Analyzing Basics – Transits (II)

In part (I) you learnt most of the concepts to be utilized while analyzing transits. This was a pretty elaborate list of points to know while analyzing how a transiting planet will behave through a particular sign and Bhaav.

However for the sake of completion of this article, some other things are worth mentioning as well. These concepts should be at least mentioned, even though a detailed explanation avoided at this stage to prevent information overdose or confusing a learner.

Some additional factors to be considered while analyzing a particular planet are –

  • Transit from Lagna (in addition to Moon)
  • Transit from Arudha Lagna
  • Transit from the natal position of planet itself
  • Bhaav bala (another concept like Shadbala is for planets, Bhav bala calculations aim at quanitifying the strength of a bhaav)
  • Shadbala of owner of Bhaav in horoscope
  • Istha phala of owner of Bhaav in horoscope
  • Average SAV and BAV bindus (dots)
  • Planet transit from Natal planets in D1, D9 & D60

As an example, let me produce the following horoscope as a reference again-

Chart example

Now for analyzing the effects of Rahu in this horoscope in transit through various signs, I put together a worksheet as below  (click to enlarge). The results are plotted with the straight line representing the average quantified number for each sign. Below 0 is negative and above 0 positive (duh!). Average is +0.6. The higher it is, better will be the results of Rahu transit.

The reader might at this stage realize that this is time intensive and complicated mathematically. This example is just meant to be a thought exercise. In regular practice, one will not have the time or energy to go through all these details, but with experience a lot of them will come to an astrologer intuitively. You have to take my word for it now. But for a beginner, it is always a good practice to know the minions that make the gears turn and understand that over simplifying this art will also tend to give incomplete results in general and hence should not be done so.

V,would you be kind enough to give a south Indian chart along with the north Indian one…..or at least birth details? Have a great day

  2. VS says:

    Hi Rose,

Will make sure to give birth data for future charts. For this one-

This is really complex and with many other factors added makes astrology as a very complex field of study. Ideal for engineers and PhDs in science-math.

This is also why may be so many predictions go wrong. My personal experience here.

And i am skeptical of most astrologers for the same reason esp. those who are not well educated. This is a deep science requiring intense effort and intellect. If it is just intuition, then one can go to clairvoyants – psychics or tarot practitioners ..

Also, astrology predicts basis previous birth/s. What happens to the karma accumulated in this birth esp for someone after 40? This makes prediction even more difficult ?

what about some element of strong free will or spirituality on the part of the individual.
As I am a new learner, these are some of my initial thoughts..but vert fascinating field..

    Hi VS

How useful are Tajaka and Tithi Pravesh charts in predictions ? JHora has both options
Between the 2 which is more relevant – because they seem to throw up different futures

    thanks

  5. Siva says:

    Hi VS

When analyzing a transit, do we consider the planetary positions of D-9 and D-10 as per their current charts in JHora , which is different from that of D1 and analyze for their respective chart results ? Or do we just just overlay the current D1 transit positions over the natal D9&D10 charts ? Not much clarity around this.

    Regards
    Siva

    • VS says:

in any divisional chart these days saturn is currently transiting saggi and jupiter is transiting Libra, so you dont look for where saturn is in D9 or D10 at the moment, the rasi is saggi and thats what it is in D1 or any other divisional

nice articles, well done. Thank you

  7. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
    Basic questions…
    1. When Jupiter transits into Saggi is dispositor Guru activated? If yes, can you kindly clarify the below questions
    2. How profound is the activation as compared to a Guru MD/AD?
    3. Is the natal Jupiter’s strength more important or is the BAV/PAV points in Saggi more important?

    • VS says:

I have no magic formulas for your questions, even though they are valid in their own merit. most important is basic yogas and chart strength. next is the dasa combinations. transit is least important in that regards. it has no relevancy without the right yoga or dasa in play and yet it is relevant because it can act to find the timing of events in tandem with dasas. asktakvarga should not be relied on without first reading the transit from natal chart, moon and natal planets. high or low bindus can only give intensity to some extent. exmaple if a planet is well placed in a certain rashi say jupiter in cancer in transit for virgo moon/ lagna. now if the 11th bhaav has 46 bindus in sav and 8/8 BAV for jupiter, this will tell you that whatever results jupiter was going to give there, will be magnified or intensified to a large extent….and likewise for low for negative transits

      • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. You have mentioned the double transit effect (Guru and Saturn looking together at one rasi) whereby it activates that rasi. Should I analyze the effects of the rasi dispositor activation only in this case (it is important because it also affects the house where the dispositor sits)? And where there is no dual activation, just look at the effect of the transitting planet on the bhaav without going into the dispositor’s activation?

  8. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
This is about Moon or Sun being the 8th lord and their functional neutrality. Can you kindly clarify if the following are correct:
    1. During the dasa, they will not manifest the effects of the 8th but they will mimic rasi lord and the conjunct planet
    2. Since they are FN, they will not bring the effects of the 8th in the posited house
    3. Any other planet sitting in the 8th house will not be affected by the 8th’s effects.
Please answer to each point if possible/required.

    Thanks

    • VS says:

8th or 12th or 6th have some good effects also example 6th can give the stamina to fight, courage etc, 8th can be sudden lotteries/ legacies etc any planet owning 8th will carry the agenda of 8th where it sits. question is if stronger planets sit with it or aspect it or if it sits in a good house whose lord is very strong then the negative agenda is minimized from the 8th lord. same applied to all planets not just sun and moon

further no matter what rasi in 8th, any planet sitting close to the bhaav madhya of 6 or 8 or 12th bhaav will suffer to some extent especially related to the areas ruled by the MK sign of that planet. example if jupiter sitting in middle of 8th bhaav for leo. since jupiter is FB for leo and also a good planet, it sitting in 8th can actually give money/ assets/ property due to its aspects on 2nd and 4th bhaavs. however since MK sign is 5th of children and jupiter is karaka of children, its position in the middle of 8th bhaav can be very detrimental for atleast 1 of the kids the native has, especially a male child or elder child as jupiter represents male gender

      • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. Acccording to parashara (you have mentioned elsewhere), Sun and Moon as the 8th lord are FN. What is the impact of them being neutral and not FM/FB in a chart? What good accrues and what -ve is at least somewhat nullified? I am trying to understand the impact of them being functionally neutral. Thank you

        • VS says:

sun and moon are royal planets. they are saatvik in nature and like father- mother. hence by themselves, they never are purely good or bad. they will change as per conditions, placements, aspects etc. ofcourse for saggi ruled by its close friend and sun ruling the 9th, sun is certainly more benefic than for capricorn, having said that, by itself the placement of sun, its depositors and its aspects and dignity is likely to impact its nature more than just the ownership

by itself 8th is not that evil, 3, 6 and 11 houses carry an evil potential and hence 8th in that sense, even though a dusthana signifying endings/ death/ transformation etc. is still not by itself evil or bad. sometimes change/ endings can lead to much better beginnings in life or sudden events can be positive like winning a lottery!

      • Rahul says:

        Sir
In the above case bhava madhya is 15 degree of a particular bhava or the degree of ascendant?

  9. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
For DJT, when Saturn moves to makar, is its aspect on Cancer and natal Saturn strong enough and damaging enough to overcome the effects of the guru dasa which is posited in the second and is a FB? Natal Saturn will be triggered and will aspect natal Jupiter but if there would be any bad effects from that, we should have seen it when Saturn is in dhanur.
Thanks. I am trying to understand the transit and dasa effects

    • VS says:

yes in my opinion loss karakatva of 12th and 6th of troubles and enemies is trigerred and it is a bad period once saturn moves to capricorn. in saggi, it was in a functionally benefic sign and 5th bhaav from lagna. now it is the 6-12 axis coming up. when jupiter joins in capricorn, it gets really bad

      • Sundar says:

Hypothetical question: What alternative position/yoga of Guru (in Guru dasa) would be enough to overcome the Saturn 6/12 axis? I realize there could be quite a few possibilities…how about Guru in the 9th and trinal to Saturn..?

        • VS says:

guru will give results of 5-11 axis. it has to be seen from arudha/ moon in this case and its main yoga was only along the jup-jup period
jup-sat is negative and disruptive for career. jup-mer can be fatal as for scorpio as well as leo it is a top maraka and will give immense wealth but can end life if the kaal is reached. jupiter is in mer domain, passing jup-mer dasa is a big achievement in terms of longevity

  10. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
I have analyzed 5 charts of mothers re: the date when they had children and the transit of md/ad/pd planets. I looked at the transits of the three planets over the 5th bhaav, 5th lord or karaka Guru in the the natal Rasi and D-7 charts. To clarify, I am seeing the D-1 transit over D-1 natal and D-7 transit over D-7 natal. In all cases, I am seeing two or all three planets transitting over/opposite/trinal in both charts.
    Is trinality/opposite valid in D-7?
    Any comments?

  11. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Re: What is the effect of a transitting planet’s aspect on another transit planet? Say Tula lagna, natal Mars in 9th.
Say Guru is transitting in Cancer and Mars transitting in Capricorn direct opposite. Does this affect the 7th and 12th somewhat in D-1? I understand that the transit of Guru over the 7th or over Mars would be more potent.
Is this more applicable in vargas? Say in the D-9 transit chart, Guru is conjunct /opposite Mars (same natal lagna/planet positions as in D-1 is assumed)? Can it indicate the timing of an event?
    Thank you.

    • VS says:

when any slow moving planet transits over a D1 planet, look at what the planet owns, where it sits and how good/ bad its dignity and strength is. This will be activated along with the houses, especially MK house the planet owns.

so for example jupiter transiting over natal Mars or its houses is much more potent a transit to activate mars as opposed to jupiter aspecting or conjunct mars in the transit

      • Karthik says:

        Hello VS,

Will the effect be the same when any slow moving planet moves over a natal planet? Say Jupiter / Saturn or Rahu transiting over Mars – would it just activate Mars? Will the natural friendship or enmity between Mars and the transiting planet alter the effect in any way?

        • VS says:

all planets affect all natal planets in transit. Ofcourse the ones which are slower moving will impact the other planets more as the transit lingers along for longer. both natural and functional effects of a planet have to be taken into consideration while making predictions

  12. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Just want to run this method of prediction by you about when things can happen :
Say the question is : When can I get a promotion, I have been told this year; born in January, Sukla paksha, Panchami.
I look at the natal chart and it looks good for career and the dasa is good; look at tithi pravesh D-1 and D-10 charts for 2020. In D10 kanya lagna I see tenth lord Budha in 10th together with Venus; Since it looks possible, I see the Vimshottari dasa for the tithi chart and see that Budha Venus AD/PD is in August middle.
To re-confirm from the natal and transits, I look at the transit for August middle in D-10. In natal D10, lagna is Aquarius and 10th lord Mars is in Leo. The D-10 transit for August 15th – 20th shows Saturn aspecting natal Mars.
I checked a few known charts and this seems to work.

I want to know if this is logical approach.

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

sure sounds logical, if it works well for a large number of case studies, then you will know for sure for yourself that it is correct. It might not always hold in 100% of cases but even then no one can predict future 100% accurately, atleast not anyone I know personally

      • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. My first queries to you on astrology were in December 15, 2016 !!. I am grateful to you for all this KT. I appreciate all the time you have given me. If I were you, I don’t think I could do it.

  13. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
Re: Transit or Dasa and the rasi’s PAV
When, say, Jupiter is transitting in a rasi, the planets/lagna that give rekhas in that Rasi to Jupiter alone should count in supporting it, I would think. Does the SAV score for that Rasi matter and how much? They are supporting other planets, not Guru…

    • VS says:

well the SAV is just the net sum of all the planets to that area in a chart, so obviously the higher it is, the better the rasi is generally for transits. that said, yes any planet’s individual BAV is more important in terms of relative weightage than total SAV

  14. Sundar says:

Hello VS, Guru will be in Saggi from June 30. Saturn is at four degrees in Capricorn. Isn’t this resembling the Saturn Guru conjunction an year back in Saggi but with less intensity?

    • VS says:

A conjunction is technically anything within 15 degrees. Which for jupiter and saturn continues from end 2019 and into 2021

  15. MRG says:

    Hi VS,

What is your experience on transits of Rahu/Ketu.

Assuming that dasha activates them, How these 3 types of Rahu/Ketu Transits differ?

    1. Rahu/Ketu on Natal rahu/ketu (I believe strongest effects?)
    2. Rahu/Ketu axis in trine with natal Rahu/ketu.
    3. Rahu over natal Ketu and vice versa.

Is there any qualitative difference between these transits?

    Thanks
    MRG

    • VS says:

conjunction is always stronger than trinal

any planet that is transiting over itself while its dasa is also running will increase the effect it has in the general chart (good or bad). any dasa planet when it transits over any other planet will bring out the same impact (kind of compound relationship) with the planet in the natal chart

  16. Sandeep says:

    Hi VS,

Are the transits over natal planets that are vargottam more intense in their effects (favourable/unfavourable) ?

    • VS says:

well not sure if I can generalize such a rule but any virgottam planet is strongly connected to that particular rashi and thus its effects can be more intense than usual surely

  17. MKS says:

Could you please elaborate on the effects of Saturn, Rahu & Jupiter transiting over their respective natal positions, and how they are different than their other transits. thanks

    • VS says:

as these planets return to their respective positions in over a decade and in almost 3 decades for Saturn, these transits become extremely important

Whenever any planet transits over its natal position, whatever good or bad effects it holds in the horoscope will get enhanced functionally as well as the generic effects of the planet also get enhanced to some extent. the same holds for saturn, jupiter and the nodes as well.

  18. Sandeep says:

    Hello VSji

In transit, is more weight given to special aspects or trinality ? Especially for the slower moving planets

  19. kodi0014 says:

How do eclipses affect one? How much impact do they have? What is the general interpretations of them, like for example are they generally good in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from moonsign or lagna? In Brhat Samhita it is said that if eclipse falls on moonsign, mother’s relatives suffer, on sunsign it is father’s side that suffers. Can you give your views on the whole topic?

    • VS says:

Moon and sun are generic karakas for mother and father respectively. Likewise mars for brother etc. So yes you could use some guiding prini plus that are generic

Eclipses are good in upaachyas from both lagna and moon sign

  20. R pristine says:

Sir, a very comprehensive article giving various complexities of transits.
A doubt remains. Guru(FB too)though strong,is much afflicted by malefics in Natal. Will he trigger & give good results in transit over a natal planet-having good promise therein?(no aspects on Guru in transit). Thanks in advance. Regards.

  21. R pristine says:

Sir; Thank you for responding. You are one of very
giving clear logic. So One more question sir.
In Natal,a grah is under both benefic, malefic aspects. When it gets both benefic, malefic transits over it by conjuct/aspects together–do we consider NET of transit to trigger? ie, if Natal +&-ve aspects are Unequal, then too nothing will be triggered if we see it by net of transit basis which can be zero?
    Thanks in anticipation.Regards.

    • VS says:

good and bad will coexist and not always cancel each other out.

example say when JFK was assassinated at a young age. He was the president of the US as well as well loved and admired which shows some great dasas were ongoing. likewise obviously losing your life untimely in a violent fashion shows some bad planets operating. these things didnt cancel each other out. they both existed

  22. R pristine says:

    Sir; Thanks for lucid reply.
A strong natal Jupiter giving very good results by aspect/conjuct therein. Will he trigger equally good results in transit when not so strong (just average strong)in transit? Thanks. Regards.

    • VS says:

yes a strong natal planet will tend to remain strong by transit as well. however its actual transit strength will also modify the result. If a strong natal jupiter is transiting in capricorn or closely combust, its effect will temporarily be muted during that time
