Bhaav Aspects – A complete Picture

Aspects of planets form an integral and highly important part of Jyotish. The reader would be aware of the 1st and 7th aspects of the planets and the special ‘full’ aspects of Mars on 4th, 8th houses, Saturn on 3rd and 10th houses and Jupiter on 5th and 9th houses.

I consider Rahu & Ketu to have a 5th and 9th aspect but ONLY on the trinal Nakshatra in which they reside in and not the entire sign, however, it is to be noted that this is disputed and some astrologers do not consider the aspects of nodes at all. The reader can make their own judgement, in my experience, they aspect the houses 5th and 9th to them but mostly in the depositing nakshatra of that bhaav only. Some astrologers, inclusive of JHora’s author, treat Ketu as Mars and hence aspects of Ketu as 4th and 8th to its position as well.

However in addition to this are partial aspects which are also to be seen. Partial aspects consist of each planet aspecting the sign 4th and 8th to it with a ¾ of an aspect and a sign 10th from it with a 1/4th aspect. Further, each planet aspects the 5th and 9th signs from it with a ½ aspect (Except Jupiter which aspects these signs with a 100% aspect). Lastly each planet aspects a sign 3rd from it by a 1/3rd aspect except Saturn which of course aspects the sign 3rd from it with a 100% aspect.

Two other things are to be kept in mind-

  • The degree of the planets and the Bhaav Madhya of each house is important as the aspects are full on the exact degree and get more diffuse with each passing degree from that point
  • When analyzing the effects of a planet on a sign, the COMPOUND relation of the planet with the owner of the sign has to be noted. Compound relation is the combination of permanent and temporary friendships and has already been discussed in detail in the ‘Dignity of Planets’ article

Finally for each bhaav, I advise adding up the Positive, Neutral and Negative aspects (again this is from compound relationship plus taking into consideration the functional nature of the planet with the lagna lord). This can be calculated and tabulated as the example below.

Note- you can right click over a chart (D1 in this case) and select “Aspect Table with Relationships”. However don’t forget to put a 100 in a manual table you make for a planet that is in a bhaav. Technically when a planet is in a bhaav, its effect on that bhaav is ‘Full’ but by default most softwares only look at aspects and hence tend to ignore the planet actually placed in the bhaav in their calculation.

Few important noteworthy points-

  • This is a highly useful tool giving a quick breakup of the kind of aspects each bhaav has in a horoscope
  • Horoscope should also be checked from the Moon and Arudha Lagna (AL) for a complete analysis
  • The more aspects a Bhaav has, the more prominent its results in an individual’s life
  • Bhaavs that have low aspects (both negative and positive) will tend to not manifest much in the individual’s lifetime
  • The more the positive and Neutral aspect on a bhaav, more easily will its results manifest
  • If the Negative aspects are much higher in proportion, it indicates a damage to the given bhaav and its significations and at the very minimum lots of delays/ obstacles/ problems with that bhaav
  • In addition to looking at the aspects as described above, look at the dignity, shadbala and placement of the owner of the bhaav. Even if the bhaav has negative aspects, but the owner is strong and well situated, the native will overcome the deficiencies of the bhaav with time. If the owner in such a situation is weak and low dignity as well, complete destruction of the bhaav and its significations is highly likely which will be triggered by transit of Saturn over the bhaav or its owner and/ or dasa of the owner/ planets in the bhaav
  • Malefic aspects on 3rd and 11th bhaavs are not very negative as these are Upaachya bhaavs (improve over time) and since malefics aspects on these bhaavs can still give courage and income respectively. However it can be negative for youngers and elder siblings of the native if too much negative aspectual strength falls on the 3rd or the 11th bhaavs.

Example for the horo (Sep 18, 1981 @ 1612 HRS in Chandigarh, India)-
Bhaav Aspects Table

Bhaav aspects chart

In this case it is noted that 6th and 8th bhaavs have low overall aspects (<300) and so will manifest to a limited extent in this native’s life. Also note how the 3rd bhaav has a low positive aspect and a relatively higher negative and neutral aspect. This will ensure courage/ effort in the individual but deny younger siblings to the native (and if younger siblings are there, they will have major personal or professionals issues in life to contend with)

    Hi Vivek

Nice article. I could Follow everything upto the sum total and the graphs….I couldnt follow mean, +465 – 158. What is that for?. I am applying this to my chart

  2. VS says:

    Hi Milred

    Thanks for the good word
the 465 is the summation of all the +ve aspects which are summed up in the green, -158 the sum of all negative aspects which show up in red and the rest in Grey is Neutral.which are all plotted stacked on top of each other as shown

Idea is to demarcate these as per the compound relation of the aspecting planet to the lord of the house of the aspected house. JHora will give you the colors as well. I modify them slightly as per the friendship (or lack thereof) towards lagna lord. Meaning in this example horo, Jupiter’s aspect on lagna might be taken as slightly negative. However since Jupiter considers saturn as neutral and is relatively neutral owning 12th, I will take it as neutral or slightly positive as Jup is a natural benefic and so on and so forth

Hence the +ve and -ve part will include some subjectivity in addition to the compound relationship

    Thanks, VS

  3. Milred says:

Lets take saturn’s aspect on the third house. Lord of the third house is jupiter which is enemy of saturn(who is also the lagna lord) in compound relationship. Hence red. Got it :). Took some time to figure out though. Thanks. Interesting. Its a lot of work.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to grasp a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you just can do with a few percent to pressure the message home a little bit, however instead of that, that is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I will definitely be back.

  5. Pinky says:

    Hi VS,
Could you please clarify Rahu and Ketu’s 5th and 9th aspects? This part confuses me “they aspect the houses 5th and 9th to them but mostly in the depositing nakshatra of that bhaav only”.

    • VS says:

      Pinky-

Rahu & ketu will aspect planets in same nakshatra as them. So as an example Rahu currently is in Virgo sign and Moon’s nakshatra. Thus is will aspect any planet in virgo and also in Capricorn (in Sravana Nakshatra) and in Taurus (in Rohini Nakshatra) as the Sravana and Rohini are ruled by Moon

  6. Vandana Tummala says:

I dont know where to post this. I saw my chart using web-based software. It shows my Hora lagna (HL) to be in my main lagna itself. Jupiter is based there too, he is lord of my house 9. I am a cancer ascentant and the lord of my Lagna is Moon in house 11, being in Taurus sign. Sun is in Leo house 2, his own house with Mercury and Venus.

Not sure what it means, the website doesn’t show anything much except the charts and some other data i am not so sure of. I will read your articles to see how to interpret the Hora Lagna.

  7. Sundar says:

    Sir,
Does the quality (good, bad, neutral) of the aspect depend on the nature of it alone? Or, does it depend on other considerations? Like..What if a natural benefic like Jupiter is a functional malefic? And if Jupiter sits in a shatru graha?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

      Sundar-

You have to look at both general and functional characterisctics
For example if for Libra ascendant, Saturn is well placed and aspecting jupiter fully, then in the dasa of jupiter good results will accrue due to the good functional aspect of saturn BUT in a context of general characteristics of Jupiter

      hope that helps

  8. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
In a female’s chart if Jupiter is sitting in the 7th house (Leo), has good Vimsopaka bala, does that positioning have any significance?

    • VS says:

you have to see all other planets, yogas etc
generally a strong jupiter in 7th can give a good partner/ marriage, unless it is its own house which causes bhaavo karak naashe

      • Sundar says:

        Sri VS:
Jupiter is not a karaka of the 7th house, isn’t it? You are also bringing Jupiter’s own house into the equation for “bhaavo karak naashe”. Can you kindly elaborate?

  9. Rkparmar says:

Jupiter in libra sign in makar lagna…n in bhav 10th house…..should it effect marraige life

  10. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
A quick question on Argala (planets in the 2nd, 4th and 11th from a Bhaav or a planet having an influence on the bhaav or the ability of the planet to do its job…please correct me if I am wrong on the understanding of this subject). How much influence does this have on the house/planet when compared to Graha dhristi or Rasi Dhrishti?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

Yes argala and virodha argala are advanced topics. Predominantly study and master grah drishtis first and foremost

Rashi drishtis and argalas are less important in the grand scheme of things. focusing on them early on will just confuse a student in my opinion

  11. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
With Rahu + Sun posited in the 10th in Taurus in the natal chart..Rahu transiting in Leo asc..are there potentially serious bad effects ( other than bombastic talk, inflated ego etc)? Can there be sudden tragic events for example?

    • VS says:

Not enough to say. all other planets, dignities and yogas will dictate
Trump has this combination right now. but that isnt enough to say what exactly will happen

  12. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Are aspects relevant in D-9 and other divs?

    • VS says:

not fully. for example if 2 planets in conjunction in navamsa…the planets will have a sambandha with each other in D1 too. but not like a real conjunction. more like a finer shade of that.

  13. r pristine says:

Sir: for mithun lagna(of male),can shukra in 7th house be bad -having “karak bhave dosh” despite being functional benefic too?? kindly explain. regards.

    • VS says:

no by itself it will be good in 7th for gemini and cause no bhavo karak nashe
that applies when a planet sits in its own house not a sign of another planet

  14. r pristine says:

sir: thank you for clarification. similarly, for mithun lagna(male or female)-if guru with “kendradhipati dosh”has 5th aspect on dhanu, will it be good or bad in marriage? kindly explain. regards.

  15. r pristine says:

sir: a related doubt. guru/or budh having kendradhipati dosh, if aspecting lagna/it’s lord or placed in lagna- can ginve health/longevity problem,(assuming no other good factors)?? generally,in what respect such planet to be deemed adverse? pl clarify. regards.

  16. NARESH says:

    generic question?:

for prediction regarding aspects and yogas, bhava predictions whether we have to consider D1chart or Bhava chalit or both

    • VS says:

it is very simple to understand. the rasi chart shows what the planet feels like. so if moon in 5th rashi exalted but moving back into 4th house in chalit chart, then moon will be exalted by nature and power but giving effects of the 4-10 axis. in this case it will still represent the 7th house regardless of wherever it sits. so if any planet sitting close to it, then its a conjunction of that planet with the 7th house planet. etc

      • NARESH says:

Sir, first thanks for giving reply and god give you everything you want to make you happy so that you also give happiness to others by sharing divine knowledge

can i conclude with your information that gor Planetary aspects and yogas we have to consider D1 chart and for bhava predictions we have to analyse BHAVA chalit chart.if my conclusion was wrong please explain

        yours true follower

        naresh

  17. Baskar says:

Sorry for bumping up this question VS ji.

This is about the environment of the aspecting planet. If it is in a friendly environment, will it be mellowed to certain extent even though the aspected planet is its arch rival?

Examples may be like Mars aspecting Saturn ( or ) Mercury aspecting Mars ( or ) Sun aspecting Saturn.. case 1 from a friendly sign .. case 2 from a distressed situation via placement or dignity.

Thanks much for your guidance again!

    • VS says:

for aspect the strength of aspect depends on how strong the aspecting planet is…and secondly on degrees of closeness of aspect…every exalted planet has a strong aspect…and is aspecting the house of its fall…so the aspect doesn’t become weak..but strong

  18. Sundar says:

For example, for an Aqua asc, Rahu is in 11th bhaav and aspected By Jupiter from 7th. In Calit, Rahu moves into 10th? Is Jupiter influencing Rahu during Rahu’s MD? This question is another way around the above I have asked. Can you add a comment on the Rahu dasa ?

    • VS says:

doesn’t matter what bhaav etc. Look at degree of Jupiter. exact 120 from it is the max impact of drishti. is Rahu within 8 to 10 degrees of that point? if no then Jupiter’s impact in minimal to none (>13 degrees)

  19. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
What is the effect of a mutual aspect of Kendra and Trine lords when they are enemies? example for Aqua asc, Saturn in Capri and Sun in Cancer..is the raja yoga almost nullified?

  20. gil says:

    Hi VS,

You repport the data from JHORA screen in a spreadsheet to have this ?
I don’t have this right cliking on D1 and choosin “Aspect Table with Relationships”.

    Sincerely

  21. Sundar says:

VS, can the aspect of a natural benefic like Jupiter be a malefic aspect? Example, Jupiter’s aspect on Gemini. If true, is the effect really malefic or neutral?

    • VS says:

Good and bad co-exist in astrology – very much as in life
astrology is not binary as in 0 or 1, good or bad
if Jupiter is a functional malefic, its aspect will be bad, however there will be some grace due to its generic nature as a benefic. Likewise if Saturn is a well placed yoga karaka, its aspects will only benefit the bhaavs, but not without some delay and struggle in the areas that it aspects. Also how much damage or benefit will depend on the owner of the bhaav. If the owner of the bhaav is strong, it will overcome problems easily and vice versa

  22. Sundar says:

VS, How important is argala’s (and Virodargala’s) influence on a house/planet? Is it as/more important than graha dhrishti? If a bhaav is strong in terms of aspects and the lord’s dignity, can papargala still have a decisive role?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

Argala is an important concept but it is an advanced concept and should not be dabbled with till the astrology knowledge is very robust as otherwise it tends to give wrong interpretations

  23. UDAYA BHASKAR says:

    VIVEK JI

    EXCELLENT ANALYSES OF ASPECTS .

I COULD NOT GET THE CLUE HOW TO VIEW THE TABLE ESPECIALLY THE ” ZERO ” POINT IN A HOUSE .

i REQUEST PL CONTINUE TO THROUGH LIGHT ELABORATELY ON THE SUB. FOR PRECISE PREDICTION
    THANKING YOU

  24. Sundar says:

    VS,
Quoting: “When analyzing the effects of a planet on a sign, the COMPOUND relation of the planet with the owner of the sign has to be noted”.
Can Jupiter’s aspect on Gemini be bad (or even aadhi-shatru) since Jupiter considers Merc an enemy?

    • VS says:

aspect has nothing to do with the compound relation. compound relation means how well or not the over planet situation is with another planet
also u still can not apply it verbatim. have to use logic. say virgo ascendant. if both mercury and jupiter in lagna. now one is deeply exalted, bhadra mahapurush yoga. other rules 2 kendras and both have full directional strength. now all 4 kendra lords combining in kendra with full directional strength and their depositor mercury itself is exalted in a mahapurush yoga. do you think it matters here that jupiter and mercury are inmical? they are both generic benefics by nature. If venus joins them or saturn joins them as 9 or 5th lords, this is a powerful raj yoga. however some negativity will come out in the context of strain or stress on the mind due to over study or over analysis in life. some nervous or anxiety issues are possible as well as some experimentation in romantic relationships in general. but mostly for career, finances, education, assets and wealth it will be great

  25. Sundar says:

Vivek, if lagna is at 12 degrees, Planet P1 in Aries at 29 degrees, P2 in Taurus at 2 degrees. Is there a conjunction?

  26. vidya says:

    Hi VS-ji,

In jHora -What are the setting to be used for Bhav chalit – Lagna in middle of 1st house?
Also do should we use Sripathi or Equal houses(30 deg each) for the house degrees?
    Please let know.

    Thanks
    Vidya

    • VS says:

there are options as different astrologers and different schools of thought use different methodologies.
I personally use equal house system with lagna in the middle of the 1st house. thanks

  27. Sundar says:

    Vivek,
Is there a sutra to the effect that two exalted planets opposite each other can have a -ve effect? Mars/Jupiter for example?

    • VS says:

it only occurs if they are opposite in nature like sun – Saturn. logically only one of them will be a functional benefic and the other a malefic for the lagna and hence 2 opposing strong forces will create issues. if cancer ascendant and exalted Jupiter and mars both oppose each other, its great…especially if none is retrograde. if sun is midway say in aries…making it also exalted in 10th…then both mars and Jupiter can be direct and exalted and this is a strong raj yoga

      • Sundar says:

For a Libra asc, Jupiter lord of 3 and 6. Does the exaltation make the F-Maleficity worse? Or does it affect the 10th adversely?

        Thank you.

        • VS says:

if moon is strong, an exalted jupiter can give rise and fame through self effot. If moon is weak and afflicted, then only via hard work and struggle, some success will come in career. 3rd MK sign isnt as bad, its a partial dusthana, though overall jupiter isnt great for the lagna.

          • baskar says:

            Very nice explanation VS ji..

I understand that Even a functional malefic can give very good results if placed well and in good dignity ..

Thank you Sundar ji for asking this question.

          • baskar says:

If such a partial functional malefic owning MK in 3rd house, also becomes a “Yogi” or “Sahayogi” planet, will all of its negativity go away and try to do only good to th native?

            Kindly let me know.

            Thanks much in advance .

          • VS says:

No these are finer concepts that cant dominate main rules of maleficity for any planet

          • baskar says:

            Understood VS ji..Thanks much.

          • Raj says:

            Dear Vs,

What if such a moon is placed in 12th house of saggitarus conjunct rahu(aspect from mercury, mars and ketu in 6th house)..have seen a kindali(jupiter exalted in 7th house)with this combination and he had amazing moon md..he is a multi-millionaire with various business

          • VS says:

cant comment without the actual horoscope. most likely sounds like the correct lagna might have been saggitarius

  28. BR says:

If Saturn is the lagna and moon rasi lord i.e. it’s doubly benefic, then are its aspects good? Assuming a placement in kendra/trikona with enough Shadbala. In other words, Saturn is as benefic as it can be in a horoscope. Then, are its aspects still cruel and delay-causing? See the example below…

For example, take Capricorn or Aquarius ascendant with moon in first house which makes Saturn both lagna and rasi lord. Then, let’s assume that Saturn is in some kendra or trikona house e.g. (say) 10th house. Then would it’s 10th aspect on the 7th house be good?

It seems tricky to me as in both cases Moon/Sun are the lords of 7th house which are -ve planets for Capricorn/Aquarius. Would Saturn’s aspect delay marriage or create other problems? Any thoughts?

It’s seventh aspect on 4th house seems more positive to me as the 4th house will be owned by friends Mercury or Venus respectively for Cap. and Aquar.

    • VS says:

when Saturn is a functional benefic, its aspects will do good but also give the generic delay and obstruction if no general benefic aspects the given house. also Saturn when exalted, own house or friend’s house will be happy and hence its aspects are more productive than when it sits in one of the signs of Aries, Cancer, Leo or Scorpio as here Saturn becomes agitated being in enmical signs

  29. Vishwajit says:

    Dear Sir,
For a Capricorn ascendent Jupiter occupies 5th house of Taurus. Can transit of Jupiter to cancer Virgo or Scorpio give positive results.

    Regards, Vh

  30. Sundar says:

    Vivek,
For a libra asc, does Moon in the 4th (Yogakkara’s house) cause relationship issues with mother due to Karaka Bhaav Naash? Dispositor yogakkara Shani is in the 3rd but with Mars. Does this exacerbate the issue if any?

    • VS says:

no bhaav naash unless moon is conjunct/ trinal or aspected by malefics like Rahu and ketu

mars and Saturn in 3rd by themselves can give a courageous, bold and confrontational person in nature, but nothing directly related to mother in that scenario

  31. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
In the example table of aspects you have given, I see Jupiter with a 100% red on
    the 9th. I have 3 related questions:
    1. Is this possible for example where Jupiter is aspecting Libra /Taurus?
    2. Would this also hold good during Jupiter’s transit in Libra (if above is true)?
    3. If Moon was sitting in Libra, how would that impact Jupiter’s aspect on Moon?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

The Red and the Green and Grey depend on the compound relationship, so dont worry too much about them as softwares dont analyze as humans. dont take astrology too mathematically early on as one tends to then think of planets as just shadbals or this or that as a number. In practice getting the basics is more important. after some intuition develops with practice, then it is advised to go deeper into Ganit (mathematical) jyotish

  32. Vidya says:

    Dear VS,
When D1 and bhava-chalit placements are different, will the planet ultimately give the results of the D1 house placements?
Eg: Exalted Jupiter in 9th in D1 and going to 8th in bhav. Jupiter’s results here would be of 8th bhav but as exalted state in 8th bhav. Can it give the results of 9th house after some point in its dasha?
    Thanks.

  33. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
When a transitting planet aspects a natal/transitting planet 100% (special or regular) at exactly the same degrees, is the effect less than if the planet was transitting over the planet itself given the degree of separation? Which would mean that Mars’ 4th aspect would be stronger the 7th..

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

aspects on natal planets are more pertinent for prediction than on other transiting planets.
a full aspect remains full, 4th or 7th is irrelevant

      • Sundar says:

Thanks VS. Transitting over the natal planet (which becomes almost like a conjunction between the natal and the transitting)..does it have more power than the 7th or special aspect aspect?

  34. Aditya says:

    Dear VS,

If 6-8-12 houses are empty, what does it it signify.

    Regards, ad

  35. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

If natural Benefics become functional malefic for the chart, how do we ascertain the effects of their aspects on other planets? Do they remain benefic aspect ( or ) gets altered to have malefic aspect on the aspected planet?

  36. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
Looking at DJT’s chart, Mars is transitting in Capricorn and aspects Saturn in Cancer (12th) . I have 3 questions:
    1. Does Saturn get less/not agitated due to Mars being a Yogakara
    2. Since Natal moon is 8th from Mars MK and Moon is 4th from Mars, Moons becomes adhi-mitra to Mars natally. Is transit Mars’s aspect on Cancer an adhi-mitra aspect?
    3. Should I look at transit Mar’s aspect on Cancer and the natal saturn collectively?

    Thank you

    • VS says:

Individually all planets move around all the time for everyone

Hence more important is the actual yogas and their strengths in a chart. Second is dasa and finally transits of heavy weights. I.e. saturn, Jupiter and the nodes

  37. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

How do we analyze the qualitative effects of “aspect by Mars” if placed well in Sun’s house or any of its own house and at the same time Mars either conjoined or aspected by strong Jupiter?

Will the Mars aspect be beneficial or neutral at the most?

    • VS says:

a planet in happy dignity like own sign or exalted or friend sign will carry good tidings in its aspect. also both functional and generic nature come into play in aspects and one has to see both and not just one

  38. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For a Makara lagna with Rahu in the 3rd with sitting close to Sun, Guru in Kanya closely aspecting Rahu…I am trying to relate this to Guru transitting close to natal Rahu and activating its maleficity; isn’t this an analogous natal position except that Guru is looking at his own house but that does not mean he can reduce the maleficity of Rahu, for if that were true, that would happen in Guru’s transit over Rahu. Kindly opine.

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

transit can never supercede natal chart and yogas….Jupiter will activate rahu and whatever its promise is in the chart, will show up

  39. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
When a planet sits in the n-th rasi but in the n-1 bhaav, and lord of the rasi sitting in own rasi, the planet will give the effects of both the n and n-1 bhaav. I have 2 questions:
    1. Is this because the rasi lord has provided poshak for the planet and the planet has attachment to the n-th rasi? Funny/foolish question perhaps but want to know the principle behind that.
    2. If the rasi lord is aspecting the rasi 100% but not actually posited there, would the planet still give the effects of both bhaavs?

    • VS says:

when a planet sits in any rashi, during its dasha it will not only give the effects of its location (bhaav) but also the effects of its dipositor rashi lord. hence wherever the rashi depositor sits, will also be activated in the chart

      • Sundar says:

VS, And the rasi dispositor’s aspected bhaavs too? i.e. there is an activation of the rasi dispositor… Thanks.

        • VS says:

the bhaav and its depositor are activated during the dasa of any planet. ofcourse the aspected signs also come into play but the farther you go from the general rule the more it is diffuse and not primary effects

  40. Mrugesh says:

    Hi VS,

During any mahadasha can we say that the antardasha of planets which are sitting in the mahadasha lord’s nakshatra are going to be eventful and will give results of the bhav that they are sitting in?
How prevalent is this in practice? Also one related minor observation: if we assign a nakshatra to each dasha starting with moon’s nakshatra, then during the dasha that particular nakshatra is activated. E.g., Moon in Magha, so the vimshottari dasha/nakshtra order will be ketu/magha, venus/p. Phalguni, sun/u. Phalguni etc. So, these particular nakshtra and planets there is gets activated. Is this important in practice?

    Thanks in advance!

Malefic aspect on a Upachaya Bhava:

You mentioned that a Malefic aspect on Upachaya Bhava like 3rd or 11th house is not negative since these Bhavas improve over time.

How about aspects on planets placed in Upachaya Bhavas AND aspected by malefics? Example, any functional benefic placed in a Upachaya Bhava and simultaneously aspected by a functional / generic malefic ? Will that help or deter the aspect receiving planet?

Thanks much in advance for clarifying this question.

    • VS says:

there is no one answer fit all in this scenario. will depend on the functional nature and dignity of planets, closeness of aspects and other yogas or avayogas

    Linear interpolation?

    VS ji,

Suppose a planet is placed between two houses when one of them receives full drishti while the other receiving a partial drishti, how do we arrive at the final aspect strength of the aspecting planet over the aspected planet based on the actual degree of the aspecting planet?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much VS ji.

    • VS says:

for a planet, see the drishti in terms of degrees in full and partial aspects on the planet itself and dont worry that much about the drishti on the depositing rashi whether planet dristi or rashi drishti
again no clear formulas. You develop a sense after you have correlated real life events with actual case study charts

      • Baskar says:

Thanks VS ji.. I like to clarify with just one example scenario please.

For example, we consider the 8th house aspect by Mars to be full aspect whereas the 9th house aspect to be half aspect . That’s is, at 240 degrees from Mars it will be full aspect and at 270 degrees from Mars it will be half aspect. You mentioned we can consider 5 degree radius to have the said impact . So, in this scenario, full aspect will be from 235 degrees to 245 degrees from Mars. Also, half aspect will be from 265 degrees to 275 degrees from Mars.

My question is about the 20 degrees between 245 to 265 degrees from Mars. Will this area have minimal impact ( or ) do we need to do linear interpolation of any planet placed in between, like 254 degrees from Mars? Please let me know.

        Thanks much.

        • VS says:

it will be a linear interpolation of some sort ofcourse. however to avoid such complexity, the sages recommended utilizing only full aspects as opposed to partial (though they do mention that over time an astrologer can learn to dive deeper with partial aspects)

typically any planet has 0 aspect to a point exact 6th from it (150 degrees) and hence if 2 planets are sitting 6-8 to each other, their energies get blocked and hence it becomes a negative situation. same applies to the fact that when sitting 6-8 from the lagna, it is also a negative placement as the planets energy is blocked from the recipient (lagna)

    Jupiter’s aspect:

    VS ji,

Jupiter’s aspects are good to have in general. But if the native belongs to any of Mercury’s Lagna / Venus’s Lagna, being a functional malefic / opposite natured planet, how will be the effect of Jupiter’s aspect ?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much.

    • VS says:

it will still have some generic goodness. however its aspect will carry the impact of the houses it rules, especially saggi sign being it MK. A well placed jupiter for mer and ven lagnas will still do decently good with its aspects

  45. Baskar says:

    Trishadaya planetary aspects:

    VS ji,

Will the aspects of these Trishadaya planets tend to be harmful in general ?

Will that be modified due to its placement – placement in Kendra / Trikona reduces its maleficence BUT placement in 6,8,12 will make it further worse?

    Please let me know.

    • VS says:

generally yes but a planet like saturn which has karakatva of 6, 8 and 12 is much more malefic in these houses and its aspects than jupiter which doesnt have any of the significations of these houses in its general portfolio. So badly placed malefics in these houses are way more terrible than benefics

  46. Mayuresh D Amdekar says:

    VS,

    Excellent article again !

I have a question: Do the aspects of functional benefic but natural malefic planets give both negative and positive effects?

For e.g in case of Venus owned lagnas, Saturn is a yk but will Saturns separative 3rd aspect on Venus in give bad married life in case of a male native? How do we reconcile these differences ?

    • VS says:

yes some mixed results are expected. however in terms of transit, give a bit more importance to general nature

for all other predictions including basic chart yogas, aspects etc, give more importance to the functional nature and not the generic nature

      • Mayuresh D Amdekar says:

        Thanks for the reply.

As an extension to the same question, will Jupiter’s aspects are not as benefic in case of lagna such as taurus or capricorn because of its functional malefic nature?

PS: I personally consider Ju as highly malefic for Capricorn lagna from my case studies. As I understand, you consider Ju as a neutral for capricorn.

        • VS says:

in transit the generic nature still tends to be important though functional nature is also important

jupiter for capricorn is not good, rather completely neutral. if its exalted or own sign etc, it will damage the bhaav and anything it conjuncts as it is now carrying the loss (12th) signification. on the other hand if it sits in its karaka bhaav like 2, 5 or 9th with the bhaav lords like jupiter in taurus for capricorn with venus in taurus. in this case jupiter will give even better results than venus. reason is that it is the karaka of 5th and in 5th with 5th lord. so jupiter will freely give 5th house effects. since venus in this situation is much stronger, jupiter will act as a learning neutral. on the other hand if jupiter sits in cancer with venus (7th house), it will completely detroy or deny marriage as now jupiter is stronger and hence giving loss to both 7th house and 7th karaka (for males)

astrology is much more complex than just rules of x planet good and y bad. most predictions go wrong because sweeping logic is applied by learning astrologers as opposed to application of deeper logic

  49. r pristine says:

    Hello VS:
For Scorpio lagna, Mars in 6th, Saturn in 2nd exactly trinal to Mars. This person has a chronic lung problem (4th house, Saturn MK). FM Budha aspects only 15% from Leo so that is not the reason.
Can trinal conjunctions between enemies cause issues in general or is it because, inthie case, Mars is in Roha-sthaana?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

analyze anything from the perspective of bhaav, bhaavadipatti and bhaav karaka. the more the overlap, the stronger the results. in other words, when jupiter gets associated with say 6th bhaav but is not associated in any manner with mars, saturn or ketu/ rahu – the general karakas of various 6th house negative things, then jupiter will find a hard time in its dasa to give the negative effects of 6th by itself and likewise. bhaav placement is most important and then is rulership and finally general karakas and degrees of closeness to bhaav middle or the other planet (conjunction, aspect or trinal) will give the intensity

      • Sundar says:

So, in this case Scorpio lagna lord Mars is placed in 6th bhaav and that too MK, is also the bhavadipati and gets associated with Saturn by trinality. But saturn is placed in the 2nd bhaav that is not lung related. But it’s focus is on Aquarius by 3rd aspect. Perhaps this aspect is the reason for the effect on the lungs?

        Thanks a lot.

    • VS says:

will act both like 8th and 5th as 5th lord as MK but in its dasa, it will give the results of 2-8 axis more due to placement

Equal house system Vs Sripathi Padhati:

    VS ji,

Is it true that Sage Parashara originally recommended a Bhava chart caculation method similar to “Sripathi Padhatti”? Please let me know.

Based on your advice, I have used only equal house system so far. As we gain more experience, probably Sripathi Padhtti also holds its place. When do we use each of these systems? Kindly clarify.

    Thanks,

    Baskar

    • VS says:

      Hi

In my experience, which admittedly has been more utilizing equal bhaav, I always recommend the equal bhaav system as opposed to Sripathi padhatti. My argument is that in the latter, at very high latitudes, the distortion in bhaavs becomes very significant, almost to the point of absurdity. People born and living in high latitude regions also have lives like other people near the equator in terms of life as elucidated by various bhaavs in a chart and hence it is unlikely that sripathi system can dominate equal bhaav on a normalized global platform of cases.

one point to always note, whether you utilize equal bhaav or sripathi, always utlize bhaav madhya as the strongest point of the bhaav, meaning any planet as close to bhaav madhya as possible is stronger and not vice versa as seen in some systems like Plotemy where they consider the cusp as the strongest part of the bhaav

that said, one can always keep experimenting side by side. It is interesting to note the differences as observed. As you research more, please keep me updated on your findings as well!

    Hi VS,

Regarding Bhaav Aspect, what if a yog karka planet is sitting in bad dignity ..say for example Libra lagna, Saturn , a yoga karka planet sitting in 11th house of Leo. How would we treat its third aspect on lagna (Libra) knowing Venus is sitting in 2nd house so it’s both permanent and mutual friend and hence great friend.
I think Sa being in enemy dignity won’t promote the lagna rather spoil it. Wanna verify from you.

    Thanks in advance.

    • VS says:

saturn in 11th is a great placement and for Libra a great planet. Unless such a saturn is deeply combust, or conjunct/ trinal to ketu or mars or moon, such a saturn will not damage much even if it is agitated in sun’s sign. its dristhi to lagna causes some ups and downs in health but unless venus is deeply afflicted and weak, such health issues are trivial and annoying, even if chronic, but not serious. In other words, it can give a relatively weak constitution or febrile health but not serious diseases

  56. Binay says:

    Hi VS,

I’ve been contemplating this for long but still in-conclusive in my mind.

Taurus lagna, Venus in eight house with Sun though not combust. Shadbal wise also Venus is weak. No other aspects at all.

Can one wear Diamond knowing Venus is lagna lord and 6th lord as well ? I am really puzzled as position wise Venus is bad. Please suggest.

    Hi VS,

Thank you for quick revert. I was also thinking on the similar line. And then I was like let’s purify venus …let’s donate things ruled by venus. Can we?

Secondly Saturn a first grade yogakarka for taurus lagna is in makha nakshtra in 4th house.
It’s with Ketu however very weak conjunction around 25 degree apart. I doubt wearing neelam will help as this agitated Saturn aslo aspect lagna from 4th. Please suggest.

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

        • VS says:

sorry cant provide any insight on this as it is not a generic question

I apologize if this sound non generic but the crux is to understand how a deep malefic like saturn which is agitated (though in kendra) act as far as helath is concerned.

    Hello VS:
I am looking at a female’s chart; Kanya lagna, Sun in first, 6th lord Saturn in 6th, Guru/Venus/Rahu conjunct within 6 degrees in Tula; Running Guru dasa.
    Guru is trinal/aspecting 6th lord.
Guru on one hand is karaka of 2nd sitting with 2nd /9th lord which forms a raj yoga. On the -ve side it is afflicted by Rahu and also activating the sixth lord right through its dasa. What is your evaluation of Guru’s ability to protect the 7th?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

the only thing I can say generically is that such a jupiter will be good wealth and profession as well as good name in social/ professional circles but not for relationships/ marriage

      • Sundar says:

VS: If Guru was not afflicted by Rahu, is it’s aspect on saturn (6th in the 6th) is not good during the Guru dasa for marriage? 7th aspecting the 6th hence curious..

        • VS says:

jupiter in venusian sign is usually not great for the things it represents as it considers in the chart as it considers venus as an enemy. also it is 6-8 to its 7th bhaav and thus damage becomes more to pisces sign for virgo lagna if jupiter is in libra. in addition if close to venus or rahu, it is further agitated. trinality to the 6th lord saturn (6th is loss of 7th and usually 6th activation can lead to seperation/ divorce etc) makes jupiter even worse. saturn in MK is much stronger than jupiter in a venusian sign with rahu. the karaka of wealth is in wealth sign with wealth and lakshmi (9th) lord and so for wealth this is great. the 7th sign pisces is surrounded by saturn on one side and ketu on the other forming classical paap kartaari yoga. if mars as a functional and generic malefic also aspects the 7th bhaav or jupiter, then marriage will be almost impossible to maitain long term

  59. Sandeep says:

Just so I understand your thought process, Jupiter will be good for wealth since it’s placed in the second house with the owner of the house. It will be good for profession since it’s aspecting the tenth. You have not considered KBN since Jupiter is conjunct Rahu/Venus. This placement will not be good for marriage since Venus Is afflicted by a malefic and is sitting with Jupiter which considers it an enemy. In the absence of data on mars’ position, a Malefic for the Lagna, we take Venus as the Karaka for love related matters. Also,For Kanya the seventh will be a badhak. Venus and Jupiter’s seventh aspect on Ketu in the 8th will ameliorate but not be fully favourable for marriage since Jupiter has kendrapathi Dosh and will not be considered as FB for this chart and is paced in an enemy sign. Saturn is lord of of the fifth siting in the sixth and will promote love affairs slowly but of a more permanent nature. It is twelfth from the seventh and will always be a threat to a formal marriage during Jupiter and during its own Dasha that follows. Finally good name in social/ professional circles to be seen from Jupiter’s ninth aspect to the tenth.
All of the above subject to all three planets in the third being relatively close to the bhav madhya.

Is anything I said correct ?

    • VS says:

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation VSji. It really helps clarify the implicit weights you assign different variables in your reasoning – for a student like me.
Elsewhere in this blog you have mentioned that the 6/8 axis to a planet is problematic, inter alia, since quantitatively it can receive neither positive nor negative energies (via aspects) from these bhavs.
Could you please guide us on how to analyse trinality quantitatively and qualitatively

        • VS says:

trinality means same direction and thus the planets will act as if they are conjunct as they are working towards the same goal/ direction. the closer the trinality is to 120 degrees exact, the stronger the trinality

  60. Sundar says:

    Hi VS,

    Hope you are doing good!

Was reading a case study which said for cancer lagna ….Mars in 2nd would afflict it’s own house 5th (scorpio). Mars is yogakarka for cancer lagna.

My question is can a planet afflict it’s own house by 7th or their special aspect ?

    Thanks,

    • VS says:

a planet does not ‘afflict’ its own house. however the aspect of any planet, 7th or a special aspect, will be same as the dignity of the planet itself. if jupiter is afflicted and debilitated, its aspects 5th or 7th or 9th dont still remain fully beneficial etc.

      • Binay says:

        Perfect. Thank you VS.

On the similar line can a well placed & dignified Yogakarka planet say Mars for Cancer lagna, afflict other’s house ? For example Caner lagna, mars (a natural malefic) in 2nd house (well placed, no aspect at all), afflict 9th house (Pisces)?

        Regards,

        • VS says:

it will not afflict the 9th house. however the 8th house of mars can always have some damaging results (think of commonality of mars and 8th house) = destruction, accidents, sudden negative events
The 8th aspect of mars will always carry some blemish of this. If mars is a benefic in the chart and well placed, this is greatly reduced, but still not zero

  63. Binay says:

    Hi VS,

Was pondering over VPR and one thing which to me seems going against the basic dictums of parashari astrology is :: When 6th Lord is in 12th house?
Irrespective of who the lord is, he will always aspect it’s own 6th house. Which means 6th house is getting stronger or it’s gaining strength coz 6th lord is aspecting it’s own house. So why do we say its VPR ..to me it should not be actually. You insights please?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

any planet in the 6, 8 and 12th houses lose power. so if a planet ruling a negative bhaav sits in a dusthana, its potential to carry its negative agenda also becomes weaker when in a dusthana. Any planet when 7th from each other will either be in an enmical sign or at best neutral house and can not be in a friendly house by definition

When we check a horoscope from the Moon, do we also use Bhava Chalit?

For example, I have a Pisces Lagna (25 deg), and Moon is in Libra (05 deg) so it seems like 8th house placement, but in Bhava Chalit, Moon is actually in the 7th House.

So, counting lordships/placements from Moon, is the 1st house ruler/lord actually Mercury (for Virgo), 2nd house ruler/lord is Venus (for Libra), etc? I think this is the correct way now, but I’m not sure.

Or do I use the Rashi chart for Moon, and then 1st house ruler/lord is Venus (for Libra), 2nd house ruler/lord is Mars (for Scorpio), etc. I was doing it this way before, but now it seems wrong.

It’s a bit confusing in my chart, because 3 signs change house placements in the Bhava
    Chalit chart (Moon, Venus, Jupiter).

  69. MRG says:

    Hi VS,
Just observing some patterns w.r.t. Bhavat Bhavam. All Bhavat Bhavam houses are odd numbered. As in no even numbered house is Bhavat bhavam of any house. In that sense all even numbered houses are more ‘final’ or certain in their significance as in they don’t carry secondary effects of other houses? Have you observed this in practice? Also each odd numbered house is BB of two other houses. Interestingly 11 th is BB of 12th and 6th. Hence the most evil sthan probably apart from being the highest ‘kam’ house. Also 7th is very significant house as it carries agenda of 4th and 10th.
I welcome your comments on these observations.

    • VS says:

yes you have good observations. towards your first point, that is just mathematic as e +o = o and that is how refelctions is a circular 12 house chart work.

    • Sundar says:

Yes makes sense. Fourth is sukasthan and if that is good it contributes to a good marriage, a person with a lack of serenity will spoil the marriage. If career is good, it contributes to good marriage. I think the if the 9th from a bhaav is good, it will carry that house ( though it is not a BB ). Also to note, the much maligned 12th is 9th to Mother ( 4th). So, if there are three children and one has a 12th with good aspects, the mother will get bhaagya from this child, perhaps not from the other two.
The only BB that I think may not be good for the next is 8th from 8th unlike 6th from 6th. It brings a lot of stink from a moksha trikon into the kama-trikon.

      • MRG says:

        Hi Sundar,
It is the other way according to BB rules. 7th carries signification of 4th and 7th.

So if one has strong seventh, i.e., happy marriage/partner then home life and career is in some way automatically is good. That also makes sense. Or in other words if a person is not able to relate with ‘other’ well, he is doomed in domestic peace and at work.
