Dignity of Planets (Part Dos)

(III) Avasthas

These are of many kinds. The pertinent one to know early on in learning is ‘Baaladi’ Avastha.

In Odd signs – Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagi, and Aquarius – a planet as per degrees in the sign is in the following avastha-

0-6 degrees (Infancy) Will give minimal results

6-12 degrees (Adolescence) Will give 1/2 its full potential effects

12-18 degrees (Mature) Will give full effects as per its potential

18-24 degrees (Old) Will give limited effects

24-30 degrees (Near Death) Will give minimal effects if any

For Even signs – Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn & Pisces

0-6 (Near Death)

6-12 (Old)

12-18 (Mature)

18-24 (Adolescent)

24-30 (Near Dead)

These are not to be taken too literally but liberally.

What it implies is that planets 12-18 degrees or more towards the center of a sign is deeply colored as per the indications of that sign and hence will give those results strongly. A planet more towards the corner of a sign (Rashi) will tend to blend into the previous or next sign and hence not deeply colored as per that sign. Mathematically a planet at 15 degrees is right at the center of the sign and hence most ‘colored’ with the characteristics of that particular sign.

(IV) Residential Strength

Slightly more advanced of a concept but still easy enough to mention here.

When a horoscope is made, there is a Rising sign which is called the Ascendant or ‘Lagna’. This will be one of the 12 signs of course but the lagna as per the birth time will have an exact degree in that sign from 0 to 30 somewhere. Note this degree. This becomes the most effective point of each bhaav for all the signs.

Example Capricorn rises in ascendant at 20 degrees. Now Aquarius will be the 2nd house. But the 20th degree of Aquarius will give the exact center of the 2nd bhaav which is of money, wealth, family, speech, eating habits etc. (as you know from the earlier articles)

When a planet in a sign is sitting exactly of 20 degrees for this example, it will have 100% residential strength and give strong effects of that Bhaav. Plus or Minus 5 degrees from this of the range of 15 to 25 degrees, the planet still remains strong. Beyond that, the strength in the bhaav goes down by each degree. When the planet is at 4 degrees in a sign in the above case, it has actually gone into the previous Bhaav. So in the above example say a planet is at 2 degrees in Aquarius. Now even though that sign is in the 2nd Rashi (sign) it is actually in the 1st Bhaav (which in this example will extend from 5 degrees in Capricorn to 5 degrees in Aquarius.

If this is a bit complex right now, just worry about the first paragraph and not too much about the Bhaav movement concept called as ‘Chalit’ in astrology

This factor is VERY important when you look at a planet in any bhaav.

(V) Shadbala

Translated to English as the 6 fold strength. This is a comprehensive method of Quantifying a planets strength in astrological units called as RUPAS. Rupas follow a sexagesimal system with 1 Rupa = 60 VIRUPAS

The calculation has 6 main categories. Each category can have as much as 10 sub categories implying the calculation actually looks at more than 50 different characteristics in the underlying planet. The calculation is highly mathematical and detailed but aims at Quantifying each planets Total Power or strength. After the mathematical number is arrived at, there is a Cutoff for each planet. If the planet makes the Cutoff, it is strong enough to give its promised results, if not then it is weak. Each planet has a different cutoff. Example for Mercury it is 7 Rupas, for Moon it is 6 Rupas. So if one has Mercury at 8 Rupas, they have a Mercury at 114% when 100% means adequate strength.

The actual calculation and its logic is way beyond the scope of an online blog and this early on in a student’s stage. None the less, this is a vital component which can sometimes give counter-intuitive results as a debilitated planet can actually have a high Shadbala and vice-versa.

JHora software and many others mathematically do these calculations for you. But beware, there is errata in them. I am in touch with the author and longtime friend of JHora software in fixing some of them. Still it will give you a good estimate.

One has to be again careful not to rely on this completely, especially before a detailed understanding on the components and calculations behind Shadbala. It should be used as one of the many shades of strength or weakness a planet possesses.

(VI) Nakshatra Placement

As we have 12 signs (30 degrees each) we have 27 Asterisms or Nakshatras (13 degrees and 20 minutes each) or 13.33 degrees each. They are ruled by Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn & Mercury (first 9) and then 10 to 18 again by the same lords (in that given order) and 19 to 27 likewise again.

Hence each planet rules 3 Nakshatra each placed equidistant from each other.

The Nakshatra in which Moon is placed at birth is to be noted as the Birth Nakshatra.

Planets sitting in the 3rd, 5th and 7th Nakshatra from it will be weak and tend to give negative results. Planets in the 2nd, 6th and 9th will give Positive and strong results whereas planets in 1st, 4th and 8th will tend to give neutral to slightly positive results.

Example birth is Sun Nakshatra. So make Sun as Nakshatra 1

Moon is now Nakshatra 2, Mars is Nakshatra 3 etc. Those planets in the Nakshatra of Mars, Jupiter and Mercury (because they will be the 3rd, 5th and 7th) Nakshatras will be deemed weak or ineffective and will not give positive or strong results.

Detailed analysis and explanation is again beyond the scope of this discussion at this stage.

There are many other factors to be seen while determining the overall strength of a planet in addition to the top 6 factors mentioned above. However concepts like ‘Ashtakvarga’ (positioning relative to 8 important points), Divisional Strength etc. are too complicated for discussion here for a beginner in this art and hence diverted for now.

However one can download the Free software JHora and start looking at many of the factors mentioned above to get a good feeling of their signs, houses, planets and their strengths or lack thereof.

  1. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Is Residential Strength “Sthaana bala”? Asking since Sthaana bala is part of Shadbala.
    Thank you.

    • VS says:

Sthaana bala is one component the 6 main categories of shadbala (shad = 6) bala = power. Sthana bala is further divided into many sub categories. You can google these up, you will find a lot of literature on it if you wish to know the details

  2. Varun says:

Hello Vivekji! – Please suggest if planets moving to their natal position good for their functional and general significations. For instance, Jupiter will be transiting Virgo in August this year. Virgo is my 4th house and Jupiter is sitting there with Saturn in the natal chart. Virgo is not the best sign for Jupiter to sit in but 4H is. The standard dictum is Jupiter tends to expand the house he sits in and his aspects are generally good. So does it mean that this transit could help professionally ? Also, I believe Dashas and transits have to agree for any outcome to come true. Please suggest.

    Thanks for your time

    • VS says:

Planets moving to the natal positions intensify the effects of the planet in the basic horoscope. Good or Bad, the result is amplified, especially if the dasa of the involved planet is running

Since jupiter, rahu, ketu and saturn are slow moving, their effect is stronger and felt longer term as opposed to the slower moving planets where the return happens more frequently and for shorter periods of time

dasa and basic horoscope is always most important. Transits will then synchronize to precipitate the good or bad events. Only transits by themselves can not give anything which the basic horoscope and the dasas dont promise themselves

      • Sundar says:

VS: “Transits will then synchronize to precipitate the good or bad events”. So for example if it is Jupiter Dasa, and if Jupiter is transitting the 2nd house, the 2nd, 6th, 7th, 11th significations kick in (good or bad depending on the natal strength of Jupiter and its transit parameters like if it conjuct with a malefic etc). Is my understanding correct?

        • VS says:

yes. also the transits of other planets will modify the good or bad of jupiter. jupiter is not acting alone

          • Sundar says:

How about Yogas? Are they also triggered by transits, or do some give effects forever?

          • VS says:

Initial triggering might happen during vital Saturn and Jupiter transits and good Dasia’s..later for life if togas are strong

  3. Moon says:

Question 1. A man have venus-ketu both at 24 degree in the sign of leo in the 5th house. This mean an unhappy married life. But because both planets are weak (old)….so this will have no effect. Right?

Question 2. I also have heard that when the degree of the ascendant is conjuncting the weak (old) planets…then it will have effect. Is this true?

    • VS says:

24 degrees is not old. If the ascendant degree is also close to 24 then a planet anywhere at the 24 degree mark becomes very strong
Venus and ketu together generally are not good for marriage but you have to see the strength of venus and more importantly the strengths and aspects on both the 7th house and its lord. Net result will dictate marriage happiness or lack of it

  4. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
For anybody born in Scorpio Rasi, the moon is debilitated; what is the effect of this placement in general? Also, supposing Mars is placed in Cancer, how does this affect the scenario due to the Rasi Parivartan? Thank you.

    • VS says:

if the parivartan is of 2 good houses – example 5th and 9th then the effects are good. If the parivartan involves a dusthana – 6th, 8th or 12th then the effects are not good.

even if effects are good due to good houses, some negative effects and blood related disorders can occur as both planets are debilitated and when a planet is deb and its depositor is also debilitated, it is a highly negative situation

  5. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Re: Baaladi avasta, supposing a planet is in infant stage, yet + or – 2 degrees from the ascendant, how does that work out?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

its residential strength in the house will be high due to closeness from bhaav Madhya. hence it will strongly give its effect of the bhaav (in this case the 1st bhaav)

however the color of the planet (which comes from which sign it is in) is not very deeply colored in this scenario unless it is same sign in navamsa (virgottam). So for example if it is Jupiter at 29 degrees in virgo. Its color is not fully virgo as its in the boundary of virgo. however since its virgottam also, the color will remain strong and if its within 2 degrees of the bhaav Madhya, it will give strong results related to that bhaav

      • Sundar says:

        Sri VS:
Since you mentioned virgottam, I’d like to ask: Is there a concept of Virgottam of ascendant? If yes, if asc is at 1 degree and the ascendant itself is virgottam (in d-1 and d-9, ascendant is capricorn), what is your take?

        Thank you.

        • VS says:

lagna virgottam gives strength to the horoscope. the ruler of lagna becomes most important. if it is ill placed, the negativity doubles and if well placed, the strength doubles

          • Vasu says:

            Sir,
What about Rasi vargottama ? I have same Rasi (Makara) in both Rasi chart and Navamsa. Rasi lord (Saturn)is in Libra with Venus and in Navamsa in his own house (Capricorn).
            Thank you

          • VS says:

That’s very good in the described situation. Very strong raj yoga and rise in public life in the corporate world

  6. UBR says:

    Dear Shri VS:
I am not formally trained in Jyotish vidya. So kindly overlook any semantic defects.

My question relates to the discussion of Residential Strength and how to better interpret a given horoscope.

If (for instance), Lagna is at 26 deg Makara does it mean that a planet at 14 deg Meena should be treated as being in the 2nd Bhaav (as opposed to 3rd) with all associated 2nd Bhaav significations?

    Thanks,
    UBR

  7. UBR says:

    Thank you!

    To follow-up:
    1) Does a natal reading based on chalit significations ONLY (ignoring the underlying D1 significations) improve the odds of understanding a chart better?
    2) If we cannot completely ignore the underlying D1 significations, is there a rule of thumb weightage between Chalit and the underlying D1 significations that you have found to work in practlce?

    • VS says:

rasi placement shows the nature and dignity of a planet
chalit chart shows the bhaav related effects the planet is touching. Dasa wise chalit will gain more importance. For other purposes, rashi chart is more relevant

      however both are important

  8. Abhishek says:

    Hello V.S. Sir
How does Mahadasha/Antardasha affects the strength of a planet.
I have Virgo Lagana (24 deg 50′), Aries Moon Sign with following Mars and Saturn positions:
    Mars: 2nd House (26 deg 42′), Saturn: 10th House (24 Deg, 45′)
Currently i am undergoing Mars Mahadasha with Sat Antardasha.
Since both planets are closer to Lagna degree, they should be strong right?
Will there be compound malefic affect of both planets as both are malefic for Aries?
    Please advise

  9. Mrugesh says:

    Hi VS,

Thanks for sharing knowledge via Q&A.

How important is Baladi avastha for planets as their measure of strength?
As in say atmakaraka is a planet with highest longitude. So for most people it will be either Bala or meet avastha.
That is kind of counterintuitive as AK is like lagnesh and can not do any bad for person. Seems like by definition it will mean, AK is most weakest planet of the chart! Unless you have all the planets between 12 to 18 degrees.
However there is another problem. The specific exaltation degrees of planets can be any lower or higher degrees.
E.g., Moon is best exalted at 3 deg Taurus. And it is in dead avastha!! How can a dead Moon be fully exalted?!

What is your take on this?
In my opinion avastha have nothing to do with strength or capacity to give results. Good or bad. Have you found this in practice?

Thanks a lot for your reply in advance!
    Mrugesh

    • VS says:

      Hi Mrugesh

Balaadi avastha is just one aspect of strength. Like dozens of others things one has to see regarding strength
in real life, I have observed thousands of case studies where planets in the first or last 4 to 5 degrees can give excellent results

residential strength (distance of planet from bhav sensitive point) and conjunctions/ aspects on the planet, strength of depositor of planet in the rashi, nakshatra and navamsa etc….all these are very vital considerations and just only Balaadi avastha can not be the considered factor

  10. Uthayathasan says:

    Hi Vs
If a planet sitting in 7th house in rasi chart, it will aspect the 1st house. according to Bava chart its move to 6th house. So Now this planet aspect 12th house or 1st house.

    • VS says:

it will affect both. However the phalit effects of planet in its dasas will be on 6-12 axis. but the planet will also affect health and personality (1st bhaav significations) albeit less strongly that if it were not moving in the chalit chart

  11. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
If Ketu is debilitated in the 5th house (Gemini) does it do more or less harm due to the deb’tn?

    • VS says:

any debilitated planet, when not canceled, does harm to the house it sits in mostly and secondly the houses it owns and then the houses in aspects

  12. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
For a Leo asc, when the lord is conjuct Rahu in the 10th, is there anything to be said about a solar eclipse happening in Leo?

    • Sundar says:

VS, is it true that it is better that the Dusthana lords be weak? What happens when, for e.g., Moon or Jupiter is the lord if that is true?

    • VS says:

you will know soon if you are referring to trump
the dasa and other transits have to be seen. Transit should not be seen from just moon, but also from lagna and arudha lagna and with respect to natal planets

  13. Sudhir Iswaravaka says:

    Namaste
If a planet is a malefic in the chart and it’s Shadbala is more than the required strength, how are the effects to be read. Will they be more malefic in nature concerning that planet during its Sasha or since it has good Shadbala, will it make the planet tone down its malefic effects.
    Thankyou

    • VS says:

depends on where they sit. any malefic planet if own house and having high bal will do good also but if it is stronger than the good planets of the horo then total effect is bad

  14. SJ says:

“planets in 1st, 4th and 8th will tend to give neutral to slightly positive results”. This would mean moon will never give strong results, could you elaborate.

On a semi-related topic, I am trying to understand the relationship of nakshatra lord and rasi lord. Venus, Saturn, and Mercury nakshatras are all placed in enemy/neutral signs and they all lie within the sign fully. No crossover. On the other hand Sun, Mars and Jupiter nakshatra occur on the boundary of signs (one sign is the enemy and the other a friend). I understand the math behind it but not the meaning. If you could elaborate it would be helpful.

For example, Saturn in Leo rashi is not comfortable as it considers Sun to be its enemy, however if its nakshatra lord is Venus does it lessen the discomfort.

    Thanks

    • VS says:

from a nakshatra perspective, what you have to look at is the what kind of nakshatra is it from the Moon. So the 3, 5 and 7th nakshatras from moon are harmful, others are good. secondaly see if the owner of the nakshatra is functional malefic or benefic and where its placed. take Capricorn ascendant, moon becomes a maraca and functionally neutral. If moon is bright and sitting exalted in the 5th house, she will likely give very good results in general (Kendra lord in kona and exalted and bright)
now say Saturn is sitting in virgo in moon nakshatra. In this case Saturn though inimical to moon, will not give bad results because moon is strong and benefic and hence any planet it deposits in its house or nakshatra will be benefited.

rashi is most important then nakshatra and navamsa. do not reverse this order or you will always go wrong

      • SJ says:

My main questions was related to relationship of planet (P), rashi lord (RL) and nakshatra lord (NL).
So there are 3 relationship: P-RL, P-NL, and RL and NL. P-RL is the most important. The question is what is the second most important relationship?

If it is RL-NL, then a weak RL (mercury) could be supported by strong NL (moon) who considers RL his friend. Similary, a weak RL and could be opposed by a strong NL who considers RL its enemy and support the planet differently (In this case the third relationship is in play). In case, where both are strong is relationship of P-RL weakened due RL and NL relationship.
There are three options to proceed: (1) We could take compound relationship to make RL-NL relationship a variable for various charts, (2) We could consider the third relationship to determine it effects, or (3) RL is strong no need to consider NL and NL is only for fine tuning.

If it is P-NL relationship, then Moon’s relation with Saturn gains precedence over Mercury-Moon relationship and this changes the way we view the chart.

Sorry for taking too much of your time.

        Thanks,

        • VS says:

Here is the bottomline, as you dive in more and more in the Ganit fashion, you will lose the escence of astrology. Keep in mind that computers can do all the Ganit (Math) and can predict nothing.

relation with rashi lord is most vital and will supercede all other relationships. Rest the only way to learn is to look at 100 horoscopes and note down the results systematically. You will answer your own questions in that manner if you do so…try it!

          • SJ says:

As step 1, I am trying to understand my horoscope but I cannot decipher correctly. I tried variations in dasa seed (janma nakshatra and 5th star) to check which matches better with events. Also, I tried taking different ayanamsa (one recommended by JHora author, SSS). The pushya-pakha seems to match better but really not sure if I am applying my understanding of planets, rashi lords, and bhava are correct.

            Thanks for you input.

  15. Harich C. says:

I want to know, whether Awasthas of planets change in life time (Ex. Infancy changes into Adolescence or Mature) If Yes, How much time is taken by each planets to change their Awasthas. Or they remain at the same place life long.
I am Libra and I have Infancy Awasthas ( Balyaawastha). Will it shift to the next level or to the next in near future?
I am very much worried as an astrologer told me about it and its effects are very slow in life like promotion in life and childbirth ( I am unmarried just now).
Please respond, I am very thankful and grateful to you.

    • VS says:

any planet at any avastha or location will not change in your life, unless you are reborn again which is obviously not going to happen in your present life
that said, little knowledge is dangerous. avasthaas dont dictate everything about a planet, just 5% of it perhaps. So relax.

  16. Sundar says:

Vivek, If a planet is sitting in its own house and is deeply combust is it capable of guarding the significations of the house better than if it were not sitting in own house? Example, Cancer asc, Mercury direct in 12th with sun and combust. Mercury is very strong and Sun is strong as well; does that also affect Mercury’s ability to protect the 12th?

    • VS says:

typically it will cause intense damage to the particular bhaav

in night time births (sun weak relatively) this effect is reduced. If mercury own house but retrograde, then no damage at all and mercury remains very strong. also for mercury in direct motion only till upto 3 degrees will it really be combust, rest is minor

  17. BR says:

    Hi VS,

What’s the impact of a debiliated or weak ascendant in general during its MD? For instance, Ronald Reagan had debiliated Saturn and he became president of US during its MD.

There is disagreement regarding what his ascendant is. But, whatever it is he became the president of US by a landslide in both ’80, ’84 during Saturn MD. (I think it might be Aquarius, which would move Saturn into 3rd an Upachya house, given that he was the oldest president and Upachya houses improve over time.)

More generally, in the case of Saturn which is debiliated in Aries and agitated in Scorpio is it helpful if Mars aspects Saturn? Typically, a planet aspecting its own house is good, but Saturn treats Mars as it’s enemy, so it’s unclear what its impact will be.

If it’s just one-way aspect e.g. Mars on Saturn then should we look at relationship from Saturn’s side (enemy) or Mars’s side (neutral)?

    Thanks!

    • VS says:

don’t know about Ronald Regan’s horoscope
in general a planet aspecting its own house signifies that the house is going to be more activated than normal

if the planet is in a friendly or neutral or exalted sign, its aspect will show positive activation of the house. if the planet is itself debilitated or weak as in being in an imical sign, then its aspect on its own sign will create problems to that house

      • BR says:

thanks! That answers part of my question. But, what is the impact on the MD of the planet in the aspected house?

For example, take Mars in Leo (a friendly sign), aspecting Scorpio which has Saturn sitting in it. So, based on what you mentioned the house that Scorpio owns will be activated more than normal in the native’s life.

But, what can we say about the MD of Saturn? Given that Saturn is agitated in Scorpio, will the MD be better or worse than without Mars’s aspect?

Do we have to take into account the compound friendship between Mars and Saturn? But, from whose side? As they are enemy or neutral based on where you look from…

        Thanks!

        • VS says:

its not good or bad …not binary
mars will protect its house and saturn will damage scorpio as well as 3 more signs (aspects)
now the signs whose lords are stronger than saturn will protect their own significations/ houses, others will not be able to

          • BR says:

            Thanks, that makes sense!

          • Sundar says:

Vivek, since Mars is 10th from Saturn it becomes a neutral to Mars. The damage to Scorpio would not be there I think. If a planet cannot become neutral in a rasi what use would a temporary friend be to the chart? Since it is in a neutral house, it’s aspects would also be neutral..Kindly comment.

          • VS says:

in my opinion, an agitated natural and functional malefic in this case saturn will damage the houses it aspects. However if the houses have other benefics and their owners strong, the damage will be less

  18. KRS says:

    Dear VS:
Is the effect of combustion weaker in water and earth signs than in air and fire signs?
    Thank you

    • VS says:

I think combustion is weaker at night time in general and also when Sun itself is weak (e.g. libra)
Otherwise it just depends on the degrees of separation. Beyond 8 degrees from Sun, combustion is just namesake if any

  19. Aditya says:

    Respected Sir,
    1. Who will dictate – Rashi swami or nakshtra in that rasi. E. G. Rahu is in swati, Libra or Jupiter is in Taurus for whom Venus is the rasi swami.

    2. How important is PD – pratyantar dasa. E. G. Sun MD – rahu ad is not good. Venus joins in PD. Can he help in easing the tensions or control rahu related to that house.

    3. If Jupiter transits house 9 or 11 could he give results related to that house. E. G. H9 is empty or H11 is occupied by Venus, would Jupiter face trouble.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards, Aditya

    • VS says:

      1. rasi swami for any planet is the lord of the rashi they are placed in. so if rahu in libra, venus is its rashi lord and so it is for Jupiter that is in Taurus

      2. pratyantar is important as the actual dispenser of the results. one has to learn to use dasas with transits, especially transits of slow moving planets like rahu, ketu, Saturn and Jupiter

      3. no idea about trouble or what you are referring to. but wherever Jupiter transits, it will give results of both the house it transits and also any planet that sits in it. example if Jupiter transits in Libra with Sun in it for Capricorn ascendant, then Jupiter will give results of 10th house as well as 8th bhaav (that sun rules)

      • Aditya says:

        Thank you VS.

One doube on results – if a planet is rasi swami for more than one sign, it will give results for both the houses (Mercury is rasi swami for virgo and gemini) or Mars for Aries & Scorpio.

In 10th house, 9th lord Budha is good, but as 6th lord, creates problems. It is within 2* from Sun. During Sun-Mercury period will the latter give 50-50 results.

Whether your MD or AD (good /bad) does anyone dilute its effects during the progression period.

        Please share. Regards, Vh

        • VS says:

every planet will ofcourse give results of both signs it rules, but more of its MOoltrikona sign
a planet within 6 degrees of sun is combust and will faily to fully protect the houses it rules in the chart

          • AJ says:

Dear VS, So for Aries Lagna, if Sun and Mercury are sitting in the first house within 3 degrees, does that mean that due to mercury being combust, its significations of 3rd and 6th house will be lost – i.e mercury’s bad effects will be gone and it will become a positive planet?

          • VS says:

functionally the good effects of sun can dominate in such a situation
Mercury effects will be burnt, meaning there can be health issues related to the head/ brain and nerves/ nervous system. There will be skin diseases along with allergies and a hot headed temperament. Mind will be quick and restless

  20. Vishwajit says:

    Dear VS,

If Mars is in Libra and Venus is in Scorpio. Does this combination form parivartana yoga for Capricorn ascendent.
Does this combination also indicate support during the dasa or bhukti period.
    Please share.

  21. Vishwajit says:

    Dear VS,

To the above post by Aditya you have mentioned about MTS and the result if it belongs there.
Similarly can we use the Kendra 1-4-7-10 for results. If sun MD in Tula and Ketu AD in Aries or saturn in cancer.
Can you please share some literature on Ashtakavargha and other aspects associated, and how to read it.

    Regards, Vh

    • VS says:

Ashtakvarga is more of a transit principle only and should not really be applied for the basic chart analysis in my opinion
idea is simple, the more the number of points a planet has out of maximum 8, the better its results while transiting that sign

also total bindus in any house average around 28. If more than that, the sign is generally a strong one for transits and vice versa if below 28

      • Varun says:

        Good day Sir,

Just one question reg Ashtakvarga, i am passing through Sade Sathi= my twelfth house (Dhanasu Rasi) SAV 25 and 1st House Makara) SAV 35 that means when Saturn moves in to 1st house i will get good results. BAV of Saturn in 12th and 1st house are 2.
        Please clarify. Thank you.

        • VS says:

certainly will be better than saggi as own house, non dusthana as well as a high SAV score. but also depends on dasas, yogas activated etc

          • Varun says:

            Good day,
In the above case, if the first house (Makara Moon sign) happens to be sixth house from Leo Lagna what will be the sade sathi has it happens to be dustana 6the house from Leo Lagna. Also to be noted Saturn is in Libra (exalted)
            Thank you.

          • VS says:

so as you know, you will have to look at the combined impact of various factors, both from moon and lagna for any transit

  22. Baskar says:

    Dear VS ji,

I have a question about Marana Karaka sthana. If a planet is placed in Marana Karana sthana ( ex. sun in 12th or Mars in 7th), does it mean that the planet is dead and will not give any positive or negative results?

If it is functional benefic or malefic, its aspects remain neutral? It neither give good not bad effects?

    Please let me know.

    • VS says:

No, the planet is not dead and say mars in 7th house. its not the houses that mars owns that will be damaged…its the 7th house representations like marriage and relationships etc

      • BR says:

        Hi VS,

I have seen you mention several times about mars in 7th as maran karak and bad for relationships/marriage. On the other hand, you mention in the lesson on Mars that if Mars is well placed in 7th house e.g. in 1,4,5,8 rashis then it is not bad for marriage i.e. weak manglik dosha.

So, which of these is true? Is Mars in 7th in say Leo a bad position just by itself for marriage/relationships?

        • VS says:

mars is always bad in 7th house. however if in own sign or exalted or in cancer, then it makes either ruchak mahapurush yoga or neecha bhang yoga. either way the venom decreases and in such cases, the manglik dosha deactivates to a large extent.

  23. Ravi says:

    Hi Vs,

Have seen a leo asdentant kundali in which its 5th lord that is jupiter is in 9th house and 9th lord mars is in 5th house interexchange between lord of 5th and 9th lord..she has 2 sons and both of them are very famous and rich can a child’s destiny be seen through mothers kundali and does 9th and 5th lord exchange cause a rajayoga for kids since 5th house is putrabhav..

    • VS says:

5th and 9th interchange is always a potent raj yoga. that is the only thing that can be generalized. other things are individual horoscope specific

  24. Arya says:

    Dear VS,,

Which mars is better..exalted mars in 5th house(it being in 3rd house from its own house bhavatbhavam) or debilitated mars in 5th house(being like a yogakaraka planet for peices ascendant and being in ninth house from its own house bhavatbhavan).

    • VS says:

‘better’ is subjective. Every person will define better differently. No answer to a generic sweeping question as each horoscope, yogas are different and no planet including Mars ever acts alone

  25. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir goodmorning
Can a graha become yogada by mere ownership of lagna ghati lagna and hora lagna..second question does placement of functional benefic in 12th house give strength to lagna?

    • VS says:

planets in any bhaav or immediately surrounding a bhaav that is 2nd or 12th to it…will impact the house…and hence a functional benefic in 12th can help the lagna, especially if it is also a generic benefic

  26. Rahul says:

    Thanks sir
Can a graha become yogada on the basis of mere ownership of lagna GL HL ?i am confused about definition of yogada as i have read that a grha must have drishti over GL HL to become yogada

    • VS says:

the drishtis considered in this concept of Jamini are rashi drishtis and not grah drishtis although some assume grah OR rashi drishti and hence consider either of the drishtis. A planet either owning a bhav or having a rashi drishti on it is considered in context of Yogada concept

  27. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
Mesha lagna lord sits combust in the 6th (neutral placement due to PE+TF) with debiliated Venus, 4th lord moon. Mars is combust but virgottam . Dispositor Mercury is in 7th (marana karaka sthaana). Rahu sits in Scorpio.
    I have 3 questions:
    1. Does chance of litigation due to property (4th lord) and enemies go up since Venus spoils the house and Mars is combust?
2.Does virgotam improve Mars dignity or does it get worse due to Mercury’s state?
    3. While Rahu is not good for the 8th, does it affect the 6th house as well?

    Thanks.

    Sundar

    • VS says:

Mars is in an extremely bad situation in this case. depending on how far from bhaav Madhya it will give litigation as well as health/ injury issues and intestinal trouble. If Saturn aspects or trinal to virgo then surgeries (multiple) in life time. Virgottam makes it worse but implies that it is in the last 3.3 degrees of virgo and hence in chalit chart, it might be moving to 7th depending on the lagna degree

  28. Soba says:

Sir,Could you kindly explain me how planets happy or bad in sign or house.?.Hope you will look into this and reply me.Many thanks with Pranam!!!!!!!

    • VS says:

a planet in its exalted, own or friendly sign is generally happy unless it is combust or close to an inimical planet. Else not.

  29. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
Re: planets sitting in the 3,5,7 nakshatra lords from Moon (Example Moon in Aswini means any planet sitting in nakshatras ruled by Sun, Mars, Jupiter..please correct if wrong) and their weakness, how much is this a factor from your experience?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

It is an important factor, although not more important than the actual rasi placement, dignities and yogas (good or bad)
so you can call this as a secondary factor. Also keep in mind that even if say a planet is in the worst – 7th nakshatra or niddhana nakshatra. Now say this is ruled by venus and venus is in own house in a Kendra as a yoga karaka in the chart. Then hardly anything wrong can be expected. Yet if malefics like Rahu transit this nakshatra in their own MD or AD, they will cause some problems. But in this case the problems might not be severe

      • Sundar says:

        Vivek, just to clarify:
Quoting: “Rahu transit this nakshatra in their own MD or AD”
You meant “Rahu transits any nakshatra that has the same lord as the 7th nakshatra” or am I mistaken?

        Thanks again.

  30. s.mahesh says:

mars is at 29′ degrees is at gemini..for a cancer ascendant which is at 21′ degrees exactly. the position of mars(RETOGRADE) have to be considered at gemini or cancer sign.As you said +5 or -5 formula. It should be considered to be situated or moved to cancer. If it was at 29′ degrees.is it a near death planet and it wont do good sir

    • VS says:

if ascendant at 21 degrees, then 21 degrees in each house is the center of that house. so any planet within 5 to 8 degrees of that center will give strong results of that particular bhaav

      • Baskar says:

        Dear VS ji,

        In the above example:

if a planet having high Shad bala is placed very far from Bhava Madhya

        Vs

another planet with low Shad bala is placed close to the Bhava Madhya

Which one will give strong results during its dasha period?

        Please let me know.

        • VS says:

generally a planet that is closer to bhaav madhya has the ability to give results of that bhaav easily. ofcourse a very strong planet will exert influence from a bit far also, but there is no clear cut formula. One has to learn with experience. a planet activates the bhaav it is placed in and hence if a planet is placed in 9th and the 9th lord is exalted and strong, then in its MD the planet is going to give great results in general as the 9th bhaav is activated and its owner is strong

  31. Ajay says:

    Hi VS,

For which ascendant gaja keshari yoga gives best results among Virgo, scorpio or pieces since in these ascendant none of the lords are lords of 6,8,12houses..Is it for Pieces ascendant since it is ascendant lord and 10th lord and moon 5th housr lord..and does a gaja keshari yoga for pieces ascendant having Jupiter in 4th house of gemini and moon in 7th house of virgo improve the kundali strenght.

    • VS says:

the purity and strength of the yoga is vital
GajKesari is otherwise very good for all watery ascendants – cancer, scorpio & Pisces

  32. Vinay says:

Does a planet give good results if placed in own nakshatra but in bad house or sign..and what about planets placed in own nakshatra and good house..have heard rahu in own nakshatra is not a good placement

    • VS says:

The Bhaav and rashi are most important followed by conjunctions and aspects. then comes ownerships of houses and finally placement in nakshatra and divisional charts

  33. Sundar says:

    VS:
For a Taurus asc, how does Rahu do in the 5th? Since Virgo is MK, how does it behave?

    • VS says:

it isnot bad by itself, although might give adoption or otherwise illegitemate children. but functionally is good if aspects on it are good and mercury placed well

  34. Aditya says:

Can you please share your views on 9th Jupiter transit from moon for pisces happening in October 2018. Also the aspect part.

  35. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
Can exchange of sign cause nichabganga?i meant to ask if mars in capricorn and saturn in aries is combination for nichabhang of saturn?

  36. Rahul says:

    Sir
Does special aspects of jupiter mars and saturn apply in divisional chart?

    • VS says:

they do. however in divisional charts, I dont emphasize in looking at aspects much. Just the rashi of occupancy is most important and the equivalent rashi in the D1 is important.

  37. s.mahesh says:

    Sir,

mars at gemini for cancer ascendant is strong or week

  38. Om says:

    Vs,

Exalted retrograde saturn in 10th house of libra for capricon asdentant getting debilitated in navamsa chart would such a saturn be capable of giving any good results

    • VS says:

yes ofcourse why not. any planet when under the right influence of other planets can give positive results. also in this case if venus is in aries (it can not be in libra as saturn is retrograde and hence far away from sun) if venus and saturn are opposite to each other within say 1 to 5 degrees, then a powerful raj yoga will result

  39. Anish says:

    Hello VS,

In Ashtakvarga table if some1 has 32points in 10th house, 39 in 11th house, 28 in 12th house and 30 in 1st house does it mean anything..because a renowned astrologer had said that if 11th house has more points than 10th and 12th house less than 11th and 1st more than 12th and all of them more than 30is very good combination can u please tell is there any such thing like that because have never heard any such thing bedore except 28 of more points in a house where planet sits give good results

  40. Sasha says:

My Ascendent is Cancer 23degrees, I have Virgo in my third house, with mercury 16degrees and sun 19 degrees sitting in..What shall I expect from heat?

    • VS says:

i dont know, one has to see the whole chart. mercury is very strong here and sun is feeble. however mercury is slightly combust too but since a night time birth, that might not hamper much

  41. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
If a planet sits in a fully FM’s house, does it give bad results? Example, for Taurus Lagna, Yogakkara Saturn sits in the 8th (already bad placement) or 11th? Is the potential of a FB reduced?

    • VS says:

if the rasi is a neutral sign and other wise shadbal of the planet is strong, then it will still give good results of what it owns, espeically if the FM sign is like 11th as the gain karakatva will kick in too. however over the effects can be bad, especially if the FM planet is much stronger in the chart that the planet being deposited

  42. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
When Mercury is conjuct Ketu, Mercury is supposed like a malefic, but Ketu absorbs Mercury’s karakatvas and expands it. Does Ketu absorb Mercury’s as a benefic? Would this depend on if Ketu or Mercury is more close to madhya bhaav than the other?

    • VS says:

generally mercury can become slightly defective. general effects are only 10% as an estimate. meaning if someone has mercury as a functional benefic, example gemini, taurus or virgo etc and mercury is say own house and ketu conjuncts or trines it, it will expand the functional power of mercury which will make the already strong mercury even stronger. the closer the degrees, the better ofcourse

  43. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
How do we see philanthropy in a chart? Do we see it how/where the 12th lord is placed? How about the 9th lord’s placement (wisdom = charity)?

    Thank you

    • VS says:

connection between 1, 9 and 12th. usually when 12th accompanies strong raj yogas caused by 1,2,5 and 9 and the lords or 2,5 and 9 are stronger than 12th. jupiter is karaka for philathronpy and hence its involvement will exaggerate the combination

      • Sundar says:

In Bill Gates chart, lord of 12th and 5th (Venus) is in a Yoga with the lord of the 9th (exalted Saturn), 2nd house lord is strong and aspected by Lagna lord Mercury and Laba lord Mars. Mars and Mercury itself form a Vosi yoga (charitable) !!!!!!.

  44. Jayathirth. says:

Sir, I just have a doubt. My ascendant is scorpio and it is in 19 degrees. My lagna lord mars, 5th lord jupiter and 11th lord mercury are in virgo. My Mars is in chitra Nakshatra 2nd pada, in 29 degrees. Does it mean my mars will give 12th bhava results? Mars is also in varghothama position, so will it give 11th bhava results or 12th bhava results?

    • Jayathirth. says:

Also, pls clarify, mars in 11th house for scoprio ascendant conjunct with mercury and jupiter in virgo is good or bad.

      • VS says:

        1) no such thing as only good or only bad in astrology like in real life
        2) only a few planets without details on degrees, divisionals and bals etc is specualation

having said that Jupiter and mars combining will give yoga even though both are not placed well in the sign of virgo. if these 2 are closer to each other in degrees than mercury then better. dhan yoga is likely to exist in either situation

    • VS says:

mars will give 11th results. will be good for career and earnings but bad for health

      • Jayathirth says:

Thank you sir. My Mars degree is 28 and My jupiter degree is 24. Jupiter is mars star chitra -1st pada and mars is in chitra -2nd pada. My ascendant is scorpio, rahu in 1st house, saturn in aquarius(retro) , ketu in taurus(7th house), venus in 9th house(cancer), sun and moon in Leo(10th house), Mars, Mercury and jupiter in virgo. I am also an astrologer, only thing which i dont understand is, am currently running through moon mahadasa, i have read in certain texts that when 9th lord and 10th lord conjuncts each other it gives rise to Dharma Karmadhipati yoga. Am born on chaturdashi thithi not on amavsya. Moon is in purvaphalguni 1st pada and sun is uttaraphalguni 1st pada, moon conjuncts jupiter in 9th house in navamsa, and my navamsa lagna is Sagittarius with sun(atmakaraka) placed in sagittarius, jupiter placed in leo in navamsa. Moon jupiter conjuncts in navamsa, despite that my moon dasha is bad. Moon is 16 degrees and Scorpio lagna is in 19 degrees, even though bhagyadipathi moon’s degree close to lagna degree, there are no good results, and some people say since venus is in 9th house, yoga will start after marriage, is it true, sir?

        • VS says:

I can not say much as it becomes speculation with limited data. I also don’t give personal readings.

what I can say is that the way you have described it, moon is dark and has zero directional strength being in the 10th bhaav. Also moon deposits venus which is a functional malefic for scorpio as well as rahu aspects the 9th bhaav of moon which is a strong enemy of moon and debilitated in the lagna. due to these conditions, moon dasa could be average, although I doubt that it will be negative by itself. rahu in lagna will create discontentment in life. Jupiter and mercury combination in a mercury sign will give astrology knowledge and in general good writing/ communication skills as well

  45. Ramsingh says:

    Hey,
If in a chart of virgo Lagna…sun and ketu in 1st house of virgo and rahu in 7th house of pieces becomes vargottam in navamsa with rahu in 1st house of pieces lagna and sun and ketu in 7th house of virgo all in good dignity so would these 3planet give harmful results since these are malefic planets…and rahu and ketu getting vargottam in kendra is good or bad.

    • VS says:

cant reply to such specific questions without the full details. In any case the situation described is not good for the married life as well as health but depends on strength and placement of mercury and jupiter as well

  46. Sharath says:

    Dear VS Sir,

If Mars is in Capricorn (28 degrees), then from exaltation & digbala point of view, it’s very powerful. But from degree point of view, its dead. Isn’t this contradictory? How can the planet be both dead and powerful? Can you please advise how to understand this situation?

Thank you for your guidance in advance!

    • VS says:

it is in deep exaltation yes. Digabali or not depends on the lagna. if aries lagna then mars in Capricorn has full digabala and for libra ascendant it has nearly 0 digabala in Capricorn

the dead or not is called baaladi avastha, which is just one of many types of avasthas (dignities) of planets. By no means is the planet dead usually. you have to see all this in a holistic fashion and can not pick and chose individual rules to apply in astrology

  47. Siva says:

    Hi VS

If mercury during transit is simultaneously combust and exalted ( virgo ), which effect should we give more weight ?

    regards

    Siva

    • VS says:

if combust while retrograde then no effect of retrogression
if combust while direct then it will lose it potency only within 3 to 4 degrees of sun. if degrees over 6 then no combustion effect

  48. Sundar says:

VS, what is the astrological word for Residential strength? It is not Sthaana bala for sure since Sthaana bala is part of Shadbala..Thanks.

  49. isha says:

    hi,

If in a female horoscope sun which is ascendant lord is placed in 7th house of aquarius but in chalit chart it goes to 6th house of capricon how is it mahadasa going to be since its in sign of its enemy saturn in both the houses(saturn is placed with yogakaraka mars in 5th house of saggi and jupiter in 9th house of aries)

    • VS says:

there are hundreds of things to see before concluding anything. However health issues are indicated as well as problems in relationships

  50. kabir says:

In aquarius ascendant if moon is exalted in 4th house and mars is debilitated in 6th house and venus debilitated in 8th house does it lead to cancellation of debilitation for any planet since mars is debilitated in moons house which is exalted and venus has exalted moon in its taurus house.

    • VS says:

cancellation of debilitation never fully happens till the debilitated planet itself is in a Kendra bhaav (1,4,7, 10)

  51. if Saturn is sitting in 17 degrees of Libra in the 3rd house for a Leo ascendant is it exalted? If yes, will it give good or bad results, how and in what capacity?

  52. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

Any planet placed in its zero dig bala position:

Will it become ineffective to produce good results even if functional benefic ( or ) produce adverse results..assuming those planets are not too strong ( or ) too weak in Shad bala etc.,?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much in advance.

    Pls let me know.

    • VS says:

the power certainly reduces. however it doesn’t mean that it becomes powerless completely. if otherwise it is in own or exalted sign in a Kendra and aspected well, it will remain a powerful entity in the chart. dig bal is one of the criterias to see the power and not the only criteria ofcourse

  53. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Can Moon be combust? Full moon is when they are close. Does full moon not imply Moon is strong? I have heard the term that Moon becomes “dark” but not combust. What is the effect of this on the moon? What effect does this have on the moon as dispositor of a debiliated planet? E.g. Kumbha lagna, Sun and Moon in Aries, night time birth, Mars debilitated.

    • VS says:

yes as per original parasari school of thought, moon is combust upto 15 degrees on both side of sun. darkness is considered till about 72 degrees on both sides

      • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. In the above case (kumba lagna), the 6th lord Moon loses power due to combustion and its conjunction with the 7th may not do as much damage to a relationship than if it were not combust, yes?

        • VS says:

a planet when combust will first and foremost fail to fully protect the significations of the houses it rules in the chart, example if lagna lord is combust then health and general nature and overall success in life are all limited due to this factor etc.

          • Sundar says:

Since the 6th lord loses power and is sitting with the 7th, does the chance of separation become less ? Or can it lead to litigation and loss in a separation? The other significations of 6th will suffer of course, asking you to confirm.. Thank you.

          • VS says:

by itself 6th in 7th can bring separation and litigation. which one is stronger of the 6th and 7th will dictate final outcome. Also which bhaav and bhaav lords has better beneficial aspects will dictate results

  54. Varun says:

VSji – Will wearing a gemstone for the combust planet help, if the planet is otherwise well placed? Also, is the combust planet unable to protect all the functional significations or just the mool trikon ones?
I have my lagna lord (Mercury) retrograde, in rashi sandhi, and deeply combust in 5th house(Libra) with Sun.

  55. Suraj Vanjeeswaran says:

    Hello VS,

I have Jupiter lord of 5th house placed in 7th house aquarius(i.e. 27 degrees) in Mrithavastha for leo ascendant does it imply I would not get any good effects of this placement in my Jupiter Mahadasha/Antaradasha?

    Thanking You
    Suraj V

  56. KS says:

A planet which is 0-6 in an even sign is considered mrit and its MD will only be mediocre at best even if the planet is functional benefic. However, it is also said that a planet close to bhaav madhya is very potent during it’s MD.

But, the above two observations can be contradictory. For example, consider Saturn at 1 degree in Scorpio for an Aquarius ascendant. So, according to degree it’s mrit, but if the degree of ascendant is say 4 then it’s very close to bhaav madhya.

How do you reconcile these two? Is Saturn strong or weak in the above case? Assume temporary friendship with Mars- the depositor.

Will the saturn MD in the above case be potent or not?
(I know that it will depend on other placements and aspects etc…but just based on above info what will be the effect?)

    • VS says:

the real effect comes with experience. both statements are true in their own right
if you do 100 horoscopes and analyze them in a systematic manner…you will start to see how it works…sorry but no short cuts to that as there is no one size fits all explanation for me to provide

      • Sundar says:

From what I see, if the avasya bala (closeness to lagna) is good and the planet is involved in good yogas, it does give good results, if not very good. It could be minus 15% due to Mrityu bhaga, mrit due to 0-6 even sign or even if the house it lords over has a planet in marana karaka sthana. Example, Aqua lagna, Moon dasa (FM): Moon and Guru in 7th, Venus (yogakara) in 6th (MKSthaana), Mercury and Sun in 6th forming yogas. The gajakesari yoga is from lord of 6th and 11th (upachya) so the yoga improves with the dasa. My humble opinion from what I have absorbed from this site.

  57. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
    Asking for a quick clarification:
    1. If moon is in Ashwini, planets in Kritika, Mrigshira and Punarvasu will yield weak results.
    2. If moon is in Ashwini, planets in nakstras ruled by Sun, Mars and Jupiter will yield weak results.
Which of the above 2 is correct?

  58. Asena says:

    Dear VS,
Please could you point out the difference in the effect/s of the following Graha’s positions:

    – In a rashi of exaltation/mooltrikona, but on the verge between 2 bhavas (less than 1 degree)

    – In the middle of a bhaav , but on the verge of 2 rashis ( just prior to the rashi of debilitation, less than 1 degree)

Highly appreciate and thank you in advance.

    • VS says:

close to bhaav Madhya just means how strongly the planet impacts that bhaav regardless of exaltation etc

exaltation just shows the happiness level or dignity level of a planet which is now independent of how strongly it is impacting any given bhaav.

these are 2 separate things which should be kept separate in the mind to analyse the effects of any planet

  59. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
What is the impact of a planet on the bhava it is occupying if it has very high STHANA BAL?how much sthana bal is called appropriate for a planet?

  60. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Does Kendriadipati dosha gets reduced or go away if the planet is neech? The astrologer was saying that for Meena Lagna Guru in Makar makes the KD go away. I thought I could ask your opinion.

    • VS says:

by itself Kendradipathi dosha might not be a big issue in any case but jupiter being debilitated is certainly an issue

      • Sundar says:

VS, does does Guru have KD for a Meena Lagna? If that’s true all the dual rasi lagnas will have KD. There is also an opinion that ownership of 2 quadrants makes for KD. What does shastra say?

  61. Jayathirth says:

Sir, I have a doubt. My sun and moon is conjunct in leo in 10th house. My ascendant is scorpio. Sun is in Uttaraphalguni 1st Pada and Moon is in Purvaphalguni 1st Pada. I have read that sun and moon conjunction is not auspicious, having said that, does the 9th and 10th lord conjunction of sun and moon will bestow any good results? Lagna lord mars, Jupiter and Mercury are in 11th house. Moon’s Nakshatra Lord, venus is in 9th House. Pls clarify, whether sun and moon conjunction is good or bad for scorpio ascendants.

    • VS says:

sun and moon conjunction is not bad for scorpio ascendants, esepcially when happening in the 9, 10th bhaav. so in this case it is likely to give good results and can even give a career in government/ administration etc

  62. deepa says:

    Hello Sir,

Please clarify my doubt regarding the dignity of exalted jupiter in Capricorn lagna. It is exalted at 7 degrees in Pushya nakshatra, but the lagna degree being 24 degrees, it is in 6th house in chalit. Will this jupiter be considered malefic or benefic?

Will it give vipareet rajayoga-12th house lord exalted in 6th?

If moon is in saggitarius causing a parivartan yoga with jupiter, does this signify a malefic or benefic influence on marriage and 7th house significations?

    Many thanks!

    • VS says:

this jupiter will give a wise nature and even good looks and will cause more harm. might give a fat consitution and will destroy marriage almost completely and certainly

      • Sundar says:

        Hello VS:
        Is that because:
        1. An exalted 12th lord is in rasi parivartana with the 7th lord?
        2. The above plus 7th lord sitting 6th from itself?

#1 or #2 or combination of both?

        • VS says:

          both
12th lord by itself is always neutral functionally. however if itself gets strong, it will cause loss/ separation from the area it touches. on the other hand if the planets that touch it as stronger, then it will behave like them and increase their power as an additional mass

      • deepa says:

Thank you Sir! Would you be so kind to explain the rationale behind the destruction of marriage? Moon is in an exchange with an exalted 12th house lord but would it not also provide power to moon to protect its own 7th house significations?

Or one will see happy marriage in Moon mahadasha and destruction of marriage in Jupiter mahadasha? Please correct me if wrong. Or both the moon and jupiter mahadasha will have a similar affect on marriage, both being in exchange yoga?

        Regards,

        • VS says:

marriage will either not happen, not last or if it does last, it will be a big compromise – as in namesake marriage instead of a real bond

  63. VENU GOPAL B A says:

    Dear VS,

I have doubt regarding the degree of the lagna..the is with reference to video from kapiel (krs youtube channel) link for the video :
    youtube.com/watch?v=UmYutKUq-HE

He explains regarding lagna raising degree and planets degree within 3 degree with respect to lagna raising degree can give results good or bad… neglecting the avastha of planet in the degree 0-6 (Near Death)6-12 (Old)12-18 (Mature)18-24 (Adolescent)24-30 (Near Dead)

could you please reply on this topic

    • VS says:

I dont comment on views of any other astrologer. Everyone has their opinion and methods

As for what you are talking about, without looking at the video, what he is saying is that residential strength of the planet (distance from the middle of the bhaav) is more relevant than balaadi avastha of the planet.

      • Sundar says:

If I may, closeness to lagna degree is Avasya bala (remembering VS’s answer and please correct). If Lagna is 1 degree and a planet is at 18 degrees it has low avasya bala, is a mature planet, but it will give medium results. At 3 degrees, though it is dead, it will still give good if not excellent results. So the latter is preferable.
VS can comment on this as a general concept.

        • VS says:

Hello yes as a generic principle, the residential strength or Avasya bala is a highly important criteria to be considered always. This shows how intensely the planet is affecting that particular bhaav. Also if the planet is very close (within 3 degrees as an example) of the bhaav center, the planets full aspects example 3, 7 and 10 for saturn will also be strong on those bhaavs. Now strong does not mean good always. Example a badly placed malefic in a dusthana if close to the center of the bhaav will damage much more than one placed away. Strong means whatever is the promise of the planet manifests strongly in the dasas of that planet.

      • VENU GOPAL B A says:

        OK thank you VS

  64. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Can FB planets sitting weakly in a dusthana house be strengthened with a gem? E.g. Mithuna lagna, Budha sitting in the 8th with Saturn seated in 9th. My thinking is Budha’s added strength will help it partially if not fully overcome the ill-effects.

    • VS says:

in this case, I suggest gems only for generically benefic planets in addition to FB if the FB is in a dusthana. so perhaps only for planets like venus or jupiter or moon

for saturn or mars placed in a dusthana, only if they are yoga karaka for the ascendant and have no malefic conjunctions/ aspects on them, that too with caution and testing the gem out

  65. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For a Tula Lagna with yogkarak Saturn exalted and in parivartana with Venus in the 5th, I believe despite Saturn being in MKS, it will do well. What do you think?

  66. Kinja says:

Do u know anyone like you who have much experience and skills and do personal reading for free ?
    Thanks .

    • VS says:

not much different than looking for a surgeon who will do your root canal for free? if You think that would not be possible, not sure what makes astrologers different? Not that I ever charge or have charged, not sure why people expect free handovers
there is no free lunch in life. goodluck

  67. Hariharan says:

    Hello Sir,
    Greetings!
Wanted to know whether calculation of residential strength and nakshatra placement is enough excluding deeper calculations of shadbala for a planet in natal chart.

    • VS says:

hi there. residential strength is extremely important, that said it is not the only factor ofcourse. the yogas and avayogas a planet forms, shadbal, aspects, divisional placements etc all will have a say

  68. Ashish Kapur says:

    Dear Vivek Ji,

Does the Bhaav Chalit concept is applicable in derivative charts like D9, D10 etc. also; like in the kundli where the physical planets are placed i.e. D1.
Means if the lagna degrees are 4/5 or 10/11 or 22/23 or 28/29 etc. the bhaav for which analysis is being done can fall/overlap in 2 raashis as per lagna degrees.
    Eagerly awaiting your viewpoints Sir.

    With Most Respectful Regards
    Ashish

    • VS says:

mathematically it does apply yes. However firstly the time of birth has to be really rectified within a few seconds for divisional degrees to have much meaning. Secondly in divisionals, the rashi becomes more important than the bhaav. the rashi in any divisional shows the ‘color’ of the planet related to that aspect of life. example jupiter in libra in d10 will show that jupiter is related to venus in terms of career/ job/ status. so when the 2 dasas operate at level 1&2 or 2&3, some career related focus will remain in life

  69. Rohan Sharma says:

    Hello vivek sir,
I am a cancer ascendant with ascendant at 27 degrees
Mars is in own 10th house at 29 degrees..so is it dead?will it give any results?any remedies

  70. Dani says:

    Hello VS,

Does Parivarthana yoga applied on D10 chart too?

    Regards,
    Dani

  71. Marco says:

    Hello VS,

In my chart Venus is in 0 degrees Virgo, Ascendant is in 14 degrees Virgo, and Mercury at 20 degrees Virgo.

Venus is considered to be in the 12th correct?
    Is my Venus considered dead?

    Thank you in advance.

  72. Amit says:

    Hi VS

    1) Are Lajjitaadi avasthas of planets derived from the aspects table (full and partial) you defined (and also available in JHora)?
    2) JHora shows slight variations in aspect table when we base the table on D1 and the Bhava chalit chart (based on D1), is this an error or can there be differences there?

    Best Regards

    • VS says:

i think lajjit avastha just means any negative planet in 5th from a planet. As 5th from any planet shows thinking/ higher knowledge/ intelligence/ creativity, this can generally lead to confusions, complexes and aimlessness. beyond that I find no special meaning in this avastha. bhaav chart takes into account the exact central points of bhaavs and will also depend on the bhaav system you are using like equal bhaav vs. sripaathi etc. and so yes the mathematical calculations will change from a little bit to significant depending on the chart

  73. basant kumar gairola says:

dear vivek, i have deep admiration for your selfless efforts, i have just started learning, pardon for my naive and silly doubt….if degree of ascendant is say 1 degree or 29 degree, would it mean its baaladi bal is negligible.
would it also mean that the residential strength of not only this bhav but all bhavs would be maximum at the stated degrees. at 15 degree of ascendant balaadi and residential would be having same trend line.

    • VS says:

hello thanks for the nice words
my suggestion is that first do a literature review of all the basic content and then start formulating questions. otherwise you will have many questions that you can answer yourself along the way. thanks

    • Sundar says:

      If I may:
If lagna is at 1 degree, planets around 1 to 5 degrees has avasya (very important) bala; same with lagna at 29 degrees..planets between 25 and 29 are still strong.
If lagna is at 1 degree and a planet is at 17 degrees, avasya bala is weak and it will shift to the bhaav after the posited Rasi; but at 17 degrees the planet is youthful and energetic as per baalaadi avasta. So the question is, with lagna at 1 degree, which is better? A planet at 2 degrees or 17 degrees? At two, it is inherently strong; at 17 it needs fortification with some good aspects and extra good dispositor strength.

      • VS says:

a planet close to bhaav madhya is always better. time and again you will see in case studies that balaadi avastha is more generic and anything more generic in jyotish is always less important that specific points like residential strength

        • Sundar says:

Thanks Vivek. Obviously, my answer is from the learnings from you. To add: From a perspective of karma too, it makes sense. If avasya bala wasn’t important, a tonne of people will have poor balaadi avastha with slow moving planets. I am sure the creator put more nuance into the karma. I feel the same way about temporary friends and enemies among planets. There is a nuance to karma there too, to make things better for a planet.

  74. Arohi says:

If a woman has jupiter with sign of capricorn which is debilitated at 26 degree at 7th house. Does jupiter debilitated shows effect??

  75. Jayanthi says:

What is the strength of aspect of Jupiter in mritavastha in Sagittarius for a Capricorn ascendant ? It is conjunct with Mercury R and also Sun
    Thanks

  76. Karthik says:

    Hello VS,

if the lagna degree is at 29-30 degrees or 0-1 degrees, can we assume that the personality and characteristics of the person will be governed by two signs and the respective sign lords?

  77. Karthik says:

Thank you, VS. I am quite intrigued by the fact that the first and last few degrees in movable and dual signs become virgottam. How do planets change their characteristics suddenly – especially how do we assess the planet characteristics very close to zero degree on either sides in these signs?

    • VS says:

      there is no ‘sudden’
the beauty of jyotish lays in the divisionals which form layer below layers of complexity to a planet. the only people who find that hard to understand is those who have been way oversold early on the concept of Balaadi avastha. (just because it is very simple to apply)

such students, start to see every planet from this lens. that if a planet is not towards the middle of a rashi, it is ‘dead’ and wont do any good. If instead, they pick up real charts, they will realize that it almost never works in reality. Bill Gates, Modi etc. the list goes on and goes with charts of very succesful men where most planets were in the first or last 3 to 5 degrees of a sign

  78. Kamal Sharma says:

    Hello VS,

Saturn in 4th house leo ascendent (scorpio sign : 4 degree), sir any remedies for Mahadasha ?

  79. MRG says:

    Hi VS,
Can something said generically about the charts where no planet moves in chalit compared to charts where many planets move.

Also, how does one analyse charts where lagna/bhav Madhya is in extreme rashi sandhi. Where one minute change in birth time leads to change of lagna. Can something be said generically about such cases?

    Thanks
    MRG

    • VS says:

No..the only thing that can be said generically is that the more central to a rashi a lagna is, lesser is the chance of finding a planet moving in chalit

Mathematically any lagna at exact 15 degrees will have no planet moving in chalit in the equal bhaav system

  80. Tanisha says:

    Hi Sir,
In case lagna degree is at 18 (Virgo) and Venus is in 4th house at 15 deg, can we say that Venus antardasha will be beneficial ?

    Regards,
    Tanisha

    • VS says:

by itself this is a good position for venus and is a functional and generic benefic, so yes. rest depends on the overall chart

  81. Simmi says:

Hello VS, this site is a great endeavor for the learning of astrology students.
It is widely held that moon in the 8th house is extremely weak.
Consider this scenario: Leo Ascendant (16*57′), Full moon in the Poorvabhadra nakshatra in 8th house (pisces) creating the vipreet rajyog and Gajkesari Yoga. The moon is aspected by all 3 of FBs: Mars from lagna and Sun+Jupiter from the 2nd house. Is it a strong moon or the weakness still persists?

    • VS says:

your understanding of basics seems to be good. however you are trying to converge everything to a binary result – Good or Bad. Like most things in real life, astrology is almost always somewhere in between – shades of grey. so good and bad persist together in jyotish as they do in real life

  82. Michael Wallace says:

    Hello VS.
What are the side-effects if a FM but NB planet is very strong in a chart. For example, if a cancer ascendant has Venus in 4th House (Libra sign), close to Bhav Madhya. Here Venus is strong, being in MK with directional strength. As my understanding goes, the significations of 11th and 4th house will be strengthened. But being a FM, does this Venus is harmful for the health of Jatak and his mother? On the other hand, it is also said that a NB in Kendra is good for longitivity of life-span?

    • VS says:

venus will still give all luxuries, houses, vehicles etc and fullfil the malavya yoga power in such a situation. however it will retain an evil tinge to it and can cause ill health related to its karakatva overlap with 4th (lungs and breasts region) as well as ill health but long life to mother etc

  83. GKK says:

    Hello VS,
What happens if a planet occupies its own house but is in ‘mrit’ condition, e.g., Venus at 1 degree in 12th house of Gemini ascendant..will the results of Venus in this condition become less due to its degrees and placement in Kritika nakshatra? What if such a Venus is aspected by Jupiter from the sixth house and has Saturn in its other house (fifth house)? Can such a placement signify no children /childlessness?

    • VS says:

always look at the distance from the bhaav center. closer, the stronger the impact of that bhaav and the aspects of the planet on the aspected bhaavs
apart from that if any planet is virgottam while being very low or large degrees out of 30 in any sign, it gets full color of the depositor rashi

finally any planets that conjunct, oppose or trinal to the planet will modify its effects greatly by their functional and generic influence on the planet. so just because venus is at a low degree in 12th is not sufficient to predict anything
as venus is also own house and in 12th it is generically very good (its general exaltation sign is the 12th of pisces in kaalpusush chart and hence venus generally in 12th is strong and benefic unless heavily afflicted)

  84. R pristine says:

Sir; A planet is vargottam by d3-d1 & d60-d1(not by d9-d1). It is in same bhava too in d1.Is it Deeply colored by sign lord??though faraway (13°-14°) from both midpoint of sign &bhav? Pl clarify. Thanks. Regards.

    • VS says:

D1 color is most important by balaadi Avasthaa and increased in intensity by D9. other divisionals are more relevant for those particular areas in life. D60 changes fast, so one has to be careful about time accuracy
