12 Houses & Their Significations

This is where the basics of astrology start. The 360 zodiac divided equally into 12 divisions of 30 degrees each. Each division is called a sign. Starting from Aries and to Pisces. Each sign has a ruler (planet) and some planets have a dual ownership (of 2 signs)

‘Planet’ in vedic astrology stands for a heavenly body in consideration. Not all of them are real planets by the Physics definition. Sun and Moon are taken as planets and not as a star or satellite respectively.

The 9 main planets considered in vedic astrology are – Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus & Rahu and Ketu. The last 2 are not physical entities. These are imaginary points in space where the axis of moon and sun (relative to earth) overlap. These two entities are hence mathematical calculations as opposed to the other 7 objects which are observable entities in space. Rahu and Ketu effect a horoscope and individual strong enough to be considered as independent planets themselves. These are by definition always 180 degrees from each other.

Next step is the 12 houses. Each house represents/ rule over multiple things in a person’s life. These houses are called as ‘Bhaavs’.

Regarding ownership, when a planet rules 2 signs, one of its signs is its main or more important sign and the other is the lesser one. This is a relative concept, regardless of which the planet involved presides over both the signs. The more important of these is called the ‘Mooltrikona’ sign (MK in short from here on)

Rahu and Ketu do not own any signs as they are not physical entities. However they are co-rulers of some signs as mentioned later. They also act as ‘shadow planets’ implying they mirror the effects of planets they sit close to and signs they sit in.

Signs & their ownership-

Aries – Mars (MK sign)

Taurus – Venus

Gemini – Mercury

Cancer – Moon

Leo – Sun

Virgo – Mercury (MK sign) & Rahu (co-ruler)

Libra – Venus (MK sign)

Scorpio – Mars and Ketu (co-ruler)

Sagittarius – Jupiter (MK sign)

Capricorn – Saturn

Aquarius – Saturn (MK sign) and Rahu (co-ruler)

Pisces – Jupiter

The 12 Bhaavs (houses) represent hundreds of things each. Hence this list below is not comprehensive but aims at pointing to at least some important significations of each of the bhaavs-

1st House – The person themselves, head, hair on head, skull, brain, skin, general health/immunity/ vitality, overall wellbeing and success, place of birth, general characteristics of person physically, general characteristics of a person mentally (behavior wise), thinking and the mind, Power or status (or lack of it), starting or beginning of events etc.

7th Bhaav – Relationships, how we relate to people, legal contracts, Business, partnerships, marriage, spouse, married life, foreign places (opposite of 1st bhaav of birthplace), foreign residence or a residence far from birth town, external sexual organs, sexuality, sexual habits, large intestine and anal area. ‘Maraka’ place (killer place, or house that has potential to end life)

8th Bhaav – Transformations, obstacles, turnarounds in life, sudden events, tragic accidents, serious accidents and injuries, deep emotions and turmoil, death and death like events, denegerate habits like addictions to drugs, alcohol, smoking, hidden things, occult/ metaphysics and interest in same, deep research or deep dive analysis of any area (trying to uncover hidden things), regenerate habits – detachment from materialism or success, loans or unearned money like legacies, inheritance, Change of lifestyle/ residence/ job or other activity, mental anguish and despair/ hopelessness, internal sexual organs, anal area, testis area for males, Chronic or long term disease, incurable disease, terminal sickness. Death.

9th Bhaav – Father, Guru, Boss/ employer, Destiny, luck, Higher education, Higher education institutes, universities, temples, research, crystallized intelligence – this implies belief/ religion, spirituality, meditation, long distance travel, foreign travel, good deeds of previous lives, Blessings and divine help, House of wealth (Laxmi), abstract thinking, crossing intellectual boundaries into new cultures/ beliefs/ faith, foreign residence, publishing, import-export, Hips, thighs, tailbone area

10th Bhaav – Career, job, status in life, Public life, external manifestation of our work, Fame, prestige/ honor, rise in life, Karma (our actions), energy levels at work, Image at work, Government, recognition from Government, Powerful positions like politicians/ CEOs/ Director of institutes, Management related positions, Knees and middle portion of legs

11th Bhaav – Gains, Income, Rewards from work/ job, promotions, wealth house (especially fluid wealth), long term desires/ goals and their fulfillment, elder siblings, ears and hearing, social circle, friends, social interaction, desires and ambitions, recovery from disease, ankles and lower feet area, prize or recognition from authorities/ Government.

12th Bhaav – Loss, expenses, letting go, isolation, imprisonment, loss of movement (hospitalization), loss of freedom (imprisonment), deep emotions, grief/ sadness, hidden life including sleep & sexual/ bedroom activity, foreign residence, far off-isolated places, dreams, meditation and meditative state, spirituality, lack of materialism, Moksha, long distance travel and settlement, hidden strengths and weaknesses, hidden enemies, intuition/ psychic visions, feet, left eye for males and right eye for females,  hospitalization, hard to diagnose diseases, sleep related diseases like insomnia, somnambulism, etc.

So above are some important things that come to mind regarding each bhaav, as I said this list is not comprehensive by any means and each bhaav might represent dozens of other things in a native’s life.

Also important is to note that the 3rd and 8th bhaavs are the bhaavs of ‘Jeeva Shakti’ (Life force) and 12th bhaav is a bhaav of loss or ending. Hence 12th to any bhaav is the loss of that bhaav. Thus the 2nd and 7th bhaavs (being 12th to the 3rd and 8th bhaavs respectively) are ‘Maraka’ or killer houses. Similarly as 9th house is house of good luck and destiny, 12th to it or 8th bhaav is the bhaav of destruction and bad luck.

With many other caveats, safe to initially assume that houses 1, 5 & 9 are good houses which give health, wealth, blessings, good luck, education/ wisdom, status etc.

1,4,7 and 10 are called ‘Kendra’ or in the Center or important houses as they rule over most of the vital things in our day to day lives

Houses 6,8 & 12 are called ‘dusthanas’ (or bad houses) as they represent things which oppose us and give us agony, losses, grief and pain.

Another way to look at bhaavs is in respect to our relatives. Example the 9th is the father. Hence a person’s 10th house will be the 2nd house for the father and the person’s 1st house will be the 5th house for the father, etc.

After this top level approach to signs and houses. Next I will write about the basic significations of the planets themselves, after which one can start running some gears in their heads. For example Sun signifies father among hundreds of other things. Since 9th house also signifies father, when sun rules or sits in the 9th house in a horoscope, the effect of father are now very strongly being represented by Sun.

Hello Vivekji – I m not satisfied by the way my career is shaping and wanted to analyze my chart’s potential in terms of job status, fame and rise coupled with financial status. Since I am not satisfied in this front I am putting lots of effort in learning new things but somehow things don’t work out for me. It could also be possible that I m not putting in persistent effort and lack patience. This is also the reason why I m not able to devote time to further my interest in astrology.

If possible could you please share some link that I could follow and analyze my chart’s potential in terms of career.

    Thanks for your time.

      Hi Varun

What I am planning to do is to make some case study videos in the form of screen cast and post the links here.
This will be quicker and more efficient than writing longer articles.

I believe learning theory is always better in text whereas learning case studies can be more efficient with me doing screencast videos while explaining a horoscope on the software

      Stay tuned

Is the Bhava/Chalit chart acceptable according to BPHS?

      • Sundar says:

        Sri VS:
If Jupiter is sitting in the 7th in D-1 but moves to the 6th in B/C, does this mean the houses aspected by Jupiter are original minus 1 ?
I have also heard that this change affects only the Dasas when Jupiter will bring the significations of the 6th (quarrels etc) to the 7th house and cause issues in relationships.

The latter seems more “palatable” to me because the former would mean changes in the functional natures as well.
        Thank you.

        • VS says:

functional nature doesn’t change. Bhaav placements affects dasas and weakens any bad or good yogas caused by the planet as the bhaav is shifting. for example if 2 functionally benefic planets combine in 9th rashi and are causing a raj yoga, but the planets shift to 8th in the chalit chart, then their power decreases (for causing raj yoga). Doesn’t mean they will become completely negative, but the yoga will reduce significantly in power

  5. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Does the nakshatra lord play a significant role (as compared to the asc lord)?

    • VS says:

      Yes
Always a good practice to see the ascendant nakshatra in addition to sign lord. The strength and placement of ascendant as well as moon nakshatra lord is important in the chart. Sign lords will still dominate. Only the KP school of thought, which is a very recent astrological school of thought believes that Nakshatra lord is more important than sign lord.
Sign lord always more important that nakshatra lord which is more important that any divisional lord

for any horoscope, look at the bhaav itself (Planets sitting or aspecting lagna) then look at the dignity of sign lord, then nakshatra of ascendant lord and finally the dignity of navamsa lord of ascendant in D1 (the lagna in D9). For example ascendant at 3 degrees in Taurus

look at venus first, then sun then Saturn in the above example. All 3 will dictate the power of ascendant and hence the overall horoscope

      • Sundar says:

Sri VS: Quoting “The strength and placement of ascendant as well as MOON nakshatra lord is important in the chart”. In the Taurus 3 degree example Sun is the lord of Krittika (ASC nakshatra lord). Please clarify..thanks.

        • Sundar says:

Sorry VS for my earlier question:
You have stated that “The strength and placement of ascendant as well as moon nakshatra “. Your Krittika example is talking about the ascendant nakshatra. I was led to think that the moon nakshatra is probably invalid in this context just because your example did not cover it. I understand what you meant.

        • VS says:

yes that is correct for sun in the given example

      • Amit says:

        Hi VS

When you say ” nakshatra of ascendant lord “, you mean lord of Nakshatra where ascendant falls?

For example: for a Gemini ascendant at 17 degrees, with Mercury in 3 degrees Pisces, you mean we should check strength of Rahu (lord of Ardra) and NOT lord of Mercury’s Nakshatra (Purva Bhadrapada, so Jupiter in this case)? Is that right?

        Best Regards

        • VS says:

nakshatra of ascendant lord is the nakshatra wherethe ascendant lord is deposited.
Nakshatra of lagna is where the rising degree lays. both these nakshatras and their lords gain special significance and should be monitored closely in a chart

  6. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
If saturn is sitting in the 8th house (Taurus asc, in good dignity), I have heard that Saturn (significator of fear) seated in the 8th (fear, emotional turmoil) removes the fear. If true, is this a positive effect due to Karaka Bhava Nash? I heard the same about Mars in the 6th..

    • VS says:

yes true, but only if the dignity of the planets is good. For example mars in virgo or saturn in leo will not give your results but quiet the opposite

  7. Sundar says:

VS, I realize that this question is a little hazy, kindly clear it up for me. When I look at chart that gives me the Bhava bala, I see one based on SAV in D-1. I see another based on Shadbala. The latter one makes me conclude the bala is not based on just D-1. Does it mean, for example, the bala of the 3rd house in D-1 also includes the bala of the D-3 (if there is such a thing?). Please bear with me and clear this mess in my mind.

    • VS says:

this is a deep topic, which can not be covered by a few responses.

if you wish to learn this in depth, please read “Graha and bhaav balas” by BV Raman. You can find it on amazon and Scribd perhaps

  8. Sundar says:

VS, I have heard that Saturn’s (in good dignity) aspect on the 6th will prevent separation in marriage due to its disciplining effect. Is this correct? Is this different from it sitting in the 6th house (especially if it’s the 7th lord). Thanks.

    • VS says:

saturn’s aspect on 7th might give discipline in marriage but it has to be a strong and well placed saturn and 7th lord also good. if 7th house is also affected by sun or rahu along with saturn, then its bad
saturns placement in 6th house will give problems in marriage

  9. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
I read that the 8th from the Upapaada lagna (arudha from the 12th house) gives a pointer to the longevity of a marrital life. Is this correct? If so, assume that the 4th house from Lagna (taurus) has mars (manglik) and the 8th from the UL happens to be the 4th house; how would I assess that?

    • VS says:

8th house from UL can be used to see the general longevity of marriage but more in context of the life span of the partner…cant answer your particular question as there are hundreds of things to be seen. So please stop asking such questions like what does mars do in Taurus or 4th or 8th from somewhere. It can do hundreds of things as you should know by now

  10. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
If the lord of the 6-th is Saturn and it not in good dignity, can it cause issues for maternal uncles..asking since even though it is the lord of the 6th it is not a karakatva for maternal uncles..

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

yes it can, but you have to see it from a perspective of what all aspects are there on saturn and on 6th bhaav and then on Mercury and 6th bhaav from mercury. net some will be the result

      • Sundar says:

Thanks VS. So, if you want to see how the n-th bhaav is doing, you will also look at n-th bhaav from where the asc Lord is posited? Is my understanding correct here?

  11. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
Does any planet do well in the 8th house? What is the 8th house is own or exalted?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

exalted mercury in 8th can do well

      • Sundar says:

Ss that because exalted Merc is very playful and will treat the dreaded matters of the 8th lightly? Curious…Thx

        • VS says:

no because it still remains a functionally good planet being friendly with lagna lord and ruling the trine of 5th house.
exalted in 8th, it will give great inflow of money due to aspect on 2nd and its karakatva being of money

          • Baskar says:

            Dear Vs ji,

A functional malefic sitting in the most dreaded 8th Bhava .. Is that the worst nightmare anybody can have?

Is there any remedies to tone down the effects of such placement especially if the running Dasa is also the same planet ?

          • VS says:

as always, no point in generalizing. if a functional malefic (owning bad houses) sits in a bad house, sometimes it can be a strong vipreet raj yoga as well. the other planets conjuncting aspecting or being trinal to this planet will also modify it
the depositors play a big role always etc. so nothing can be vaguely generalized as you know

  12. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
For an Cancer asc, if saturn sits in Capri, the 8th lord sits in the seventh, a pessimistic way of looking at it. What is your observation on this position? Does the 8th’s bad significations come fully into the seventh or…?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

in such a scenario, Saturn will give results of only the 7th house mostly and not 8th.
8th is neutral and since the planet sits in one of its houses, that house comes in focus. the spouse can be a self made person with a travelling job/ work profile. by itself if Saturn is not ill aspected by rahu/ ketu and not combust then Saturn will give good results of Sasa mahapurush yoga also in this case. the native’s spouse can have a long and successful life with a serious nature in life. Look at the planets in 1, 3 and 11 houses also. all these will affect Saturn, even if they don’t full aspect Saturn or 7th house

      • Aja says:

Such a Saturn in 7th is good for partner. As a malefic aspecting the lagna will it hurt 1s house portfolio (health, body, character)?

        • VS says:

any time a natural malefic aspects lagna but the malefic is in high dignity (own house or exalted) then it will not damage the health or character for the individual. Opposite for heavily afflicted malefic planets

          • Aja says:

Thanks for the answer. In this case Saturn is of course a natural malefic, but also the 8th Lord.

Can we say that the 8th lord (or 6th, 12th) if it is high dignity, and aspects the lagna, then it will not damage 1st house portfolio (health, body, character)?

          • VS says:

it might not damage, but still make the lagna vulnerable to the significations of these house. eventually all aspects have to be seen for a Net sum on lagna as well as lagnesh. If the lagnesh is strongly placed in the chart, it will protect against any malefic aspects. if lagnesh is very weak in the chart then the negativity will be able to over rule the benefic points of house 1

  13. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
I am able to understand the 4th from the 4th would represent the mother’s mother, 12th from the 11th is loss of gains, income. Correct me id I am wrong..

From a similar reasoning, can we would look at the 11th (from an ill-effects angle) as the 6th from the 6th? What would be the logic? Wouldn’t 12th from the 12th be a loss of loss, namely, gain? So, 6th from 6th would be obstruction to obstruction (removal of obstruction)?

You clearing up this tangle in my head is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

11th house is of gain no doubt
but it is also an evil sthaan. Monetary gain/ income/ materialism are the roots for a lot of evil in our day to day life. It is Kaam trikona – represents desires, which are the root of all evil

11th bhaav can always give gain in materialistic things – money/ income/ property/ relationships etc. but it can cause accidents, sudden negative events and ill health also. as per parasara, 3 6 and 11 are the evil houses and 11th is Most evil

  14. Adidam says:

    Sri VS,
Having bhagyakara planets (FB) for a particular lagna in 11th house does give better results than in 12th house, is this true?
say 3 planets in 11th house,no debilitated planets.
as you said 11th house is most evil ,12th is house of losses as well as evil house .How can we understand the above situation, when both are almost similar kind of houses with both positives and negatives.
    Thanks .

    • VS says:

any planet in 11th will tend to give gains related to the area it rules. 9th house in 11th is great, gives gain in luck, money, benefits etc. life is not black or white, it is shades of grey.

say a Prime minister of a country is assassinated. Ofcourse when he is PM, he is having great Raj yogas operate making him powerful, famous and rich etc. but what can be worse than death, that too violent and untimely

so if I ask you, was his time good or bad? likewise in life nothing is all good or all bad. it is relative and a person can have both type of periods operating at the same time…

  15. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:

  16. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
is the 2nd house from a house a maraka house? Like..is 8th house a maraka house for the 7th? If yes, what is the 12th from the 7th?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

3rd and 8th are houses of jeeva shakti or life
12th to any house is loss of it…so 2nd and 7th become maraka (death afflicting) as they are the loss of life houses

      • Sundar says:

        Should the 8th be strong?
8th is a dustana as well, so it should not be very strong from that angle. So, if the 8th is strong, one will have a long life, but will undergo the malefic significations of that house and understand that detachment will lead to moksha..is that correct?

Re: the 3rd house, is that better to have a strong 3rd than a strong 8th house? The 2nd is a more potent maraka than the 7th, hence asking.

        Thank you

        • VS says:

all lords are generally better to be strong than otherwise, just that dusthana lords should not be stronger than the kona lords in general

  17. Sundar says:

    Sri VS:
I notice that for Steve Jobs – Leo asc, Mars is sitting in the 9th. On first glance, I would expect he would have a good childhood. I was trying to see the indications for him being orphaned.
Moon is in the 8th, that might explain the mother part alone. Sun is in the 6th that could explain the father’s part.
In the Chalit, the lord of 4th and 9th, Mars, has moved into the 8th. Mars should not be seen as sitting in the 8th except for Dasa predictions, hence Mars’ position in the 9th remains and it is not the reason for his childhood.
    Kindly let me know…

    • Sundar says:

House counting is based in D-1 and not the chalit..that is really the crux of my doubt.

      • VS says:

Don’t know what the question is. If a planet sits in 5th rashi in Taurus at 2 degrees and is moving back in 4th bhaav in chalit, its aspect will still fall 180 degrees from it. Meaning 2 degrees in Scorpio. Now the point of 2 degrees in scorpio will be 11th rashi but 10th bhaav. So keep these things separate. Understand the maths behind it for clarity

        • Sundar says:

In this example you have mentioned (Capricorn asc), if Sun was in 2 degrees scorpio, we’d have to view that as the 7th lord sitting in the 10th (the bhaav-chalit would show that), yes? Before the advent of software charts, when the lagna degree could not be known, Sun would have been read as sitting in the 11th bhaav and that would have been very inaccurate..yet, predictions could not have been that inaccurate. Kindly opine.

          • VS says:

again. you are not even trying to understand it seems. if it is a Capricorn ascendant. regardless of the degree of lagna, the bhaav Madhya of 8th will be in leo. Hence sun will always rule 8th house and not 7th!

        • Sundar says:

Sorry Vivek, I totally screwed up with my last question (about Leo being the 7th house from Capricorn.. no space to reply there, hence replying here); sincere apologies and thanks for taking the time to answer albeit a little harshly which is well deserved.
To finish this off with another question if you don’t mind:
In the above example, if Sun moved into the 4th bhaav (Aries) due to 2 degree position in Taurus, it’s the 8th house lord sitting the 4th and the 4th house being affected by Sun..yes?
When exact degrees of planets were not available 30 years back, were the interpretations wrong in these cases? Sincerely, Sundar.

          • VS says:

yes 8th in 4th. generally this will be bad as 8th lord is powerful (exalted) and will damage 4th house significations unless mars is strong enough to protect them. degrees were always available, even when parasari text was composed, perhaps not to minutes and seconds exactly but they were still available

    • VS says:

For very early childhood – moon and adolescence/ teenagers – Mercury is to be seen in terms of effects in young life. But this is generic and the actual yogas/ dasas will modify general results. Moon in 8th and to some extent 12th and 7th also can be dangerous for longevity, especially before age 27 in case moon is dark and/ or afflicted by Saturn/ mars/ ketu/ rahu in the chart and placed in 8th

  18. Sundar says:

This is about Rachel Maddows, MSNBC show anchor; “not” heterosexual.
Cancer asc with Jupiter and Mars (Old and modern karakas of husband) in 7th 3 deg apart.
7th lord Saturn, in Taurus is weak. Dispositor Venus Uchcha but strongly combust.
    Rahu – Ketu in 6-12.
Is the 7th lord’s dignity the pointer? Is Jupiter/Mars in the 7th a weird combination? or both?
    Please opine.

    • VS says:

this is a broad topic, not just as easy as mars or Jupiter.
in a generic fashion for deviated sexuality, one has to look at the 8th lord, 7th lord, 3rd as well as shani and mercury.
mercury is curiosity and experimentation and shani is perversion. Rahu is taboo breaking and odd. a combination of these planets/ rulerships affecting 7th and 8th bhaav and lords causes this predisposition in my research

  19. Sundar says:

Sri VS: A basic question regarding the 3rd and 8th house which are Jeeva shakti houses:
Does the 3rd house come under this category due to “sexual prowess and activity” which needs to be good to create children (5th house which is 3rd from 3rd) ?
Why does the 8th come under this category? Is it because of re-birth (after death)?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

3rd house is bhaavat bhavam of 8th or 8th from 8th. Hence it represents the life force as well. it is our initiative, courage, paraakram etc

      • Sundar says:

Very cool. It’s truly like communicating to a Guru and friend with you. You ARE my maaanaseeka guru in this ancient shastra. I hope to meet you someday and make a sambhaavana…

      • Sundar says:

        Sri VS:
Speaking of Bhavat bhavam, for example since 2nd to 2nd is 3rd. 2nd is wealth, 3rd is about effort; Does this mean that results of 2nd is (or is it could be?) a function of the 3rd?
From a dasa/bukti angle, 9th from the 9th is the 5th, so during the dasa of the 9th lord, can one beget children?

        • VS says:

yes both 9th and 5th can give children
3rd is wealth thru sheer self effort or self made wealth. generally not good to have 3rd lord stronger than the 2nd. because that implies more effort and less wealth. same way as 12th should be weaker than 2nd and 11th for good wealth/ money

          • Amit says:

            Hi VS

You mean the lord or the house? If 3rd lord has higher shadbala than 2nd lord, but bhav bala of 3rd house is less than 2nd house – would this mean less effort, more wealth or the opposite?

            Best Regards

          • VS says:

overall bhaavbal and shadbal of the owner of the house are both vital to see. they have different but related calculations. 2nd should be higher than 3rd for a person to accumulate wealth with ease or in terms less effort so to speak

  20. Sundar says:

Vivek, if the lord of the 6th and 3rd sits in the 8th, the 6-8 results in VRY, however, the 3rd in 8th is not the best position. In this case, is it better for the 6th lord to be stronger than the 3rd ?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

is good for wealth, bad for health. if 3rd lord in 8th is afflicted and 2nd lord is stronger than 3rd, then short life could result due to sickness or injury (6th)

only mercury or jupiter can be in the position mentioned (that same planet owns 3rd and 6th) If it is Aries ascendant, MK is 6th and consider this to be 6th lord in 8th. If its libra ascendant, then consider 3rd in 8th as 3rd house is MK

      • Sundar says:

Vivek, 3rd is self-earned wealth and 8th is inherited wealth, yet 3rd in 8th has a common “wealth” thread?

        • VS says:

Not really. The 3, 6, 8 and 12 are houses which deprive us against the general comforts, wealth and other materialistic things in life.
if they are weaker than the 2,5,9 and 11 then riches can be expected. these lords related to each other give vipreet raj yoga. which can give comforts/ riches after initial struggles and even sudden wealth

  21. JD says:

    Hello VS,
You are doing a great job by answering to the curiosity of so many people around the globe. We all are very thankful. I have following scenario to discuss. I would really appreciate if you spare some time and answer.

For Capricorn sign born in D1 chart every planet is situated in 12th house counted from its position. Eg.

Venus lord of 5 and 10th in 9th house. So 10th house in 9. 1st in 12th house
Mercury lord of 6th and 9th house in 8th house. So 9th house in 8th house. 1st in 12th house
Sun lord of 8th house in 7th house. So 1st in 12th house.

I have read some where 1st house lord in 12th (dusthana) is very bad. How should I interpret it. Is there any remedy to alleviate this?

    Thanks and Regards,
    JD

    • VS says:

generally it is better for the owner to go one house fwd than backward
however it all depends on the lord and bhaav involved. For example venus as karaka in 9th even though debilitated is still 5th and 10th lord in 9th and if shad bal of mercury is good and venus is not combust and more than 10 degrees away from its deepest fall at 27 degrees in virgo, then venus will actually give great results in 9th

likewise you have to consider overall horoscope and not just one or 2 factors. once we are born, we can not ofcourse go back and change our chart as per our liking. hence we should learn to live with the pluses as well as minuses. After all, that is what Jyoitsh means – guiding light, to make us beware of potential issues. astrology and no astrologer can actually change any one’s destiny, just inform them of potential future events

  22. Sundar says:

VS, Can 2nd from the Moon be the maraka lord? Sanjay Gandhi was killed in a plane accident during the Moon dasa/Merc bhukti. Moon is the 7th maraka lord sitting in the 8th and the 9th lord would be 2nd from Moon. If true, Merc being an airy planet would point to an air accident and Maraka lord Moon in the 8th would obviously point to the suddenness.

    • VS says:

in Sanjay Gandhi’s horoscope, the lord of 8th (accidents/ tragedies/ death) combines with ketu (karaka for fire, sudden accidents) in the 11th bhaav which represents air travel. Mercury will carry the blemish of 6th (accidents/ injury/ surgery)
all of this happens in the violent rashi of scorpio in the 11th bhaav which is the most evil bhaav and in addition is the baadhak sthaana for capricorn as well

      • Sundar says:

Ah! Since this happened in Moon dasa, does 7th lord in the 8th has no role at all? Meaning, as a concept, maraka lord in the 8th..is that a valid way of looking at it?
        Thanks

        • VS says:

moon in 8th is a classical alpaaayu yoga always. from 7th mid bhaav to early 9th bhaav, entire zone moon remains vulnerable.8th bhaav its marana karaka. meaning it destroys 8th significations of life force or jeeva shakti. further it is 7th lord (maraka) and deposits saturn the natural and functional killer (2nd ruler). Depositor of moon sits afflicted in 11th. sun is fire, never comfortable in a watery sign plus it is only 1 rashi away from its debilitation sign and hence not gained enough ishtha phal back

  23. Sundar says:

VS, can Rahu in the 12th cause sudden death? If true, if it is also a maraka lord, does it make the probablilty higher? I am looking at Rajiv Gandhi’s case. He was killed in Rahu dasa/Merc bhukti. Mercury and Rahu are 2nd maraka lords. Rahu is 7th (Aquarius) maraka lord as well. Mars (bombs, explosion) is aspecting the 8th and that points to how he was assassinated.

    • VS says:

Rahu saturn and mercury are marakas for leo
more importantly Rahu will act as per its dipositor/ conjunctor/ aspector etc. in this case moon. Moon is dark (amavasya) and near sun and jupiter causing both raj yoga as well as moon being dark and in a generic malefic sign leo and in a malefic nakshatra of ketu
ketu is the most explosive of all planets and represents accidents and sudden death. Sun and moon being lagna lords all sit in ketu nakshatra which sits in the malefic and violent sign of saturn in 6th bhaav of accidents. all the maraka planets also aspect aquarius (7th bhaav) which will be activated during rahu md. however sun jupiter moon will also combine the lords of 1 and 5 along with 12 and 8 all aspecting aquarius co ruled by rahu. Rahu hence gave loss (rahu/rahu gave loss of mother) but also raj yoga and also accidents/ death all in the same dasa

    • Sundar says:

Vivek, re: your detailed analysis, you have analysed with respect to the lagna, the posited planets and their affects on Aquarius during the Rahu dasa.
      In addition:
      1. You have mentioned Ketu’s 6th position in an enemy’s house. How does ketu come into the picture during the Rahu dasa/Mercury bhukti? Is the assumption that a transit at that time would have activated Ketu? Or may be you were pointing out the natal vulnerability in general?
      2. Re: Rahu’s 12th position that I had asked about, is that off the mark completely? I was thinking, 12th to self is loss of it and Rahu posited there could trigger sudden events related to death during it MD

      Thanks as always.

      • VS says:

rahu sits in moons sign and hence will reflect moon overall
moon is in ketus star in a yoga with jupter and sun. all jupter sun and moon are in the star of ketu which is also the lagna star and hence ketu will “funnel” the good and the bad in the patri

  24. Aditya says:

If Sun is delibilated in the house of profession, during the MD is alright to donate wheat flour or jaggery to a needy person. Any other remedies you would advise.
    Thanks and regards,

    • VS says:

yes donations are always good. helping a person in need is never going to harm regardless of the planet. In the said situation, donating jaggery is good

  25. jai says:

    Hi VS,

You are doing a great job by answering so many queries.

What remedy your would suggest for Sun (or Moon or both) which is lord of the 8th house(Leo) but sitting in 7th house (Cancer sign) along with Moon (Combust). which you said is ‘always bad placement of sun’.

    Thanks and Regards
    Jai

  26. Vishwajit says:

How can we interpret planet degrees in terms of strength? For e.g Guru at 4.27* or saturn at 22*.
Also when we look at MD and AD, do we take the median point. E.g. Sun MD (18*) – Guru AD 4.30* or saturn AD 21*. Can you please share your thoughts.

    • VS says:

strength is closeness to bhaav madhya. bhaav madhya for each house is the exact lagna degree

      • SJ says:

        Hi VS,
It would be really helpful if you can clarify/elaborate on differences between bhaav madhya and position in rasi. Since, avasthas of planets are based on actual degree and not bhaav madhya.

        Thanks for your input.

  27. Sundar says:

Vivek, if the lord of the 7th and the 12th sits in the 9th (or any other house), how do I know which house’s influence is more on the 9th? Is it the stronger of the bhaav bala?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

well it will give its general results (venus as a benefic in 9th is good) and secondly as 12th is neutral and MK sign of venus, venus will act as per its conjunction in the 9th
say if it conjuncts jupiter which in this case will be a functional benefic and exalted…then venus gives excellent results. Also if moon is say in 7th bhaav deeply exalted. Now venus can give laxmi in its own dasa or strong riches as its karaka of laxmi in laxmi sthana and will act as such. However if moon is weak and venus is placed there with say saturn which is also enmical sign and functional malefic, then this will bring early death of father or sickness to father and obstacles in destiny etc. so all depends on the total 9 planets, yogas and their strengths

  28. Sundar says:

Vivek, according to BPHS, 12th lord in 12th means the person can be vengeful, irritable and will spend heavily. On the contrary, it is also Vimala yoga. Assuming no aspects on the 12th, what is your experience?

    • VS says:

typically 12th in 12th if a natural benefic planet like jup, venus, mercury or bright moon, it doesn’t harm much and can give good expenses, charity etc. malefics can sometimes cause heavy trouble if afflicted or combust in the 12th house and the person might be involved in secretive shady or illegal activity

  29. Sundar says:

    Vivek,
For a Cancer asc, when Saturn & Mars in transit aspect the 12th house, is there a potential for loss of life during Mercury dasa? Mercury is 12th lord, Saturn is a maraka lord..

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

No such generalization. malefics have to be badly disposed as well as have malefic influences in addition to the correct kaal running
i dont recommend predicting lifespans for anyone

  30. Aditya says:

    Sir
Can you please share your thoughts on Mars transit of May 02, 2018 to Capricorn for 188days. How the transit will affect the moon signs.
    Thanks and regards, Aditya

    • VS says:

Generally Mars transit is good in 3, 6, 10 and 11th from moon and so good for Scorpio, Leo, Aries and Pisces signs
However look at the SAV bindus of capricorn for a particular chart if 30 or more and specifically look at mars BAV bindus in capricorn. if 4 or more in capricorn then the transit can be very good as mars is exalted in this sign. if natal rahu or mercury sit in capricorn, then mars transiting over them can certainly bring in problems as well.

in summary it all depends on each chart with all the planets and yogas and also the vimshottari dasa. if a person not undergoing level 1, 2 or 3 dasa of mars in this period, then the impact will be much more minor to them than those who are running mars maha or antar dashas

  31. Ritika says:

Hello, do u not do astrological consultation? What if someone has been really bothered by the turn of events or non activity?
    Reply is awaited

    • VS says:

      Hi Ritika,

No unfortunately I don’t do personal readings as this is not a full time profession for me. I get over 50 requests in private everyday. In the comments section I mostly delete them. If someone I will provide readings, I will make everyone know the same.

  32. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
I haven’t understood the exact meaning of Upachya bhaavs (3,6,10,11). I have heard “gradual improvement”.
Does the improvement happen across dasas/bhuktis of this planet or is it applicable only during the particular dasa/bukti, like starting from zero everytime.
Is the improvement applicable to money matters only, since these bhaavs are part of artha/kaama trikona?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

typically improvement implies over the life span of one’s life. But also within the MDs of the planets placed in these houses.
Usually good to have malefics here as opposed to benefics other than 11th where both are good. 3rd is courage, initiative, hard work, self effort etc. benefics here can make a person lazy and timid or too shy and give lack of focus in life and career.

6th house is enemies and hence malefics here imply a malefic sitting in their lagna which is good for the person who has a malefic in 6th. However if afflicted they will also give sickness and accidents or litigation. 10th is career and sun and mars and rahu here give powerful or administrative roles and a big image in society etc. generally malefics fare much better in these places as opposed to benefics

      • Sandeep says:

        Hi VS,
“6th house is enemies and hence malefics here imply a malefic sitting in their lagna which is good for the person who has a malefic in 6th”
By this you mean the enemy’s Lagna is the natives 6th ?

      • Karthik says:

        Hello VS,

I am bit confused on the aspects that get gradual improvement in upachya houses. I understand only natural malefics in upachya houses improve over time. Does it imply the below:

        1) If a natural malefic is also a functional malefic, only the generic significations of the planet improve, but the functional significations do not

        2) If a natural benefic acting as a functional malefic sits in upachya, its significations do not improve.

        Could you please clarify.

  33. Krish says:

    Hi Vs,

How does a benefic planet like mercury and venus give good results when placed in 8th house..have seen amitabh bhachan having mercury in 8th house and many other books saying venus and mercury give good results in 8th house..is it true and why is it so

    • VS says:

if planets are strong and functional benefics, they will give good results. in amitabhs case mercury is a functional benefic as owner of 5th and 8th hence becomes a neutral sign completely. it has an exalted mercury placed and cancelling neecha of venus too. benefics aspecting 2nd bhaav will show wealth and in his case exalted jupiter, exalted mercury and venus all aspect 2nd house. also saturn is in venusian sign and trinal to both mercury and venus forming many raj yogas being 1-5-9 lords

  34. AJ says:

    Dear VS,
Not sure if this question can be answered briefly, but since you are in investment banking, you must have done in depth research on this topic. Can you please share which houses and planets play a role for a person becoming a successful investor – full time. Are there any typical combinations that a chart must have? Also, will it be different planets / houses for investments in stocks, real estate, commodities, forex and PE type investments? Is Moon the karaka for investments?
    Thanks
    AJ

    • VS says:

Mercury rules all sorts of business and money transcations. Stock markets are also ruled by Rahu as speculation comes in with ups and downs. Jupiter rules money in general and hence jupiter and mercury combination can be great of business not just conjunction or opposition but in each others sign etc.

business and commercial world is ruled by the earth trine – taurus, virgo and capricorn. Virgo is the most commercial sign of all
the other sign of mercury – gemini is more communicative and educational than virgo which is more commercial and business oriented with seriousness

saturn and signs capricorn and aquarius rule the brick and mortar business world and rahu and mercury rule the internet and services sector

      • AJ says:

        Thanks VS,
So further to that, if i want to benefit by trading in copper futures, I will need to see if Mars (copper), rahu (speculation) and mercury (general business) are well place in my chart and if they form a relationship? correct? And Saturn (earth), rahu and mercury for benefiting in agricultural commodities future trading, correct?
        Thanks
        AJ

        • VS says:

you are probably right. However the caution is to not go too much into financial markets relying solely on astrology as jyotish was never meant to be utilized for this and infact Jyotish texts were written 1000s of years before the 1st stock exchange or any financial product market opened

  35. Baskar says:

    VS ji,

I have a question about rating the dusthanas.. All three of them viz., 6,8,12 are bad each having its on tone of evilness attached to it.

According to your experience , which one is the most evil?

    Please let me know.

    • VS says:

again this is a generic and subjective question. Like asking out of lust or greed which is worse etc. answer can be relative in context. In my experience the 6th is the worst astrologically as 6th is both an evil place and a dusthan
8th and 12th are neutral by definition. However they are blemished and hence the other house ownership as well as placement becomes vital and can save the situation. example gemini lagna has venus ruling 12th bhaav but its MK is 5th and hence overall Venus remains a highly positive planet if sitting strongly

6th lord is always blemished to some extent as its both evil and dusthana and represents pain of all kinds – physical, mental, financial etc

      • Shreyas says:

        Hi,

But Isn’t 6th house also an upachya house and planet placed in it whether malefic or benefic with time start giving good results??and what if a planet who is lord of trikona also owns 6th house does it give nuetral results or blemish of 6th house will always be there

        • VS says:

as I have said give more emphasis to the MK house. if a planet rules 9th as MK and 6th as other sign example mercury for capricorn, it will remain a functional benefic, however even as a benefic, it will remain a bit tarnished and not a pure yoga karaka like venus for capricorn

          • kodi0014 says:

            Hi VS,

In this case it would mean that Saturn for virgo lagna, even though friendly to Lagnesh, gives more 6th house effects than 5th. Which case would be better generally speaking, Saturn in 5th or 6th? One is trikona lord in own house, the other is in MK as 6th lord. From 5th, Saturn would aspect 7th, 11th and 2nd. From 6th would aspect 8th, 12th and 3rd (all bad houses).

          • VS says:

saturn will give mixed results for mercury ascendants. it is better to have a trikona lord in trikona always, even if it is a general malefic like saturn

  36. Rahul says:

    Hi vivek sir
Does placement of planets in kendra houses give strength to a chart?in one youtube video a guy is emphasizing that there should be only one planet in strength in kendra houses and other planets in kendra houses must be less in dignnity or strength to allow smooth functioning of the chart

    • VS says:

planets in kendra definitely give strength to a chart

I can not comment on individual people views, we are all entitled to have our own views

  37. ARINDAM MUKHOPADHYAY says:

    Sir,
1,4,7,10 are kendra houses, my if there are no planets in these houses?

    • VS says:

since only 9 planets and 12 bhaavs, some will always be empty. By itself not good or bad, the chart has to be seen in totality

  38. Rahul says:

Hi…for virgo lagna planet saturn rules 5th and 6th house with mooltrikon in 6th house so for virgo lagna saturn will give more bad results compared to good..and what if such a saturn is in 3rd house of scorpio..would sucha a saturn be good or bad since lord of trik house is in another trik house and 3rd house is also an upachya house…

    • VS says:

since 3rd house is also related to 8th house in virgo lagna, it becomes a very evil place. saturn is also very unhappy in scorpio sign and hence placement of saturn in the 3rd for virgo usually does not give great results

  39. ARINDAM MUKHOPADHYAY says:

    OK V.Sji

  40. Sundar Srinivasan says:

VS, in general, does 8th lord do well in the 3rd? 3rd is 8th from 8th, hence asking in general..
    Thanks.

    • VS says:

its bhaavat bhavam and hence effect will be strong. however say leo lagna, jupiter in libra is not great and can lead to a short life if other conditions present. so in the end the dignity of the planet as well as aspects on it are important to know

  41. Samhita Lokesh says:

For a taurus lagna person , Mars becomes lord of 7th and 12th. If it is debilitated in Cancer and combust being along with Sun , is the marriage doomed to failure. Please clarify , if debilitated and combust is a double whammy or is it actually good because negative + negative makes positive.
Also if a dustana lord is weak, is that not good ?
Please help me to understand the logic behind this scenario.
    Thank you

    • VS says:

for Taurus if mars is very weak, look at ketu first. Being the co lord of 7th house, ketu will take over the effects of mars. also look at the aspects on both mars and ketu as well as the 7th bhaav itself. if most to all these are weak, then marriage is likely to be troubled or absent

  42. UGESH says:

    Hi VS..

Could you please give your predictions for following details..

    DOB – 07/APR/1988
Time of birth – 11:25 am
Place of birth – Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh

  43. Anupam says:

    Dear Sir,

Does the placement of Saturn in 4th house (Taurus) ensures foreign country settlement and even at the same time 12th lord is also Saturn ?

    Thank you.

  44. narayan says:

    Sir,
If a person has moon in the 3rd house of pisces and its 7th aspect is on 9th house which is not occupied by any other planet. Can the MD be productive or less troublesome.

I have sun in Libra and jupiter in Taurus. During the md /ad period will venus have any external role. The rasi swami is venus.

    Thanks and regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

it will depend on all the planets that aspect the moon or cancer for net result, hard to say otherwise. Only thing that can be said is that moon is very bright and near 4th bhaav and near exaltation and hence strong

  45. Ramkumar says:

    Excellent clarity. Thank you.

  46. Siva says:

    Hi VS,

What’s your view on Retrograde planets ? Do they give reversals during their periods ?
E.g. Mercury Retro as 10th lord for Sagi asc. impacts Career prospects ?

    • VS says:

retrograde planets can give unexpected and sudden results and not always reversals. they also mimic the depositor and any conjuncting planet in the influence like rahu/ ketu

  47. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
How does Karaka Bhaav Naash differ from Marana Karaka Sthaana in terms of the effects on the bhaav and the planet? Please let me know if I am correct.
    1. Venus in 7th (BKN example), destroys the 7th bhaav’s significations as related to Venus, not the entire bhaav. Venus’ shadbal could still be strong and it can protect the lorded bhaavs.
    2. Jupiter in 3rd (MKS) -vely impacts the bhaav. In addition, the planet is weakened and fails to fully protect the lorded houses.

    Thanks VS.

    • VS says:

marana karaka is a place where the planet is completely uncomfortable like mars in 7th as mars is aggression and 7th needs compromise and patience. bhaavo karaka naash is where the planet generally gives intense results as it is the natural significator of the house as sun in 9th

      • Sundar says:

        Hello VS:
Jupiter in the 5th in own house may lead to lack of progeny. This is due to BKN. You are saying that bhaavo karaka naash is where the planet generally gives intense results. What is the intensity that causes no children? Please clarify.

        • VS says:

generally concept of Bhaavo karaka naashe is applicable only if the planet is in its own rashi and also alone in the bhaav
if jupiter in 5th is in a sign other than saggi/ pisces and/ or if it is not alone there, then it will not likely cause bhaav destruction/ delay

    Hello VS:
I can see 2nd house from the 5th house for values of children. So, if I am Taurus lagna, Budha becomes the first house of my children and I can see the strength of Venus and the 2nd house, arudha of the 2nd house etc.
And my question is related, but from a graha lagna angle. if I see 5th from Jupiter for children, can I then see the 6th from Jupiter as the 2nd house of my children like above? Just wanted to make sure.

    • VS says:

5th from jupiter should act in some manner like the 1st of the 1st born child and so everything from that sign can be analyzed as in any chart

  49. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
8th lord in the 3rd is not a good bhavat Bhavam is it? Death comes into the house of zeal, physical prowess etc.

  50. Narayan says:

    Hi VS,
I have 2 questions to understand:

    1. Dasha sandhi – a person begins to feel the good or bad effects of the upcoming MD a year in advance. Is it correct?
Is this applicable in case of an ongoing AD – few weeks in advance you begin to feel the good or bad effects of the upcoming AD period.

    2. If I need to calculate the MD /AD house distance – is more appropriate to calculate from MD to AD. E.g. for capricorn rising SUN is in libra (10th) house and saturn is in Cancer (7th house) – can interpret this as 1 /10 combination or look at them individually.

Can you please share your thoughts on this. Regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

Chidra dasa or the last part of any dasa will always start to intermingle results and hence depending on the planets and their strengths etc, the effect will be strong or mild to be felt
in the second case yes they will be 1-10 to each other but if as per degrees. example if sun is 1 in libra and saturn is 25 in cancer then they are actually 1-11 as per the bhaav system

      • Sundar says:

Hello VS: Is this about whether the AD lord is in a kendra/kona from the dasa lord?
If it is, Does this matter more than PF+TF relationship that the AD lord has with the MD lord?

        • VS says:

typically 5-9 is bad only if they are opposite natured planets like Saturn-mars. even then despite the temporal enmity, personal experience shows that 5-9 is never that bad. But then again say Saturn in 4th and mars in 8th, both really bad positions in the moksha trikona where both these planets do bad, then their mutual dasas can cause injuries, sickness or surgery/ accidents and in the worst case curtail life in a 5-9 position. So nothing completely generic can be claimed

  51. beiggy says:

    dear sir,
we are told that saturn is sitting shadi house of my close relative. And we are facing so much problem of her relationship issues… very young kids are there. So it is a big worry for me. Please suggest some upay.
    Thanks

    Dear sir,

  53. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For a male Taurus asc, lord of 8th (degenerate habits) and 11th is Uchcha in the 3rd. Lord of 3rd (sexual prowess) Moon is in the seventh (sexual habits) and reasonably trinal to Guru. Moon’s dispositor mars with 6th lord Venus in the 6th. Could this be a possible combination for bisexuality/homosexuality?

  54. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Is the bhaav chart relevant for D-9 and other divisionals?

    • VS says:

      mathematically yes it is relevant
I, however, do not recommend using it in that fashion as it will change very quickly with birth time and hence always unknown to some extent and secondly because that level of analysis is relevant only for the very advanced astrologer
otherwise students will end up in just confusing themselves and overtly relying on mathematics. eventually overall picture enables predictions and not just number and degree calculations. I have seen students who tend to only focus on the Ganit (maths) part become weak in the Phalit (predictive) part. So maths is very important but without forgetting the bigger picture

  55. Siva says:

    Hi VS

As per your comments above, understand 6th lord is most malefic.
    My queries
    1. If 6th lord is in 6th house, does it become more malefic ? E.g Venus in Taurus for Sagi Asc.
    2. If the 6th lord is combust, does it reduce or increase its malefic nature ?

    thanks in advance
    Siva

    • VS says:

if 6th lord is combust it can give more disease but less problems from enemies or loans. venus in 6th for saggi becomes a powerful malefic

  56. K.R. Subramanyam says:

    Dear VS:
I know you don’t do personal readings but here is something peculiar in my horoscope which I think would be general interest. That is, I have 7 planets (all except Rahu and Moon) in the 2nd house (Caprisorn). How does one interpret such a horoscope? Do we look at nakshatra placements? Do we examine Navamsa strength? Do conjunctions mean anything? Overall what is the effect of such a large conjunction? Will malefics “takeover” later in life?
Really look forward to your insights on this.
    Regards

    • VS says:

      Hello,

you were likely to be born around January 1962 I believe?
This is called Gola yoga (7 or more planets in one sign) and is generally not great. However it has to be seen in detail as to what planets are having dignity, which bhaav this occurs in etc.

if you dont mind, kindly paste the details here and, as you have mentioned, for the general interest, we can talk about it

      Thanks

      • KRS says:

  57. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
Is 7th lord is a natural significator of spouse? You have mentioned “Spouse” in the 7th house significations, hence asking..
For a Taurus lagna, if Mars is in the 4th, since , it is reasonable to assume the spouse could have anger issues?

    • VS says:

7th house is the other you. All relationships and legal contracts are seen from this house. Marriage is the longest legal contract we have and is seen from the 7th along with the other you – the spouse. this is true for the other axis as well. example 3rd is writing and 9th is publishing as its the externalizing of writing

  58. Varun N says:

    Good day,

From which reference point should we count these bhavas i.e., from Moon Lagna or ASC lagna ?

    • VS says:

lagna is always the most specific (fastest changing), 2nd most relevant is arudha lagna as it changes as fast as lagna and in the materialistic world of today, Maya is important
next is moon lagna as it changes every 2.25 days and last is sun lagna

  59. Varun says:

Hello VSji – Good day! Sir, what can be said if most of the Leo Lagna’s positive (Jupiter, Mars, Moon, and Sun) and neutral(Mercury) planets are in 8th house? Does this cause a threat to the individual’s life/health? Is the whole chart spoiled in this case?

    Thanks

    • VS says:

since it will be a jupiter’s sign, as long as they are not combust the planets will still do good except moon in 8th, especially dark can always cause threat to life in early to mid life

  60. ruchi says:

hello… i would like to know if 11th house has mars and jupiter sitting in pisces and has fifth aspect of rahu and tenth aspect of saturn… will it be considered afflicted?

  61. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
This is re: the placement of the lagna lord in the 8th by a very esteemed astrologer:
” Learned, gambling tendencies, interested in occultism and mean character. If the lord is strong the native takes pride in helping others, has a number of friends, religiously inclined and will have a peaceful and sudden end. ”
Whereas, re: the 8th lord in the 1st, from the same source, it’s all about misery /disease
Can you shed light on why?

    • VS says:

Hi, since it is not my commentary, no way for me to comment. I believe you should try and ask the person who made the comments!

      • Sundar says:

VS, I should have mentioned it is BV Raman.
        Volume one :
“Concerning the first house / Results of Lord of First House Occupying Different Houses” cited with example Chart No. 8.—Born on 12-2-1856 at 12-21 p.m. (L.T.) Lot. 18° 18′ N., Long. 83°58′ E. with Taurus Lagna lord Venus in Saggi.
        And in Volume two:
“Concerning the eighth house / Results of Lord of eighth House Occupying Different Houses”

        Thanks.

        • VS says:

generally speaking connection of the 1st with 8th is less than ideal. however in case the 1st is well disposed and strong and if the involved planets are generally benefic then it can be excellent, example is saggi lagna with jupiter exalted in 8th

on the other hand I think the generic rules have some basic logic but can not in principle be applied to each and every chart verbatim. each chart and combination of planets is different along with dignity of those planets and dasas/ transits operating. so hard to generalize any generic rule

I am new to astrology and the topic of houses is not clear to me. I am really glad to say that your article is very useful to me.

  63. Promila says:

    Hi VS

Which Bhava technique do you recommend based on your experience:
    a) all Bhava of 30 degrees with ascendant degree as Bhava Madhya for all Bhavas?
    b) Sripathi Padhati with Bhavas of different sizes and different Bhava Madhya for each bhava (though bhav Madhya of first bhava is the ascendant degree)
    C) KP cusp chart where the first bhava starts from the ascendant degree (And ascendant degree is not the bhav Madhya)?
    d) any other that you think works better?

    Best Regards

    • VS says:

      (a) is the most pertinent in my experience

I do look at Sripathi system, which is a modification of the placidus house system and it gives good insigths. However bhaav madhya is ALWAYS to be the ascendant degree and the MIDDLE of the house is the strongest and NOT the cusp as taken in placidus, KP and some other systems.

KP system in my opinion is not very accurate at all, but that is just my experience and opinion. I dont start debates/ fights on it

      • Promila says:

In JHora I see that for Sripathi system, first house Bhav madhya is shown as the ascendant degree, but for the rest of them it is not the ascendant degree. So my question is:
        1) do you mean we can use the house beginning and end as shown in Sripathi system of JHora (using the option Porphyry houses (using Sripathi)), however, we we should consider bhav madhya of all houses as the ascendant degree and not the ones shown in JHora?

        Best Regards

        • VS says:

No it does not mean that

These are 2 seperate things. Porphyry systems consider cusp as the strongest part of any bhaav (even with different degrees). Sripathi considers the bhaav madhya as the strongest (as it should be)

As for the different degrees, it is because neither sripathi nor porphyry/ placidus systems have an equal house distribution concept. I advocate equal bhaav where the same degree for each rashi becomes bhaav madhya. however as a 2nd source of reference, you can also see sripathi system

in many a cases you will see that the equal house and sripathi dont show too much divergence, but in some, especially at very high latitudes, they will. the difference is due to the calculation. in equal house, once the lagna degree is found, all the subsequent 12 houses bhaav madhya falls at that degree. In sripathi, lagna degree and 7th will be the same. however the 10th house is considered at the highest point of the sun/ day and is irrelevant of the lagna degree. this MC (medium coeli or midheaven) determines the mid point of 10th bhaav, the same opposite point is for 4th and in between 1st to 4th the bhaavs are distributed unevenly. You can search for its calculation on google, will find many good technical articles that I dont need to reproduce here

bottomline is that equal house and which is most effective point are 2 different things

  64. Prahlad Prabhudatta says:

For virgo ascendent if there is a Sun, Mercury, Rahu & Saturn conjunction in Capricorn (5th house) and Retrograde Jupiter and Ketu conjunction in Cancer (11th house)

Venus in 6th house, what would the career be for this? Mars in 9th house of luck

As we have so much of energy focused here between 2 houses, which career will the native end up doing?

    • VS says:

  65. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For Vrishik lagna, saturn Uch in the 12th, Venus in good shape. My analysis is:
Being the lord of a the 4th and Saturn being happy, he will not give ill effects to the 4th’s significations; example, he may give a property in a distant/lonely place but will cause issues with it, no ill health to mother.
As 3rd lord, he will not reduce efforts, enthusiasm. But as a lord of a kaama trikona, he may give extra marital affairs since the resources of hidden things, secrets and bed pleasures are available in the 12th. Assume that the 12th has no good or bad aspects.
    What do you think?

  66. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
For Taurus lagna, happiness from children is not indicated as per many esteemed astrologers including BVR. Is this generalization due to karaka Guru being a highly FM? Or is there any other reason?

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

as you mentioned yourself, it is a generalization. mercury rules 2nd and 5th so family and children. So unless mercury is deeply afflicted in the chart, by itself there is no problem indicated
mercury is fickle as a planet and can at times give fluctuations in the phalit results. but beyond that, there is no merit to this generalization in my humble opinion

  67. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
BVR on the 4th lord in the 1st house in general: The person becomes highly learned, but
will be afraid to speak in public assemblies. He is likely to lose inherited wealth.
I have heard you state it’s better if the rasi lords move forwards than backwards and thought you should know why BVR mentions the 2 negatives of this positioning.

Please shed some light on this generality.

  68. basant kumar gairola says:

dear sir, For Leo ascendant Venus with high shadbala in 7th house( functional malefic) during MD of Venus, in very generic terms, would the effects of Venus be not beneficial ?
As i have already understood from many of your reply that one planet can not tell the picture, i just want to know the role of Venus in the present case.

    • VS says:

venus is a generically mild and benefic planet and in this case in a friendly sign, moving towards it exaltation. In general by itself this can not cause many issues, except marital issues due to multiple affairs etc.

  69. Aparna says:

Sir can u pl share ur mail id

  70. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
In BVR’s Judging a horoscope, he says things that are very nuanced. For example, he says about 12th lord in the 6th:
“The native will be happy and prosperous, live long, enjoy many comforts, ……….. But if malefics afflict the 12th lord, the person will be unscrupulous, sinful and ill-tempered, hating his mother suffering from unhappiness on account of his own children”
My question then was: How is mother and children connected to the 12th house and how is their happiness connected to it?
I think I have the answer and thought I can share it with you:

In my chart, 12th which is 9th from 4th will show my mother’s blessings through me (kind words, treating her with respect, like a Guru). In my brother’s chart, it will show how he treats her. So, if my 12th is afflicted, she will not see that blessing and if it also also sits in the 6th she will become like my enemy.

About children: 12th is 8th from 5th. In my chart it shows anxiety/bad emotions my children may experience through me. If afflicted, I may me cruel to my children. If it also sits in the sixth it gets worse.

As to why I may SPEAK to my mom and children harshly is because 3rd (speech) is 10th (karma sthaan) from 6th. Sixth house does its karma through the 10th (speaking against enemies, being brave against enemies..)

    Thanks.

    • VS says:

yes sure, one common theme in many classics is that they utilize the chart from different focal points like 4th for mother, 3rd for younger brothers etc. thus a lot of generic rules you will find have such details as the analysis wasnt just native centric

    • VS says:

thanks for reaching out. It is true that I do not provide personal readings. However, I would also like to caution against trusting any astrologer, vedic or otherwise, without a proven track record, especially where the incentive appears to be monetary right off the bat. a lot of ‘astrologers’ are unfortunately selling hope and feeding of fears in people. Goodluck in your learning journey, feel free to ask generic questions in the Q&A as you learn along

    • Abhishek Pande says:

Leticia, apologies if this sounds unsolicited but I would like to really caution against meeting people who claim to be astrologers and give such type of readings as ‘serious events by 2029′ etc. Making predictions in the name of astrology has been so abused in recent times and has brought a lot of disrepute to this art & science (Jyotish is meant to be a guiding light and helps in making the right choices if deciphered correctly), and VS’ spot on when he says most of these will appear to be monetary right off the bat – so its quite absurd that someone’s making a big negative prediction about you without providing much needed color or context.

The problem is also that popularity and authenticity are two completely different things – you’ll come across some youtubers who have huge followers and cater to huge masses – but when you go deep into analyzing their content, they appear so shallow; on the flip side, there are also folks who may be so authentic jyotishis possibly in the remotest of corners that we may or may not hear about them (and yet they exist!)

There is a third flavor to this too – interestingly, you’ll also see folks who have opened big learning academies, and while I respect both of them for their contribution to jyotish and spreading awareness about it, they were very recently found fighting in social media trying to prove their content’s originality over the other – LOL

Good luck with your learning and quest!

      Regards,
      Abhishek

    • Sumit Roy says:

Leticia, what are your birth details – place, and date/time of birth? You may post them here. If the publisher allows it, someone may offer a reading that you could use as a starting point. Agree with the prior posters. There’s a VAST amount of difference between “calculated” i.e. mathematical Jyotish (referred to in India as Ganit Jyotish, ganit = math) and “fruitful” i.e. predictive Jyotish (referred to as Phalit Jyotish, phal = fruit) that could actually be of any benefit to the person. Lastly, know that 99% of predictions made by astrologers never come true simply due to the enormous number of variables (data) that must be analyzed for even an individual reading, never mind millions of mundane interactions a person has with everything around them. If meteorology with all its advanced techniques, brilliant weather scientists and super-computers is barely accurate, can you imagine how inaccurate astrology is?

    Hi VS,
Do cancellation of debilitation rules apply to Rahu and Ketu ? Is so, do we alter the analysis of their mutual aspect to reflect improved dignity ?

    Thank you.

    • VS says:

yes they apply to all 9 planets in jyotish and rahu ketu get the status of planets as well. the debilitation sign of the nodes might be disputed though, unlike all the other 7 planets where the sign as well as exact degree of debilitation is very well defined

  73. narayan says:

    Dear VS,
Few doubts, can you please share your insights:

    1. What do you interpret, if house no. 6 – 8 – 12 are empty but the lord is either combust or retrograde.
    2. What happens in cases where Mercury is ahead of Sun and not combust.
    3. If rahu is in swati – ketu in Ashwini and mars in vishaka, is it right to say that Mars is outside the 1-7 axis.
Can you please revert on these. Regards, Narayan

    • VS says:

having less number of planets deposited in 6-8-12 is always desirable. its lords if weak is generally good as they are unable to carry forward the negative agenda too much
as for the rest, the questions are either incorrect or too diffuse for me to answer meaningfully in a generic fashion

  74. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:

    Dear VS,
Nice to visit your website and really appreciate your explanation and fundamental approach towards astrology. Pls help me to decode the impact and effects of the planets which are having multiple effects on each other. For Gemini ascendent and Sagittarius moon these are the planets
Sun at 0 deg 45′ in Libra in 5th house. Sun is Debilitated and aspected by Saturn with 12 deg 56′ and is Retro in Aries in 11th house hence saturn is also debilitated. Also sign lord of 5th house Venus is debilitated in 4th House with 6 deg 45′. In 4th house Venus is conjunct with Exalted Asc Lord Mercury with 13 deg 09′ and Jupiter which is combust with 24 deg 41′. Pls clarify
    i) Will there be neech bhang for Sun which is at 0 deg 45′ as aspected by debilitated Saturn. What difference the retro status of saturn will make. Will Sun also get neech bhang by Venus. What will be the resultant impact of on all this on Sun which is 0 deg 41′?
ii) What will be the impact on and of combust Jupiter which is with exalted mercury and debilitated Venus in 4th house. Uranus is also in 4th house. Will the effects of combust get mitigated ?
iii) What will be the impact on and of Saturn which is debilitated and retro. Will it observe Neech Bhang
iv) What will be the impact on and of Venus, will it observe Neech Bhang.
v)What will be the impact on and of Exalted Mercury which is Asc Lord and is conjunct with combust jupiter uranus and debilitated venus.
vi) What will be the overall impact of 4th house having conjunction of exalted asc lord mercury, combust jupiter, debilitated venus and uranus.
vii) Will there be kendra adhipati dosha
viii) What will be the impact of and on 7th house which is having conjunction of Mars 23 deg 53′ and moon 22 deg 29′.
Rahu Ketu are at 9 and 3 axis with 25 deg 51′

Request you to kindly guide to understand the resultant of multiple conditions.

    Kind Regards // Atul

    • VS says:

hello, sorry but this is a personal chart reading in depth that you are really asking for. I do not provide such services. I will post this in case anyone else here wishes to respond to your detailed queries. thanks

  78. KRS says:

    Dear VS
I have a rather basic question re rashi vs bhav placement. I understand the placement of bhav based on ascendant degrees. However, I have seen that planets appear to give results of rashis rather than bhavs in many cases. For example, my son has Mercury in 6th rashi but 5th bhav (in good dignity), but Mercury has always given him difficulties and constraints in education during its bhuktis/pratyantara dashas. In other cases the bhav appears to better explain the effects of a planet.
    (1) Are there any rules for deciding when the rashi or bhav should be considered as the correct house placement of the planet? Do both matter?
    (2) How does one use rashi vs bhav for deciding yogas based on house placement? For example, the 9th and 10th lord may be together in rashi but not bhav. (I understand that conjunction depend on degree of proximity, but then decision rules are often dichotomous, like what constitutes a raja yoga).
    (3) I have read that rashi placement is what one starts with but eventually the planet gives effects of its bhav placement (somewhat like a navamsa placement effect). Is that true?
Any advice on this important but confusing topic will be much appreciated.
As always, many thanks for your patience in dealing with doubts of novices like me.

    • VS says:

the answer to all is that there is an overlap of results. A planet sitting in the 9th rashi but 8th bhaav will give mixed results of both in its dasa and sort of mingle the effects of the 8th with 9th which might mean a bad period for general fortune and for father and father’s health etc. there is no black and white rule as good and bad can coexist as well as mingling of functionally good and bad results. how much of good vs. bad comes from experience of looking at more and more charts. one can not learn from a handful of charts only. the more you study them, the more you will answer your own questions. thanks

    Hello VS:
I have a basic question about 6th lord in 6th: Sixth lord guards the significations well. It gives the person good immunity and recovery from acute diseases. I understand why the 7th’s association with the sixth is not good cos 6th is a loss to the seventh. However, when the 9th lord, for example, gets associated with the 6th either by aspect or conjunction with the 6th, disease is indicated for the father. What is the logic behind protecting the me from acute diseases but making my father sick?

any planet carries the agenda of its rulership to the place it sits in the chart. so 6th say sitting in 9th will carry the agenda of sickness into 9th of father. 6th sitting in 6th is just solidifying its own agenda – any strong planet protects the things it rules even if it is 6th or 8th etc. if a person has their lagna lord afflicted in the 6th with the 6th lord, then they are likely to have frequent 6th house related issues including health issues

    Hi VS

In the few charts I have seen, I many times see that Shadbala for a Bhav is lowest (JHora) and the Sarv Ashtakvarga (SAV) of the same house is the highest, sometimes even > 40 … so how do we interpret whether these houses are good/bad, strong/weak for the native?

    Best Regards
    Amit

    • VS says:

SAV and BAV is a concept that is to be utilized only for transits and not basic chart analysis. like anything else in jyotish, when weak and positive exist in a planet/ yoga/ bhaav, then effects will be mixed too

Pranaam guruji. I want to know maximum significations of each house and sign and and nakshatra and planet… means i want to even know which house/planet/sign/nakshatra represents wristwatch or football or bike or cup or pen or red colour or wet things or dry things or paper or exam or beard or fingernails or grass etc etc small small things also. Can you please suggest some books or resources which contain maximum number of significations or even teaches us logic to find it out ourselves… Thank you for giving your knowledge and effort for free. Regards

    • VS says:

there are many treastises that deal with this topic. I would recommend you to start with Phaladeepika as it has a comprehensive list of planet karakatvas. Keep in mind that no one list or source is comprehensive

The more literature you read, keep compiling your own list from all the sources and that will be the most comprehensive way to learn

    Hi Sir,
Plz help me understand that if 4 planets (2 benefic & 2 malefic) aspect the 8th house (from different houses), does that increase the potency of the 8th house to give bad results ?
Ex – Virgo lagna, 8th house being aspected by Saturn, Moon, Mars & Jupiter.

    Thanks,
    Tanisha

    • VS says:

it depends on the lord of 8th, its dignity and strength as well as whether the planets aspecting the house are its friends, neutral or enemies

This is a very informative and a well written article. However am wondering, when there are good yoga’s in my chart according to astrology, when will they take affect?

  87. Rao Durvasula says:

    Namaste,
Thank you very much. I read this article and was able to understand very easily. My question can you please share a similar write up on how planet transitions occur and how each planet transition has sub phases ? Sorry if I am using the wrong terms.
    Respectfully
    Rao

Hello I am not sure what you are asking. My advise is that if you are new to Jyotish, just read with a little more patience, as it is a very complex field, and soon you will find things making more and more sense automatically 🙂

  88. Karthik says:

    Hello VS,

Having the 6th or 8th lord 6/8 houses away from its own dusthana house is good as it obstructs the planet to carry out the agenda of dusthana houses. Is this statement logical?

    • VS says:

yes it is. infact some astrology sources attribute this as the reason why saturn in virgo lagna or jupiter in cancer lagna can cause strong raj yogas if other conditions permit as well including a strong lagna lord

  89. Sundar says:

    Dear VS:
Hope you are doing well, it’s been long.
Quick question: When 12th lord is in 12th it is a yoga that confers balance and truthfulness. I believe that it also offers protection against secret diseases and enemies. The above is true especially if the planet is a FB like unafflicted Budha for Tula lagna.
Question: What happens when the lagna lord is conjunct Budha. It gets neecha bhanga RY. Just discounting the neecha state, how will the lagna lord perform since it is in the Viraya sthaana which is different from Venus joining the 12th lord in Pisces where Venus becomes Uch with Budha getting NBRY and VPRY.

    Thanks as always.

    • VS says:

when lagna is libra and venus joins mercury in the 12th, as long as both are not combust (within 10 to 12 degrees of sun) then overall it is still good as both are FB and GB
health remains a bit febrile but longevity remains long as venus as 8th prospers more than venus as 1st lord

also when a planet is getting NB in a non kendra sthana like 12th, it will be considered only NB and not NBRY in general

    Hello VS
I was reading your answer related the question posted by Sunder on 23 sep 2017 ,in which you said VRY give comforts. I have one doubt ,I will be great full if you could spare some time to clear my doubt. For cancer ascendant if Saturn and Venus are conjoined in 12th house then it’s a VRY as 8th lord is in 12th house . Will it give wealth or reduce longevity specially if lagnesh Moon and yogkarka Mars both are conjoined in 8th house will represent death or death like situation . And being a 7th lord also and karka of marriage , both are in 12th will give negative effect to married life .
Thanks for encouraging lot of people like me to go further in astrology

    • VS says:

Hello, you can not just take one or 2 planets to make an overall judgement on a chart or its aspects. Also keep in mind that any given yoga, even if good, can be bad for other aspects of life. a weak 6th or 8th lord can actually give higher rise in profession and finances meanwhile reducing health quality and/ or longevity. Good and bad coexist in astrology like in real life

  91. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
    Hope all’s well with you.
Qstn: For Cancer Lagna Mars/Guru/Moon in Cancer but affecting the second bhaav. During the Sun dasa, even if Sun is not depositing the above three, will their effects affect how Sun does where he is placed?

    Thanks.

  92. Hemlata says:

    Dear Sir

How would be your view on Venus in 1st house for Sagittarius ascendant, especially if close to ascendant degree? It being 6th lord, been 8th place from it’s dusthana lordship. It’s MK is 11th house. Would it carry more agenda of 6th or 11th? Being 8 places away from 6, would it prevent diseases/debts or cause more of it?

    Thank you 🙏
