Analyzing Basics – III

12) Eclipses

When the sun-moon axis aligns with the Rahu-Ketu axis, a Solar or Lunar eclipse occurs respectively.

Think of this as reverse of combustion in terms of Sun. When any planet comes too close to the Sun, it gets ‘invisible’ or ‘burnt up’ and loses power to protect the significations of the houses it rules in the chart. However the opposite occurs when Sun comes close to Rahu or Ketu. It is “swallowed” up, or so to speak and becomes weak. Within 8 degrees of Rahu or Ketu, this is more prominent.

Another thing to be noted is when Moon is too close to Rahu, the mind gets predisposed to Paranoias, obsessions and phobias. In addition the mind and emotions get an extreme nature in their intensity and such a person can have wild swings in their moods/ feelings and imagination. This can also disturb sleep and other things which Moon is a significator of like mother, sleep etc. Likewise when Sun is too close to Rahu the ego gets amplified in a negative way, there can be problems to or with father or authority/ government.

Also to be kept in mind is the fact that both the nodes expand the characteristics of any planet they sit with, but in a weird-Karmic or psychological fashion. Ketu can increase a planets energy by internalizing that energy and Rahu by externalizing. Hence Moon with Ketu can give a detached mind (from materialistic things) but if Moon is otherwise strong, the person has strong powers of concentration. Likewise Sun with Ketu can make for a spiritual soul and person whose ego is checked. If Sun is weak in dignity that can mean self-esteem issues, but if Sun is strong it can imply a very well balanced/ humble personality which has powers of concentration and good ideals/ morals in life.

13) Nodes

Things to be kept in mind regarding nodes are-

  • Will give results of the bhaav they sit in and rashi and Nakshatra they sit in and its lord. So example if Rahu is in Cancer, it will act like Moon (owner of Cancer) and so dignity of moon in chart will also dictate intensity and nature of results of Rahu
  • They amplify and reflect the effects of planets they are conjunct with. E.g. in the above example when Rahu is with Mars in Cancer, it will not only give results like Moon but also like Mars as it will ‘mimic’ or reflect Mars. So whatever Mars promises in the chart will be given by Rahu
  • They create some order of confusion and uncertainty in the houses they sit in. The house where Rahu sits in is the area where the native will put in a lot of energy in this life time and run after the issues of the house. The house where Ketu sits in, the person will be sort of detached to the significations of that house.
  • Typically Rahu and Ketu give good results in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th Bhaavas and relatively negative in the other bhaavas
  • Both Rahu & Ketu will tend to give sudden results in their planetary dasas related to houses they sit in and planets they conjunct. Positive or negative will depend on the planet and bhaav and their dignities
  • By inherent nature, Rahu acts like Saturn in terms of blocking, delaying, throwing problems in a native’s path and Ketu acts like Mars or giving anger, sudden results/ surgeries/ injuries etc. But this inherent nature is modified as per planets they conjunct of course. So if Rahu sits with Venus in a chart, it will tend to give results like Venus and whatever Venus rules in that particular chart
  • If Rahu or Ketu sit in a Kona house (1,5 or 9th) and are conjunct or aspected by a Kendra lord (1,4,7 or 10th) then they will give Yoga Karaka results or very good results. This will happen if Rahu-ketu sit in a Kendra house and conjunct or aspected by a Kona lord
  • If Rahu or Ketu get related to the 8th house by placement or conjunction, their malefic nature increases and more so the likelihood of some sudden even goes up manifold. This is because 8th house also represents sudden events and Rahu and Ketu are Karakas (significators) or sudden events

14) Planetary War

When 2 planets are so close to each other that they have less than 1 degree space in between them, they fight for space and it’s called ‘Grah Yudha’ or Planetary war. This is usually negative. The planet with the higher degree is deemed as the Winner and the other the Loser. Notably the Loser planet will always manifest some problems related to the significations of houses in rules. Example Mars at 10.2 degrees and Venus at 10.8 degrees in Aries. In this case Venus wins the war and Mars loses as Venus is ahead of’ Mars

15) Yogas

Coming to a topic which is perhaps in the top 3 of most important in terms of analyzing a horoscope. This topic is vast both in depth and breadth and takes years to master. Yoga means a combination of 2 or more planets in a given sign. Generally the closer the 2 or planets are to each other in terms of longitudes (degrees) the stronger the Yoga.

In Vedic astrology there are thousands of Yogas. These is simply because of all the permutation/ combinations possible for 2 or more planets conjoining each other.

Good Yogas are generally called as ‘Raj Yogas’, wealth yogas are called ‘Dhan Yogas’. A negative Yoga can be a ‘Dur Yoga’ or “Arishtha Yoga’.

Among thousands of Yogas, BV Raman mentions 300 very important ones in one of his treatises, which I would highly recommend to the reader.

As of now, for the scope of this article, a few things worth knowing are as follows

  • Lords of a Kona (1,5,9) combining with each other is exceptionally good
  • Lords of a Kona (1,5,9) combining with a Kendra lord (1,4,7 and 10) is also a great +ve Yoga
  • Lords of Kona or Kendra combining with a Dusthana (6,8 or 12) lord is Negative
  • Lords of two Dusthana lords combining with each other is called ‘Vipreet Raj Yoga’ or in other words –ve/-ve becomes positive. This Yoga typically works after initial difficulties and struggles which lead to a heavily positive scenario later
  • Since the lords of Dusthana carry negativity with them, it is best if they are situated in another Dusthana (example 6th lord in 8th or 8th in 12th or 12th in 8th) etc.
  • Any house whose lord is in own house or exaltation will try to enhance the significations of its rulership house
  • When a planet is combust or debilitated or weak in dignity as per the dignity rules we know, it will give problems related to the area it rules in the horoscope and also the area it is placed in
  • As mentioned before when a planet rules 12th, see its other lordship. Even though 12th is a dusthana, if the other house it rules is a Kona then the results will be good and not bad. Example for Gemini Venus rules the 12th house and also the 5th But Mooltrikona sign is 5th. Hence Venus will give more of 5th house which is great. So a well placed Venus will give very good results inspite of its 12th rulerships
  • Very important point to note is that Good and Bad yogas can co-exist and not really cancel each other. As an example say a person has Capricorn rising with Saturn (1st and 2nd lord) with mercury (6th and 9th lord) and Jupiter (3rd and 12th) lord all in 9th house, then 1, 2 and 9 combining in the 9th is a strong Raj yoga and positive. Jupiter in 9th will tend to give good results too as it’s a neutral planet for Capricorn (refer to functionality of planets) but still it is also the 12th lord in 9th and 6th lord in 9th This implies the person can be fortunate and rich (1st and 2nd lords in 9th) but also wavering health (1st lord combining with 6th lord) and can have relations with father disturbed or lose his father early in life (12th lord in 9th of father and 6th lord in 9th). Thus when analyzing any Yoga, -ves and +ves can co-exist.

Please note that softwares like Jhora and others might even list many of the Yogas. But one has to keep in mind that how much a Yoga will manifest depends on the strength/ dignity of planets involved and closeness of Yoga and many other factors the reader has already learnt as of now.

16) Dashas & Transits

Again an extremely vast topic which we are not going to discuss right now.

What we have discussed till now is some basics of what signs, houses and planets represent. How dignities of planets can be seen and a horoscope made. By all those tools one can see the promise within a horoscope. However WHEN a good or bad event precipitates is to be seen by predictive tools of Dashas and Transits. These are used for TIMING the events and the promises a horoscope holds. These topics will be dealt with later

Next I will post a couple of detailed Case studies of well-known personalities and even from what you have briefly learnt as of now, you can see how the theory applies in analyzing a horoscope.

U hv written abt grah yudha…wat happen when sun n venus in same house with very less difference in degrees in sign of tarus libra n sun

  2. bala says:

I have the same question. If Venus is close to sun, and if Venus is advanced in degrees, would it win? It could be any sign.
Your posts are very informative and please keep them coming.

Vivek, do the planets sitting in the maraksthana do harm to the the houses it owns? Does the lord of a maraksthana do harm to the house it sits in? If true, does this apply to 2nd and 7th houses?

    Effect of Depositor:

    Dear VS ji,

I request you to please clarify one more doubt as follows:

Rashi / Nakshatra / Navamsa depositor: How do they support the planets placed on them..case 1: If the depositor is a functional benefic..Case 2: If the depositor is functional malefic?

If the depositor is placed in good dignity in Rashi chart but ill placed in Chalit chart..What will be effects??

If the depositor is deblilitated or in inimical Sign in Rashu chart but placed well in Chalit chart..say Kona or Kendra..what will be its effwcts??

    Asdyming both cases

    • VS says:

Rashi chart shows the planets real feelings, good or bad. example if moon is in 5th rashi or Taurus, it remains super happy as its exalted. This is true even if it moves into 4th bhaav in chalit or remains in 5th. What changes is the impact it has in its dasha..if it remains in 5th then it will give the 5-11 axis results. if it goes into 4th then 4-10 axis results. likewise if 2 planets are forming raj yoga in the 9th bhaav but move into 8th in chalit, it means that they are more than 15 degrees away from the bhaav Madhya of 9th. this shows that their impact on 9th is feeble and hence in this situation, the raj yoga remains but becomes much weaker in intensity

      • Baskar says:

Very nice explanation. Thank you very much VS ji.

Do we still to consider if the depositor is a functional benefic ( or ) functional malefic?

Scenario: Analyzing the dasa prospects of any positive Graha for Lagnesh

If the Graha under consideration is placed in a functional Malefic’s rashi, will it produce diminished positive results during its dasa

        AND

On the contrary, if the same graha is placed in a functional benefic’s rashi, I guess it will produce enhanced positive results.

Am I understanding it right? Please let me know.

        Baskar

        • VS says:

if a functional benefic is placed in a bad domain, then it depends on the strength of the depositor. If the malefic depositor is much stronger than the benefic, then majority impact will be negative and the benefic will not be able to protect the areas it rules. if the depositor is weaker than the benefic then the reverse will happen

  5. Vidya says:

VS – What is the 4-10 axis result mean? In bhav, will 7th aspect be seen?

    • VS says:

      yes aspects always apply
if sun is sitting in virgo for Capricorn lagna (9th rashi) but goes back into 8th bhaav in chalet, its aspect will still fall in pisces but the axis affected will be 2-8 and not 3-9

      • Sundar says:

        Sri VS:
In the above example, I have 2 questions:
        1. Is it like sun bringing its own significations + the significations of the 9th (which itself includes the significations of the house where sun is the lord) into the 8th?
        2. Do special aspects also apply? In this case, if it was saturn instead of sun, does the 3rd aspect affect Libra?

  6. Kms says:

    Your quote:
“Lords of a Kona (1,5,9) combining with each other is exceptionally good
Lords of a Kona (1,5,9) combining with a Kendra lord (1,4,7 and 10) is also a great +ve Yoga”

By the word “combining” you mean “conjunction” only, or it could be any type of connection such as aspect, exchange of lordship, etc. Thanks

  7. Aditya says:

    Dear VS,

Saturn Sade sathi is calculated from moon kundali.
If ascendent is Capricorn and moon sign is pisces – can these 7.5 yrs give mixed results.

    Regards, Aditya

    • VS says:

7.5 yrs will usually always be mixed. the dasas operating as well as the general strength of moon and saturn in the horoscope will dictate many things

  8. Ajay Pahooja says:

Hi VS. Similar question is whether conjunction of Mars (Lord of 1)and Saturn (Lord of 10 )for Aries ascendant , in the 2nd house is a rajyoga, going by the definition. Do we have to ignore the enmity?
Will appreciate if you clear this doubt. Thanks

    • VS says:

it will be good for wealth and career but not good for longevity as 2 hard core enemies aspecting 8th bhaav from the marak 2nd bhaav

  9. Asena says:

    Dear VS
How about a Mars& Rahu in 2nd (Cn) and Saturn& Ketu in 8th (Cap)?
[Moon is exalted but weaning, and is in 12 th h.]

Please share your take on that.
Thank you so much for your time and attention.
    BR

    • VS says:

This is not a good combination as mars is as evil planet for gemini and with rahu in 2nd it can give accidents to the individual as well as to his or her family members. multiple surgeries in life might happen as well. however the person might have a long life as long as saturn and ketu are not within 10 degrees. sun should also be ideally decently strong for a long life

  10. deepa says:

VS Sir, How about saturn sitting in 8th house of Leo, along with sun, for capricorn lagna? I presume it will give longevity as 8th house lord is strong? and saturn is karak? How will results differ if sun and saturn are closely conjunct vs more than 10 degrees apart

    • VS says:

      farther is better
generally saturn in this situation will give hardships in life and health issues which are long term and debilitating. life can be long but with health issues and financial ups and downs

  11. Hemlata says:

    Sir

What if lord of kona (2 and 9) is sitting in 5th in D1 but moves to 6th in bhav chalit? Is it still capable of being good?

  12. Hemlata says:

    Sir,

Thank you for the great write-up.
I have read somewhere that if mercury is combust and retro and higher degree than sun, it can make a person genius. What are your views on this, not withstanding other factors?

  13. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
I am looking at a lady’s chart with 4 children, one undeveloped and another with delayed development issues.
    1. Mesha lagna with Sun in 12th exactly trinal to Saturn in Cancer.
    2. Karaka Guru in the 2nd with Sukra exalted but 9 degrees from Sun.
    3. From Guru, 5th house lord Budhan goes into 12th (lagna).
    4. Lagna lord Mars is in 11th and looking at the 5th from Lagna.
    5. Fifth’s arudha is Tula and Rahu sits there.

Lots of unfavorable pointers, I have 2 questions:
    1. Is #1 the main issue?
    2. Guru is neutrally placed and is very strong although the 4th aspects from Mars in the eleventh. So, is karaka secondary to the lordship? Please clear this point.

    Thanks

    Sundar

    • VS says:

in astrology the more specific a point, the more powerful it is
thats why placement of planets more important that just rulership
rulership more important that generic good/ bad nature
      lordship more important that karakatva
lagna more important than moon (slower) which is more important tha sun(slowest lagna)
Arudha lagna more important than moon lagna

  14. Johny says:

    Hello VS:

Could you please explain for me the meaning of the word ” combining ”

Please give me an example of ” Lords of a Kona (1,5,9) combining with a Kendra lord (1,4,7 and 10) is also a great +ve Yoga ”

    Thanks so much

  15. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Re: MD after reading your blog on Mahadasa:
Taurus Lagna, Sun dasa, Sun+Budha yoga in 3rd. During Sun MD, Sun delivers the functional results of 2nd and 5th. Question: does it deliver the effects on the 3rd, I think yes.
Dispositor Moon in Pisces and trinal to 3rd. During the Moon dasa, does the Sun+Budha yoga get reactivated?

Thanks and btw, the MD blog is super.

    • VS says:

a planet will give results of where it sits, where it aspects as well as of all other planets sitting with it, aspecting it or trinal to it. closer the degrees, stronger the impact

  16. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
I want your help on this analysis:
Mesha Lagna, Guru exalted, Saturn in 10th forming 9/10 raja yoga. This is good for career
Moon in 8th opposite to Venus in Taurus – shows moon’s preoccupation with wealth/sex but exalted Guru’s aspects Moon. Guru’s aspect on Moon would temper Moon’s passion.

Now comes the part that tickles my curiosity: There is a link between 8th lord/Moon in 8th/3rd lord. Budha is in 12th and trinal to Moon. Mars in the 3rd very closely conjunct Ketu. I have verified from a few famous people charts that 3rd/8th/Budha/Moon combination produces what in old days was called sexual deviancy. In addition, Saturn, a FM, aspects the 12th, Mars aspects saturn from the 3rd. Moon’s preoccupation is with Venus/3rd lord/Mars in 3rd.
Guru’s aspect is the sole good part.
You think the deviancy part is probable?

    • VS says:

sure, possible, but would be speculation on my part to a large extent. Moon, debilitated in the 8th is generally terrible for longevity. aspects of venus and jupiter certainly help (although venus aspect is a double whammy as it lords 2 maraka sthanas)such a moon if 1) not bright (close to sun), 2) trinal or conjunct/ aspected by Ketu/ rahu or mars can cut short life in a very violent fashion

  17. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Mesha lagna, mars in 9th with Moon, Guru in 11th, Rahu in 12th, alone, aspected by neech Venus. In D9 Scorpio lagna with Venus in Taurus. I have a few questions on the Rahu dasa:
#1. Will Rahu show its effect on the 11th or 12th since Guru is rasi dispositor?
#2. Venus’ aspect on Rahu would show on the 12th, would it not? if it does and the results may not be good, Mars in a yoga with Moon is aspecting the 12th from the 9th. While that may be benefical, it’s aspect on Rahu in the 12th combined with Venus’ aspect on Rahu may show shadyness.
How do you read this? It’s a mixed bag hence asking for advice

    • VS says:

for any planet, see a) where the bhaav placement and full aspects are, b) planets that conjunct, opposition or trinal to the planet or fully aspect the planet, c) where the rashi depositor is

results can and will be mixed when the above factors show mixed effects

      • Abhishek Pande says:

18 years long period can indeed be a mixed bag, in this case, based on the info provided, wanted to share my thoughts:
        1. Guru deposits both Ra and the Mars / Moon yoga hence Guru’s & Saturn’s strength here are the key to how much beneficial (mostly financially) this period be for this person, esp. the Rahu – Mars period in which I believe this yoga will be fully reflected (more than the Ra – Gu period… 4-10 vs 2-12)
        2. Depending on age of this person (have to apply the DKP filter), mothers health may suffer during the Rahu – Mars period (both of them aspect 4th bhav and karaka and lord moon is associated with Mars as well)
        3. Rahu – Venus (7th lord in 6th and karaka for relationship) will be troublesome period for relationships), although Guru’s 9th aspect on 7th bhav is a saving grace here
        4. Rahu – Ketu period could give health issues for this person due to 6-12 axis being activated and Mars aspect on Rahu from a fiery sign

  18. Eknath Patil says:

    Dear Vivekji,
What will be the effect if lord of 8 th( Dusthana house) is malefic and exalted and aspect the 8 th house. There can be two possibilities
    1. The planet is naturally and functionally malefic and due to exaltation it has become more malefic and such a malefic planet’s aspect on the 8 th house will completely destroy 8 th house and most negative results should expected.( sudden change which are painful and gives agony , accident, death etc)
    2. Even though the planet is malefic and became more malefic and strong due to exaltation but aspecting to its own house and hence instead of destroying it’s positive signification it will protect the house more strongly by increasing it’s positive attributes such as increase in longevity, spirituality, occult knowledge, transformation of the self for betterment.
    3. How the result will alter if ketu and benefic(Jupiter or venus or Mercury or Lagnesh) planets are deposited in the 8 th house.
    4. how the results will alter if benefic aspects the 8 th th house and benefic is deposited in the 8 th house along with 8 th co lord Ketu.
    kindly give your opinion.

    Regards
    Eknath Patil

    • VS says:

any planet whether a natural benefic or malefic, if it is exalted and aspects its own house, will enhance the significations of the ruled house, no matter what house it is. 8th house also has positive features to it like long life, power of research/ concentration, sudden gains, inheritance etc.

  19. Sandeep says:

    Hi VS,

How do you interpret the MD/AD of the 7th lord and 2nd lord that are two benefics in conjunction and creating a rajyog? I understand that this can lead to death or death like situations, but is the rajyog hampered ? For example, Jupiter and Venus conjunct so PE and TE.

    Thanks

    • VS says:

for longevity, the correct aayu kaal has to have been reached (alp, madhyam & dheerg)
the involved planets should have some aspects/ relationship with natural killers – saturn, rahu and ketu (or mars)
good and bad coexist as in real life. a yoga can dispense royalty or wealth and bad health/ death at the same time.

Sir; you are so clearly unraveling astro complexities. So it is the first go-to site for me.
    I am confused re following.
Chandr Budh yuti,it is said,is good for chandr but bad for Budh. If such chandr is FB too,is it still bad for Budh &it’s signification?(assume no aspects on them,& they are in neutral bhav). Thanks. Regards.

    • VS says:

it will all depend on the chart, the bhav where this happens, planets conjuncting, trinal and surrounding these planets and various dignities. generally for any lagna, it is better to have the FB planets strong and FM planets relatively weaker

  21. r pristine says:

Sir; If moon-lagna kundali gives very contradicting results against ascendant-kundali (both equally strong);how to arrive at overall results? Thanks.regards.

    • VS says:

there is no easy answer to this. one learns via experience. various focal points like lagna, arudha lagna, moon and sun signs and dasa signs all contribute
