Conditional Dasa Systems

Conditional Dasas (Nakshatra Dasa Category)

As I mentioned in Analyzing Basics – Dasas (I), Vimshottari is a dasa which is applicable to all. (except perhaps the very old, the very young or mentally challenged where the mental faculties are very poor as signified by Moon)

Certain dasa systems are applicable when certain criteria is met ONLY. An important point to note here is that the great sage Parasara (father of Jyotish) established that when more than 1 dasas are applicable in a horoscope, the ‘Rarer’ one should be given prime importance.

So as a default take Vimshottari to be applicable to everyone (100%) or atleast >90% of individuals

Now lets take an example of Chaturseeti Sama dasa. This dasa is applicable ONLY if 10th lord is in the 10th house of the horoscope. Statistically speaking, 1/12th of people will have 10th lord in the 10th house. This implies 100 x 1/12 or 8.34% of people.

Now it is clear that 8.34% is much more rare than more than 90% of people. hence in this case, give Chaturseeti Sama dasa more importance than Vimshottari. BUT keep in mind Vimshottari is always applicable and hence can not be ignored!

I explained how Vimshottari is calculated in the last writeup. I will not be explaining the mathematics behind the special dasas I mention here due to the fact that each has a detailed logic which requires a lot of analysis. At this stage this is not required for the reader. Good news is that JHora will give you all these dasas, if you need them and the need for manual calculation does not arise

Underlying theme for all planetary dasas remains the same. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd level planetary periods are important to analyze carefully along with transits to dictate events during any given time for the native.

I give some important conditional dasa systems below for the knowledge of the reader-

(1) Chaturseeti Sama Dasa as I already mentioned is applicable when 10th lord is in the 10th house (Rarity = 8.34% of population)

(2)Dwi-Saptati Sama Dasa – Applicable when Lagna lord is in the 7th house OR 7th lord is in the Lagna (Rarity = 16.68% of population)

(3) Shat-Trimsa Sama Dasa – Applicable when birth is daytime in Sun’s Hora or at night time in Moon’s Hora. Hora = hour lord or the planet that rules the hour of birth. This is seen as an output on front page of JHora. (Rarity = 11.11% of population)

(4) Dwadasottari Dasa – If Lagna is in Venusian Amsa. Amsa can be many kinds. So the definition will change as per the reader hence a bit controversial. I take Navamsa as the meaning. (Rarity = 16.67% of population)

(5) Sataabdika Dasa – If Lagna is Virgottam. Meaning the same sign rising in the ascendant and the Navamsa. (Rarity = 11.11% of population)

(6) Panchottari Dasa – If langa has Cancer in D1 and Cancer is rising in D12 divisional chart as well. (Rarity <1% of population)

(7) Shashti- Hayani Dasa – If Sun is in the Lagna. (This does sound a bit vague but nonetheless can be a good research topic. I have not yet correlated this dasa with many case studies) (Rarity = 8.34% of population)

As you notice when any of these dasas are applicable in a chart, they will be more ‘Rare’ than Vimshottari. But importantly 2 of these might be applicable example a chart can have Sun in lagna and 10th lord in 10th. In this case 3 dasas are applicable – Vimshottari, Shashti – Hayani & Chaturseeti Sama dasa

Now in the above bullets, you will notice that out of these Shashti Hayani and Chaturseeti sama dasa are applicable in 8.34% of the people. So what should the astrologer do?

Typically see if Sun is stronger than the 10th lord sitting in 10th in terms of shadbala, dignities and other factors we have already learnt in some of the lessons before. It becomes a judgement call. The Stronger one will have the prominent dasa.
That said, in reality all will operate to some extent. Meaning all the 3 above as Vimshottari is always applicable.

Point is not to overwhelm the astrologer, but to help support or negate events that she sees in one dasa in another dasa system.

An important Observation here for the reader is that many of these conditional dasa systems DO NOT recognize Rahu/ Ketu in the planetary periods. The underlying cause is that these dasas are giving prominence to something Other than the Moon (from which Vimshottari is calculated). Rahu/ Ketu are the Nodes of the Moon and act on a subconscious level as strong Karmic forces from previous lives. Their applicability is more from a Lunar perspective than otherwise and hence the absence of these periods in some of the Conditional dasas.

thanks VS — I have been going through PVR lessons and stumbled upon this; very good job writing this up.

He notes in his lessons where more than one conditional dasa applies, use the one which has the longest total length in years. So in your above example that would be Chaturseeti Sama dasa (72 years) > Shashti – Hayani (54 years).

In my experience, I have had several charts where more than 1 conditional dasa applied, and I found I did tend to check all of them, and in some cases VD was more accurate, and in others one particular conditional was more accurate, although it was not necessarily the longest.

Thanks Prasad for the good words.

You are right that the best way to learn is experimenting and testing one’s theory and hence the key word is experience

It is a well known fact in astrology that if more than one indicators (dasas) point to similar event(s), the probability of such an event to precipitate goes sky high

      Best,
      Vivek

    Sri VS:
For a Lagna virgottam (D1, D9), how do I read the Sataabdika Dasa?
In Vimsh- the person is running Rahu Dasa, in Sataab- it is Sun dasa.

    • VS says:

Special dasas have to always read in tandem with vimshottari
its a highly advanced topic in vedic astrology and i do not recommend it for beginners, even medium to high level astrologers as the likelihood is, they will end up in getting confused and frustrated

I have found vimsottari dasa gives fairly good results when the birth-time is correct. this can be checked especially in dasas of mars(kuja) which tends to give good or bad effects immediately after the beginning of mars dasa. for example if mars is in your 8th lords star and also in the sub of a 8th house significator you may fall prey to an accident or robbed’

    • VS says:

Yes Vimshottari is always applicable, especially if moon is well placed
as for KP system of astrology, Lal Kitab, etc recent local schools of thought, they have some good nuggets here or there, but the lord sub lord etc is nothing but a cult following of incomplete and irrational rules one or a bunch of people pulled out of their hat

apart from Vimsottari dasa I have tried forecasting using yogini dasa for over several decades and found V.D applicable for almost everyone. Since of late I have started applying Jaiminis Chara Dasa on an experimental basis and the advantage there is it also appears to give a general trend of events even when the birth time is approximate. In using the Chara Dasa one should apply it combined with the seven karakas mentioned in Jaimini Sutras.

Should these Dashas be applied on each Divisional Chart separately?

  7. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
What is the general indication if Cancer Lagna (and Rasi) is virgottam in D-9 (Moon in Saggi) and D-12 (Moon is Taurus with 7th lord)?

    • VS says:

too hard to generalize anything like this
mathematically speaking if lagna is virgottam cancer meaning in first 3.3 degrees of cancer and moon in saggi in D9 then it means that moon is technically in 2nd bhaav most likely as it is more than 15 degrees away from rising degree and hence changes bhaav in chalit

      • Sundar says:

Got it VS. I was just thinking about the D-12 virgottam and any special significance to that. Btw, if it is not a chara rasi, would you able to quickly find out the Moon’s Chalit position as above?

    Hi VS,

What’s your take on Ashtottari dasa? It seems to be widely used after VD and also has mention in BHPS.

    Thanks,
    Mrugesh

    • VS says:

I dont utilize it much. It is advised to utilize it for longevity purposes. I dont recommend diving much into it without a detailed knowledge of astrology

  9. Abhishek Pande says:

    Hello Vivek,

My question is related to Vimshottari starting from moon star vs lagna sputha. My understanding is that if there are more grahas placed in Kendra from lagna compared to moon, apply the dasha starting point from lagna. Backtested this model with mine & few other charts for which this condition holds good, I was able to predict certain events in those charts pretty closely.
Wanted to check with you if I am thinking about this correctly through below two questions:
    1. Can I apply above principle when constructing navtara chakra too? For example, if lagna star is stronger than moon star, lagna star becomes the birth star and janma, sampat, vipat etc. would then be determined starting from lagna star instead of moon star?
    2. In question 1, I mentioned “stronger than”.. what should I use to determine strength of a bhaava when comparing lagna or bhaav where moon is placed? a) # of planets placed in bhaava? b) # of planets placed in kendra from it? c) shadbal of bhaava lord? or something else?

Would be great if you could clear this confusion. Thanks.

    Regards,
    Abhishek

some of your queries are research oriented, you can learn your own answers by doing exactly what you are doing – more case studies

in my opinion vimshottari definition has a meaning only from moon as it is defined in such a manner, otherwise there are hundreds of dasa systems. lagna sputa started vimshottari is, atleast by definition, not vimshottari anymore

      • Abhishek says:

Thanks for your reply. I also recall from one of the discussions earlier here that rashi needs to be given more priority and then nakshatra comes. So in a way, navtara chakra etc. are definitely important tools, but rashi has to be seen first. Thanks again.

    Hi VS,

    Great article, as usual!

Are the planets’ house position ascertained from the rasi chart or the chalit bhava chart when determining the applicability of a conditional dasa?

For instance, you mentioned “Chaturseeti Sama Dasa as I already mentioned is applicable when 10th lord is in the 10th house”

If the 10th lord is in the 10th rasi but in the 11th house in the chalit chart does this conditional dasa still apply?

    Thanks!

    • VS says:

yes the conditional dasa still applies in this situation

      • Leo says:

Thank you so much, VS! Would it be unusual if Vimshottari dasa correlates to events much better than an applicable conditional dasa? Or, could it be an indication that the birth time needs to be rectified?

        • VS says:

its a good question. My take is that Vimshottari dasa is always relevant for any (mentally developed person). for very young children, incapaciated people (mentally) or those with some serious mind issues, moon is less significant/ blocked in energy and hence vimshottari becomes less relevant
