VS says:

debilitation of a planet is cancelled fully only if the planet is in kendra and is sitting with its depositor or is aspected fully by the depositor. also if the debilitated planet is with an exalted planet within 10 degrees on the same sign then too the debilitation is cancelled. otherwise, the debilitation is never fully cancelled

  92. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

I know someone who has two mahapurush yogas –
Jupiter exalted in cancer in 7th
Venus in own house (libra) in 10th

This person’s life is the worst (have nothing g going for them – no job/money/family, mental illnesses).

Only thing is jupiter and venus are both retrograde. Along with saturn (ascendant lord) with rahu in 8th.

I know you don’t read charts. But just wondering about your views on retrogration of planets when exalted/in own house. Do they act as debilitated and cause more harm than good? (Of course, in this case there are definitely other factors too).

    Thank you so much 🙏🙏

    • VS says:

Hi, any chart has to be seen in totality and hence impossible for me to speculate on a chart that i dont have. Anyways generally speaking, say if capricorn lagna as you are mentioning, saturn with rahu in 8th is a terrible combination in general as it is a shraapit yoga formed in a dusthana and highly inmical sign of the sun for lagna and 2nd lord saturn. jupiter exalted in itself can not provide yoga as its MK sign is 12th and hence even though it is neutral to a large extent, it being stronger than the lagna lord is not a good sign at all and might damage the house it sits in – 7th in this case. likewise I mean you have to see the chart overall. Planets that are functional benefics should ideally be strong and placed in kendra/ konas and functionally malefic planets should be weaker and placed away from bhaav madhya points (ideally)

      • Hemlata says:

Thank you Sir. Based on your response, can we consider following:

        1. Retrograde exalted planets are very strong and act benefic when owning good houses? Act worst when owning bad houses?
        2. Reverse is true for retrograde debilitated (they are weak?)?
        3. Also, in this case venus being a benefic (retrograde in own house) couldn’t do much because venus dasha will not start till native is 67. That benefic planets wouldn’t be of much use if their MD doesn’t come in time?

        Thank you🙏🙏

        • VS says:

as I have said, I can not comment on a chart till i see all its dynamics in detail and that unfortunately is not something I do here. Else I wont be able to see all of them even if I see them non stop 24 hours. thanks

  93. Binay says:

    Hi VS,

Was thinking of a unique combination of debilitated planet and NBRY.

Gemini lagna, mercury in Pisces (10th house) and its dispositor in 8th house Capricorn along with exalted Mars and swa-rashi Sa.

So effectively speaking both planet and it’s dispositor is debilitated but dispositor is getting it’s debilitation cancelled due to exalted Mars and Swa-rashi Sa.

From above can we infer that mercury also lost its debilitation just because Ju is no more debilitated? Leaving aside impact of other aspect just wanna get a grasp on this situation for now.

    Thanks,

    • VS says:

in general when a planet and its depositor are both debilitated, its not good. In the given scenario both the planets will remain debilitated to atleast some extent in phalit results

  94. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

If jupiter and venus are together in pisces in D1. In D9 if jupiter gets debiliated, venus stays in pisces, would jupiter debilitation affect venus (even though its exalted vargottam)?
Just would to know how much significant the depositor status is, if the planet itself is strongly placed.

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

since one is own house and one exlated, they will further enhance each others strengths
however since they are also inmical to each other, amidst the beneficial effects can always be some friction or health issues but nothing major by itself. purely jupiter in capricorn in D9 will not impact venus. it shows that both are within 10 degrees in D1 which is a relatively tight conjunction

      • Abhishek Pande says:

Allow me to chime in here please as the question is interesting, however, firstly, the question has to be asked in the context of which ascendant. Also, leaving the D9 nuance aside for a bit, its interesting that two natural benefics but natural enemies conjunct in the same bhav and therefore become maha shatru so what will be the effects?). My two cents below:
        – Generically, as VS said, they will enhance each other’s strengths as they appear to be in good dignity, plus again depending on the lagna, they will also enhance the characteristics of their respective bhav lordships (and significations of the planets they are depositing will also flourish (in good or bad way depending on functional nature of deposited planet)
        – Taking Aries ascendant lets say, this tight conjunction will happen in the 12th bhav. Falling in pieces, there is high likelihood that such person will be highly intuitive and intelligent in spiritual matters and may also be bit indifferent to the material aspects of the world. Due to inflated ego, there is a possibility of relationship issues (7th lord exalted conjunct jupiter will give quality but being in 12th and watery sign, and being venus (highly intelligent, but daitya in nature) may cause a lot of ego and inflexibility in relationship matters)
        – Taurus ascendant, excellent placement of two natural benefics and dhan & samriddhi karakas falling in 11th so will give lot of wealth and luxuries with some initial struggles (guru here becomes 8th lord / saggi MK).
        – and so on and so forth for other lagnas, this ofcourse depends on several other factors as VS as repeatedly stated nothing can be generalized by looking at things piecemeal

  95. Indu says:

    Hi VS,

Can yoga’s happen across the rashi’s if the planets get into same house in the bhav chalit? Say Ju is 27 Virgo and Mercury 8 in Venus, and bhav Madya is 29 degrees. Can Yoga happen between Ju & Me?

    • VS says:

      Hi

conjunction yogas technically happen when 2 planets are within 15 degrees of each other, ideally within 12 degrees of each other
if 2 planets are in the same sign but say 20 degrees apart, there is theoretical conjunction but the effect will be weak (not zero) though
likewise if 2 planets are within 8 degrees of each other but in different signs, there will be conjunction but the impact will be reduced due to different depositors (signs)

  96. Karthik says:

    Hello VS,

Does parivartan yoga become weak if both the planets are in rashi sandhi?

  97. hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

Would you classify this as VRY: Saturn in 3rd (scorpio), mars in 6th(aquarius) for virgo ascendant? Since both are malefic for this ascendant, does their exchange and placement in malefic houses cause VRY?

    Thank you

    Hello VS:
When lord of 4/9 and 5/10 form a rajyoga, is it lesser than a 7/9 or 9/10 yoga due to the 6/8 relationship?

    Hello VS:
When Mars is neech, is NBRY stronger when Moon sits in kendra from lagna or in a kendra from Mars?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

Ideally it should be in Kendra (from bhaav perspective) from both lagna and moon. I tend to give more importance to lagna when looking at any NBRY just from personal experience

      • Sundar says:

So the dispositor sitting in a kendra from the neech planet is not of value for just NB let alone NBRY..? Thx VS

        • VS says:

I didn’t say it’s not important just that the Kendra position is a bit more important.

For NBRY the larger the number of factors, the better the cancelation and NBRY

    Hello VS

Have a query with regards to gaja kesari yoga…

For a virgo native if moon and jupiter(Retro) within 10degrees are conjunct together in 6th house of aquarius would it be considered as gaja kesari yoga..since it is happening in 6th house which is a dustana house and jupiter is retro as well..can one expect any good results from such a yoga

    • VS says:

moon and jupiter together is gajakesari yoga by definition. Whether the functional results will be good or not depends on the houses ruled by these 2 planets and bhaav where this yoga sits, what other planets aspect them and the strength of the depositor etc. So there is no one size fits all answer

    Namaste Sir,

If 6th,8th & 12th lords are sitting together in 6th house (sun 4.28*, Mercury 10.49* & Jupiter 19.37*) of a Capricorn ascendant will it make vipreet rajyog? Also interestingly Saturn (2.37*) & Mars (9.31*) are sitting together in 8th house of this chart (2L & 11L conjunction). Moon being in 11th house (17.59*) also makes this 2L & 11L conjunction in 8th house of Moon Chart. other planets Venus (10.28*) in 7th & Rahu (8*) in 9th house.
Is the Dhan yog (2L & 11L) conjunction strong in this chart? pls provide your insights.

    Dhanyawad,
    anurag

hello Anurag, I do not provide personal readings unfortunately.
Generally speaking the 6,8 and 12 lords together in a house do give vipreet rajyoga yes

    hi sir, amazin content!!

I am an aries ascendant and my mars and venus are conjunct in 3rd house and saturn the lord of 10th house is aspecting them from the lagna (1st house). Is it a rajyoga

    • VS says:

thanks for the good words. this given condition will give some yoga due to multiple kendra lords aspecting each other. however if jupiter aspects them from the 7th or 9th house, especially 9th as it is jupiters own sign for Aries lagna, in that case the raj yoga will be more intense
