12 Signs & their Significations (Part I)

After houses and planets, how about the signs?

Firstly a few things to note about signs.

(I) There are 3 types of signs by Flexibility- Movable, Fixed & Dual.

Movable signs – Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn { these represent Activity, Movement, Adaptibility, Change, Quickness, Reform, Independence, Moving on, Flexibility, Dissatisfaction (leading to rapid change0}

Fixed signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio & Aquarius { these represent Steadiness, Rigidity, Headstrong nature, Fixed, Slow but steady, Accumulation, Steady/ Calm, Resolute, Determined, My way or highway sort of nature, Loving to remain in one place/ job for a long time, Fixed opinions on spirituality/ religion, Persistent)

Dual signs – Gemini, Virgo, Saggitarius, Pisces [ these represent a mix of both the above and hence their ‘dual’ nature, Learning oriented, Pedantic, Philosophical, Inclined to reading/ writing, Inclined to communicate/ preach/ teach, Open to ideas/ learning, Multitasking, Exploring different options all the time}

(II) There are 4 types of signs by element – Fire, Earth, Wind, Water

Fire signs – Aries, Leo, Saggitarius { Energy, Passion, Aggression, Decisiveness, Leadership, Dominance, Frank, Outspoken, Extrovertness, Brilliance, Anger, Hot temprament, Fast Metabloic rate, Active, Pioneering, Separating, Spontaneous, Inspiring, Self centered, Motivated, Visionary, Enthusiastic, Lovers of activity and movement/ exploration, My way or highway traits, Impatient, Impulsive}

Earth signs – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn { Practical, Methodical, Analytical, Slow and steady, Perservering, Rising to top slowly but surely, Patient, Building/ Accumulating, Practical, Realistic, Down to earth nature, Lover of reality as opposed to fiction/ imagination, Fact oriented, Sluggish, Resilient, Keen business skills, Knows real materialistic value of things, Good in details, Good Planners, Good Managers/ CEOs/ Directors, Dependable/ trustworthy}

Air signs – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius { Quick thinking, Intellectual, Abstract thought, Communicative, Eager to learn, Good writers/ orators/ spokesmen, Quick in physical movement, Love Travel & exploration, Journey more important than destination nature, Great social skills, Great friends, Pleasant, Philosophical attitude, Sponge like nature for knowledge, Flexible nature, Harmony loving, Beauty loving}

Water signs – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces { Emotional, Intuitive, Sensitive, Learning, Passionate, Collectors/ hoarders – collect memories/ articles, Hard to detach, Nurturing/ caring, Motherly attitude, Forgiving, Imaginative, Introvert nature, Secretive, Psychic, Dreamy, Lesser physical energy, Detached from practical facts- go on intuition as opposed to facts, Natural meditation skills if developed, Tendency to gain weight}

Now there are multiple other ways to categorize signs. But pause here a bit. Now I am going to post the list of sign rulership by planets, which I posted earlier too. Here is a good exercise to start making these things intuitive. You know the planet significations, you know the sign characteristics. BLEND them in your mind. Thats what each rashi signifies. A good exercise to do.

here is an example – Mars rules Aries and Scorpio (but from above you know Aries is a Fire sign and movable whereas Scorpio is Water & Fixed). So what is Mars?

You know that too from the planet significations. It is Energy, aggression, passion, competitive nature, ambition, acitivty etc. So in Aries it will manifest as Quick thinking, Brilliant, pioneering, extrovert, outwardly aggresive, frank, outspoken, quick moving and thinking etc. But Scorpio is a watery sign which is introvert and emotional. So here the aggressive energy of Mars will take the form of passive aggresive! They will have all that energy Internalized to give them strong determination, unyielding and very passionate with strong likes/ dislikes. Unlike Aries, they are not outwardly aggresive, but will not forget and forgive easily and keep grudges/ jealousies easily. If they learn to control their internal energy, can be constructive and pentrating like no other giving them deep charisma and control of their senses)

So here goes the list again for rulership of signs. Have at it. Go ahead and try thinking about signs from planets and sign nature from what you know by now. After some time in part II, I will post the significations of the signs. But it should now start to be logical and intuitive both, not just cramming up rules.

    Elaborate and completely penetrating insight . Thanks.

  2. Baskar says:

    Dear VS ji,

    Is it true that any planet sitting in Virgo sign does not give bad results?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks much againfor teaching me.

    • VS says:

      Not true. where did you get such a generic rule from?

      sun treats as neutral sign but neecha abhilashi
      moon treats as friendly sign but mercury treats as enemy
      mercury itself is exalted
      mars here will give bad results due to being placed in an enemnys sign

      saturn, rahu and mercury are all well placed in this sign. ketu isnt placed well. jupiter might give mixed results due to enmity with mercury

      • BR says:

        Hi VS,

        What does “neecha abhilashi” mean? I’ve seen you use this term several times.

        Also, how about sun/mercury conjunction in Virgo. Is it good if Mercury is not combust?

        • VS says:

          a planet one sign before its debilitation sign and moving towards its debilitation is neecha abhilashi and one sign before exaltation sign is uccha abhilashi

          • BR says:

            Thanks! That makes sense. But, does being neecha abhilashi weaken the sun (or any other planet)?

            Also, is there an equivalent concept for planets one house after their exaltation or debiliation? One should expect that one house after their exaltation they still carry some good qualities.

          • VS says:

            mathematically, the istha phal, remains high it linearly goes from 0 at point of debilitation to 60 at point of exaltation. hence one house before of after it remains high (this does not incorporate the closeness to sun factor)
            all planets, except Jupiter, are in a friendly sign when one sign before their exaltation.

          • akash says:

            as per your rule, moon will be neech abhilashi in libra. as scorpio its debilliation sign

      • Baskar says:

        Excellent reply VS ji.

        Thank you for correcting me.

        “Google acharya” is not right always 🙂

  3. Ashish Kumar says:

    Very good article.Some people say that Scorpio lagna is inauspicious. When you say fixed signs,is it advisable to use a fixed Lagna such as Scorpio with Jupiter in it for marriage?

    • VS says:

      being the generic 8th sign, there is some stigma attached to scorpio. however any generalization is usually incorrect. any lagna can work as long as the lagna lord is strong and well placed and good yogas form in the chart

  4. Rahul says:

    Vivek sir
    Planets sitting in dual signs support each other according to jaimini

    • VS says:

      they affect each other strongly as in Jamini any planet sitting in a dual sign has a full aspect on the other dual signs…(rashi aspects)

  5. Taz says:

    Please explain how to determine pada kish (obstacle) planet and which house will be effected. Thank you.

    • VS says:

      Not aware of that definition. Technicall badhakesh is more appropriate in context of some astrological scriptures. It involves the lord of 11th for movable signs, lord of 9th for fixed signs and lord of 7th for dual signs

  6. BNP says:

    VS, in above example of your article (Mars in Aries & Scorpio), how to add house factor in it? Let’s say Mars in 1st house and in aries vs Mars in 4th house in aries?

    • VS says:

      functional nature comes into play in what you are asking. mars in 4th implies capricorn ascendant and hence mars is not a functional benefic. Albeit not a negative planet but it can be dicey and a badhak. on the other hand for aries it becomes a functional benefic as MK sign is lagna and the other sign is 8th and hence even though it will become a strong karaka for injury and surgery, Mars will remain a benefic for Aries

  7. basant kumar gairola says:

    dear Vivek, During sadesatti of Capricorn and Aquarius planets, would the Saturn being the lord of these Rashis show its benevolence on them in generic terms, though as you keep educating all of us that there are always number of factors responsible.
    thanks

    • VS says:

      generally sadhe satti implies an enhanced impact of saturn on the individual via transit.
      ofcourse if saturn is a functional benefic for the chart and placed well, the impact of sadhe satti is not averse

  8. Sundar says:

    Hello VS:
    What is your opinion on Dagdha rasis as a factor in chart analysis?
    Thanks.

    • VS says:

      Dagdha or the burnt rasi concept is a derivative analysis from tithis and even though I have not researched much into it, I would encourage more individuals to research into it. I have insufficient knowledge to give a confident answer on this question
