Dignity of Planets (Part Uno)

There are many ways to ascertain the ‘dignity’ or state of happiness/ well-being of a planet.

I will mention a few important ones here. Many are advanced topics, too early to be discussed now. Remember to use these rules liberally to paint a broad brush picture and not too literally once you get to early stages of judging horoscopes.

(I) Friends/ Neutral/ Enemies

(a) Permanent Basis

In Vedic astrology each planet has a ‘Permanent’ relation with the other planets as one of friend or neutral or enemy. Remember this might NOT be mutual. Meaning if Mercury treats Moon as a friend, does NOT imply that Moon treats Mercury as a friend too. Infact in this example Moon treats Mercury as a friend whereas Mercury treats Moon as an enemy (not even neutral)

Easier for me to tabulate this as below-

Planet Friend  Neutral  Enemy
Sun Mars, Moon, Jupiter Mercury Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu
Moon Sun, Mercury Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Venus Rahu, Ketu
Mars Sun, Jupiter, Moon, Ketu Saturn, Venus Rahu, Mercury
Rahu Venus, Saturn, Ketu Mercury, Jupiter Mars, Sun, Moon
Jupiter Mars, Moon, Sun Saturn, Rahu, Ketu Mercury, Venus
Saturn Mercury, Venus, Rahu Ketu, Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars
Mercury Venus, Sun, Rahu Saturn, Rahu, Ketu Moon
Ketu Mars, Jupiter, Venus Sun, Mercury, Rahu, Saturn Moon
Venus Saturn, Mercury, Rahu, Ketu Jupiter, Mars Sun, Moon

So the Permanent status never changes. Sun will always treat Saturn as an enemy etc.

(b) Temporary Basis

Planets placed in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th & 12th from a planet act as its Temporary Friend

Planets placed in 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th from a planet act as a Temporary Enemy

So this will be different for each horoscope. Example if sun is placed in 3rd house from Saturn, it is its Temporary friend even though ofcourse it is a Permanent enemy

(c) Add these Up to Get the COMPOUND relation between 2 planets-

Permanent Friend + Temporary Friend = Great Friend

Permanent Friend + Temporary Enemy = Neutral

Neutral +Temporary Friend = Friend

Neutral + Temporary Enemy = Enemy

Permanent Enemy + Temporary Friend = Neutral

Permanent Enemy + Temporary Enemy = Great Enemy

(II) Concept of Exaltation

In terms of happiness/vitality/ strength of a planet in a sign, its of the following order-

Exaltation> Mooltrikona Sign> Own Sign> Friend> Neutral> Enmical Sign> Debilitation

Below I post the exaltation and debilitation signs for each planets. NOTE that each planet is exalted exactly opposite (180 degrees in zodiac) from where it is debilitated or weakest. Secondly each planet, even though considered exalted in that entire sign, will be exact Peak Power at one particular degree which is mentioned below. And at the same degree 180 opposite sign, it will be at Nadir or Zero Power. So typically good to have a planet close to that degree but in an approaching manner rather than receeding. E.g. Sun is exalted at 10 degrees in Aries. So its going towards its peak 0 to 10 and then goes down a bit, but regardless, it will be considered exalted in the sign of Aries as a general quick analysis

Planet Exaltation Debilitation Mooltrikona Own Sign
Sun Aries 10 degrees Libra 10 degrees Leo 0 to 20 degrees Leo entire sign
Moon Taurus 3 degrees Scorpio 3 degrees Taurus 3 to 20 degrees Cancer
Mars Capricorn 28 degrees Cancer 28 degrees Aries 0 to 12 degrees Aries 12 to 30 and entire Scorpio
Jupiter Cancer at 5 degrees Capricorn at 5 degrees Sagitarius 0 to 10 degrees Sagitarius 10 to 30 and Pisces
Saturn Libra at 20 degrees Aries at 20 degrees Aquarius 0 to 20 degrees Capricorn and Aquarius 20 to 30 degrees
Mercury Virgo at 15 degrees Pisces at 15 degrees Virgo 15 to 20 degrees Virgo 20 to 30 degrees & Gemini
Venus Pisces at 27 degrees Virgo at 27 degrees Libra 0 to 15 degrees Libra 15 to 30 degrees & Taurus

NOTE: Rahu & Ketu as written earlier, DO NOT own any house. Hence they act as SHADOW planets. They give results of houses/ signs they sit in as if they are that sign and also they give results of planets they are conjunct with. So if Rahu sits with Mars, it will start to behave like Mars.

That said, their exaltation signs do have some controversy with different schools of thought within Vedic astrology. Over time and with practice and along with Parasari school of thought is what I mention below-

Rahu – Exalted in both Taurus & Gemini.

Debilitated in Both Scorpio & Sagitarius

Acts as MK in Aquarius and Cancer. Own house as Virgo

Ketu – Exalted in Scorpio and Sagitarius & debilitated in Taurus & Gemini

Acts as own house in Pisces

  1. Sujan says:

Could you plz tell me , what would be the status of Venus in Pisces after 27 degree (lets say 29 degree) is it Mool Trikon or Exalted or Nothing ??

  2. Sujan says:

    Thank you sir.. 🙂

  3. Dhana Latchmi Mahesh says:

Can u tell me how to calculate the right degree of Rahu and Ketu since they are both retrograde shadow planets? If my birth chart says Rahu is 27 degrees, does that mean I have to minus it off from 30 degree?

  4. Ravi says:

People say planets in high degree like 28 degrees have no ability to give effect. Does Mars lose its effect in deep exaltation at 28 degrees.

    • VS says:

No. Baaladi avastha is just one way of power for a planet
thousands of real world examples of planets at 0 or 29th degree giving great results

  5. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
I am not sure if my question is relevant to your article, but I am asking anyway. With lagna at 1 degree, when Ketu (26 degrees) and Sun (1 degree) are conjunct in the 12th, is wearing a cat’s eye advisable? Does a gemstone strengthen the malefic (ketu) or does it reduce the ill-effects in general?

    • VS says:

For wearing any gem, a planet has to be seen in totality in the horoscope. Including its placement, dignity, aspects and ownership. Ketu and Saturn have very strong stones, generally not advised unless carefully checked via an astrologer.

  6. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Does a planet sitting in an enemy house (due to its temporary/permanent enemity) become a malefic? Can it cast positive aspects?

    • VS says:

No, a planet which is functionally benefic for a chart will remain so even when in an enmical sign or debilitated. Just that its strength decreases in the ability to do good

  7. Siri says:

    Dear Sir,
How will Rahu placed at 20 degree in libra for kumbha lagna behave? The saying goes”shani vath Rahu”……so does Rahu behave as shani and also Rahu being colord of lagna. Deeply appreciate your insight
    Siri

    • VS says:

      Siri

Shanivat Rahu is only applicable for the generic effects of Rahu
for functional effects, it gives the results of planets that conjunct or aspect it
secondly it gives the effects of the rashi lord of the rashi its placed in as well as the nakshatra lord that it is placed in

  8. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
What happens when there is a graha yudh? Supposing Mars and Jupiter are posited in the 1st house and Mars wins..what is the effect?

    • VS says:

It will act as a very strong conjunction. however the planet that loses will always have problems in the protection of its significations (houses it rules)

      • Saroj Mahapatra says:

        Sri VS:
If Jupiter and Saturn are in the same degree in 7th sign (8th Bhava) for a Libra Lagna and Saturn loses, is it advisable to wear a gemstone for Saturn (Yoga Karaka but unfortunately lost in planetary war and in 8th bhava)?

        • VS says:

yes you can wear as a yoga karaka for the ascendant. Try for a few days and if you start seeing negative results increase then remove it

  9. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
If Jupiter is sitting in Libra, is it sitting in a neutral house since Venus sees it as neutral; on the other hand, if Venus is in Pisces is it sitting in an enemy house (not taking into account temporal relationships)?

  10. Julia says:

Hello! Thank you for the report.
Could you Please tell me if a 29.45° of Leo, alredy acts in virgo?
    Thank you!!

  11. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
How does Jupiter act within 5 deg and, say, 18 deg in Capricorn? My understanding is 5 degree is deepest debilitation, 1 degree is lowest debilitation, and anywhere beyond 5, debilitation does not exist .

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

technically a planet farther away from deepest debilitation point gets stronger and stronger
a Jupiter at 15 degrees in Capricorn is still debilitated technically but is now improving. also a Jupiter at 29 degrees in saggi is virgottam in own sign. Does not mean its strong because it is within 6 degrees of its lowest point and hence will have a low shadbal

  12. Uday says:

Hi sir Venus in Pisces 17 degree will have any exaltation results? It’s placed in lagna and conjuct with mercury debilitated while lagna lord is in virgo 7 th house…How does it create a good one or average one?

  13. Jay says:

    Hello sir,
I’ve 11th lord Mars in 10 house for Capricorn ascendant. But my Mars is at 29.33 degrees. Is my mars weak and is there any chance that my income may get affected? I’ve heard many times that planets at late degrees cannot give results.
    Tnx in advance.

    • VS says:

Baaladi avastha is just one of the things to consider. a planet in late degrees can still be strong due to residential strength, divisionals strength, conjunctions, aspects, rashi placement, shadbal etc.

  14. SC says:

Dear Sir: I have a couple of questions on the dispositor relationship. I will use Mars-Saturn example to ask the questions. If Saturn, for example, is in Scorpio and Mars is in Aries for a Libra lagna native, then Mars is considered to be strong because it is in Mooltrikona, but Saturn is considered to be weak because it is in Scorpio. Mars is also aspecting Saturn through its 8th aspect. In this case, although Mars becomes the dispositor of Saturn, can Saturn mahadasha be good for the native? The confusion comes from the following issues: 1) Saturn is Raj yoga karaka for Libra lagna; 2) But Saturn is in enemy sign, 3) The dispositor Mars is strong but is in 6th-8th relationship with Saturn, and is also aspecting Saturn. How to judge the Saturn mahadasha based on this planetary position and relationship?

    • VS says:

you have to look at the aspects of all other planets, not just mars on Saturn. Also the divisional and nakshatra placements will be important

however, in a nut shell…Saturn will damage the 4th house in its dasas or atleast give some negative results related to mother or land/ property of the native. Saturn dasa is likely to cause separation from family and anxiety but it could be good in terms of career/ job…if self employed and entrepreneurial, the person can gain great heights in their chosen field

  15. SC says:

If the 4th house has Sun and Moon (which are 10th and 11th house lords, respectively, for Libra lagna) and this house also receives the 5th aspect of Jupiter (in Virgo), does that mitigate the problem of Saturn’s aspect on the 4th house?
Thank you for your quick response

  16. c2c says:

    Question on permanent relationships:

Rahu and Ketu appear to have been classified differently in different sources. And by sources I mean well recognized sources. So I did my own math to figure out (i) the permanent relationships of Rahu and Ketu and (ii) how Rahu and Ketu are treated for other planets.

I will restrict this message to just (i) and for (ii) I will post a separate message to maintain clarity.

    (i) Permanent relationship of Rahu

As per BPHS – chapter 47 verses 34, “The Multrikonas of Rahu and Ketu are Mithun and Dhanu. The own Rasis of Rahu and Ketu are Kumbh and Vrischik.”

When I use Gemini (Mithun) for Rahu, here is how my calculations turned out.

    RAHU:
    Mooltrikona: Gemini

    Friend conditions
    Exaltation: Taurus (Venus)
2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12: Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius, Taurus (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Saturn, Venus)

    Enemy conditions:
3, 6, 7, 10, 11: Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries (Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Jupiter, Mars)
As per BPHS, since Ketu owns Scorpio (Vrischik), it is also an enemy.

    Friend: Venus, Saturn, Mercury, Moon
    Enemies: Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Ketu
    Neutral: None
    ***
When I use Aquarius (Kumbh) which as per BPHS is Rahu’s own house, I get the following.
    RAHU:
    Ownhouse: Aquarius

    Friend conditions:
    Exaltation: Taurus (Venus)
2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12: Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mercury, Venus, Saturn)

    Enemy conditions:
3, 6, 7, 10, 11: Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius (Mars, Moon, Sun, Mars, Jupiter)
As per BPHS, Ketu owns Scorpio (Vrischik), and so it is also an enemy.

    Friend: Venus, Saturn, Mercury
    Enemies: Moon, Sun, Mars, Ketu
    Neutral: Jupiter
    ***

Your results appear to be different. Are there exceptions that apply to Rahu and Ketu that is yielding different results?

  17. c2c says:

Here is message (ii) continuation from above:

(ii) how Rahu and Ketu are treated for other planets.

I am using Saturn as an example here. Also I am using , the own Rasis of Rahu and Ketu to be Kumbh and Vrischik – as per BPHS, chapter 47 verse 34.

    SATURN:
    Mooltrikona: Aquarius

    Friend conditions:
    Exaltation: Libra (Venus)
2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12 from Mooltrikona: Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mercury, Venus, Saturn)

    Enemy conditions:
3, 6, 7, 10, 11: Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius (Mars, Moon, Sun, Mars, Jupiter)
As per BPHS, since Ketu owns Scorpio (Vrischik), it is also an enemy.

    Friend: Venus, Mercury
    Enemies: Mars, Moon, Sun, Ketu
    Neutral: Jupiter
    Ignored: Saturn (same sign)

    So two questions:

    1) So I made Ketu as enemy since it owns Scorpio (Vrischik) the 10th house. However as per your table above I see you have classified Ketu as neutral.

    2) Also for Rahu, since it owns Aquarius (Kumbh) which is 1st sign as well as mooltrikona of saturn:
should it be an enemy as it is not in the list of 2,4,5,8,9,12
    or
should it be a friend because it is the sign of mooltrikona?

    • VS says:

Ketu is a neutral as it treats Saturn as a friend. However Saturn treats ketu is partially enmical.
Rahu is a friend both ways with Saturn. By this house logic of parasara, since rahu and Saturn own the same MK in your definition – Aquarius, then how can they be inimical to each other? That would mean for every planet, since it owns the 1st sign and not in the list of 2,4…becomes inimical to itself? not logical right

I think rahu and Saturn consider each other as friends
ketu and Saturn are overall netural as one considers the other a friend while the other is uneasy with Ketu

it is said kujavat ketu…ketu acts as a combo of mars and Saturn. thus the Saturn part of it is friendly from a Saturn perspective (the tyaag and spirituatlity part) but not the fiery part of ketu which acts like mars and can cause aggression, anger, surgery and accidents. since mars exalts in Capricorn and ketu feels happy in Saturn’s domain, ketu will not act bad in the sign of Capricorn, as long as a natural benefic like Jupiter and venus is aspecting or conjuncting it. otherwise ketu in the sign of Capricorn will become toxic and carry a depressive and violent agenda

    • VS says:

also…when you have one sign falling in a friend condition and one sign in an enemy condition, take the one which is Mooltrikona

so for Capricorn, Jupiter is friendly as MK is 12th and non MK sign is 3rd

so doesn’t become overall neutral. remains more friend than enemy or what you can call mild benefic

      • Amit says:

        Hi VS

If a planet owns 2 houses. In terms of placement which house is represented more: MK of the planet or the house that it aspects or posited in (if in own house).

For example: for Gemini ascendant with Jupiter in second house, will it carry more the agenda of 7th house or 10th house (since it aspects the 10th house and not the 7th house)?

I asked this question earlier as well, maybe you have missed it. Similarly for cancer ascendant with Jupiter in 1st house, it will carry more of Sgi (6th house) or more of Pisces (9th house). It aspects 9th house in this case.

        Best Regards
        Amit

        • VS says:

the 1st basic of jyotish is that MK sign is more important – that is the reason that it is called Mooktrikona in the first place
however if the planet sits in the other rasi and/ or fully aspects the other rasi and has no connection with the MK rashi, then in that particular case, the MK sign becomes less ‘activated’ than the other sign due to the placement of the lord

all this is relative, however, as both rashis will always be represented by the same planet. more or less is a subjective and relative context

  18. ps says:

    My whole chart 19-11-84

    Plz explain my Saturn result
Till date I m suffering a lot not having any pleasure in any section in life.no any kind of settlement,no education completion no job,no money

  19. . says:

    Respected sir,
I’ve capricorn ascendant..Here my 8th and 9th house lords(Sun and Mercury respectively) exchanged houses, ie…Sun in 9th house and Mercury in 8th house.Does it create Vipareet Rajyoga as 6th lord and 8th lord are exchanging houses (as mercury is also the ruler of 6th house).

    Tnx

    • VS says:

a partial vipreet yoga is created but not bcoz of sun and mercury exchange. just because the 6th lord sits in the 8th house

this combination overall is neither good nor bad. but will be bad for the native’s father/ guru as well as educational prospects of the person in life. It is good for wealth accumulation, especially via commerce/ business

  20. Sneha says:

Jupiter, venus and rahu are same 5th house and sign libra.. What doest it mean and how does it effect?

    • VS says:

      good raj yoga
great creativity. depends on which planet is closer to venus.
if rahu, lots of romantic relations possible
career in arts/ cinema and entertainment industry is possible

  21. Karan says:

In my chart(Libra lagna), Saturn(Retrograde) is placed in 5th house in Aquarious at 25degrees while Sun is placed in 11th house in Leo at 29 degrees. Both of them are in own signs. Do they destroy each other? And how does it affect the houses they rule?
    Thanks in advance.

  22. akash says:

My venus in taurus 4th house …28 degree …how much weight of diamond should I wear ……as I m kumbha lagna nstive

  23. Sundar says:

VS, for a Capricorn asc, Ketu sitting in the 10th, Nakshtra is Moola (Lord Ketu), is a cat’s eye good?

  24. Kush says:

Lagnesh mars in 10th house of 28degrees and 6minutes..my mars is weak? Will it give good results

    • VS says:

Nothing in astrology is standalone. all things have to be read holistically

in general mars in 10th is very strong with full directional strength and in general 10th bhaav is the strongest bhaav in a chart
if lagnesh then mars can be either in Capricorn (exalted) or in Leo (friendly sign) in 10th. both of which are good positions. A lot will depend on the placement of the depositor of the planet

  25. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
When Jupiter is sitting in an enemy’s house (Taurus), how would you calculate the aspect on 7th house in terms of +ve, -ve,neutral?

    • VS says:

Not just Jupiter but any planet’s aspect means the way the planet influences the aspected bhaav. the strength and beneficial/ malefic nature of the planet will completely depend on the strength and nature of the planet itself. So if Capricorn lagna, Saturn is in aries and fully aspecting its own house – lagna, it does not by itself help the lagna. Infact it will give ill health and damage the 1st house features of health, character, personality etc. the person will have an anger and temperament issue and this will destroy his mental and home peace as well as health and personality.

however lets say venus is placed exact 180 degrees opposite of Saturn in libra and giving a 100% aspect on it. Now the above results will be modified. the will NOT fully go away, but will be modified to a large beneficial extent

same way if this Saturn is fully conjunct mars in 4th in aries, it gets fully neecha bhang and a person, after initial struggle in life will gain assets and property

So all this you can learn from doing case studies. 100 horoscopes and a deep dive analysis will teach you much more than 100 days of reading text in books

  26. Navit says:

Rahu in 7 house in navmasa indicates foreign spouse?

    • VS says:

      is possible yes

    • Nazareno says:

Is a planet strong, when it’s has one point in shad balA? It’s functional malefic Jupiter aspect, a good or a bad one? Also it’s functional malefic Saturn aspects a good one or a bad one?

      • VS says:

not sure what you mean by 1 point in shadbal?

it might mean 1.0 or 100% or in other words the planet has the exact power as needed to be deemed sufficiently strong. example 1.5 means the planet is 50% stronger than its minimum requirement etc.

  27. Sumit says:

Aries ascdent emptey 7 house indictaes beautiful spouse?

Venus is 17 degree dignity it is in leo sign 5 house …it indicates beautifulspouse?

        • VS says:

          sorry nothing can be generalized

these sort of questions are like asking a doc. headache does it mean I have a brain tumor or stress? answer is that it can be both. the doctor needs to examine the body, blood tests, scans and medical history. Only then can a meaningful result be reached

  28. BR says:

I’ve heard that Mars Venus conjunction (within 5 degrees) in a kendra house creates Raja-yoga for Aquarius ascendant since Mars Venus are the owners of a kendra (10th) and a trikona (9th) house for Aquarius. Is that true?

If that conjunction is in 7th house, would it still make the native manglik or does the auspiciousness of mars-venus conjunction overpower that?

  29. wara says:

respected vs if vemus is placed in 0:16 degree cancer asc rising in 1 degree and vargottama in cancer navamsa lagna in astavarga 3 bindus in lagna,,my question is did venus lost its entire power because its in zero degree ,,,?and its is aspected by 10thhouse mars and seventh house saturn for cancer ascendent i couldnt find answer for my question ,,your answer would be of great help to me thanks

  31. Su says:

    Namaskar Shri Vivek Sir,

First of all, i greatly applaud your painstaking work of simplifying the concepts of astrology for a beginner like me. I consider you as one of my Gurus to teach me astrology in this age of internet. I have been slowly reading and re-reading your pages, one day at a time. This is just a beginning for me and there is a long way to go deep diving in this vast ocean of astrology. As you mentioned in one of your pages that the burning desire of learning astrology should be rekindled everyday to achieve small steps day after day.
Just read through your dignity of planets chart. Thanks a bunch, for this is the most simplified chart i came across to memorize it. I, however, would suggest you to change a small error in the chart. Under permanent basis chart for mercury, you have mentioned Rahu as both friend and neutral. I think it should be Jupiter instead of Rahu under neutral for Mercury.

Please keep up with this excellent work.

    Best,
    Su

  32. Bhavana says:

Respected sir, I have Mars rahu conjunction in 5th house in Libra sign and it’s lord Venus is combust sitting close to sun in 3rd house. How will the results for combination be? Thank you

  33. Sahithi says:

Sir, what if Sun (29.49 degree) and Guru (29.34 degree) both are in same sign Scorpio at 1oth house and Mercury (10.34 degree ) and Mars( 20.15 degree) is also in 10th house its own sign( Scorpio ) in lagna (Aquarius) chart. My question is :-
Will Jupiter fully combust because in navansha( Aries Lagna) also Sun and Jupiter are together in 12th house and 12th sign (Pisces) ?. Mars is in 10th house in Navansha also.
How much negative/less benefit effect Jupiter will give to native ?
Thanks in Advance for your guidance.

  34. Aman says:

Retrograte Excalted jupiter in 3rd house of taurus lagana. Is it having good or bad results in his mahadasha.

    • VS says:

you have to look at the overall horoscope and just one planet or even all planets are not enuff. yogas have to be seen. many types of strengths for each planet are also to be seen. finally dasas and transits in combination with the yogas and avayogas of a horo will trigger events

  35. Robert says:

Dear Vivek, my question is little bit out of topic, but still I think it may interest many. What will be effect of Venus in Pisces in Gandanta? Do you consider Venus after 27 degrees of Pisces still exalted or it is more like mooltrikona (as some schools suggests)? Thank you.

    • VS says:

      Hi Robert

Venus at the end of Pisces is deeply exalted (peak at 27 degrees)
venus is mooltrikona only in Libra from 0 to 15 degrees and not in pisces or taurus. if a school suggests that venus is Mooltrikona in pisces (regardless of the degree) then they are wrong

  36. sachith says:

Why moon is exalted in taurus whose lord is venus towhom moon is enemy?

    • VS says:

Moon does not consider Venus as enemy, only venus considers moon as an enemy
Very much in the same manner as Mars is exalted in Saturn’s house even when Saturn thinks of Mars as an enemy
exaltations have a rational reason. Its not just about enemy or not. Example moon exalts in Taurus as it helps her find a stable ground (fixed sign) of pleasure/ care/ finances/ comforts (represented by Taurus) where the mind (moon) feels at home and at peace. Liekwise, Mars – a planet of impulse and aggression finds stability and control in the sign of Saturn which tends to restrain and slow down things. Think of a energy as a bomb which destroys and burns, the same fission/ fusion when controlled and restrained makes for large scale Atomic energy which can give power to millions.

  37. Midhun says:

Sir what happens to Jupiter after 5 degree cancer? Is it still exalted?

    • VS says:

Yes, Jupiter remains strong, the exaltation definition mathematically might be over after 5 degrees, however jupiter will give very strong results

      • Amit says:

        Hi VS

Such an exalted Jupiter (say 5 degrees) for an ascendant like Gemini (as we know Jupiter considers Mercury an enemy and is a strong Maraka in this case as it is lord of 7th, sitting in second), will the strong results be +ve strong results or -ve strong results?

In general: an exalted FM/Maraka for an ascendant is good/bad – does its exaltation reduce the -ve effects or does it increase it?

    Dear VS ji,

Any Vargottama planet having a very low Shad bala and Vimsopaka bala.:

Will it be able to protect its significance in the chart?

Will it be able to fulfil its promise in the chart?

I am confused which one to give more weightage.. One one hand ,Vargottama planets are very strong..but what if the shad bala calculations show them to be very weak?

    Please let me know..

    Thanks ,

    Baskar

    • VS says:

virgottam planet just means the planet is deeply colored with the owner of the sign it sits in

now if the owner of the sign is weak or ill placed, then the virgottam planet will give intensely bad results
likewise a planet virgottam in a 6/8/12 bhaav will generally be bad

  39. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
How significant is the Kalpurush house?
I have seen 2 cases, scorpio ascs, with Mars sitting in the 11th (Kanya) which would indicate good laba from Mars but also general bad health. In both cases, the lord of the 4th Saturn is sitting in the 9th house (not a bad placement) but is the 4th Kalpurush house aspecting the 11th and both have heart issues. Can you comment on the kalpurush house tenants aspecting a house counted from Pakka lagna?

    • VS says:

Mars for Scorpio becomes a negative planet as its MK sign is in 6th of which it is also karaka for accidents, injuries, litigation etc
then in virgo its weak and unhappy in an imical sign
then virgo is the worst place for scorpio as a domain…because mercury is toxic and 11th is a MK sign so most evil house
Saturn in 9th is in an imical sign also and being enemy of lagna lord is bad for health as well. Ketu has to be seen as the co lord of lagna in this case as well as mercury and moon the depositors of the said planets

  40. gil says:

    Hi VS,

I just found your website, it is very interesting thought.
I am french, i have a particular combution aspect. Virgo lagna (23.55) rahu near lagna (28.54) and, in 2nd house, venus 23.38 Libra, sun 23.58 libra, jupiter 19.57 libra, moon 9.16 libra.
Whe i look at your explanations, each of these planets are in the same house so become Temporary Enemy am i right ?

At the same time, sun has past its weaker point in Libra but venus is approaching it strongest point in libra. Sun being lord of 12th, i suppose it destroyes partially venus no ?

    Sincerely

    • VS says:

I don’t do personal readings. However in this case, venus is stronger than sun and its also a nighttime birth when sun is weaker (left side of the horoscope). Hence it becomes an indirect yoga for wealth as 2nd lord and 12th are together but 2nd is much stronger than 12th

      • gil says:

        Hi VS

Thanks for your reply. I also read you define Rahu sign being virgo and Ketu own sign is pisces. They get stronger in this case ?

        Sincerely

        • VS says:

I think the main sign of Rahu is Aquarius and exaltation both in Taurus and Gemini. It behaves like own house in virgo
ketu own sign is scorpio. exalted in both scorpio and saggitarius and behaves like own sign in pisces

  41. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
For a Vrischik ascendant, Moon and Rahu are sitting in Taurus. To add, Rahu is sitting in Moon’s nakshatra Rohini. The dispositor Venus has good sthaana bal being 5 degrees to lagna but is debilitated. Mercury is sitting with exalted Jupiter and I believe that does no remove the neech of Venus. Venus is not a functional benefic being lord of 7th and 12th.
How much does Venus’ debilitation affect Moon and Rahu in Taurus?

    • VS says:

the mind will be preoccupied with the desire to get rich/ powerful/ material relationships and romance. as the depositor is debilitated, moon and rahu will do damange to the 7th house by multiple relationships and a fickle mind

  42. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
For an Aquarius asc, Venus being a yogakkara, sits in the 6th and enemy’s house?
Does venus still do good (for example, removing obstacles, enemies)?

    • VS says:

The intent of Venus will still be to do good. However the ability it has will depend on the strength of its rashi and nakshatra depositors as well as the other aspects it has. Any planet sitting in the 6th, 10th, 12th and 2nd will be affecting Venus fully in this situation

  43. Suku says:

    Sir,
In my Horoscope Venus (26.12 degree) is place in 1st house of Pisces Lagna. So is that Venus has full power ? Venus is good or bad mor me ?

    • VS says:

its power is good but will depend on its distance from sun, strength of depositor jupiter, other aspects and conjunctions on it etc.

  44. Prasad says:

My venus and moon are great enemies while mutually calculating them using your chart. How do I get around this issue and appease them so to lessen the pain?

  45. Sundar says:

VS, The lord of the Rasi where a planet is exalted becomes a neutral to the planet even if the relationship is inimical from the other side, example Mars to saturn. Is this correct?

  46. Hello VS,

Thanks for reply. Would you please reply on following?

In Capricorn lagna – Venus (lord of 5 &10 house Yogkaraka ) + Mars (lord of 4 & 11 house) + Rahu in 9th house (Virgo) rashi. So it’s Venus+Mar+Rahu conjunction in 9th house which is Virgo sign and a Debilitation sign of Venus.

All these 3 planets are in Utra. Phalguni Naksatra which is owned by SUN which happens be the 8th house lord (Leo and Neutral) and is sitting in 7th house in Ashleasha (Mercury) Cancer sign.

Mercury (9th House lord) + Saturn (1,2 Lord) is in 8th house Maga Nak. (Owned by Ketu)

As Venus is in Naksatra of SUN, to give Venus strength- should I do remedy for Venus or Sun or Mercury? Should it be wearing a stone or donation?
I am really confused about this? I will really appreciate if you give your suggestions on this or point me to any of your published documents about it.

    Regards,
    Jaidev Sharma

  47. A says:

Read your bio — nice journey. I have similar beginnings..

I have a quick question. Do you think, or are there claims in the astro books you have read that when a planet is not in the house of debilitation but is close to it (say, the next house), the debilitative nature is still present but would not be as high as it would have been had the planet been in house of perfect debilitation? For example, Sun is debilitated in Libra, but would it still be somewhat debilitated in Virgo — at least would it be less powerful in Virgo than in, say, Taurus or Gemini?

In other words, I want to know if debiltation and exaltation are an all or nothing phenomenon or if they are gradual – waxing and waning as they get near or moving away from their maximum potency.

    Thanks much.
    -a

    • VS says:

      Thanks for the nice words
the concept you are talking about is described as “neecha abhilashi” in various texts. When a planet is one sign before its fall, it starts of become weak as its approaching its fall. logically speaking, keeping texts aside, this is just like the moon waxing and waning for example, but in moons case its clearly vishible to the eye and logical, in other planets it is less obvious (im not talking about brightness here, just say the happy / exalted nature of the planet) is also going thru similar cycles in the 12 signs

by thew way mathematically the Uchha Bal component of a planet is 60 virupas at exact exaltation and 0 at exact debilitation. ANywhere in between, simple mathematical calculation. example halfway between will be 30 and so on..

  49. Gururaj says:

    Hi VS,
Does Moon and Jupiter present in Scorpio give rise to GajaKesari yoga? as Moon is debilitated in Scorpio.

    • VS says:

Yoga means a combination. Debilitation or other dignity just represents the strength of the planet(s) and hence the strength of the Yoga(s)

  50. SJ says:

In the summary chart above for dignity, I believe for Mercury is inadvertently tabulated wrongly. Please double check and let me know. Thanks.

  51. Sundar says:

    Hello Vivek,
When natural benefics are retrograde in the natal chart, what is your observation (apart from their unpredictability, tending to mimic a conjuct planet which I guess would be common to all planets) regarding their ability to do good? Also, during the forward motion in gochaara of these planets, would I have to factor in the the natal retrogression ?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

gochar is independent of basic natal direction. a retrograde planet is generally bright (like a full moon is bright as opposed to new moon). retrograde planet internalize the energy of the planet. Typically the retrogression of jupiter is less bad than venus. most depend on where they are retrograding
any planet retrograde in its own sign becomes very strong representative of that sign and the effects are intensified
retrograde planets also show eccentricity or unusualness in the general characteristics of the planet. example mercury generally represents communication. hence a retro mercury can show too much or too less talking etc

    • Baskar says:

      VS ji,

A retrograde debilitated planet … Will it act like an exalted planet?

  52. Sundar says:

    Dear VS,
Can a planet be in marana karaka sthaana when posited in its own house or MK?
Example, Pisces asc, Budhan in Virgo?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

yes marana karaka sthana is a bhaav concept and is not dependent on the sign. mars will be marana karaka in 7th regardless of what sign as an example

      • Sundar says:

VS, in Obama’s chart, Saturn is in Capri Lagna and Budhan is in 7th. Both are in MKS but the yogas they form are strong. Is MKS secondary?

        • VS says:

Yes, MKS also does not affect the planet and or yogas themselves, they give some damage to the involved bhaav. Mercury in 7th causes some stress in marriage/ relationships and Saturn in lagna causes health issues. However in this case Saturn in own house and navamsa and hence sasa mahapurush yoga. Mercury’s depositor moon is exalted and dig balli in 5th. Thus overall the negatives are lesser than the positives. He might have some friction in relationships that is not obvious enough to the public

  53. Sundar says:

    Hello VS,
What happens when a dispositor’s dispositor in neech? Example Scorpio asc, Jupiter Mars in 9th, dispositor Moon exalted but Venus is neech? What happens to the 7th and 9th?

    • VS says:

its a good thought process, one has to learn to ‘follow the chain’ in horoscopes as in x as depositor of y and z is the depositor of x etc. this will show you the main planet or planets that ‘drain’ most of the palnets in the chart. This main planet(s) dignity and placement will be paramount in a horoscope. When this planet is very powerful, the strength of the entire horoscope elevates to some extent

  54. rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
I recently read b v raman book on notable horoscope.he mentioned that if all planets or most fall above the horizon that is from 7th to 1st house in a horoscope the success come late but this success is great and enduring..can you please give your words on this combination

    • VS says:

house 7th to 1st is the visible part of the horoscope. Any planets here manifest in the extroverted part of life for an individual. 9 through 11th also form the social life, career, social status, fame etc. Thus a lot of planets in the visible part will generally tend to make the individual famous in their life time as long as bad yogas are not present and/ or the palnets are not very weak in dignity

  55. rahul says:

Thanks vivek sir.one more question sir.do you consider conjuction between 2 planet less than one degree apart as graha yudh or intense conjunction?

    • VS says:

it is always an intense conjunction. War is technically true within 1 degree. However if the planets are friendly to each other and the 2 involved do not include the sun or rahu then I don’t think any real damage happens. within 1 degree of either sun or rahu can cause great distress to the concerned planet due to combustion or eclipse respectively

  56. rahul says:

    Thanks vivek sir

  57. Abhishek says:

Hello sir, what happen, cancer asendent Jupiter 19degree with ketu 6degree in lagna and saturn 0degree with rahu in Capricorn..can Jupiter nutrifie the effect of Shani rahu yuti..result of rahu mahadasha

    • VS says:

      marriage unlikely to remain OK
however the person can be a kind hearted soul with an elevated soul. depends on other planets as well. but just from what you have told above

  58. Guru says:

Hello sir what if it’s Taurus lagna and Venus exalted in 11th house of pices and Jupiter retrogrades in 6th house of libra making veeprith Raj yoga condition and lagna Lord and Jupiter exchanging houses but in navamsha Venus gets debilitated and Jupiter comes to lagna of aries navamsha is there Jupiter enjoying exalted energy of taurus or smth?

    • VS says:

wealth is likely in this combination but also health issues related to liver/ pancreas or reproductive region

  59. Shyam says:

    Hi Vs,

For libra ascendant if venus placed in 8th house of taurus along with mercury and sun..venus is compust within 1degree but mercury is not because its 15degree away from sun..would venus become weak and harmful for such a native

  60. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
Does the concept of sign exchange work in divisional chart?for example mars in capricorn and saturn in aries.how would these two planet behave in this situation?l mean to ask whether mars is exalted or in its own sign

  61. Ravi says:

    VS,

How would a Gajakesari yoga be for libra lagna which has Jupiter and moon together with rahu in 11th house of leo sign..according to books rahu and jupiter together in 11th house give massive wealth?

    • VS says:

rahu and Jupiter together can give expansion of that bhaav/ domain. the bhaav lord also needs to be strong for real effects to manifest and no other negative combinations should effect the combo

  62. Tanu says:

I forgot to mention it is for a virgo ascendant and I would also like to know if at the age of 20 rahu mahadasha is heavier than older age. Furthermore, virgo ascendant degree is 14 and Mercury is 14 degree in Taurus with sun and degree of sun is 3.

    • VS says:

hello, i dont do personal readings

however there is no such thing as “heavier” or not. Basic point is that if Rahu comes in at a young and immature age, the chances of it spoiling education/ career are much more as the mind is easily disturbed and lacking maturity to make correct decisions. However if moon and mercury are strong, then Rahu can not control the emotions and intellect and thus does not damage much

  63. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

Can an extremely strong planet according to Shadbala be considered equivalent to exaltation?

    Please let me know.

    • VS says:

exaltation means the planet at the finest of its general properties. Example mars exalted means the energy is disciplined, focused and dedicated and the temper and impulse as the negative parts of mars are controlled and channelized. if the same mars is debilitated and yet with very high shadbal in a kendra, it might give great material results and rise in profession or property depending on lordship and placement, however it might give tempramental issues and the person is likely to be short tempered, over emotional and impulsive. such behavior can lead to damage to his career or relationships/ health etc

      • Baskar says:

        Very nice explanation VS ji..

        Now I understand it better.

        Thanks again!

      • Sundar says:

Hello VS: I read the following in the web. Here it describes exaltation as being in “excited” state.
Own rasi of a planet (e.g. Pisces of Jupiter) is like one’s home. One is most natural and comfortable at home. That is exactly what a planet in own rasi is. Moolatrikona of a planet (e.g. Sagittarius of Jupiter) is like one’s office. One executes one’s formal job and performs one’s duty at office. One is powerful and duty-minded at office. Exaltation sign of a planet (e.g. Cancer of Jupiter) is like a favorite party/picnic. One is excited to be at one’s favorite party/picnic. So an exalted planet is like an excited person at his favorite picnic spot. Debilitation sign of a planet (e.g. Capricorn of Jupiter) is like one’s worst party. A debilitated planet is like an unhappy person stuck at a place he hates.
I am thinking..is planet in own home better than excited? What’s the difference?
        Can you kindly comment?

        Thank you.

        • VS says:

these are personal opinions of astrologers which is fine

exalted means the planet is the happiest in mood and very optimistic and positive. own house means it feels at home. MK means it feels as if its in it own place where it has to execute its main work. so the analogies are fine. either way a planet in any of the 3 conditions is happy and strong usually unless combust or in a bad house or deeply aspected conjunct by the nodes etc

      • AJ says:

Dear VS, for this same exalted Mars, if its retrograde, how would its characteristics change?
        Thanks
        AJ

        • VS says:

it will not become debilitated as some claim. however now it will become a bit hard to predict planet and can give sudden results at times. it will also behave a bit more like saturn. Any retrograde planet inlcuding rahu and ketu will act more like its sign depositor. So how well saturn is placed, where its placed, its shadbal and dignity etc will now become very important.

          • AJ says:

Thanks VS, since this exalted retrograde mars will behave more like its rashi depositor, will it also behave like the planet its conjunct with (just like rahu ketu do coz they are also retrograde)?
            Thanks
            AJ

  64. Mrugesh says:

    Hi VS,

How do we explain the seeming contradiction that planets sitting in same bhav are temporary enemies? Say 9th lord and 10th lord are Moon and Sun and doing a Rajayoga in 10th house in Leo. Moon and Sun are natural friends but then they become temporary enemies and hence we have to color the conjunction/Rajayoga as neutral. In fact, by this logic, any conjunction has some blemish associated with it, as it will bring down planets’ friendliness to each other. Then, how do we explain the results in each others’ MD and AD.

What is your view on this?

    Thank you,
    Mrugesh

    • VS says:

No such coloring. A raj yoga remains a raj yoga.
the temporary friend or not is really valid only in the context of dasa and antardasa combinations.

  65. Rahul says:

Does nichbhanga of any planet mean planet is posited in its own sign?

  66. Shiv says:

    Hello VS,

If in a chart of virgo Lagna…sun and ketu in 1st house of virgo and rahu in 7th house of pieces becomes vargottam in navamsa with rahu in 1st house of pieces lagna and sun and ketu in 7th house of virgo all in good dignity so would these 3planet give harmful results since ketu and rahu gaining strength in 7th house is bad for marraige and etc

  67. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
How does a planet behave after cancellation of debilitation

generally speaking a planet with cancelled debilitation will first give negative results related to its functional significations and then turn into a raj yoga for the same

    Hello,

For aries lagna if 4planets are placed in 6th house of virgo (sun 15.3deg), (sat 29.3deg), (mercury retrograde 14.4deg) and venus(07.05deg) which is debilitated but exalted in navamasa in 6th house of pieces…since all the planets are getting combust because of sun would any planet be capable of giving good results especially venus since its forming neech bhang yoga

    Hello VS:
For a Capricorn lagna, Dhanur Rasi/Moola with Ketu in Vishaka (Guru) in Tula but 11th bhaav, is a Cats eye even required? Is strengthening a malefic in the malefic 11th bhaav good? Thanks in advance.

  77. Sanjeeb says:

Regarding the temporal relationship, it is said that if a planet is in 2,3,4,12,11,10 house from it it becomes temporal friend. My question is if in the 1st house planet A is there with 0 degree and planet B in the 4th house in 29 degree, so technically they are friends, so they are separated by nearly 120 degrees, whereas if A would have been at 29 degrees in 1st house and B at 1 degree in 5th house, they do not qualify for friends, in this case they are separated by only around 90 degrees. I think we need to see the two planets in degree terms rather than the house numbering, but what would bethe degree range 120 or 90 degree(on either side) to consider a temporal friend ?

  78. Sundar Srinivasan says:

    Hello VS,
I have a basic question about malefic lords posited in kendras/Konas and vice versa. Example, the 8th lord sitting in the 9th or the 9th lord sitting in the 8th. In both cases, I think the level of damage to the 9th lord’s significations depends on its strength relative to the 8th lord and that’s all that matters. Do you agree?

    • VS says:

yes strength is most important. Also the domain is important. Not always is the 8th domain negative. example libra ascendant, the 8th house is ruled by venus the lagna lord and a benefic for the lagna. Thus mercury as 9th lord sitting in 8th in this case will not cause damage by itself and could actually give wealth depending on other factors

      • Saroj Mahapatra says:

Dear VS, according to BPHS Venus is neutral for Libra ascendant.

        • VS says:

one should never get too much into theoretical definitions as once you read more and more text, you might find some conflicting info as well. In general if a planets MK sign is in a kona (1,5 or 9) it will remain a functional benefic. If it is also a natural benefic like venus and its MK sign is in a trine, then it becomes very benefic of the lagna. However for each chart that is only a starting point. where a planet is placed, who aspects it and forms good and bad yogas with it, shadbal etc many factors eventually determine its final overall result

    • Saroj Mahapatra says:

Does that mean if 9th lord is much stronger than 8th lord in Sadbal, then it is not too bad?

  79. Abhi says:

    Hello sir,
I have a basic question regarding neech bhang raj yoga
In a virgo ascendant , mercury (24 deg) and venus(7 deg ) conjunct in lagna but venus is combust as sun(29 deg) is sitting in 12th house

Would the combustion of venus nullify this yoga, what result venus will give in this position.

    Thanks in advance.

  80. Vishal says:

    Hello Sir,
In Scorpio lagna…Rahu placement (26 degree) in 9th house and Moon in 6th house (28.10) what would be the effects of rahu Mahadasha…some says bad for father plus luck & Some says 26 degree rahu won’t give much bad results as moon also 28 degree…& said will do higher degree qualification. Thanks very much

  81. pirajesh says:

conjunction should be checked at Raasi or Bhava. If at Raasi conjunction of two planets promises a yoga but those planets are separated at Bhava will that yoga works out or not

    • VS says:

conjunction is active within approximately 12 to 15 degrees of a planet on either side. the closer the planets, the stronger the conjunction. If one planet sits as 29 degrees in taurus and another at 1 degree in gemini, they are still conjunct

How to calculate Retograde power of a planet. Is Jesta Balam and Retograde power or same.A planet with 5 binastavargam will give good results even if it is at it’s inimical sign

    • VS says:

its chesta bal which becomes high for any retrograde planet. however it is just one of many kinds of bal (strength)

      • prabhu says:

for Retograde yogakaraka which has BAV 5(3.25 is enough as per your statement to yield good things) Conjunction, aspects, placement at inimical sign or friendly sign ,overall dignity should be checked or itselfs bestow good results whatever the status may be?

        • VS says:

absolutely. just being a FB is not enuff. Ashtakvarga bindus when high help overall, however this is a secondary factor for a horoscope analysis and more relevant only for transits as opposed to general predictions. if a yogakaraka planet say shukra for capricorn lagna is placed with very high shadbal and dignity in say the 5th house of taurus and has just 1 bindu, it will still be very strong and able to give highly beneficial results in its dasa

  84. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Can NBRY sometimes work -vely? E.g. Kumbha lagna, Venus and Mercury in Pisces; 2nd lord Guru in the 8th maha-shatru house; 5th house not as heavily aspected hence the 8th’s karakatvas come more into play in the 2nd; The 8th in the 2nd not being a good position, does the NBRY make Mercury strong and creates problems for the 2nd (there is a parivartana between the 2nd and the 8th…)

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

NBRY does not happen in non kendra houses. Only Neecha bhang can happen. Raj yoga occurs only if the bhang is taking place in a kendra from lagna atleast and ideally from moon also. secondly the depositor of the neecha planet should be very strong in the chart and ideally a functional benefic. If the depositor is also a general benefic, then even a stronger raj yoga occurs

  85. Nimrit Ghosh says:

Will Vakri Graha Bestow subsequent success?

    • VS says:

sure why not, but not just because it is vakri or maargi, has to have the functional nature, placement and yogas for any good result

  86. Midhun says:

Aplanet with 3.38/5 Rupaas at inimical sign of hidden bhava with 5 bindus without any aspect will help the native at his profession forming Dharma Karma Athipathi yoga?

    • VS says:

if it is in beneficial yogas and or a FB planet, will still give good results, however these might be highly muted and low intensity. depositor planet will also dictate results, stronger the depositor of a planet, the better it is

      • midhun says:

Depositor means constellation depositor or sign depositor.which will be strong to judge the results.either constellation or a sign?

        • VS says:

I have said here many times. You have to look at the sign depositor then nakshatra then navamsa. All 3 have to be seen with most importance to sign then nakshatra then navamsa

  87. Nimrit Ghosh says:

Functional Nature means Benefic or Malefic.I.e Produce good results if a Vakri is Functional Benefic or Malefic?

    • VS says:

Fb means good bad or neutral by the house it rules in a chart. vakri (retrograde) has nothing to do with a planet with a FB or FM

  88. priya says:

    Hello

Will a Retro and Vargottama planet at 29’12″55″ in a signwill give the effect of it’s next house(sign) also?

    • VS says:

depends on the bhaav Madhya for that particular chart which is the same degree as lagna degree

      • priya says:

If Lagna is at 21’22’49”.will a Retograde planet at 29’12’25″in a sign will deliver the results of next sign as it is at the edge of that sign.Is any planet at the degree 29-30 it may be 29’01’01”-29’09’99″will indicate that native is connected with the past life and it strikes to do the past life incarcinations and pendings? Some articles refer that the planet in highest degree is almost dead.no use even if it in a yoga combinations.some articles says that almost it started to enter next sign so it delivers the results of next sign also….some articles says that it was connected with past life incarcinations. But as of i heard only Vakri planets is connected with past life pendings, incompleted wishes and all.so kindly can you clear my doubt as you had done a lot of research in this and acquired a cumulative knowledge

        • VS says:

it will not deliver the results of the next bhaav if lagna at 21 degrees. rest all is speculation and i have no comments on past life connections

      • Charlie says:

Sir, Do you mean that each house’s bhaav Madhya is the same degree as the lagna degree? But in Bhava Spashta (Sripati System), each house’s bhaav Madhya is different.

For a cancer Lagna/Moon Jupiter, Venus posited in the first. Rahu is in Saggi.
During the Venus Dasa, the lady developed cysts in the ovaries.
Jupter has a -ve aspect on Venus and venus is bothered by Moon. Venus is a FM being 11th lord. Is Venus’ position in a watery sign causing the issue? Also, Jupiter is aspecting Venus -vely; Jupiter is about glands and expansion. What is your your opinion? Thanks.

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

yes you have the correct thinking in this. also rahu is debilitated in 6th will definitely give diseases – hard to diagnose and not very easy to cure. jupiter as depositor of rahu is further blemished. jupiter will give both luch and ill health in this situation

  91. P Dhavan says:

Hello Mr. Vivek, what are the effects of Exalted Retrograde Saturn (conjuct Mars) in 9th house of D1 (Aquarius Asc (1 Degree 24 Mins), getting debilitated in 7th house of d9 (Libra Navamsa Asc)? I mean why does it happen that Saturn in it’s deep exaltation gets debilitated in d9? Your revert shall be highly appreciated. Thank you!

    • VS says:

it happens because in D9 saturn is in aries so debilitated in D9 but exalted in D1…saturn in such a scenario still remains a benefic and other influencing planets will dictate its complete result

  92. Mitesh says:

    Dear sir ,

In Cancer Ascendant , if mars is placed in 7th house with 29 degree , will it give results of 7th house or 8th house ? In such case coral can be wear or not ,, if only financial aspect is concern ?

    • VS says:

it will give results are per the bhaav not rashi. so if lagna degree after 15 then it will give 7th bhaav results and if not then it will give 8th bhaav results as per the chalit chart also known as the bhaav chart

  93. Mks says:

If in bhaav chart, Saturn moves from 9th house to 10th house for a Gemini ascendant, then:
1 During its MD, Saturn will give results only of 10th house (and not 9th house). Is this correct.
2 I think Saturn’s aspects, rashi, etc. don’t change due to Bhaav chart, so during its MD, Saturn will give results of 9th house/lord also as well as its aspects on 11th, 3rd & 6th houses. Is this correct.
    Thanks

    • VS says:

      1. yes
      2. Its aspects don’t change but when it aspects aries from aquarius, the exact point of aspect will also have moved the bhaav as Saturn has moved the bhaav (equal bhaav system). so if Saturn is in 10th bhaav, it is now aspecting 12th, 4th and 7th

      • Vidya says:

One follow up on the above –
If Saturn does not move in chalit chart, but only the sign is changed in chalit.
Eg- Saturn is 9th is D1 in Aquarius. Saturn still remains in 9th in Chalit chart but the sign mentioned in chalit for 9th and 10th is now Pisces. And Aquarius is not in any bhav in Chalit chart.

What is the significance of putting the sign number in a chalit chart? How does it effect Saturn’s results?
        Thanks!

        • VS says:

‘if saturn does not move in chalit chart but only the sign is changed in chalit’

that is not possible and doesnt make any sense. the sign never changes only bhaav changes as per degrees. chalit chart means a bhaav chart. for illustration purposes, the chalit chart will or will not show a different rashi there depending on what software u use. couldnt be simpler – rashi is what it is ..if aquarius in D1 then the planet can not magically become pisces under any circumstance. only which bhaav is it in can change as per the lagna degree and the planet degree

          • Vidya says:

I use Astrosage. I have also seen it in JHora. I dint want to use my personal chart so went with the same example.
My rising lagna was ~27 degrees and my saturn was in ~15 degrees.
In my d1 chart saturn-rahu is in 10th in simha. In my chalit chart, saturn-rahu is still in 10th as denoted by Sa(5)&Ra(5) in the 10th bhav, but they put 6(virgo) for bhavs 10 and 11. 9th is marked with 4(cancer). And 5(simha) is not marked in any bhav(meaning sun does not own any bhav in my chart). It feels more like KP.
So why do they put the rasi numbers in a chalit chart – Is there a purpose for putting 6 in 10th and 11th bhav?

          • VS says:

saturn is in 10th rashi and bhaav, not moving anywhere

it seems the settings are of porphry or sripathi bhaav system where each bhaav is not of 30 degrees each. in such a scenario say sripathi system, the bhaav madhya of 2 consecutive bhaavs can fall into one sign
its not very complicated, but you have to get to the root of simple mathematics in various systems. its ok not to delve too deep while still in early stages of learning

      • Mks says:

        My follow up question:
So if Saturn moves to 10th house (from 9th) in Bhaav chart, then how it will affect the raj yoga formed for the Gemini ascendant in D1 chart (the most important chart) with Saturn in the 9th house having mutual aspects with Mercury & Venus (both) in the 3rd house.

        • VS says:

a yoga is a yoga. first understand what a yoga is- a combination of likewise planets example saturn merc or venus. the rashis will represent their dignity (happy or not, exalted, own house etc.)then bhaavs represent which bhaavs will be activated

if you keep looking for quick answers and answers that fit all sizes, you will never be able to predict anything and i feel you do have the ability to learn as long as you actually do case studies. why not look at 100 horoscopes and find out for yourself? thats the only way to learn this art

  95. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
If a planet, say Jupiter, occupies 5th bhaav in D-1 but the 6th in Chalit. I understand that Jupiter will give the effect of the 6th bhaav during its Dasa/Bhukti but colored by the 5th bhaav’s rasi. How about transit activation? When this planet gets activated by a transit, it’s effect will show on the 6th bhaav, yes?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

D1 and chalit are not different divisional charts…they are the same rasi chart. so jupiter can occupy 5th rashi and 6th bhaav but not 5th bhaav in D1 and 6th in chalit, that makes no sense

as for yogas, transits etc. look at the exact degree of any planet…anything within 12 degrees both sides will be its zone where effects come

      • Sundar says:

VS, I meant shifting of Bhaavs due to Bhaav Madhya. Say Kumbha lagna 4 degrees. Guru sits at 20 degree in Gemini. In D-1 it is in the 5th bhaav but in Bhaav\Chalit chart it is in the 6th.
So my question was: During the Dasa/AD of Guru, it would give the effects of the 6th but colored by Mituna Rasi and Mercury, but would it give the effects of the 6th not only in Dasa/AD but also when it gets activated by a transitting planet.
Where am I going wrong? Please correct, many thanks.

        • VS says:

‘In D-1 it is in the 5th bhaav but in Bhaav\Chalit chart it is in the 6th’

Again that is where the problem is. this statement is wrong. in D1 it is in 5th Rashi and 6th bhaav.’

          D1 chart = Rashi chart
D1 chart in context of chalit = bhaav chart

D1 and chalit are not different charts by themselves and D1 is also called the rashi chart

  96. Mks says:

VS, Yes I have been doing case studies mainly on people who I have known personally for decades. So I am learning, but need help from experts on the way every now & then.

In the Gemini asc example above, if Saturn moves to 10th (from 9th) in bhaav chart & then aspects 12th/4th/7th instead of 11th/3rd/6th, then the raj yoga formed with Venus/Mercury in 3rd will not exist anymore. This is somewhat confusing. It seems that yogas, aspects, exaltation, debilitation, etc. remain intact as per D1 and don’t change due to Bhaav chart. Bhaav chart only activates the significations of the Bhaav for a planet that move in there. Your thoughts please

    • VS says:

no its not confusing at all. the raj yoga is not existing due to any chalit effect or lack of it. it will exist if in the first place the planets are within 12 degrees of aspect to each other. so if gemini ascendant at 15 degrees lagna and mercury is 3 degrees in leo and saturn is 25 degrees in aquarius, none of the 2 planets will change in the chalit chart and yet the yoga will be minimal as it is a 22 degree seperation from perfect opposition.

      • Mks says:

To make sure I understand correctly:
1 If Gemini Asc at 8 deg, Mercury at 3 deg & Venus at 4 deg both in 3rd house, and Saturn at 23 deg in 9th house. So it seems raj yoga is formed due to Saturn, Mercury & Venus aspecting each other within 12 deg on either side. Is this correct

2 Now, due to bhaav chart Saturn moves to 10th house from 9th, Saturn in its MD will give results of 12th, 4th, 7th houses with raj yoga effect, and NOT AT ALL of 11th, 3rd, 6th. Is my understanding correct

        • VS says:

          1. how are they 12 degrees in this case? they are not. only mercury and venus are. not with Saturn

          2. There will be mixed effects, no such ‘NOT AT ALL’

          • Mks says:

1 I said 12 degrees above because I consider “both sides” from the planet degree which is based on the statement made above “as for yogas, transits etc. look at the exact degree of any planet…anything within 12 degrees both sides will be its zone where effects come”. So 23 deg +/- 12 deg would be 5 deg/11 deg and since venus/mercury are at 3 deg/4 deg, they will be in Saturn’s effect zone to form raj yoga. Does it make sense.

2 Will the effects of 12th/4th/7th houses be more that that of 11th/3rd/6th since Saturn moves to 10th house from 9th in bhaav chart

          • VS says:

if venus and mer are 3 to 4 degrees in leo and Saturn is 23 degrees in aquarius, how does this fall in 12 degrees orb of opposition?

I keep telling you the effects will be mixed and you keep searching for a quick cookie and one size fits all theory. astrology doesn’t work like this. you can not just cram up rules and predict. rules are just for starting. real astrology in context of predictive (phalit jyotish) is learnt via sheer case studies. One has to do 1000s of horoscopes and you will answer your own questions. thanks

Also, what does this signify for me and how can I can improve this conjunction to my benefit.
    Please comment.
    Thanks

    • VS says:

Saturn has a lower degree ofcourse at 13 as opposed to 22 of Rahu
generally such a combination in 2nd house is not good for marriage or family life of the individual but the horoscope in totality has to be seen for a final conclusion. since it occurs in the sign of sun, strengthen sun for a better result. thanks

    • VS says:

Happy new year to you as well!
this combination is called the Angarak yoga and makes a person aggresive and bold in general. in positive format, it is good for sportsmen, competition, law enforcement/ police/ army etc. in negative format it can make a person cunning and cruel and very aggresive like a rogue or a criminal even

      • Asena says:

Thanks a lot for your reply.
And what would be the effect on it of supposedly strong /Capricorn/ Saturn/&Ketu/ opposite Mars&Rahu? Would it somehow rectify the Angarak combination or rather make it worse?

    Regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

no such rule with late or early rising degrees. The degree become the sensitive point of each bhaav considering the equal house system

some systems are non equal houses – like porphry or sripathi etc. to a beginner, i advocate equal house system only and not the other systems as they are more of a research topic for now

    Sh. VS, Pl. clarify following:
    1. How to Judge Functional Malefic Exalted / in Good Dignity placed in Good house?
    2. For Dignity: Should we give equal weightage to each parameters like Permanent friend, temporary friend, exalt / debilitation etc. or What is the most important weightage?
    3. How to judge Good dignity planet in placed Dusthana ? Will it be good or bad? And good and bad for what – i.e. House it deposits, house it owns or Planet’s own characterstics / karakatva??

Pl. help to bring insight. As once basics are clear, one can understand further.

    regards

    • VS says:

      1. FM for any lagna can not be exalted in a good house. good usually is 1,5 and 9 only. kendras can be good or not, depends on many things.

for the other factors, you have to look at the sign, friendliness or not, divisional placements etc

      • BNP says:

Can Dignity alter result of Functional nature of the planet? Can we say a FM in good dignity can give good result / reduce malefic results?

        • VS says:

it can not alter the generic or functional nature of a planet. However strong and well placed planets will tend to give good generic effects and strong effects of the houses they rule

          • BNP says:

Thanks VS ! This means it is good to have 3/6/8/12 ruler debilitated / in enemy sign? Or it will make the bad results more worse?

          • VS says:

generally good to have a 3 6 8 or 12 debilitated but still it should not be very close to bhaav Madhya of a negative house like 6 or 8 or 12 as then it will cause severe distress in health, wealth or other areas of life

  103. Romeo says:

  104. Sundar says:

VS, is there a logic to FMs doing better in konas and not kendras? Something about them being Lakshmi sthaana? Secondly, do they do better in Upachyas (if not exalted, example Guru in the 3rd for Taurus) than Konas?
Appreciate your insight as to the logic behind that and/or your observation over the years.

    • VS says:

when any planet is exalted, the agenda it carries of the houses it rules is amplified. if the agenda is of negative houses, it is not a good thing in general even if it will also signify that the general characteristics of that planet will flourish too. but functional over rules general

any planet in its dasa always gives results of the bhaav it is placed in first and foremost. lakshmi sthaans, 5th and 9th are always the most auspicious signs and hence by default planets in them tend to do good…but important that the lord of the 5th and 9th have to be strong and well placed for this to work

I recently suffered a career setback that has affected my health because of taking a a risky decision based astrological advice given by two astrologers. Infact, till date about 95% of the predictions even from professional astrologers have been wrong.
Do you think I should wear both emerald and ruby?

    • VS says:

generally avoid clashing stones. If you are gemini ascendant, go for green emerald only and not Ruby. Sun will be a malefic functionally for the chart, no point in strengthening it

    Hi VS ji,

Coming back after a long time here. How r u?

I have a quick question. Mars treats Saturn as neutral whereas Saturn treats Mars as enemy as per permanent relationship.

Can I infer that Mars aspect on Saturn may not be detrimental to Saturn?

Saturn’s aspect on Mars be detrimental to Mars and its Karakatwa / Aadhipaty in the chart?

    • VS says:

no such generic rules. Generally Saturn aspect on mars will ‘exalt’ it in a way so is good, mars aspect on Saturn will ‘debilitate’ it and hence is negative

  109. Baskar says:

    Bhava dispositor Vs Rashi dispositor:

    VS ji,

When we try to find the planetary dasha effects, we look at its dispositor’s placement, dignity etc.,

Do we need to analyze the Rashi dispositor or Bhava dispositor ?

  110. Baskar says:

Sorry..seems like my questions were not fully shown above for some reason .

When we look at the dispositor’s placement etc,, do we need to look at where the dispositor is placed in Rashi chart to analyze exaltation, etc ( or ) do we need to look at the dispositor’s Bhava placement ( or ) both?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much.

    • VS says:

You should always analyze the rashi depositor. After all that is the planet holding the said planet

      • Baskar says:

Thanks VS ji.. Do we need to Analyze the Rashi Dispositor’s Rashi placement ( or ) / and Bhava placement ?

Thanks much for clarifying my questions.

        • VS says:

you need to analyze the overall dignity of the planet and its depositor. this includes multiple factors including rashi, bhaav, divisionals, shad bal, residential strength, yogas, avayogas etc.

  111. Sumitra says:

Astrologers keep talking about 5th Dhrishti and navam dhrishti being bad and good and so on. Is the Dhrishti of each planet predefined ? Like saturn always has Dhrishti on 3rd, 5th 7th (just examples ) ? So can you show me the Dhrishti of each of the planets as to which house it aspects ?

    • VS says:

you can read that in my articles as well as any vedic astrology book/ article online. Saturn aspects 3, 7 and 10th not 5th. only saturn, jupiter and mars have special aspects. All other planets aspect only at the 7th bhaav

    Dear VS
I have two questions re MK of Ketu: (1) Given that Rahu and Ketu are apposite of each other, for own house and exaltation, could we therefore conclude Ketu’s MK is in Capricorn and Leo? (Given that Rahu’s MK is in Cancer and Aquarius?) (2) What does MK of Ketu or Rahu signify? Will they be less malefic when in MK, or will their effects be stronger and depend on bhav?
As always, much appreciate your wisdom.
    KRS

    • VS says:

      (1) yes
      (2) its not about good or bad. that will depend on what that rashi is. example capricorn is yoga karaka rashi for taurus. the placement of lords of these rashis as well as other aspects or conjunctions on the nodes will dictate the results

that said, generally for capricorn as venus is both functional and generic benefic, strengthening it can not harm in theory

  118. Mrugesh says:

    Hi VS,

I am kind of confused about how to ascertain relative strength of Rahu versus Saturn for considering phalit ownership of Aquarius. It will be great if you shed some light on this example. Libra lagna, Rahu conjunction in 10th with Mars. Saturn in 12th conjunct with Jupiter and Venus. It is confusing for me as both are equally good in divisionals and Saturn is good in Shadbala. Only blemish is that it is in 12th in D1.

Who do you think will dominate as owner of Aquarius? I tend to say Rahu as per your teachings as Cancer mooltrikona+10th house.

    Thanks,
    Mrugesh

  119. Igor verdnik says:

    Dear sir
I have Jupiter at 29,2 degree (7th in Dhanus) and Saturn at 0,4 degree (8th in Makara). One is finishing work in 7th house another begining in 8th house. I got so many different opinions and I am very interested on your opinion.

    Best regards
    Igor

  120. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir,

Jupiter being a great benefic, how does it behave if it’s retrograde in it’s own house? Especially if jupiter is lagna lord also.

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

jupiter retrograde in own house will become stronger and if a functional benefic as well will tend to give excellent results, though after some delay

  121. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Is Guru LESS debilitated at 1 degree (lowest point) than at 6 degrees (he is one degree above than highest point of debilitation)?

    • VS says:

in practice any planet approaching its lowest degree is much weaker than the planet separating and going ahead. Jupiter at 6 degrees will certainly be better than jupiter at 1 degree approaching its fall and also as it will be debilitated in navamsa as well at 1 degree

  122. Slk says:

    Hello sir,
Stumbled on your website, while searching some answers for my own horoscope . Firstly, great work you have done over here, truly inspiring. I am interested in learning this art out of desperation to learn about oneself , but i am confused with degrees and numbers, some say it’s the Dasha period and others the birth chart and navamsa chart, I am really not understanding anything, It would be really be helpful if you can shed some light from where to start

  123. Shishir says:

    Hello sir,
If a lord of a house(own house) is Placed exactly opposite in a kendra , does it hold any meaning/ significance ?
To be exact , Gemini Ascendant with Jupiter in 1st house is placed opposite to Sagittarus, which contains Saturn , and also since both are enemy to each other, so does it mean it may cause lot of hardship on native ?

  124. Parshu says:

  125. Sundar says:

Hello VS, for a mesha lagna and vrischik rasi, Mars in makar rasi but 9th bhaav, Saturn in kumba rasi, how does moon in the eighth in this case?
    Thx

    • VS says:

depends on aspects on moon and how bright it is, brighter is better, otherwise a debiliated moon in the 8th bhaav is terrible and can cause arishta

  126. Asheesh says:

Hi VS, if natal Jupiter is debilitated in lagna in Capricorn, not making any positive yoga, would it produce always negative results in transit?

    • VS says:

any debilitated planet can give health issues related to the bhaav it is placed and the organs/ areas of body it represents. secondly, a debilitated planet in kendra can regain power if the depositor of the planet is placed with the planet or strongly placed in the chart. any planet in its dasha will also dispense results of planets conjuncting and aspecting it

      • Sundar says:

VS, if I may, Asheesh is asking about a debilitated natal planet’s transit effects. I think you have pointed out that generic nature should be mainly considered subject to some extent the functional nature and the strength of the natal planet, since dasas and transits meet the promise of a natal chart. To add, in this case, slow moving planets including Jupiter that transit over the debiltated Jupiter within a few degrees will activate the bad effects of natal Jupiter unless there is NB. Kindly publish/correct/delete

  127. Parahu says:

    Hi vs

Transits should b seen from birth chart or moon sign chart?

  128. ravi says:

    Hi Vs
If a planet moves from D1 to another house in Chalit chart. How we should view Temporary Friendhship/Enemy of that particular planet, from D1 Chart or Chalit Chart?

    • VS says:

in theoretical definition its rasi chart that is used for this
for any rashi interchange always use rashi chart
for actual position of 2 planets, use the degrees or bhaav chart

  129. BNP says:

    Hi Sh. VS,

Does Exaltation and Debilitation is to be interpreted in terms of (1)strength and weakness of giving its functional results respectively OR (2) Positive and negative effects? Or (3) does it only relate with the karakatava of that nature?

    • VS says:

to some extent all of the above. generally speaking a debilitated planet is not able to protect the significaitons of the houses it rules, especially its mooltrikona sign

      • BNP says:

        Sh. VS,

Will exaltation and debilitation also affect the Signification of the planet itself? E.g. Debilitated Jupiter may result in issues related to child and exalted Jupiter can increase possibility of child etc.? Or Exaltation and Debilitation is only to be connected to the houses being ruled?

i needed to know if venus in 3rd house for gemini asc. at 6 degree can be good for clothing business ? mercury is in 5th alone at 12 degree. rahu n moon conjunct in 2nd house. sun jupiter and saturn in 4th house.mars is in 6th house and ketu in 8th making a kaal sarp yog chart venus is of magha nakshatra and asc. nakshatra is aadra. moon in ashlesha nakshatra. plz do guide me about career choice as its confusing between service and business of different choices.

  131. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Guru lagna, exalted. Ketu in the 8th as well and aspected from the 2nd by saturn. I have 2 questions:
    1. Since Moon does not carry a blemish as the 8th lord, it’s a good position for Guru, am I OK about this? Moon is in Libra.
    2. Does the presence of Guru in the 8th offer “protection” for ketu’s bad position when Saturn transits over natal saturn and and also aspects ketu? Saturn and Ketu are within 115 degrees. Saturn is a mild FM for Guru lagna, but posited in the 2nd, he acts like a neutral 2nd lord.
    Thanks.

    • VS says:

this can certainly be a good combination for money, assets and inheritance. if the overall dignity of juptier is good (shad bal) etc. then materially it is great. Health by itself can be sensitive and the chart has to be seen closely to eliminate short/ medium life due this 2-8 axis activation and moon being neecha abhilashi as 8th lord. if moon is dark and in a bad navamsa or swati nakshatra it can be troubling for health/ longevity

      • Sundar says:

I believe since Jupiter is Jeev shakti, he does offer some protection from aerial accidents etc due to Ketu’s position.
        Thanks again.

  132. narayan says:

    Dear Sir,

Can you please let know the effects for Sun MD and Mercury AD period. Also will the latter give results for 6h and 9h together.

    Thanks and regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

hello sir, it is impossible to say without a detailed analysis of the entire chart. however in general such a sun can give good results in career/ business after some initial struggles and through the help of women/ wife/ partnership

  133. Rahul says:

    Sir
Venus in 12th house leo sign has less shadbal strength so is it appropriate to wear diamond?

    • VS says:

yes no harm in wearing a stone of a functional and generic benefic planet. diamond is not a stone that will usually harm, even if it does not do much good.

  134. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Does a neech planet spoil the bhaav it sits in cos it’s unhappy there?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

to some extent yes. however if the neecha planet getting strengths in other ways and or neecha bhang and the bhaav lord is strong and well placed then the damage is not deep
its worse if the planet is also maran karaka. then it damages the karakatwa of that bhaav

  135. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Like anything precious, the more difficult it becomes to get, Guru’s (jeev shakti) max exaltation is 5 degrees and Saturn (general maraka) is 20 degrees..assuming FBs in both cases. Even at 20 degrees a FB saturn can do only so much good as compared to a FB Guru who can do wonders at 5. Also to note, for an Aquarius lagna, exalted saturn is in badak sthaan, for taurus sits in the 6th and for Tula in MKS despite being YK. Only for Makar, exalted shani is a decent position. For both Guru lagnas, its exaltation is good (a little -ve for saggi due to 8th).

    Just a thought..

  136. SiKumar says:

    Dear Sir,
For a Libra ascendant, if Saturn (13 deg), Mars (23 deg) and Mercury(19 deg) are placed in the 11th house in the sign of Aquarius, and Rahu is in 8th house in Scorpio debilitated, does this mean Saturn and Mercury Mahadashas will not give good results because Rahu is aspecting this house.

  137. Ashish says:

Sir, how powerfull rahu be at 2 degree of Taurus. ? My second question is how powerfull mercury be at 24.5 degree of scorpio. ?

    • VS says:

there is no such thing. power of a planet is a function of many factors. shadbal gives 6 factors, likewise there are many more. You have to review books that deal with planet and bhaav strength to learn and understand the mathematics behind the same

  138. Ashish says:

Sir, they say that moon is exalted at 3 degree of taurus. But they also say that any planet is most potent at 10-20 degrees according to awasthas. Then how it is possible that moon is not most strong(exalted) at 10-20 degree of taurus but at 3 degree of taurus..?

    • VS says:

balaadi avasthaa is one of dozens of ways in which a planet’s power is determined. so its weightage is not more than 1 out of 20 or 30. Too much emphasis on it is not good

  139. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
This link shows retrogression / combustion in the sky with animation: https://youtu.be/6z9NsU2x360.
It depicts that retro Mercury and venus can be combust, the other planets cannot be both.
Please comment on the Venus and Mercury part.

    Thanks a lot,

    • VS says:

      Hi
didnt get time to watch the link but any internal planets (between sun and earth) – venus and mercury can obviously be both (Physics perspective and degree-longitudnally) when they are close to the sun as retrograde

Likewise the outer ones – mars, jupiter and saturn will be retrograde only when far enough from the sun

so in that sense yes saturn/jup/ mars can not be retro and combust both as they are retro only when far enuff from the sun
from a phalit jyotish perspective is different. that depends on what the astrologer believes in. I believe that venus does act combust in retrogression while mercury does not (through experience)

  140. Jane says:

Is there a concept like Kaal Sarp Yog? As per an astrologer my son’s horoscope has this? What is your take on this ? And a big thank you for sharing your knowledge with so many people around the world. May you be blessed in abundance.

  141. Anusha K v says:

Could you plz tell me Jupiter in Capricornus at 22 degree debilitated.

    • VS says:

Jupiter is debilitated in the entire sign of capricorn by general definition. However that said, its deepest point of fall or 0 power is 5 degrees in capricorn and hence its severe debilitation only includes 0 to 5 degrees in capricorn. Once it crosses the 5 degree mark, it slowly starts to gain some power. purely mathematically, it is not debilitated at 22 degrees anymore, however realistically speaking, it will remain weak as it is still only 17 degrees away from its point of lowest power

      • Reena K says:

        Dear Sir,

I’m thoroughly confused about my chart, and wanted an answer about my debilitated Jupiter as it’s causing me a lot of internal worry and turmoil. I’m a Sagittarius Ascendant, with Jupiter in the 2nd house, at 27°32 in the Dhanishta Nakshatra. Will that reduce the debility in any way or increase it even further?

Secondly, with a debilitated Jupiter in the 2nd house, I have Saturn and Ketu sitting in the 4th house, and Moon and Rahu sitting in the 10th house. According to my research online, if Saturn sits in houses 1,4,7 or 10 from the lagna, that’s the condition for the Neechbhanga Yog. Is it applicable in my case?

Any response would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

        • VS says:

As jupiter is not in a kendra itself from lagna it can never be fully neecha bhang. it is also not being aspected by saturn (depositor)

unless mars or moon are conjunct with jupiter in this case, there will not be a neecha bhang of jupiter, although saturn in 4th helps a little bit

  142. Vishnu says:

    Dear Sir,

Moon is placed alone in revati nakshatra, and aspecting the 9th house of virgo which is empty.

    Hi,
As you mentioned that Permanent relationships are not mutual would you be so kind and add missing relationship of Mercury with Mars and Jupiter please.
    Thank you!

    • VS says:

Mercury considers Mars as Neutral, Mars considers Mercury as an enemy
Mercury considers Jupiter as Neutral, Jupiter considers Mercury as an enemy

      in terms of permanent relationships

      • Rahul says:

        Sir
Placement of Mars and Jupiter in virgo or gemini can be considered as neutral?

        • VS says:

depends on placement in terms of bhaav and mercury the owner etc. the relative placement of planet with its depositor will dictate the temporary friendship of mars or jupiter with depositor mercury
overall result is a combination of permanent and temporary relationship

  144. Rahul says:

    Sir
Jupter in virgo and Mars mercury in Gemini
In this case if we take both permanent and temporary relationship (4-10 axis) all the three planets can be considered as friends?

  145. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

Jupiter considers mercury as enemy but mercury considers jupiter as neutral. How about if they are in each other’s houses (e.g. jupiter in virgo and mercury in sagittarius), would Jupiter give average result or relatively better results (considering only this sole factor)?

    Thank you🙏

    • VS says:

both are generally benefic planets and hence their interchange of rashis is considered good. The bhaavs involved should be good (kendra or Kona) and then the results will be very good

  146. Pranab ray says:

D/Sir, how would be moon mahadasha

My 2nd question is when Venus and
mars in Virgo and sun ,Jupiter and mercury in Libra for Saggitarius asc., whether debilitation of Venus and sun will be neutralized. Awaiting a reply please.—-Pranab Ray.

    • VS says:

unfortunately, these type of questions are specific and there is no way to answer them without seeing the entire chart and that is not something I do here

  147. Ari says:

    Namaste sir
    Great website, learning a lot.

Small Q: As per the permanent + temporary friendship system, does it not make enemies/neutrals of all planets in conjunction with a planet? If friends saturn and venus are sitting in one house, since 1st house from a planet implies temporary enemy, wont that friendship be neutralised always? So then how is a conjunction powerful

    • VS says:

the relationships are more important in context of mutual dasa analysis and not overall analysis if two friendly planets are placed in a good bhav, they will remain a strong positive factor for the chart

  148. Promila says:

    Hi VS

The logic behind temporary enemity/friendship between planets is not clear to me: 2,3,4,10,11,12 are temporary friends, where as 1,5,6,7,8,9 are temporary enemies.

    Question:
    1) however 1,5,9 houses are really auspicious as the rest of the astrology teaches us. So why are planets there considered temporary enemies? This seems very counter intuitive
    2) Even when we judge Mahadasha results etc – we say if MD-AD are in 6-8 its not good, but if they are in 5-9 then it is good in generaly, so why would the planets sitting in 5-9 to each other or conjunct each other (1 relationship), consider each other as their temporary enemies?
    3) So is it that temporary enemy concept is not very important (in the pecking order) and can be ignored in analysis?
    4) In your experience does this temporary enemy concept work and is important, or do you generally go by the permanent friendship/enemity between planets?

    Best Regards

    • VS says:

the concept here is something different than just whether 12 is a bad house or 1-5-9 are good
planets in 1-5-9 from any planet are in the same DIRECTION. which means that they are going to work towards the same aspect of life. think of this as 2 coworkers sitting in the same room for conjunction or same floor for 5-9 and in general it is hence not a free flow of energy of the 1st planet as it will be modified by the other planets in 1-5-9 from it. if planets are friendly this wont be bad but still the energy of first planet is a bit disrupted by the other planets

when in 6-8 the energies of the 2 planets is completely blocked and in a different direction completely causing mismatch of energies and hence a negative situation also

in other combinations the energies of 2 planets are flowing independently and not interfering nor blocked like 6-8 and thus give temporary good results

    • Sundar says:

This is an awesome question and VS’s reply has clarified this concept

  149. Mayuresh D Amdekar says:

    VS,

Hope everything is ok at your end in these tricky times.

    A question:

Does strength of the planet differ from the dignity of the planet? An example, will an exalted but functionally malefic do good or bad ? When a planet is strong in shadbala, is it that it will give good or bad results based on it’s functional nature and other things like aspects?

    Mayuresh Amdekar
    MD, USA

    • VS says:

dignity is a subjective word but used more in context of purely the fact whether a planet is exalted >mooltrikona>own sign>friendly sign>neutral>enemy>debilitated analysis. which is just high level crude way to judge a planet

when any planet is exalted, it will always be positive for the general significations of the planet example imagination or compassion with moon etc. but if the planet rules negative houses like 6,8 or 12 then its strength can increase the negative impact of these houses as well. although 6 /8/12 are generally bad mostly from a materialistic gain perspective, not necessarily from a spiritual side. So all in all, one has to be careful before rushing to any conclusion

  151. Binay says:

    Hi VS,

Vigo lagna, Sa sitting in 12th house (Leo) ( no aspects (even partial) whatsoever at all) should one think on the line of strengthening Sa as it majorly carries the blemish of 6th house (Aquarious). And from 12th it’s aspecting its own house 6th as well?

So do you think one sholud wear “Blue Sapphire” in above case?

    Thanks in advance.

    • VS says:

no, i would not advise neelam in this situation

      • Binay says:

Thank you VS. That indeed is my understanding too but wanted to re-confirm as i am quite novice in this field.

Just one thing in the situation above where virgo lagna and 6th lord Sa sitting in 12th (LEO), i think this is kindda VPR as both 6th and 12th house significance are getting damaged here ?
No aspects to 6th house and no planet sitting there too.

        Regards,
        Binay

        • VS says:

yes it is indeed a vipreet raj yoga as well. however the 5th house gets damaged due to this situation. Also vipreet raj yogas tend to work only after an initial negativity/ struggle or stress. also as saturn is karaka of sickness and pain and rules 6th in this case, it can give frequent health issues and hospitalization in this scenario. materialistically it is good as will lead to loss of enemies and loans which is good

          • Aman says:

            Hi VS
I have a little doubt. The 6th house represents disease, debt and enemy. So the 6th lord in a bad house should mitigate disease and the person should be healthy. Similarly, if the Saturn is a karaka of illness, if it goes to the 12th house, then the illness should be mitigated. In both situations, the person should be healthy, rather than sick as u mentioned.

          • VS says:

even though your basic logic is not incorrect, one has to see much more than just good good or bad bad in terms of house ownership only

  152. abhi says:

Hi. Similar to a query Sundar (oct 24, 2018)posted about cancer lagna, I have one regarding a chart, with Ju+Mo+Ve in 9th/pisces. Ju and Mo almost 22 deg behind virgottam Ve. Ju combust as is Mo. Two malefic aspects on Ve by graha drishti. 2 by rashi drishti. Ve 4th in shadbal, Ju after it. Although nativity is good looking, moderately interested in luxury, i feel has refined to picky aesthetic sense, loves perfumery, decorations etc etc, but presents with romantic relationship (or lack of) issues, the other karakatwa of Ve. What else needs to be studied so I can roughly, although not in a vague manner, predict Ve MD for this nativity ?
Statically, I don’t see much of a conjunction, but I would like to believe despite being in same rashi, and in exaltation, Ju and Mo won’t cast negativity. Would you please comment on it?
    Thanks.

    • VS says:

i can not comment on it as I need to analyze a chart in detail properly before comments. I dont do individual chart readings here

that said, you have to look at all aspects on venus directly or via being exact trinal to venus and any planet one house ahead of venus also affects/ modifies venus. by itself venus is a mixed planet for cancer lagna as it is badhaka, enmical to lagna lord and being a benefic ruling a kendra, it is a malefic functionally. however being a mild planet, if exalted in a kendra/ kona, it will give good effects also

  153. MRG says:

    Hello VS,
Requesting your opinion on close conjunction of Saturn-Mars in Virgo for Cancer ascendent.

Saturn being FM is happy in Virgo but closely conjunct with enemy Mars. But here Mars is yogakaraka.

For Mars, it is in enemy sign and neutral planet.

Being malefics in upachaya it bodes well for longterm and gives fighting spirit to character of the native. But what can be said about marriage? As Saturn is with naturally separative but yogkarak enemy mars.

    Thanks and regards
    MRG

    • VS says:

in general when saturn and Mars conjunct, saturn loses power and Mars gains power

Also the career can have struggles and the individual rises by sheer determination and hard work. The person is seen as a fighter who perseveres against all odds in life but faces lots of opposition in life in general, especially in career related matters

    Hi VS,

When assessing a planets dignity, what importance do you give the nakshatra lords placement in D1 versus the planets D9 dispositor ?

    • VS says:

all planets and hence dipositors should first be seen in D1 with a higher preference and then in any other divisional including D9 or D60 etc.

  161. DvS says:

    Hello,
you’ve mentioned that Rahu is debilitated in Scorpio & Sagitarius and Ketu is debilitated in Taurus & Gemini, however I’ve read many times that Ketu is also debilitated in Virgo and Rahu in Pisces and even some online calculators suggest that (example: vedic-horo.com). Have you tested it, is this also your personal experience?
What do you think about the claim that Ketu is debilitated in Virgo and Rahu in Pisces?

    • VS says:

there is no clear concensus on the nodal exaltation/ debilitation rasis

My experience and belief has already been correctly mentioned by you in your question itself. in general rahu is good in the signs of mercury, venus and saturn and ketu in the signs of mars and jupiter and sun

there will still be a good yoga, just that mars and jupiter in their dasas will give effect of the bhaav placement more than rasi placement. a mix of 2 happens. example if a planet in the 5th rasi moves to the 4th bhaav, it will give results of 4th and 5th mixed in its portfolio of results but leaning more to the 4th

    Dear VS,

For a Libra Ascendant native would like to know how would Jupiter behave in 11th house of Leo..since it is lord of 2 upachya house and being placed in 11th house which is also upachya can such a jupiter give good results and suppose if rahu also joins this jupiter will guru chandal yoga in 11th house be negative since have seen in some books that guru chandal yoga in 11th house would be good for materialistic things

  165. Shrey says:

    Dear VS,

Would like to know if a planet is placed either in 5th or 9th house from a particular planet does it act like aspect or conjunct and generally a planet placed in these houses act good during the said planets mahadasa..like suppose if venus is conjunct mercury in 2nd house of libra for virgo native and jupiter placed in 6th house..here jupiters aspect would be bad or good for the native since jupiter is a malefic planet and in bad house

    • VS says:

the 5th and 9th from any sign is the trikona (trine) and these rasis act in tandem. Any planets placed trinal to each other will act together and hence work as if they are in conjunction. However they are physically not in conjunciton ofcourse and hence effects wont be same as conjunction, rather they will work together in a good or bad manner for the native

I have saturn in 10th house in Aquarius with 1 degree. Can i get the proper result?

    • VS says:

I dont know sir, you will need to see your entire chart to understand that. By itself, saturn in MK own sign is obviously great as well as the fact that saturn in this position will be exalted in navamsa

  167. Pankti Shanghvi says:

    Hi VS,

For Aries ascendant, venus is a maraka planet as it rules 2 and 7 house.

If it is debilitated at exact 27 degrees in Virgo making it debilitated even in navamsa, does it actually work out better as it will weaken it’s ability to harm or kill?

    • VS says:

Generally a deeply debilitated planet is not good as it is unable to protect the significations of the houses it rules. however if mercury in this scenario sits in virgo itself and relatively close to venus with both being non combust, then venus will attain neecha bhang and both planets can give good results as they are mutual friends

      • Pankti Shanghvi says:

In the Aries chart I was discussing, mercury is in libra while Venus in Virgo, so does the exchange between the two cause neechbhanga?

          • Naman says:

            Dear Vs,

In libra ascendant kundali if someone has venus (26.5)mercury(3)and sun(25.5) in 8th house of taurus and here venus is combust but in own house and in navamsa it is debilitated in 8th house of virgo..here venus is combust and debilitated but vargottam at the same time(in same bhav 8th house in lagna and navamsa) can such a venus give any positive results..your guidance will be really helpful..thank you

          • VS says:

I can not speculate based on tidbits of data and I dont provide personal chart readings

However generally speaking, yes a venus which is in own house and is combust can still give good results for sure

    Dear VS,

Can venus in 8th house of taurus ever give good result..because generally lagna in 6,8,12 is considered bad..thanx

  170. Tanisha says:

    Respected Sir,

    1. Is it true that planets are better off in their mooltrikona sign than exaltation sign ?
    2. Does having 4 malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) in their exaltation signs makes the native’s life full of challenges ?

    Thanks & regards,
    Tanisha

    • VS says:

there can be no general answers which are like one size fits all

it all depends on the overall individual chart. generally more exalted planets is not a bad thing, even if they are generic malefics

      • Isha Jangir says:

Jupiter in Sagittarius sign in 5th house but with a degree of 29.48
Will it act as a debilitated Jupiter of Capricorn sign of 6th house?
        (For a leo ascendant)
Will it make the children tough to handle, spoiled, also will this Jupiter give disability to children?
Will be really relieved if you could satisfy my query on this placement of Jupiter.

        • VS says:

if jupiter is alone it can give bhaavo kaaraka naash in such a situation of being virgottam in its own sign in the 5th house. overall effect will depend on the aspects it has and if it is bright (away from sun) with good aspects, it will good

  171. Ravi Siva says:

    Hello VS Ji,
Regarding retrograde, you mentioned that retrograde planets behave like Rahu/Ketu and behave like the depositor and conjunct planets. My understanding is Raju/Ketu behave like the depositor since they don’t have their own house. Seems conflicting? Also, if planets are retrograde in their own house (ie Jupitor in Pieces, Venus in taurus, Mercury in Virgo), how will these behave?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

yes the nodes dont have a house and thus behave only as per position. however any retrograde planet also behaves likewise. It doesnt mean it sheds its house rulership effect – just that it behaves more according to its conjunctions/ aspects

  172. Karthik says:

    Hello VS,

Does the conjunction of exalted and debilitated planet reduce the strength of exalted planet?

    • VS says:

to some extent yes but not always. for example cancer lagna and mars and jupiter in the 7th bhaav. mars is exalted and jupiter debilitated. since they both friends and also friendly to the lagna loard moon, aspecting the lagna, they will give raj yoga. although many things have to be seen, generally jupiter in this case will give excellent results and mars will give good results. reason is that any planet in its dasa gives effects of planets that conjunct it, aspect it fully or are trinal to it and in this particular case, jupiter debilitated in kendra with exalted mars will attain neecha bhang raj yoga. if saturn the depositor is placed well and aspecting this combination, it is even better as saturn will further exalt mars in its exaltation and will it will further increase the neecha bhang component of jupiter

  173. Punita says:

Hello Sir, Firstoff all thanks for your blog and this planetry dignity tables.

I m lost. I am pisces ascendand and moon venus in pisces. Venus is 2.3° only.
Will venus give me no results ? Since venus exalted means it should give luxury, love, venus carrer. But it doesn’t happen

Or I should accept fact that Venus will not give memuch results as my venus is exatled but only 2° ?

Please let know what results venus gives when exalted only 2.3° ? Since peek degree is 27. Therefore so much difference in my venus.

    Please let kmw

    • VS says:

venus by itself exalted in lagna is good. however the yogas and aspects it receives is also important. secondly for pisces venus rules the 3rd and 8th and hence is a top level functional malefic. thus is 1st it can give wavering health and health issues due to romance/ relationships or indulging in too much pleasure seeking activities etc.
